    I *love* that the actress actually made it look like she was going to continue saying "Maker of Death" and stopped herself when Mapes wailed, that's such fantastic detail from the books, that Jessica actually gets through this by mistake.

    • @argophontes
      @argophontes 2 года назад +634

      @JJ Email Jessica was going to say "Maker of Death", which was part of the myth that the Missionairia Protectiva left behind, but Mapes's reaction made her stop at "Maker".
      "“Eighe-e-e-e-e-e!” Mapes wailed. It was a sound of both grief and elation. She trembled so hard the knife blade sent glittering shards of reflection shooting around the room.
      Jessica waited, poised. She had intended to say the knife was a maker of death and then add the ancient word, but every sense warned her now, all the deep training of alertness that exposed meaning in the most casual muscle twitch.
      The key word was... maker.
      Maker? Maker.
      Still, Mapes held the knife as though ready to use it.
      Jessica said: “Did you think that I, knowing the mysteries of the Great Mother, would not know the Maker?”

      This scene was filmed in the 1984 David Lynch version as well but cut from the theatrical release. In that version Lady Jessica tells Shadout Mapes (Linda Hunt) that she has "...sheathed the blade unbloodied." So, Shadout pulls Jessica's hand and lets the blade cut her chest. It's kind of erotic.

    01:03 The reason why Lady Jessica went from composed to worried in just seconds is because of the crysknife. She was not expecting THAT weapon:
    - It proves that Shadout Mapes is really a fremen, so it means she could be a formidable warrior.
    - A crysknife was not allowed to be seen by those considered to be outsiders by the tribe. It's literally a dead sentence.
    - If it was drawn, it could not be resheathed until it had drawn blood.
    This is why Jessica alerted the guard. She was not sure about the outcome of this situation.

      Yup, great points. Only thing which might not apply here is the last: I think it's no longer film canon that the Fremen believe that "once drawn, a crys-knife may not be sheathed until it has tasted blood" (or thereabouts, paraphrasing from the books); there were numerous times where people draw it and then sheathe it without blooding it in the film.

      All excellent observations, but there was another battle that was going on here which is more evident in the books, but really hard to convey on film. The Shadout Mapes was there not just to test Jessica for her part in the prophecy but kill her if she failed (the Fremen don't do things in half-measures). Jessica knew that if she got any part of the expected prophecy that Mapes understood wrong, there would be violence.

    The fact that, as others have said, Jessica is essentially improvising, is made all the more incredible because of an omitted (or at least subtextual) fact from the books: the weapon is meant to kill her if she is not the One. The thing about the Crysknife, it's relationship with the Fremen and Arrakis, the source of the spice, is very interesting. In the real world, the Kris is a dagger which is the traditional preferred weapon of the Malays (and Malay-associated peoples), who inhabit Nusantara (Maritime Southeast Asia). Among the things which this area is famous for is spice. Spice was one of the reasons Europeans (English , Dutch, Portuguese) came to this area and colonized it.

      Yes. I feel like realism is neglected far too much in writing movies nowadays. They dont stop and think, how would this play out in the real world? Dune isnt nearly as bad as other movies though. I cringe at how they portray the police in the new batman movie for example. Even I could anker the writing more in reality.
