  • Sit down, strap in and my god this is a long video!
What is CAN, why do we use it, where does it go, and, what does it look like??
(Turns out - depends on how you want to look at it...)

Very nice video! Great to see the ownership costs over such a long period.
I bought one with a V8 to avoid all the diesel engine problems but still have loads of other faults on mine with only 190k kilometres. Hoping to fix all those and have a long happy ownership, like you!

I've been waiting for this one! Great video as always Joe. You mention bytes but no "nibbles" ie. 4 bits. Love the videos, it makes working from home much more interesting! Thank you!

Thanks so much for the Vid. I've always wondered what the hell the CAN bus is, now I know - and it's not just another LR thing designed to annoy the hell out of me. Goodwork!

Quick question to the poster of the video.
Is there a data base somewhere with a list of can ID? Clearly the 337 ID is medium speed can and related to the BCM due to the door open/ajar inputs, reason why I’m asking this is because I was wondering if you’d ever used this successfully to identify a quiescent drain issue....as we know amp draw on these are a nightmare to diagnose?

Fascinating stuff Joe, thanks. Is the data available out there to let you know what all the various message IDs relate to?
Is it standard across the industry, or does each manufacturer do it's own thing?

    • @joehodgy
      @joehodgy  4 года назад +1

Mark Pewsey unfortunately not - and yeah, everyone does their own thing! There are a few standard things like the CAN messages that get sent by a diagnostic tool (which when connected becomes part of the network) for “read fault codes” and the CAN messages that get returned for basic/generic fault codes...but the actual data is largely proprietary for passenger cars. There are a couple of actual CAN “standards” if you like for other uses, such as tractors where all messages are standardised throughout that industry (at least they were at one time).

Excellent.. that was the culmination of a week's immersion in CAN, I'm into TCPIP so I got this video bang-on. Now I'm at that point where I desperately need to put it in the practical CAN error terms. One I don't want to fork out and buy inappropriate kit, but enough to get me by on my own charity case 03 RR Td6 (love her actually). Would you be kind enough to recommend a DIY guy set up, please? Cheers

I’m from rudimentary TCPIP Ethernet etc. and CAN is beautifully simple isn’t it ?.

Why doesn't Toyota's have CAN BUS issues? Rust, yea, but I've never heard of a Toyota product with these kind of issues.

Hey Joe, fantastic video I bumped into ! Can I ask for a piece of advise..I am looking to buy a 2014 petrol and I have seen these can bus faults which I hVe been told haven been fixed, including ‘stability control not available’, ‘HDC not available’, ‘park brake fault’, ‘2 wheel drive, traction reduced’ ‘Adaptive front lighting system’. Do you see these as major issues ? Is it worth buying the car? 30k miles only. Thanks !

Excellent information really enjoyed the content, as a JLR master tech great to see what’s going on behind the scenes, wish I had the time to go so in depth, what software are you using to gather the hex data,

John Reed thanks! The program is called SavvyCan, plus a dlc to usb interface called a Macchina M2 👍👍

@@joehodgy Hey Joe, are you using the Macchina M2 "Under Dash" (OBD) version or the "Under Hood" version? I've heard Land Rovers filter the CAN messages that are passed through to the OBD port.

Maybe you can help me out here, I just bought a LR3, and the range selector is flashing, but on the dash it shows stuck on low, hdc not available, parking brake light is flashing, and suspension will not go up. I've seen video of transfer case module failing due to corrosion on connectors and pins. Mine has a little bit of corriorsons on the yellow connector, and the module itself. I also opened the module and there's some corrisons on the chips. I also got a code from the transfer case P0915 AND P186D. Should I buy a new module for it or should I check something else???? I really need help with this!

Hi Nigel - HS bus resistors are in the PCM and instrument pack, MS bus are instrument pack and the body controller :)
