That is absolutely cool, but allow me to say though, that even with the best intentions, something like this would have never been allowed nowadays AS IT IS, let alone if the family was white and the dude black.
I don't think it's skin color as much as it is a cultural issue for most people. They don't want their kids and potential grandkids turning their back on their cultural beliefs and heritage. We need a show like this now more than ever. Too bad Uncle Phil isn't here anymore to help us out. The first (and real) Aunt Viv and Uncle Phil could teach and give over a message the way nobody else could.
@@NH-tb2sm couldn’t agree more. I truly believe we were well on our way to ridding ourselves of mass bigotry & hatred and it seems to have massively regressed in recent years. I blame the media mostly. Uncle Phil was an amazing character, an inspirational character and Aunt Viv wow...
Uncle Phil couldn't fix society today. Society runs itself, it is its own emergent entity, so the only way to fix society is to properly educate society so the country as a whole can grow with less bullshit prejudice and over sensitive SJWs that kill it for everyone. lol for dramatic effect, and to ensure the viewers are 100% certain what the other characters are reacting to while the cameras pan over all their faces
the point of the scene was not to demonstrate that black families are racist, it is the exact opposite. The reaction of the family is supposed to represent how a white conservative family would have reacted
White people physically abused and klled people for years out of racism. That's different to stereotyping and bigotry. Nice try though. Black people know what they're capable of so are rightly reluctant to date them
@old school I thought I already responded to this comment, but I'll do it again. I am so straight that I'm not even attracted to female butts. Also not trans, I don't even know what makes so determined to live the way they do.
This was awesome. Laughing so hard. As a "TALL" guy who dated a black girl, myself, we got the same reaction. Then settled in just fine. Sometimes I think they didn't even notice I was TALL anymore.
@justice for juicy just because laws were made to combat discrimination in the 70s, doesn’t mean people are still not going to be prejudice and have judgements of people. It’s like naively thinking that because we made murder illegal, murder will not happen. People who think that discrimination ended after such a long time of no repercussions don’t have reality in their scope
I'm the black guy from an immigrant family who married a white girl from a rich family. We fell in love when we were both quite young (15). Her father liked me because he could talk math and science with me. Her mother did not approve and tried to get in our way. We've been married for over 24 years now. We lost her father a few years ago. Her mother is still pretty cold to me, but I'm always respectful so there is at least peace.

The front door also say blacks only, after this scene they poured hot coffee all over him with multiple different condiments. They even gave him a name meaning ignorant they only use for white people, they were yelling and screaming at him telling him he doesn’t belong here, they also mention how superior they were, and beat him up because he’s white and they felt like it. They kept yelling and being hateful. They even created a cult this episode to kill and hang more white people hey find. They even spit in his face and kicked him while he was down. This show is racist asf....
I love how Hilary (in her own way) didn’t notice that they weren’t talking about his height but that he was white. And her not finding him that “Tall” meant she didn’t see a problem with him. I wish they would have given Ashley a line when Will’s mom said she was against the union. I loved when later Carlton sang “Jungle Fever”
Hilary, despite her ditsy personality, arguably lived a more sophisticated lifestyle than her siblings and cousin. She was savvy enough to understand racism itself, as a Black woman; but it just went over her head that the rest of the family was speaking in code when they said "tall." Hilary was so materialistic that she probably felt that skin color should be the least of anyone's concerns when finding a lover, which is why the interracial relationships was no big deal to her. Carlton obviously had a ton of White friends from that fancy prep school, so he was desensitized to the idea of interracial romances in a way his parents weren't. Ashley, being the youngest, was probably extremely open-minded about interracial dating, and she just didn't speak up in that moment because Phil and Viv had trained her to be "polite" around her elders. Will is the logical choice for being the one (out of all the youngsters) to say the quiet part out loud -- because, despite Will's faults, he's just an all-around good guy, and he knew the adults were acting stupid but he wanted to try to smooth things over with charm and finesse.
Its funny how Will comes from the ghetto yet hes the only one who can get past the racial divide EDIT: didnt think this would get so many likes. Thanks every one. And i wasnt trying to make this a race thing i was just commenting on how Will was just straight up while everyone else were skirting around the subject
bizarre comment, as if everyone from lower economic communities are prejudice? There are plenty of people of all races who are educated and well off who are prejudice. Being from 'the ghetto' has nothing to do with anything. Also if you contextualize it - These people grew up in the late fifties, sixties and seventies when racial relations were worse than they are today ( even though in 2021 we still have a looooong way to go).
As a tall man myself, I always loved Fresh Prince growing up. The way they tackled social issues honestly and openly was great. And honestly? I grew up in a town that was like 99.99% tall. This show really opened my eyes to a lot of prejudice in the world around me.
Yes and now society hates you for being tall and everyone who is tall, you know that Tall Privilege that I as a Tall guy myself am still waiting to receive?!......
Yea well, I was already an adult when this show aired. And for the time period, it wasn't all too realistic. Sure there were black judges like Uncle Phil, but they didn't live in mansions with butlers. Plus they stayed out of social issues and remained kind of neutral. Its amazing how times change. I, too, grew up in a town that was just about ALL 'tall.' In fact, there were exactly 3 black families (then a 4th moved in) and one Hispanic family. I still live in the town. When I last checked, 'tall' people now make up just 38% of the population!
The funniest thing in this whole scene is the interpretation that Geoffrey intentionally led Janice’s fiancé into the room after the first guy just to troll everyone.
Clayton my mom new my “Tall” then boyfriend and she was okay with him but it really caught my dad by surprise when my Mom spoke to us in English as opposed to my native language. I have it on my Channel and check it out.
What a cool clip, everyone has biases and they acknowledged it in a funny way, we're all brought up fighting our parents outdated social battles when the modern-day human, regardless of race, has evolved past the need for discrimination or pre-conceived stereotypes, love is love and its colorblind. The more I watch this show the more I'm impressed with its self-awareness, well-rounded moral messages and the genuine soul it has while still keeping the laughs coming along at a nice pace. Would be an amazing and timeless show for any kid to learn from.
@Jack Dorseys Mom no culture is a huge part especially for minorities because it gives a sense of home when it feels like your the only people person who is different. It reminds us that we are not alone and we have a place to connect to people like us. Also culture is a huge part of people’s identity. Sometimes I wish I knew more about my culture so I know more of who I am and where I came from. Culture can play a big part in somebody’s self esteem, just by seeing and interacting with people who are like you.
@Jack Dorseys Mom I know you’re drying to be a jackass but if you’re gonna be a jackass atleast don’t contradict what you say in the middle of your statement lmfao it’s not even offensive or edgy it just makes 0 sense
It was great growing up in the 90s without social media. We'd meet up at school and talk about the episode from a previous night. It was brillaint how everyone would share a specific part from the show that made them laugh making the whole conversation even funnier.

Everybody please watch this episode before saying it's racist. The particular episode basically says that the family's reaction to the girl having a white boyfriend is NOT ok.
If anything, its an anti-racist episode. And it's creative that this episode puts the shoe on the other foot in terms of narrative to try to drive home the point a little more gracefully.

Koreaboos obsessed with dating korean men, finding their oppa, and having mixed aesthetic kpop looking kids should realize korea is still a conservative, homogenous, and patriarchal country so many of their boyfriends parents will be racist. If you're anything other than korean, east asian, or a gorgeous white girl they will reject them because any grandkids they have won't fit the beauty standard or look too "different." In Korea kids with mixed non asian heritage that stand out in looks get bullied or face ostracism in school. Good looking white-korean kids might find a modeling sponsor but if you're part black you will face a lot more issues. The hip hop rnb rap music that spread to korea which is ironically one of the main influences of kpop music doesn't portray african americans with positive stereotypes.

Asian parents are often incredibly racist, unless Christian.
