  • In this episode of our Newbie Tank Build series, Jimmy and Mark discuss why testing your parameters consistently will help your corals thrive. Join us as we share which parameters you should pay attention to when monitoring your reef tank, why you should test at the same time, and how you'll know when to start supplementing your tank.
► PRO TIP: Test alkalinity at the same time everyday.

Okay so once you get the reading, how do you supplement anything that is wrong?

    Love the series.
I think it’s a good idea to review all the water parameter and nutrient targets. And the watchouts of being out of target range. Especially to avoid nuisance algae.

      2 times per week.
1 for the day and another for the night.

While Alkalinity isn't an element nor even one specific compound. It can be best thought of as: "waters ability to carry carbon in solution."
CO2 enters the water, it interacts with water in an odd way, which is pH dependent; and then forms either carbonic acid, carbonate, or bicarbonate.
I too failed chemistry. I got a solid D in high school, while organic chem was the only college course I failed and had to take twice. And that train wreck of a class revolved around carbon.
At first if you don't succeeded....

I dont get why we dont have test strips just for spot checks....i mean i use em in my pool and theyre relatively accurate compared to my drop tester for the pool....i trust them enough to keep the pool dialed all summer so why cant we have a cheap tester like this....i used em in FW for ages to test ammonia on new tanks....we definitely got to have made some progress in the last decade or so on this stuff

Nice video, as always, but I was expecting you to talk about phosphate level since I started my first saltwater tank a month ago I’ve been struggling to keep my phosphate lower so I was wondering if it has something to do with my tank being so new? I also used some cycled bio media to speed the cycling in my tank, so it is cycled, and currently has fish on it

What is lower? what is the number? And its not black and white. 100 ways your phosphate could be to high, like overfeeding or new tank not having bio filtration or you have like two LPS in your tank and you are feeding reef roids haha!
