Why Are Women Like This?

  • I've recently seen a new phrase around TikTok, "girl dinner". The term 'girl dinner' seems to be first coined by a girl on TikTok who showed her meal which consisted of an assortment of tiny food items left over in her fridge. The trend is pretty funny, but of course, some have taken it and put a completely new meaning behind the term.

I am a 64 year old woman. I grew up eating like this maybe once every couple of months. We called it "cocktail party" dinner. I raised my daughters having cocktail party dinner for a fun occasional treat. They are all in their 30s now and if I invite them over for cocktail party dinner they get giddy. 😂

I was actually talking to my husband about this last night and I mentioned to him, you know if we weren't married I would be eating a pink lady apple and a couple corn chips for dinner every night.
I have struggled with disordered eating/eating disorders since I was about 15 and as I said that to him I realized that being married and making food for us both has helped me recover from that mindset and way of living monumentally.
I still struggle with it sometimes, but now my mindset has shifted and my desire to provide a good meal for him when he comes home after a long day at work far outweighs my desire to just "graze" or even skip dinner with the excuse that I "wasn't hungry", when I really just didn't want to eat because of years of unhealthy thinking and habits about food.
Of course, as part of our marriage, I agreed to make the meals and I want to hold up my end of the deal as a principal on my part, but he is a very understanding guy who will come home from a 10-hour workday and make dinner if I feel sick or overwhelmed, so this is not something I have ever felt forced to do, and because of that, food means something so much more to me now. We share the workload and making meals for him now makes me excited to eat with him, excited to consume good food and try new things. I think that's pretty incredible, and 17-year-old me would have never believed that was possible.

In Slavic countries this is a very common family dinner. Sourdough bread, hard cheese, pickles, then depending on the season fruit (apples, grapes, watermelon...) or in winter maybe some mayo, smoked fish... Around Hungary a very popular choice is a hard sausage. Yesterday and the day before I had Sourdough bread, hard sausage and hard aromatic cheese. My wife and my son had it as well.
The sausages are often home-made from animals raised by the same person who prepared the sausage, in the hills you can get home-made cheese. Fruit from your own trees and bushes, pickles made at home, fish caught by a family member... This is about as "natural" as you can get.

This really confuses me as a Polish person. To me "girl dinner" sounds like a perfectly healthy and reasonable meal (personally, I skip bread/crackers). Because we don't eat a big meal for dinner. We eat our main meal around 3-6 pm, depending on work schedule, and don't break for lunch. Cooked dinner is a fancy, rare occurance

On Sunday night, my husband and I occasionally partake in a "Girl's Dinner," consisting of various favorite cheeses, grapes, figs, cornichons, prosciutto, a baguette, a fine wine or champagne, etc. By no means is it a frugal dinner, actually quite the contrary, nor is is really healthy, although quite high in protein. But the funniest thing about it is that should that be the night we are enjoying this rather extravagant meal, it will also be the night that my mother-in-law phones from the other side of the country and is appalled that her son is having to eat "cheese and crackers" for dinner. No matter how old they get, mothers will never get over taking care of their baby boys. 🥰

Not entirely related to the main topic of this video, but this came to mind when the woman was talking about being a wife.
I absolutely love being a wife. I don’t feel oppressed or used or like I’ve lost who I am when I became a wife. Being able to be a housewife, while my husband goes out into the world to provide for us, makes me feel incredibly honored and privileged. My husband respects and appreciates the work that I do in the home. I love being able to have dinner ready for when he gets home. As the wife and keeper of the home, I get to set the tone for the day/evening. By getting up and preparing breakfast and lunch for my husband, it gives him a boost in the morning and a better start to the work day for him. When he comes home and the house is clean and food is ready, it gives him a relaxing environment to unwind from the day. This is all to my benefit. We get to enjoy quality time in the evening together, and we don’t have to bicker about who’s going to do the dishes or sweep the floor next. I have my role in keeping the household running smoothly, while he is leader and provider of our family. It’s a wonderful harmony. Remember ladies and gentlemen, submission isn’t about value it’s for unity and function in the home.

I don’t see it as work, I see it as caring for my people. I love having people over for dinner, especially if those people are my children. I also wish we’d had a couple of more kids instead of going back to school and then joining the workforce only to care for other’s children.
I also eat cheese, crackers and fruit. Lol it’s not exclusive from each other like that woman on the video said.

I have never eaten just a Charcuterie Board/Cheese & Crackers for dinner! Yes I've done that for a Snack but not a meal.
Also, WHO THE F**K HAS LEFTOVER CHIPOTLE?!
I rarely eat Chipotle but when I do, I never have leftovers. Same for other times I get a Delivery/Restaurant meal. Unless it's a Domino's Pizza deal where you get 2+ Pizzas for affordable price, then it's 1 Pizza for Dinner that night & the other for tomorrow. The only other exception being if I go to White Castle and get a Crave Case then Half is 1 Meal the other Half is another Meal.
Oftentimes I make a big batch of something that lasts 3-4 days and simply reheat/eat a portion of it each day for my meals. Could be a big batch of Chili or Tuna Salad or Chicken Salad or Refried Beans or Corned Beef Potatoes & Cabbage Soup or Onion Soup or Beef Stew or Pasta Salad or some other Pasta dish or something else.

My husband and I have been married for almost 12 years and then together almost 14 years he kind of had an idea about what I used to call compartmentalized dinner like you eat it and pieces and I introduced him to like what everybody’s now calling “girl dinner” after we got married and he loves it. When that’s our dinner. He loves that but it’s usually a night that he hasn’t been working heavily in the sun and we have four kids. I have to take that into consideration, so does he. And it’s actually not that far removed from like history to eat like a heavy meal in the middle of the day and then eat a lighter meal before bed. People are trying too hard to read too much into this sometimes your body just needs a little something not anything heavy

My sister would definitely endorse that meal. It's what she has always preferred to eat. Cheese is mostly fat, and dietary fat - especially animal fat - is frowned upon these days. But that's probably due to an overdose of fake science. Animal fat is actually good for you, and so are naturally fermented pickles. Butter is good for you too.
Guys would get behind this if you add meat. In fact, some people would call it a sandwich or hamburger once you add meat.

My father also didn’t know how to cook, and since there’s no societal pressure on men to learn, he didn’t need to. Dinner rolls, PB and J, cold cuts, Bothwell cheese, coffee and milk. I always reckoned that since Mennonites were farm people the women came up with Faspa so when the men came in from the day's work they would be distracted by the Faspa and not pick at the proper dinner food that they were getting ready.

Every weekend when the parents were off from work, plates of cheese, pickeled food, pate, deli meats, munchy green food, crackers were laid out and we would snack on them all day long. The other point that married women specifically may be missing is that it is an honor to serve your spouse and that’s part of a healthy relationship. You serve each other. He serves you and you serve him. It’s always about “what’s serving me?” That’s a recipe for disaster

Grazing in my family was food between meals. My mom had four boys between the ages of 18-10 in the house at once, and three girls (but they ate so little it was nothing in comparison). So during her once a week shopping, she usually got 20 pounds of sliced turkey, salami, and chicken (60lbs). She also got a couple of pounds of roast beef for my dad's lunches. She bought about half as much cheese, and jars of dill pickles. This was during the 80's thankfully. I don't even want to think what it would cost to feed three 6ft boys going through puberty at once nowadays. Let alone doing it for over a decade with four of them.

However, it is not everyday or meal. Make sure you always have salami or something like that with it and you will have that protein.

The more and more I see of modern society, the more I'm glad as a 42 year old male I'm still single.
A year ago I joined two paid dating websites purely because I fell into the trap that society says you should be in a relationship, the one thing the experience taught me is how self centred people are now.
I tried in my profile to not only say what I was looking for in a partner but also what I could offer, stability, love, protection etc, what I noticed about a lot of the profiles I was seeing (I'm straight BTW so it was women I was matched with) was how self centric they were, it was all I want this, I want that, there was hardly anything about what they would bring to the relationship.
Maybe I'm just out of touch, who knows, but I've decided/ realised I'm going to be single my whole life - and I'm OK with that.

"Girl meals" is done at least 3 days a week at my house not just stopping with dinner. My mother in law has had a lot of her intestine removed as well as a portion of her stomach so nutrition is something I try to pack I to every meal and since she can't eat as much they tend to be smaller meals throughout the day. I've struggled with weight my entire life it getting worse when I was bed bound for a year. We now do 5 meals a day per the nutritionist recommendations. I've lost 120 lbs in 2 years, my son has slimmed up something he struggles with due to medication and my daughter has noticed a change in her energy levels. Decent breakfast between 6 to get us started, mid morning snack around 10 consisting of random fruit pick of the week, lunch at noon which is usually not much more than the snack, dinner at 5 and a small snack around 8 so it has time to settle before dinner. Tunafish, apples and crackers are a fast and healthy light meal which can be turned into tuna melts for those more hungry eaters

One translation of "dinner" into German is "Abendbrot", which literally means "evening-bread".
And eating bread with some kind of cheese or deli meat is still VERY common here.
Germany has the highest per capita consumption of bread and the largest variety in bread.

This type of meal is most common in Germany during the evening. Just called "Abendbrot" or "Brotzeit" and it is practised at least since the battle against Varus and his legions. And it is most likely common in several other countries and cultures, too.

I've been working on breaking the habit of eating full meals every meal because I don't need that much food and that's why I'm obese. If you're not hungry you do not have to eat, our body can handle it. We americans eat way too much, that it's novel concept to see people not eat large meals.

I just started over last year, and every month I'm making improvements on my living area (spent nearly a year homeless, now renting a room in a friend's house). My room is by far the cleanest and most organized part of the house.
Part of that is because I fully schedule and document all of the administrative tasks in life, be they daily, weekly, or monthly.
Part of it is to be an example to the kids in the house that a clean and organized living area reduces stress.
