  • Opening Comments from the "The UN Biodiversity Conference (COP 16): What’s on the Table, What to Expect" Online media briefing, Wednesday 21 September, 16:00 US EDT
On Wed. 21 Aug., at the end of multi-day talks in Montreal, CBD Executive Secretary Astrid Schomaker, Colombian Environment Minister Susana Muhamad, and Canadian Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault will conduct an interactive media briefing on their vision for CBD's COP16 (Cali, Colombia, 21 Oct.-1 Nov.), its goals and agenda: what’s on the table, what's at stake, what to expect.
In Cali, Parties to the CBD will take stock of progress towards the goals and 23 ambitious targets for 2030 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework agreement adopted in December, 2022. Resource mobilisation and technical and scientific cooperation will be central to the negotiations. Financial ambitions set out in the KMGBF include investing US$ 200 billion a year from all sources, and reforming US$ 500 billion in government subsidies that undermine biodiversity.
