I've been to all these places that are no more. My heart is broken. Thanks for spreading awareness.
Edit - my friend and her husband had to sneak back up to their ruins to try to find their dog that ran off. They dressed in hazmat suits and said they were volunteers. Still haven't found Jupiter. It's so sad.

Hey guys, I found you because of your Morissette reactions. I live in L.A. In fact the "Hollywood Fire" was roughly six streets away from me. Thankfully that night the winds were light and the helicopters were able to drop water and contain it quickly. L.A. had record rains for 2 years followed by massive brush growth and then category 2 hurricane winds. There are many theories and as usual conspiracies about what happened and the result. There are people pointing fingers and the lawyers have come out from the woodwork like termites....but there has also been a massive outpouring of love and assistance. It will take at least 10 years before these neighborhoods are restored. There are many hurdles. We move on....like every community around the world that suffers a catastrophe. Thanks for taking the time to think about us. Looking forward to more music....especially Morissette! lol

My prayers of course to everyone living and employed in the area.
Also to my brethren and all first responders who are trying to save lives and property.
Wildland firefighting is a whole different beast.
Fire breaks are one of the tools that they use to extinguish these fires so yes, having permanent ones set up in different areas would be a smart idea.
Homeowners are told if possible to make sure there are no brush or trees within a certain distance from buildings.
Unfortunately, some of the massive devastation is due in part to local and state governments not following environmental experts' advice to take measures to lessen the threat and not coming up with plans to have more water resources available in a crisis like this.
One of the reasons some houses were spared is because of the construction of the building.
CBS or concrete block and stucco materials are fire retardant compared to wood-framed buildings. Also, use metal roofs instead of shingle roofing materials.
Insurance companies are disgusting. As you said these people have paid premiums for decades for this coverage then they decide especially to take the money and run.
They are just as bad with flood insurance trying to find ways to not pay out.

The insurance companies stopped giving coverage weeks before the fire. They could not afford a disaster level fire season. It would have bankrupted them, and the insurers of the of the insurance companies. They wanted to stay, and they requested that the governor let them raise rates, so they could afford to cover a disaster. They also requested that he clear the forest floor of debris of dead trees and brush. The forest floor had not been cleared for thirty years. He did not agree to their requests, so they canceled policies. The largest reservoir, that can hold thirty times the amount as the four working reservoirs, was closed for a repair since February of last year. The repair takes a month, and is supposed to start this month and be done by next month. I don’t know if that will be possible right now. They were too casual about the repairs considering the known dangers.

My sister owns a home in the foothills a little south of the Palisades fire and it is such a beautiful place to own a home. Pretty much every evening at sunset and the air begins to cool they get a predictable breeze that sweep up the hillsides and bathes the area with warm ocean air that is just mesmerizes you if you are outside. You really have to experience it to believe it. It is a sweet spot due to the orientation of the mountains, canyons and ocean that create an amazingly comfortable place, and I can see why celebrities and the wealthy flocked there over the decades. But it is so fire prone and I am only surprised at why this doesn't happen on a more regular basis. Perhaps climate change have worsened the conditions here. I grew up in the area and it has always been like this. I'll bet you that everyone that can, rebuilds and stays. 😊 Good luck people.....

I live in Chicago but used to be out in LA (Pasadena) a lot for work and I remember sitting in my office looking up a the mountains looking at fires burning up above where the Eaton fire burned. The winds were favorable and no one in the office paid any notice. I was shocked. Much like we are in the Midwest with tornados, it happens and we sort of ignore it.
One of my friends lost her house in the Pallisades. They were far enough from the steep bits that she never thought it would happen. And it was gone withing ten hours of any hint of danger. 20 years of memories gone in ten hours.
What does my friend need? Certainly not money. I just told here 'I am here". Call me to complain or cry or anything. She hasn't called yet which is no surprise, as she is a very strong woman, but I am here when that call comes.

Hey guys, yes, it's horrific and nothing is even close to being contained let alone put out! Interesting note, the first planes used for fire fighting actually happened in my hometown here in northern California in the '50's. They were small cropdusters but now you see these huge planes dumping retardant. It's amazing to see the scooper planes flying low scooping water out of the ocean and reservoirs. Hats off to the pilots, brave people!

I live on the westside of L.A., south of the fires near LAX. Such a terrible ordeal of those who have been directly impacted. Every year, we have Santa Ana winds, from the east, warm and dry. Our weather forecasters give us warnings days out, because of the dangers of throwing a cigarette out of a driving car, no campfires, BBQ's, fireworks, etc... Because our landscapes are so overgrown and dry and the strong winds. Many of our larger fires are in the forest areas where houses are scattered about. Many acres are burnt because the vast wilderness or lack of roads and terrain to get to them. Most are caused by lightning strikes or electrical wires/boxes has a spark. Malibu has their fires (less than a month before the fires, south of Malibu had a fire by the university) and floods since the areas has a lot of landscaped/brush and trees. The shrubbery provides beauty, but people like it for giving privacy since in Malibu are home to a lot of celebrities and those in businesses and well paid. Also, the of access to the homes in a mountainous area. After fires, the next disaster are the floods from rainstorms that will wash the dirt on whatever is below them, maybe a house not affected by the fire.
The Pacific Palisades fires has taken more homes. This is a residential neighborhood where a house is by the next house, filled by street after street. The winds made this so disastrous. The Palisades is mostly flat, but is higher due to the hill tops they are on that is empty landscaped shrubs, trees and brush, which threatens the homes and business in the foothills (Santa Monica, Brentwood) I am pleased many people took the evacuation notice seriously, but unfortunately these people who lost everything, and those home that were fortunate the fires missed them, now have to worry about those who start looting them for valuables. Some homes survive because of luck, wind direction or the materials they made the house of and keeping their landscape trimmed, watered and away from their houses. Some risk their lives and hold on by protecting their home by using a water hose if any embers fly to their property. Unfortunately, sometimes it gets too late to exit the area to save their lives. I saw in the news, some homeowners are rejecting the evacuation orders, since their home survived the fires, but they are protecting the home from looters. The have signs that they are armed.
I hope will get to the bottom of why so many homes burned down. Yes, we have the winds, but I heard something about the water supply. I realize some homes will be turned to ash, and some will be sacrificed, to save many other homes and businesses. If you cannot control the fires, get to the perimeter of the fire and start controlling it from there. In the wilderness, they go away from the fire and start tearing up the ground to make a fire break to stop the spread of the fire. Maybe if the fires were less, we would be able to get the helicopters drop water on what is burning because there will be less smoke in the air.
Also, I want to know, our City and State is high taxed, and with the fire department and budget cuts, where did those funds go to. City funds need to be used for the safety and protection of their residents first. The rest can go to their pet projects or whatever diversity cause they are for. It is not going to the public schools since kids are graduating not able to read and if they knew our American and World history, they would vote a different way in CA (mostly the larger coastal towns). Our State is run by one party and most of the time a majority of one party. I thought the last election would be different. I thought, we finally hit rock bottom with our domestic problems, but no, I guess CA has more to go to reach bottom to try a different way to run our State. We do have fantastic weather with the occasional earthquakes.

Please everyone stop with the blaming. Politicians did not cause this. Yes, i know about the lack of water pressure in the Palisades. It never would have mattered. High winds blew embers and the scope of these fires would never have been manageable. This was a force of nature and could not be stopped. Your negativity will help nothing, nor change anything. Help if you can. Donate to organizations that are completely drowning in the sheer number of people and ANIMALS that need help.

Such a horrible tragedy and I pray all affected by the fire find some relief. We have family out there, but they were not directly affected. It has been reported that the severity of the fire was due largely to inadequate fire prevention methods and lack of adequate firefighting resources. Apparently, the L.A. Mayor cut the annual fire department budget by more than $17 million. I watched the statement of one official who said the fire department staffing level is the same as it was in 2010. I saw interviews where firefighters were telling residents to leave because they ran out of water. Apparently the state has been diverting substantial amounts of runoff from rain water into the ocean to benefit the smelt (fish) population instead of bulking up reserve water storage for firefighting purposes.. While this year's fire devastation is horrendous, they are nothing new. They have been happening for many years. They know they are coming, so there is no excuse for not being better prepared. I can understand the distain for insurance companies dropping coverage. But they are businesses, not charities. And if they dish out ever increasing payouts annually while the state does little or nothing to prevent massive loss, they would be smart to either increase premiums by 1,000% or drop coverage. BTW, I did see one family who used a generator to pump water out of their pool to hose down their house and their neighbors houses. And apparently those houses were the only ones in that area not burned up by the fire.

Wildfires happen there since recorded memory, its actually meant to. It's not going to stop until fure runs out of fuel. It literally depended on which way the wind blew that day.

There is a certain misunderstanding about insurance being canceled in California. The insurance companies asked for a rate increase due to the increase in number and scope of the fires but was REFUSED by the California legislator. And that was because of mismanagement of fire prevention by the Governor and Legislators over the last 6 years in power (more like corruption but that is just my opinion). As insurance companies are private companies and MUST make a profit to stay in business theY LEFT THE STATE.

  • @msmuse7483
    @msmuse7483 18 дней назад +4

Unfortunately, your idea of fire breaks, although well intentioned - simply cannot work under these conditions (burning embers traveling 2 or 3 miles in such fierce wind conditions). You can't place wide enough barriers around any community. There simply isn't the available land. And, that does not even take into account the fires that get started by fireworks or other man created causes within communities. That is what makes this such a problem for more and more homes - particularly in the So. Ca area, but also true for other areas as well. The sad truth is that the environment itself is increasingly unwelcome to our current society. Whether fire, flood, hurricane, or typhoon, massive risks are growing. None of us are prepared and none of us want to pay for the increasing costs to face the challenges ahead. That is why the insurers are raising rates everywhere and cancelling policies. Their underwriting models increasingly reflect known challenges while they are only beginning to factor in future potential risks. As the weather gets increasingly unpredictable and destructive as the globe continues to heat up, solutions will become increasingly hard to find and expensive. We all need to realize that none of us will be unscathed by the challenges ahead. We can feel horrified and saddened by what LA faces, but let's be clear that globally, none of us will be spared.

I agree about the fire breaks, but that would be difficult for many reasons. The land here is so expensive, and the population so dense, the land is all owned. Imagine having thousand of acres of a major city in England burning. Afterwards, how do you take acres of former houses and yards and turn them into fire breaks? Buy people out? I have no idea how this could be accomplished, but I hope they do something if they can't rebuild due to insurance issues.
