  • What does it mean for a woman to capture herself in the mirror? Artist Jesse Jones looks at Artemisia Gentileschi’s 'Self Portrait as Saint Catherine of Alexandria' as a composite of three women: Gentileschi herself (1593 - 1654 or later), Saint Catherine (287-305 AD) and the pagan philosopher, mathematician and astronomer Hypatia (around 370-415 AD). All three women are linked by their experiences of violence.
Jesse Jones is a Dublin-based artist. Her practice crosses film, performance and installation. She has created a direct response to Artemisia Gentileschi’s ‘Self Portrait as Saint Catherine of Alexandria’ with her solo exhibition, ‘Mirror Martyr Mirror Moon' at Birmingham’s Ikon Gallery. This is part of our National Treasures programme.
To celebrate our Bicentenary, 12 paintings from the collection are being lent to 12 venues across the UK. See various locations and visit: www.nationalga...

I think Artemisia deliberately chose Saint Catherine because she herself had just spent time dealing with a rape trial that felt exactly like being tortured and broken on a Catherine wheel, the spiked wheel she is holding. I find most of Artemisia's women strong and clear eyed, not afraid to confront either the viewer or herself in a mirror. Her tutor stole her virginity, the trial stole her dignity and her privacy, so this exceptional artist has nothing left to be taken from her except her strength and her talent and that look in her eye says no one, no one, will ever take that from her. What a woman!

Jesse, it's a wonderful painting and I love the way you have combined it with the song/music and othe images. I especially love the way you've taken that song onwards and outwards. Joyful and gorgeous.

I've visited this work at the Ikon twice and sat there by myself for hours, writing poems in response to all these women. Feeling very grateful for their communion and for their presence in a city where I too feel like a stranger. Wonderful.

Artemisia defied the male world even through the pain of a thumb screw, defied them again being a great artist and was so naturally strong as a person she took on any challenge that came her way and usually won. A strong will backed by a wonderful artistic talent which made her so much the individual and in my view such a brilliant painter. This painting for me is so wonderful and I hope the people of Birmingham have enjoyed the chance to see it. Thanks to the national gallery for spreading the joy of Artemisia.

There is always going to be a disconnect between what an artist experiences and what the viewers see as a result of this experience, so if art is less an object and more a process, what we the viewers see is the result of art, and can freely associate whatever we like, as close to magic as I can imagine

Hypatia wasn’t executed. She was brutally lynched by the mob.

we are lucky that the work of Gentileschi and other women artists of the past have survived.
and that they are enjoying a reappraisal in this time.
