The XIII Asian Games were held in Bangkok, Thailand, between 6 to 20 December 1998. It was the fourth time that the Thai capital have hosted the Asiad, the first were in 1966, and then in 1970; which were to be hosted in Seoul, South Korea, but they pulled out due to both financial and security reasons. Bangkok would later hold the event for the third time in 1978, which would have been held in Singapore; and then in Islamabad, Pakistan, but both have later dropped out from their hosting duties.
Along with its Vintage Television (VTV) block, the games was broadcasted in the Philippines on IBC-13. This commercial break was aired during the bronze medal match between the Philippines and Kazakhstan in the men's basketball tournament.
