The Why Files has become my favorite channel period. I'm 48 years old, the internet is my sole form of entertainment. This is the first comment I've ever made on a channel and their content. Thy Why Files has also become my favourite channel. I'm a 72 year old grandma who discovered the internet in 2003. Like you AJ, I long for the days when we knew where s**t was coming from. Now we have to suspect everyone and everything. Thanks for all of your hard work.
I'm a programmer with a bit of knowledge on this issue. You mentioned systems that are 30 and 40 years old and asked how vulnerable they are. In general, because they are so old, they are ironically less likely to be susceptible to standard virus attacks. They barely talk to the internet at all and that actually is a blessing. Modern systems love talking to the world and this introduces all sorts of vulnerabilities.
But stuxnet was brought in on infected computers physically to the enrichment facility. If those old systems are networked to a computer that gets infected by an outside computer brought into the facility then are they still at risk?
It doesn't really matter if those old systems aren't connected to the internet if they infected computer is brought in and infects those systems as well right?
@@escape692 it's more likely to be designed to mess with the older systems.. they are Gunnar bugger us up some how...but it's fun to guess how right ??
This is not the first use of cyber warfare by the US. The state department sold a bunch of printers to the government of Iraq prior to its invasion of Kuwait. These printers had guidance chips installed in them, used to guide bombs in the opening of the air war for operation Desert Shield.
@@jimmyv1753 yeah I’m sure there is more to it. You’re right, nothing is ever that simple , lol. But oil is needed for almost everything to keep the world running the way we are “accustomed” to. So oil would definitely be something huge
I'm slowly working my way through the back catalog after only discovering this channel a month or so ago. Every, single episode is a masterpiece. Excellent work!
Same here. Funny detail: every time the WF logo appears on screen, ponctuating the naration, I read What The F...k. I suspect it's done on purpose considering the topics :p). BTW, wasn't Jacques de Molay burned by catholic church and Philippe le Bel on year 1314 in Paris? (Just kidding)
@@kellythesinger2945 Same here - Discovered some great work here... amazing to see a private channel put out content that is better from both an informing and entertainment perspective than anything on the History Channel!
AJ, Thank you for all the info but...please... be careful. I see some of your videos are already censured, or altered by parties who are not happy being talked about. Just be careful. We pray for your and Hecklefish's safety.
As a Cybersecurity Engineer/Researcher I've seen dozens of variations of Stuxnet, I've installed a few versions in my lab just to see it and is truly remarkable. Keep in mind this is old news theres much more advanced stuff out there. The biggest vulnerability at the end of the day is you...the human end user. To WF you did an incredible job explaining this to all audiences I plan to share this video with my user base as a resource. Thank you!
You can probably answer a question I have: If the computers in the power plant are not connected to the outside world / internet, how can the makers of Stuxnet then browse around / manipulate the speed of the equipment and make it so the employees don't get error messges etc.?
Originally this was created to disable the 6000 Iranian centrifuges (we used 3000 for the Manhattan Project). But almost everything in life has a Dual Purpose. We constantly play with things Humans don't fully understand and it always amazed me that even though Humans are supposed to be smarter than apes even after getting burned, they will stick their hand in the fire again!
not much of an engineer here but actively studying networking/ cybersecurity. Airgapped networks like the one deployed in Iran to service their nuclear procurement programs are usually only vulnerable to external threats as explained perfectly in the video. Once third-party contractors, who use devices that operate in the open internet, entered the facilities and began working on whatever the task was, the stuxnet virus came into contact with their systems and remained there until the manipulation of the centrifuges happened. The stuxnet virus didnt need to "browse around", it simply needed to mess with the speed of their machinery, something that didnt necessitate accessing the internet. It also didn't need to report back any data as its sole purpose was to cause havoc @@DeejayCharley
@@DeejayCharleyAll of it was done by the virus it self. It was programmed to do so. In simple words you could say the creators teached Stuxnet what it should do once out there and then released to the wild.
It's troubling to see you on edge 😥. You're always so calm and collected even when reporting on the deepest most critical secrets out there. This issue is intense.
It will take less than that for the world to roll back to pen and paper and typewritters. 40 years ago we didn't need any of these systems and it will be a very simple thing for Gen X. We know how to do things that don't require video tutorials, handholding and bleeding hearts.

@@AlexClo-x7ki think you are grossly underestimating what interconnectivity has done to us (society). Its not just what can YOU do, its what can everyone else do or not do. We can't even manufacture hardly anything without computers. We can't operate shipping vessels without satellite guidance and navigation. Look what happened with 1 little container ship that just lost power. Im not even sure we can farm without computers. Nobody is running these 1000+ acre farms with ww2 era farmalls. These modern John Deeres are all computerized and of course patent protected so even if you wanted to, you cant repair them. Even the slaughter house is computerized. All automated lines with computer controlled coolers and freezers. I dont think it even matters if someone knows how to do something the old way if the old infrastructure to do it manually doesn't exist anymore with no replacement capacity either. Just look at the lost methods of sandcasting and other old ways of manufacturing. Can you recover things forgotten? Fat lot of good it does knowing that something could be made that way in a pinch, if nobodys around that can do it.
A.J. I applaud your effort, scary though it is. It takes real courage to dig for facts you often don’t want to know for fear of what those facts may reveal. I’m with you, brother. I was a freelance, realtime court reporter who was hired to take verbatim testimony from some of the world’s leading engineers and scientists in top-secret matters that I still, to this day, 20 years later, cannot speak of. And as scary as some of that testimony was, and as many sleepless nights as I’ve had just having that information rolling around in my head, I forced myself to continue on, knowing that in the next moment life could cease to exist as we know it. I now cherish every moment of every day…every moment…every day.
I read your comment and immediately thought you were being too dramatic but then I got to this part of the video and no, you were not being dramatic. I used to joke that if one day Kim Jong un would wake up in a bad mood and decided to press the red "nuke" button we were doomed, depending on the emotions of a 40-year-old grown kid but after watching this, reality has sinking in and things look much less far-fetched than my infamous joke... I wish for my "ignorance is bliss" mindset of the past now.
@@redacted2275 Speaking of "ignorance is bliss", you can start with the notion that North Korea is a real country and threat, and not a proxy for China to threaten the West.
China have no interest in threatening the west. It's propaganda. I know. I live there. The economies of American enemies are no match or comparison. Neither are their arms budgets. It's all lies by the hidden hand controlling washington and others. Trace the money, for yourselves.
You don’t even have to watch closely, the boat turned into the bridge , just the rules of momentum prove it should’ve went straight before slowing down and then possibly turning ( without power)
Companies like Enron which hid billions of dollars in fraud. CA power companies deliberately created power outages to increase the price of usage, blithely blaming wildfires. It's too involved for me to describe. I believe Covid-19 was a man made pandemic. Its gone off the radar, mostly. But people are still dying because of it.
The cyberwars we are engaged in is another example of us going too far with technology. I don't think technology has improved lives, I think it has degraded us in so many ways.
You and Mr Ballen are two of THE BEST story tellers on RUclips … most personalities lack your skills at delivering the story… you got me hooked.. thank you.
I just found your channel about a week ago and I've watched so many videos. It's great. I've liked, I've subscribed. I wanted to let you and your viewers know something. I've worked in Cyber Security for about 20 years. However bad you think it is, it's actually worse. We are incredibly fortunate that most cyber criminals are far more interested in making money than wanton destruction and that most nation states prefer intelligence gathering and surgical strikes over mass destruction because the tools to kill a nation, even our own nation, already exist. You mentioned 30 and 40 year old software being vulnerable. It doesn't take decades to find a zero day. So that software that's three months behind on patches can be just as deadly as they software that 3 years behind. When I watched your video about the Carrington Event, I had a sanguine thought. I thought that was the only type of thing that would make my job obsolete. As long as data can be communicated between any two systems, there is cyber security risk. I want to say that your coverage and explanation of Stuxnet in this video was incredible. I cannot believe how well you described and explained everything. You took something very technical and turned it into something anyone can understand. That's a rare talent.
Unlike physical bombs that can be mutually dismantled and that process observed by both sides , you can develope attack software anywhere and totally in secret . The cyber genie is out of the bottle and can never be withdrawn .

Dude i remember freaking out watching terminator 2. The thought of computers controlling our nuclear weapons was scary as hell but I was able to say it's just a movie. Watching this episode though has me worried all over again because it just takes a few hackers a little bit of time to make a program that could and would destroy us.
When I was an IT student at university we received our books for free and where hired to proof the the projects in the book by a reputable company but about mid-way through the book we realized we were writing a 0 day virus that would create a backdoor account on PCs using Active X. It was a pretty big deal because this was a beginners book so 1st year students and instructors were creating a giant network of compromised systems. This was in the early 90s so we reported our finding to name your favorite 3-digit gov operation and the book was pulled, but who knows what damage that virus did or what its purpose was.

This episode is awesome, we had to study this incident in Electronic Warfare School, it was common knowledge for us that an operative "dropped" an infected USB in the parking lot outside the nuclear plant. Then just waited for someone to plug it in and check the contents. It's human nature for people to be curious, and that was easily capitalized upon.

I am Former MI (computers and electronic platoon). Rest assured, the US has all of this covered. We have methods of detecting any changes (even so much as a single letter or number) in the software running the more important operations of warfare or CWF. And these methods are now incapable of being tampered with (despite having flaws in the past). Nonetheless, the one thing that I myself still worries about is human error.... or worse yet, simple human interference by those who you think you can trust but shouldn't. Is your government YOUR government? Who is in control? Think about that. And as a Programmer (for 30+ years now), I pose this question ... Is "SAFE" just an illusion. We are secured ....until we choose not to be. When you trust something enough, you get lax and lazy and completely vulnerable. That's all it takes.
What about peace? Since Russia appears to be losing War in Ukraine, wouldn't now be the right time to negotiate a cease fire. Ending war early saving millions of lives. Also since China's economy is about to collapse, wouldn't now be the right time to negotiate a better, more fair trade deal? Including more transparency, human rights and deescelation of tension.
Don’t be fooled-Russia’s dragged civilians and military personnel over the border! Guess who will negotiating for ransom ? And maybe not money, but nuclear superiority , etc. China s always won by divide / separate and conquer. Think on it.
@@hackman669 I think he covered that with "those who you think you can trust but shouldn't". Peace and trust are idealistic, but they are not reality. A perfect world utopia is achievable. I wish I could live in a world where we didn't have to worry about such things, however I won't bury my head in the sand like so many others. People don't like scary things so they tend to avoid them. When the scary thing is something that may not be avoidable, then the only prudent option is to prepare for it and stay vigilant.

Promoting slackers and hang arounds to management positions making extremely sensitive decisions with little to no technical knowledge, it is scary to say the least. More recently the push for inclusion has also pushed very unqualified people into these same positions, god help us. The one very well known northeast college I worked at for a year planning their Domain consolidation and security decided to hire a 3rd party to implement even though their engineering teams were fully capable, When the POC environment went up it was immediately hacked. Why? The "Security" individuals they hired knew that this particular college uses public IP addresses, displaying a Netstat at any point on any PC shows Chinese IP addresses constantly hitting these machines, that's the price of using a public address for bragging rights. But that's not why they were hacked. One of these dipshits set his password on the POC environment to "Password1" I kid you not. He was not fired for this act of idiocy. AJ-- The Stuxnet report is one of your best efforts, and cannot be faulted. Your use of computer security terms was accurate and entirely in context. Such a stellar effort came as a surprise, since I had not visited WF? in a while, and after watching only a portion of the UFO/alien activity report (aliens eating humans, etc.), had written off WF? as a credible publisher. But with the Stuxnet report, I immediately realized my misjudgment. Keep the editorial hat firmly in-place, and I and many others will remain subscribed. There is nothing wrong with factual portrayal of mystery and extremely curious, even foreboding events. There is more than enough such material to go around. Rod Serling captured a massive TV audience with his "Twilight Zone"-- and that was entirely faction. Just imagine what an audience you might gather with fact-based reports like Stuxnet. The temptation under RUclips is to tease the algorithm to boost ratings. Yet, in this report, at least, you have demonstrated you know where the boundaries lie. Well done-- we look forward to more.
I worked for a federal agency. We weren't allowed usb devices. If we managed to get one in and connect it nothing happened. Only special biometric devices would connect. A higher security area that I didn't work in wouldn't even allow personal electronic devices in the office.
I'm pretty sure he said, "a campaign of cyber intrusion, disruption and sabotage of Irani *nuclear facilities*. If they were really concerned about this information they would've had the video taken down, but it's still interesting!!
Wow. I couldn’t believe how complex Stuxnet was, but hearing about NZ makes my stomach turn. No amount of code should be able to cause that much destruction. And who knows what else the US Government is using code like that for. But amazing video as always man! Kept me thoroughly interested all the way through! Thanks for watching, Gabriel! This episode was stressful to research. There are so many scary pieces of code out there. And now that I'm hyper-aware of this, I'm seeing it. Look at the power outages happening around the world, especially India. Suddenly power grids are failing everywhere? Eh... something isn't right. Oh! Fermi's Paradox is high on the list. I'm just trying to find something new to say on the subject. And black holes and worm holes... I LOVE those topics. I think it's time we dig in to those.

Count me in as a new subscriber. Now retired I was in the computer networking field (IT) since the late 70's. And viruses were abundant even before the internet. Usually transmitted via floppy disks as users would take their work home to continue on their infected home computer and then insert that infected disk into their work computer. There was really not much precautions back then, but I personally had to reformat hundreds of hard drives just to remove a virus. This was very costly to companies that didn't regulate protocol on their computers in the workplace. But now it's way beyond that. And I seriously doubt any country is going to just say, "Hey let's stop the cyber wars". But now that we are so dependent on IOT devices is a scary thought.
At 11 minutes, 28 seconds, your audio drops out after you say "Iranian." I'm 46, I grew up at the "end" of the cold war. But it's not over. The players and the game have changed. Think about how everyone is at each other's throats, using the internet can be more destructive, disruptive, than a wall and a couple nukes. Aah i was told that exact same thing buy a Feller who's boiler i was repairing,,what you say is exactly what he told me makes sense to me .

@@DeejayCharleyoutside contractors brought the virus in on their own infected equipment. He covered that.
not much of an engineer here but actively studying networking/ cybersecurity.

Thanks for watching, Shoes. Great comment. Everyone should pay attention to what you've said.

After I left Microsoft (Travel was too much) I worked at several fortune 100 companies in designing secure Enterprise Server Networks, Tier level and air gapped systems, MFA and lateral attack surfaces protected.

@@TheWhyFiles Awesome to hear! Well about the topics coming up anyway… lol. I think Carl Sagan said it best when he said there are either a lot of Aliens or none, and each option is equaly terrifying. And as Elon Musk says, we’ll never live long enough to know unless we stop being a one-planet civilation. Definitely a good topic to dig into but one that can send you through a wormhole of your own. Suddenly it’ll be the only thing you’ll wanna research. 😅😅
@@TheWhyFiles the toolbox that the CIA uses that for leaked was a truly scary thing. The ability to hack into a computer and put files on it without leaving a trace that it was hacked is seriously messed up.
AI will prevent us from "not" becoming a 1 on the Kardashev scale. No worries. Great concise explanation, ty.
Stux was not complex. It relied upon human behaviour.
kinda equivalent of dumpster diving a target.
That it only targetted those particular devices at that location? ... that was epic.
Going through the full library of videos now that you have me hooked and man, the effort that you put into production is nuts every video it’s phenomenal
I get so excited when people notice the effort that goes into the actual production. Thanks so much, Chase.
As some one who deals with IT and security I wish I could invite this more. Thanks for a great episode and such great investigation integrity
I am so happy to have discovered this channel, I am hooked! AJ and Hecklefish keep you informed and entertained and I have already binged several videos. A channel worthy of a sub!
Love your format, your back story, your composed dedication and of course, your off-sider, the wise cracking counterfoil ‘Heckles’ as we call him in Australia. Please never stop 🇦🇺
Watching your content and realizing how right you are as All Flights nationwide are grounded due to the alerts of digital outage. This is so scary. Thanks for sharing and keeping it real.
Monkey werx is another good channel. Truth stream media is amazing too.
I would like to ask what your source is, because there was no coverage on spontaneous landings
@@RomanumChristum it was on Jan 12th. Think the aviation authorities decided it was a corrupted database file to blame.
@@Looshfarmer I was on a plane on January 12th. No such thing happened.

Great video. Getting my comment on, to help with that algorithm. I'll share it to an email too. Great work, you are appreciated.
AJ & Hecklefish……. YOU GUYS ROCK !!!!! I have viewed every episode, I rewatch most, and am always looking forward to the next one !!! Thank you for making some of the most informative yet extremely entertaining videos out there on the internet. You are appreciated !!!
This channel is awesome! Thank you for the great narration and content. I really enjoy the topics you cover. I found this channel because of a random comment on another channel I watch. Glad they mentioned you and keep up the great work!
You have done it once again A J.
Great job explaining this incredible threat to nations around the world.
Absolutely love your channel.
You are a gem man. Its rare to find channels that make good content these days
I think, hands down, you and your channel are tier one. If I had the money to donate to a channel, it would only be The Why Files. My wife fell in love this channel when she leaned over to see what I was marvelling over. Since than every time you drop a new video, we watch it on the big screen. Thanks AJ & Heckle Fish for your awesome content!
At 11 minutes, 28 seconds, your audio drops out after you say "Iranian."
Looks like you said nuclear after that, but I was just wondering if you knew, or did it on purpose, or the RUclips algorithms auto censored you?
Maybe Stuxnet did it?
Thanks for great content!
You're channel delivers 100% satisfaction every time.
it's a wonder WEF hasn't brought the world to screaming halt in the insane name of climate change
Iranian nuclear facilities I believe.
Come on guys - there’s a REASON he didn’t SAY it.
See, when I watched this last time a few months back I could swear I've heard him say "nuclear facilities", and upon watching this now again randomly, I noticed this... Therefore I tried to see if anyone else notice and I found your comment....
P.s. Try to put the time in like on a digital clock in the future, it will let you jump right to that time E.g. 11:28
Yea I noticed the dead audio too just now. Big brother?
I'm loving your content! I only found you recently, but I'm steady working through your videos. Great job!
Stumbled across your channel. As a scientist. I appreciate the research you put into the videos. I only wish they were longer. Keep up the great work
Have to appreciate the ingenuity, creativity and engineering that goes into such a sophisticated virus. I mean...Terrifying though. That's why the Battlestar Galactica went as analog as possible.
No question about it. From a technical perspective, Stuxnet has been called "a work of art".
This was all my idea.
@@HecklefishMoriarty lol !!!
@@HecklefishMoriarty I knew it! 😉
AJ, this episode is a re-watch for me, but it is very thought provoking. I’m using these vids to approach issues with my teen boys in a context they enjoy far more than a dad lecture.
Right, because teen boy really need to know about nuclear enrichment technology.
Have you tried baseball?

Thank you Patrick for keeping us informed and updated on things happening. I hadn't heard about all this and it definitely is IMPORTANT TO KNOW!
Really enjoyed this video. It's strange I somehow haven't heard about this. I'm an IT contractor with the Navy and I'm getting my degree in cyber security and information assurance. Cyberwarfare definitely interest me and the offensive side of cyber. It's a deep rabbit hole.
This is a really excellent, captivating and high quality video! I really enjoyed watching this. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it, Michael! If there are any topics you'd like covered, let me know.
Love your work!! Thanks for all you do to keep us informed, people truly don't know how much work it takes to put these videos together!! Thanks to you and hecklefish 😉👍
Great work as always. I love you personality, demeanor and content. It’s very wholesome. Keep up the great work ❤
This is another topic that I already had all of the information you talked about, but you tell it SO FREAKING WELL I just had to listen to the whole thing.
Iv watched every one you’re episodes in two weeks! AMAZING ! Someone please give this man a show please ! He deserves it !
Great great video. From start to finish. Some really good research has gone into this and the presentation is top notch too. Really making an avid fan out of me. I really like the conspiracy videos too. The sales pitch and then debunk setup is great imo. I hope you keep them coming AJ. Your content is very entertaining.
Well done bruv ! Was wondering if anyone else has spoken about this?
Thank you for taking something very complex and making a vid that explained it so simply and clearly. Even though it is absolutely frightening.
Awesome content! Please keep it up. - a new fan
Welcome aboard, Tony!
Ooooh, I love new fins! Oops, I mean fans.
I'm 46, I grew up at the "end" of the cold war. But it's not over. The players and the game have changed. Think about how everyone is at each other's throats, using the internet can be more destructive, disruptive, than a wall and a couple nukes. With nukes things could be over, but using the internet vulnerability issues could cripple any country from the inside and cause all kinds of problems. It would put neighbors against each other and you wouldn't need an invading army until clean up time.
Enjoyed it but Cyber war doesn’t worry me as much as an actual nuclear attack . We’ll see if it’s a much safer place today
@@chris24j48 cyber war may actually be as dangerous...imagine life without electricity...millions who depend on it will die, in hospitals on ventilator, in ICU...tgos machines relies on electricity
Scary stuff ! I said this to a friend of mine back in the early 70's that someday computers will cause troubles that we never heard of.
You have got to be one of the most knowledgeable human beings on the planet. I just found your channel, and I’ve been so impressed with your delivery of information. Having Hecklefish was an excellent idea, as he brings humor to some very dark topics. Thank you for this channel!!
I fall asleep to these videos. I have to rewatch episodes to get it all in. I love how it isn't crazy conspiracy theories, but it goes over ever angle of a theory to make sense of it all. So good.
Outstanding AJ! Thanks for giving us all something serious to think about. Keep up the good work my friend.
