  • In this week's class, we looked at the concept of glazing in painting. Glazing used different materials, such as semi-precious stones, minerals, rocks, and even dirt, are ground into particles of various sizes, which are then mixed with a clear glaze consisting of a combination of garlic and sand oil.
The size of the particles affects the opacity or transparency of the glaze, resulting in different visual effects and I'll take you through that in a more scientific way. Or at least as scientific as an artist can be.
Ultimately the larger particles create an opaque color, while smaller particles result in semi-transparent or fully transparent colors. And we'll look at when you apply multiple layers of glaze to achieve desired color effects and how light interacts with these layers.
We'll also touch on the composition of paint, including the proportion of pigment to oil, and how different types of oils and their drying times affect the final outcome.
Careful planning when glazing is important, as the process allows only one chance to get it right but can serve as a powerful technique in your painting.
