Actually they both had minor ties to the Richardson family, who were the Kray Twins rivals in the 1960s and basically took over once Reggie and Ronnie got locked up. They were young men who used to hang around with the sons and nephews of the Richardson family, weren't actual gangsters themselves, but knew a lot of people who were "faces" in London. I know this because I used to date Charlie Richardson's nephew's daughter, and got introduced to a few of them. Pete became a teacher and Bas ran a Leisure Centre. They write all their own stuff, but get their grandkids to help them out with the slang.

They just find it funny how English it sounds. They don't have any idea how good their bars actually are. You need to have a pretty good knowledge of English current and old man slang, and many of the references are old man and England specific. Me being a bit older but also knowing the current urban slang means that I catch it all, and my favourite bars and themes are completely missed by most reactors.
