    I really like how in Skyrim we only get the Nords PoV of the Mede Empire, basically giving us the idea that it is extremely weak and the Emperor is nothing but a puppet of the Thalmor. Adds a lot of depth to this story since he's actually quite the leader.

    • @troodon1096
      @troodon1096 6 лет назад +105

      It's certainly not how the emperor and the Empire themselves see it; and it's worth pointing out that the Empire has no more love of the Thalmor than the Stormcloaks do (you can hear Tulius himself say as much), they just need to pay them lip service for the sake of convenience to keep the peace until they're ready to launch an assault against the Aldmeri Dominion, as they've been planning to do for quite some time.

    • @Altrantis
      @Altrantis 6 лет назад +55

      In Skyrim we only get the nord PoV of everything. We can't even talk with the Thalmor even if we're altmer, and we're forced to take the blade's perspective, even if we later side with Paarthurnax.

    It really isn't fair to compare the state of The Empire under The Mede Dynasty to its state under The Septim Dynasty since the Septims came to power by somebody who can change a region's biome RETROACTIVELY using a giant doomsday robot that can also warp time itself, while the Medes had to rely on political cunning and tactical genius alone in order to rise to power.

    Titus Mede the 1st is most comparable to Emperor Aurelian in the real world. His martial ability along with his understanding of both militairy tactics and shrewd undertaking of domestic policy. Just like Titus Mede the 1st, his abilities were greatly understated in history.

      Because his rule didn't include major defeats of the enemy or major accomplishments other than reuniting the empire and founding the oculatum. Since it is considered the default position of the empire to rule all of tamriel as much as the elves permit, the fact he restored it almost fully is simply seen as doing his job as emperor. And since he got his job as emperor by conquering a weak empire and simply taking the reigns of an existing horse, this is also seen as just doing his job.
      He is a lot more interesting to me after watching this video for certain.

I love Skyrim but I feel a little disappointed that it skipped 200 years of lore since the last game. A lot of interesting events had to have happened during that time, and a game that allows a player to witness some of that first hand would be great.

    You know, there's a theory that Titus Mede 2nd was the one who set out the contract on his own life. He knew that the next war would be much harder and he ,an old man, could never win. So he wanted to get a new, younger, ruler to lead the empier at war with the thalmor. This just shows how much of a badass Titus Mede 2nd is and why he's my fav.

However, if he is killed he becomes a martyr, a beacon around which the next emperor can rally his people. It actually makes a ton of sense why he'd do this. Politically it's the best case scenario.

      He knows what happened to uril septim from the assassin

    • @MrJH101
      @MrJH101 4 года назад +3

      @wishbone346 that would actually make the Empire look even weaker if anything. Why? Because you decided to show the entire world that an assassin could kill the Emperor of Cyrodiil with impunity and then get away with it. Death by assassination is also just a TERRIBLE way to transfer over your position of power in a secure manner. It’s really not a preferable position to put the next guy in. There’s just too much room for things to go wrong after you’ve been murdered and this is when other court conspiracies will likely be acted upon during the following chaos and confusion before the heir can formally be crowned. Rival claimants to throne will realize how simple it was for someone to assassinate the emperor and they too might might grow emboldened enough to hire assassins themselves. That’s how the last emperor was dealt with, so what’s stopping them from assassinating the next one if they don’t like him? It shows that these emperors aren’t actually as untouchable as they seem.
      Whereas, if you simply wanted to stop being the emperor because you felt you were getting too old for it and just wanted to retire, you could simply abdicate the throne like a sane person would. You know, rather than come up with some narcissistic and convoluted murder plot for yourself. Instead, just formally give your full endorsement to your oncoming heir (of your choice) that you want everyone to recognize as the new emperor from now on. So now there’s less room for crazy infighting to happen afterwards and your loyal subjects will all honor your last decree. And then you can finally retire away from the political world and live out the last of your days in peace, knowing that your succession of power happened smoothly. Simply be free to live comfortably at any of your countryside mansions to eat, drink, hump and entertain yourself as you see fit for the rest of your days.

      The Altmer, Khajiit, and Wood elves don't exactly have the best track record when it comes to wars with human provinces. The Summerset Isles has been conquerored at least three different times by various emperors. While they have never been able to conqueror a human provinces. Valenwood and Elsweyr track records are even worse. They are constantly being conquered by various elven and human empires and Dominions. He also didn't defeat them, the treaty highly favored the Aldmeri Dominion, so he lost the war.
      He also let the situation in the Reach fester. The Forsworn conquest of the Reach was a direct threat to the future of the empire, but he didn't ever bother sending a small force to reclaim it. The Forsworn uprising all but cut off Highrock from the rest of the empire and created a power vacuum in Skyrim which directly lead to the Stormcloak uprising. Yet somehow he couldn't be bothered to plug said power vacuum which was a direct threat to the empires future.

The high elves have the most educated society in Tamriel, and have many many years to use that knowledge and learn more. When speaking to amaund motierre, he say he intends to replicate the death of pelagius septim. Once Pelagius was assassinated his cousin(Kintyra Septim) took the throne as pelagius had no direct heirs. There is also the fact that he gives you an elder council amulet. Meaning that he or one of the members of the elder council are the cousin of the emperor is trying to size power.

      In all likelihood even if it's not canon that the Dark Brotherhood assassinates him, he'll likely die of old age in a few years anyway. Best guess he's probably 75-80 years old as of the time of Skyrim.
      It's probably not canon that the dragonborn joins the Dark Brotherhood (in all likelihood regardless of the actions of the player, probably only the main quest is canon actions of the dragonborn; all the factional quests are probably actions of someone else). However there is certainly a plot to assassinate the emperor, and if the DB doesn't do it, someone else will. And even if they don't, he'll only live for a few more years anyway.

      He set up his own death to become a Martyr.
      When you confront him on his ship he's reading a Dark Brotherhood oriented book, he also States he knew you were coming. Also on the ship you find a "sailor" in a room with 2 dead Imperial Bodyguards.

    You cannot destroy the Dark Brotherhood in Skyrim. You only get to clear the Falkreath sanctuary, and several important members of the Dark Brotherhood aren't there. Presumably, they're in the Dawnstar sanctuary, to which you never gain access if you decide to 'destroy' the Dark Brotherhood. Cicero and the Night Mother survive, for instance.

    • @mvmsma
      @mvmsma 6 лет назад +4

      Cicero and the Night Mother can't rebuild the Dark Brotherhood alone in less than some couple of years, so the DB will be "offline" for some good time.

      @dhindaravrel8712 6 лет назад +3

      There are others who survive, too. You never get to take out that vampire girl either, for example. I haven't got a complete list but it's several members.

      Dhindara Vrel In Skyrim, the only survivors I can remember now are Cicero and Babette (I don't consider the Night Mother, considering she's a ghost). I don't remember if we get to kill Gabrielle (I don't remember how to spell that Dunmer girl's name), so, in the best of the scenarios, we have 2 members and 1 keeper alive. No listener.
      I wouldn't give them less than 10 years to get their shape back.

    • @spaceangelmewtwo9074
      @spaceangelmewtwo9074 6 лет назад +7

      Not to mention how... awful Cicero would be at recruiting. Cicero is barely tolerated by most of the existing Brotherhood. Even those who support the Night Mother find Cicero impossible to deal with, and the rest wish they could just kill him. Even if he were able to find people who could stand him, he can barely hold it together long enough to get the Night Mother to the Falkreath Sanctuary, and he doesn't hold it together long enough to do convince the other Brotherhood members to depose Astrid. He has the attention span of a squirrel, and that makes him an awful leader. Cicero would be great to have around if the player becomes Listener since he would re-enforce the 5 Tenets, but if it was just him, he would probably do awfully.

    Very nice lore video. Though one thing to note is that ES legends might not have happened. This is not to say it isn't Canon but because the campaign of the game is told through a narrator from a time after the events occurred. This brings up one of the most common writing techniques in the elder scrolls, the unreliable narrator. How can we be certain what the narrator said is truth? The entire story can be false, partially true with key events changed for the sake of the story, or it could be completely true. This is still highly debated in lore communities.

    I think the emperor is assassinated by the brotherhood no matter what. Since even when you choose to destroy them you dont actually end up killing all of them. Also this siege on their sanctuary parallels with the brotherhood questline when the listener finds many of the assassins dead but then goes on to kill the emperor anyway. These events are so similar they can easily be left vague but with a bit more detail on how he died versus the idea that the circumstances surrounding his death are unknown. I think in lore it will be: mede II was assassinated by a dark brotherhood agent sometime following the supposed destruction of their sanctuary. This also leaves the dark brotherhood a viable faction in the next game.

    • @cesardl.6093
      @cesardl.6093 6 лет назад

      The emperor is very old, it does not really matter if he is murdered or not because he most likely only lives a few more years if he is not killed. Bethesda most likely leave the facts vague about the death of the emperor in the next game (They will not confirm if he died murdered or old age) that way Bethesda would not bother those who chose any of the 2 options.

      César LZ. Thats a possibility but a boring one at that

    • @cesardl.6093
      @cesardl.6093 6 лет назад

      Look at it from Bethesda's point of view. Would you risk canonizing one of 2 endings knowing that basically with that action you would be alienating and bothering all those who did not choose that option? What is the use of giving you the option to end the brotherhood if the emperor is killed anyway? From Daggerfall Bethesda prefers not to get into trouble in that regard.

    May I ask why the southern part of morrowind is shown as part of argonia? I see this often but ive never seen a source for that, is it specificly statet in the novels? After the eruption of Red Mountain most of southern Morrowind is cut off from whatever part of northern Morrowind is still inhabitable. The Argonians took advantage of that to raid and de facto conquer most of Morrowind south of Red Mountain. The books definitely confirm this although how strongly they still control it as of the time of the Skyrim game isn't officially confirmed by canon lore as of yet. Quite likely they still do, as the Empire and norther Morrowind simply lack any resources to provide any aid to southern Morrowind and the Arogonians have historical reasons to want to continue to control that area. To insert my personal opinion, kind of serves them right for how they've historically treated the Argonians really.

    After hearing how the Emperor wanted to keep troops at the border (despite the wishes of General Tulius), that makes me wonder:
    When you ask the guy who hires you to kill the emperor why are they hiring you to do this he just says that certain people wish to see a change of policy in the empire; what if its the Thalmor who are telling this guy to hire you to kill the emperor, with the policy change being that of now moving troops away from the border (and into far away Skyrim) to make the Empire easier to invade again?
