Love how the main theme for TotK at this point is Colgera's Theme. More memorable than nearly every other track (The Final Fall beats it for me)
I think TOTK is phenomenal in gameplay and exploration, but it let me down in a few areas. On the other hand, BG3 astounded me in every way. I wouldn't be mad if either one won, but I feel like BG3 deserves it more.
Lol how did bg3 deserves it? Its not even an actual game lol its a clicking talking dialogue simulator it didnt even offer anything new, it's the same turned base game that we already seen millions times with an improved visuals lol, while zelda with its new unbelievable creative stuff was never seen before in gaming history! The combat is fun, it doesn't have to be new. Zelda didn't do anything new, so I don't understand what part of that game you're trying to praise.

Starfield and MW3 kinda soils it, but they are still great games
I still don't think 2023 was nearly as strong as 1998 , 2001 , 2004 , etc. 2023 was "good" but not great.

Personally I think while hogwarts legacy doesn't deserve the title, I think it should just to prove the pos stream haters wrong. People got doxxed just because they wanted to play a fun game.

don't get me wrong, I loved Hogwarts Legacy as a Harry Potter fan, but I can freely admit it has flaws, like a subpar story, an somewhat empty open world, too many mindless collectibles and good lord, for a game that claims to be an RPG, it has literally no choices that actually matter and how you play has no influence whatsoever on what happens and how characters act.
It is more an adventure game than an RPG.

I actually would be dissapointed if bg3 doesn't win. TotK dissapointed me. Its great, don't get me wrong, but its mostly more of the same. Between the two, I think BG3 will have a much stronger influence over the games industry.
I'd honestly be sadder if bg3 didn't win. Totk was phenomenal, but in the end it was mostly a lot more of something (great) we already got in BoTW. BG3 being a real, honest to God RPG in an Era where the term has been so diluted, and being as mind-blowingly good as it is, deserves recognition.
Alan Wake 2 is just pure art on many different levels. It is my game of the year
I still think the game that took both me and pretty much everyone by surprise was Hi-Fi Rush. In a gaming climate that saw a heavy downpour of open world games, it was a fresh change of pace to get a well constructed, linear story. It was even better to get some of the most kickass rhythm-action hack and slash gameplay the like of DMC5 that was not only hot off the heals of Metal: Hellsinger, but didn't take itself nearly as seriously. Definitely my pick of the litter.
Hi-Fi Rush was so damn good. It deserves more attention.
Maybe-Not-Hot Take: Octopath 2 should've been nominated for "Best Music" over TotK, and "Best RPG" over FF16.

I had the same 3 favorite games since 1998. Octopath Traveler II changed that. It wasn't even considered by the mainstream, but it's my game of the last two decades
As someone who enjoyed octopath traveler, should I play octopath traveller 2, considering it is made by modern square enix?
@@leargamma4912If you enjoyed the first Octopath, then 2 will definitely blow your socks off since it improves on it in every conceivable way. Plus, Team Asano is a different part of Squenix that also made one of my favorite games of last year with Live A Live.
@@leargamma4912 OT2 is a huge improvement over OT1, especially when it comes to the party itself.
I could not get into Octopath I despite trying the demo on two separate occasions years apart, but I LOVED Octopath II. I put over 115 hours into it and did everything except the superboss. It's such a shame that it came out very early in a year full of so many big budget hits (not to mention Square-Enix barely marketed it) because it's been completely overshadowed and forgotten by most people.

Totk, is awesome as a game, I loved playing it.
I didn't, in retrospect, like how it screws up with its own lore and botw's story. It's story has way too many flaws for me to fully enjoy it. It has very high story highlights, but also very low lows.
And i hate that it "ruins" botw by "making botw look like tech demo". Botw doesn't deserve to be sullied by the sequels story AND by fans.
TLDR: Totk, Great game, bad sequel.
Bg3 I believe more deserves the 1st place, totk 2nd, and I have not yet played bg3
I haven't played anything else since TOTK came out. I don't have a lot of time to play games, I'm 54, but I absolutely love it. I also just got the Master Sword, time to wreck everything!
I would love to see Alan Wake 2 or Baldur’s Gate 3 Win GOTY
My GOTY is probably Street Fighter 6, for the same reason Tears of the Kingdom is yours. It made me feel like a kid again. Of the nominees here though, I'd say TotK or Baldur's Gate 3 deserve the win. I had a ton of fun with both of them as well.
More like from least good but still awesome to the most awesome. Also it's a shame that Hi-Fi Rush wasn't a GOTY nominee. At least it was a nominee in other categories.
I'm torn because I think that Baldur's Gate 3 is a monumental achievement in gaming. And I think it has thrown down the gauntlet to other studios for what RPG's can truly be. But it is flawed, and the computer 'DM' is absolutely lacking that human touch that makes D&D so dynamic and special. I'd just about give it GOTY even so.
Both BG3 and TOTK are monumental achievements for their respective genres, but I do have to give the edge slightly to TOTK in my book simply because it felt much more polished upon release despite being on a really weak system, whereas I encountered a lot of bugs and performance dips in BG3 come Act 3, some of which pretty greatly impacted the play.
It's still an amazing game, and I'd consider it GOTY just about any other year, but TOTK definitely slightly edges it out in my book.
I'm still waiting to even try BG3 because I've read so much negative stuff online about Act 3, e.g. horror stories of people's 140-hour save file basically becoming unusuable. Boggles my mind how it got so much praise for releasing as a supposedly "finished" game. Meanwhile, in my 150 hours in TotK, I encountered exactly *zero* bugs, and that game has some of the most ground-breaking mechanics in any game, ever.
I would say that Baldur's gate 3 will 100% win.
It is no doubt in my mind.
Or at the least it SHOULD win.
Mostly because TOTK, while a great game, isn't as new.
It is BOTW with extra added ontop.
While BG3 is a completely new take and blowing up the gates for CRPG back into the mainstream.
BG3 is superior and should win.
I like how both of the top two are titles that feel like they're nigh impossible for their successors to match. I don't know how long it'll take BG4 to happen or what the next Zelda game will be, but they're gonna have a rough time measuring up.
The next Zelda game will probably have to switch its focus to stand out.

Really enjoyed totk but ganondorf was so 1 note it hurts and they didn't bother explaining what happen to all the sheikah technology, which btw 4 of them are massive structures. Not that the game awards hold any weight but hope baldur's gate wins.

Loved ToTK even more than BoTW, but it still kinda feels like BoTW: The Royale/Master Quest, sometimes even a fan mod/remix.
The depths being so empty and 90% of the loot being Amiibo costumes from the last game, slightly remixed overworld, and samey sky islands brought it down for me.
Yeah it's better than botw, but even re4r felt it had less in common with Og RE4 than totk had with botw.
I loved all of these games (except for BG3, which I haven't played yet).
RE4 Remake modernizes one of the greatest action games of all time and it just feels smooth as butter to play, I also really liked how it used the Dualsense features (and the DLC was also fantastic!). Spider-Man 2 had a great story, the new symbiote powers were dope, and it probably has the best traversal in any Open World game, to the point where I barely used fast travel. Mario Wonder was the breath of fresh air 2D Mario desperately needed and was just an all-around JOY to play from front to back. Alan Wake 2 is an amazingly unique experience that's just so wonderfully weird, creepy, and original, and it improves on the first game so much in literally every single regard whilst also containing maybe the coolest 15-minute sequence in the history of gaming (you know which one I'm talking about).
And then, there's Zelda. What a fucking triumph of a video game. They took BotW's dedication to player freedom and creativity and turned it up to 11 with some of the most insane mechanics in any video game, ever, while also bookending the game with the most epic opening and ending in the whole franchise. I put 140 hours into this game (without encountering a single bug!) and I've still got loads of stuff to do when I return to it. TotK is my personal GOTY, no doubt about it.
You talk as though you've played Baldur's Gate 2, but somehow are surprised that it's pulling from D&D? It's always has. The first two games could be turned based entirely, and really still were turned based on the back end, Just not necessarily in how it was presented to the player. It was never not D&D
Those were my thoughts, exactly. BG 1 & 2 used a sort of real-time system that allowed you to pause to give your party members commands, similar to the combat systems in Planescape: Torment and KotoR (although watered down quite a bit in the latter). The Baldur's Gate games have always been D&D games at their core and are even set in the Forgotten Realms. I imagine most of the people playing BG3 haven't played the first two, so they're not aware of this. It's also possible that they're mistaking the Dark Alliance games for the original two, which would lead them to think that it was a hack n' slash Action RPG in the vein of Diablo.
I admittedly haven't played BG3 (my computer could not handle that many GB of Storage), but BG2 is my second favorite game of all time behind the original Deus Ex. I'm glad to see that this new game has revived interest in this fantastic franchise and may even lead some gamers to experience the original two games.
Also, I have to say that Jon Irenicus is still my favorite villain in all of gaming. Getting David Warner to voice him was a stroke of genius.

The RE4 Ramake will go down as one of the greatest games of All Time and it’s in my Top 10 VideoGames of All Time and I’m Loving Alan Wake 2
I really hope BG3 wins, one of the best games I have ever played. As for TOTK, I am glad for everyone that enjoyed it, but as someone who loved BOTW I just did not vibe with TOTK in almost every aspect.
What made you like botw but not totk?
My favorites were RE4 and TOTK but I think its probably gonna be Baldurs Gate

Personally, and I say this as a Zelda fanatic, BG3 just peaked it for me. But then Zelda and Baldurs Gate, alongside Mass Effect stand proudly in my top 3 franchises of all time, so to see 2 amazing releases from 2 of them was a dream for me.

Honestly, the only game I've played from 2023 so far is System Shock Remake. I was super hyped for that game and got it on release day. While I do strongly prefer the 1994 original (one of my favorite 4th gen games) for a number of reasons, it was still a solid remake and is definitely more accessible for most gamers than the original version. It would be cool if Nightdive eventually remade more Looking Glass Studios games, as that company was probably my all-time favorite developer (especially on account of the original Thief duology).
I'm happy to see that BG3 has become such a success. While I haven't played it yet since my computer can't handle that many GB of storage, I'm a fan of the original two games, and BG2 is my second favorite game of all time behind Deus Ex. It's great to see this franchise get more attention, and hopefully it will lead more people to experience the original two games. I still consider Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn to be Bioware's magnum opus, and they never quite captured the same incredible combination of quality and quantity in any of their subsequent games.
While I appreciate the amount of people who love TOTK, that game killed my dad and robbed my house and I hate it so entirely it’s not even funny. I feel insane like I went into that game READY for fun I’m not a pessimist or anything I LIKE to LIKE games but I mean I must’ve loved botw for different reasons than everyone else cause I just felt NOTHING with TOTK.
The building is fun but I mean at what cost. AT WHAT COST?!

Nah. There’s better games than Totk. Elden Ring for example.
After finally completing ToTK, there is no other game here that I feel comes close to it. BG3 is a masterpiece in its own right, but when I see how much ToTK has come from BotW (and the Zelda franchise as a whole) in everyway, its definitely deserving of GotY, if not Nintendo's greatest game to date IMO.
It has a lot of problems
I really dislike the direction the series has gone. I hate the shrines and the chrcklist nature of upgrading via collecting nick knacks. I vastly prefer dungeons, and Divine Beasts and Temples are not a good enough replacement. I know the new direction is popular, but it makes me not interested in the series.
You must not have played any other Zelda game then. Because almost all of them are better than Totk in almost every single way.

Tears of the Kingdom didn't meet my expectations, it surpassed them by a lot.
I 100% completed it, which I didn't do with BoTW, a single playthrough of ToTK was 650 hours for me, where multiple of BoTW with the DLC was around that.

Although I don't think it will win neither, it is criminal that HiFi Rush got 5 nominations and not best directing (when the whole premise of the game is 4 of those nominations working in perfect synchronization, which is insane it actually properly does it) nor GOTY.
Like really? The jury consider it one of the best in so many categories but not enough for the category of the best overall? Why? Is it because you need a dark narrative or be part of a nostalgic IP to even be considered for that award? Shame on them, honestly.
TGAs almost always favor high budget, cinematic titles. While usually there's some token indie title that got super popular during the year that makes GOTY nomination (Hades, Celeste, Stray, etc.), the number of quality high budget titles ensured they didn't have space for one this year. The one exception was It Takes Two winning GOTY 2021, and its competition was not super mainstream for the most part (other nominations were Resident Evil Village, Metroid Dread, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Deathloop, and Psychonauts 2).
I definitely feel bad for lower budget titles like HiFi Rush and Octopath II that got overshadowed or forgotten about because of how stacked this year has been. 4 of the 6 GOTY nominations were released within just a couple months of the 2023 deadline.
BG3 > TotK.

I feel like rather totk or baldurs gate 3 wins game of the year will depend on how many people actually beat the games because BG3 becomes quite buggy in the third act.

Quite refreshing to see someone being so positive about TOTK. Imho, I agree that it should be a GOTY, it's much more innovative than other games on the list, outside of Mario Wonder which is my personal GOTY, but I understand that TGA doesn't like platformers that much. BG3 is a great game, but more about new level of quality than meaningful innovations

Tears of the Kingdom was boring for me unfortunately, and I dont like the story. Baldurs Gate 3 was an rpg I wanted for a very long time.
I think they should win it, but im expecting it to go to Zelda.
Just the fact Baldur's Gate 3 was nominated at all is an achievement.
CRPGs don't often get as much recognition as console games do.

In the 9 years The Game Awards have been around, Nintendo won Game of the Year only once, and that was for Breath of the Wild. Given that the Link's Awakening and Skyward Sword remakes didn't get a single nomination that I could find, it's not Zelda bias; people just really, REALLY like Breath of the Wild. And Tears of the Kingdom expands on that game and got extremely rave reviews so it being a nominee is not at all surprising to me.
I wouldn't call it yet because Baldur's Gate 3 was a massive phenomenon comparable to what happened with Elden Ring (which won GOTY last year). The award could easily go to either.

Even if I’m entirely rooting for TotK due to it by and large my favorite game of 2023, we’ve had such an impressive lineup of games this year that I honestly wouldn’t be mad if it lost either.

Is it bad that I’ve been a life long gamer, I’m now in my early 30s with a family and the only game on this list I even played or care to play was TotK?
Maybe it’s a lack of having any newer console except for the switch or maybe it’s a hot take but I don’t have any interest in ever playing any 2D Mario, Alan wake, baldurs gate, or spider man. I grew up on RE4 and after loving first person RE7/8, I have no interest in a 4 remake either.
Spider-Man 2 deserves to be GOTY, just like how Spider-Verse 2 needs to win an Oscar with no excuses
Spider-Man 2 isn't close to the same level of game as BG3 and ToTK.
They played it way too safe going from Spider-Man 1 to it, it's not a bad game by any measure, but it has 0 chance of winning.
Zelda just like cant get goat since it's up against games that were the ground up. Zelda just recycled am insane amount sadly
I genuinely do not know how anyone can consider Zelda as game of the year. The characters were as bland as bland gets. Most of the features were in the last game. People are really distracted by the build mechanic. Its great but thats the only thing of note the game has. The story is generic as hell. I just dont get how people can rank it so highly. Its funny how much of a stranglehold zelda and mario games have on people. Take out the nostalgia and the game sits well below BG3.

Remakes shouldn't be nominated they had there chance and its better to go to a new game instead. Kinda on edge with mario wonder as i feel it came out to recent and close to the game awards. But still better then a remake.
Super Mario Bros Wonder came out a month and a week before the cutoff date, it's 100% fair game.
If it’s a straight 1:1 remake I agree, but remakes provide a studio an opportunity to really build on a game, or even completely overhaul it. It’s kind of like movies-they’re remade all the time, and some even get Best Picture nominations (recent examples: All Quiet on the Western Front, A Star Is Born). If they were a 1:1 remake like Gus Van Sant’s Psycho, yeah, folks won’t be impressed. But if the remake gives itself a reason for being beyond nostalgia and knocks it out of the park, a nom can be deserved. (But, like you, I’d rather see new IP nominated over remakes.)

Tears of the Kingdom is absolutely peak game this year! Also, Colgera is such an epic boss theme!

Octopath's a good game but not on the level of BG3 or TOTK. Hogwarts has all the baggage of JK Rowling with it and even if you could ignore all of that, it feels like it wasted both it's own and the fans time with open-world countryside rather than condensing the story to Hogwarts and Hogsmeade only and making those two locations as in-depth and stuffed to the brim with content as possible.

Seems Nintendo was interested in buying the judge’s approval again. As if it wasn’t embarrassing enough for them to buy unearned accolades for ToTK, now they’re trying to buy GoTY for it on top of that.
ToTK isn’t the worst game ever made, but it also is FAR from even earning a nomination for GoTY

I think there is no way Spider man 2 is better than Resident Evil 4 Remake
My top 4 would be Final Fantasy XVI, Tears of the Kingdom, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Spider-Man 2. No idea how the rank them after that
