Seriously, as a little kid watching early 1980s MTV music videos, I still recall bands like America having their time on there. These guys were average looking people. Music used to be where some guy could literally have just gotten off work, then show up at a studio or some place to do a concert with whatever they were wearing all day. But this quickly changed as appearance became everything as the 1980s progressed, and it's been that way ever since. You can't be looking like Average Joe / Jane anymore. Image became everything, even if it was a lie.
lol... Don't have to imagine... I can still remember. You'd be SURPRISED!🤣😉 Edit: Had to look first, it's on here though. Search "Lil Brother Trucker" and it'll give you an idea of the scope of available variety when you still had to buy physical media.
There's objectively more music in existence since the internet originated... There's a different essence to a lot of music pre-internet but the internet itself has provided exponentially more people the ability and opportunity to create and share music, even without ever having owned or even learned an instrument.
Such a cute song. I was so little thsoe years. My fam would listen to this song. My neighbors husband told me he met his wife in those dating ads on the newspaper. They been together 45 years. Really really nice
Reminds me of my dad, that was his bar back in the 80's and he came downstairs, months before he died unexpectedly and was playing this song for all of us on his phone and explain3d the story, although I already knew but just listening ro him and seeing his big, beautiful snile and watching those Irish Eyes light up. I miss you dad, and your grandchildren do too. We play this song and talk about you. Thanks Rupert for a great song & great memories...
my much older sister gave me this cassette for my 10th bday in 1980. had no idea what Pina coladas, making love on the dunes at the cape or escaping were. l do now lol and I love this song even more at 54.
He wrote a song about being naughty without being naughty & the fact he met his very same lady in the song tells me this guy had the writing skills of such a romantic soul.
They realize, they aren't tired of each other, they realize they yearn for the same change up. They are still the same perfect match as in the beginning. How is that not beautiful? (asking your wife, lol).
My 19 year old granddaughter has the uncanny knack of listening to the words of songs and remembering them. She reintroduced me to the song which I remember but only listened to the tune and not the lyrics. I was only 39 at the time but I guess I was more engrossed in establishing a business than taking the time to listen to the details.
One of those classics that many of my mates can sing the lyrics to. I love it and it explains how some of us can get lost along the way in our relationships. Sometimes all we need is a little spark to remind us how good it really is
This song came out when I was 1 year old. It is a love song of our parents' generation and a birth song of our generation. I also played this song to my child when he was born. A song that connects three generations is truly rare. Thank you, Uncle Holmes.
I had no idea he was an author until I picked up the book "Murder Your Employer" a couple weeks ago at the library. His writing is darkly comic and really good.
Check out his interview on Professor of Rock, an amazing story behind this song. The original lyric was 'Humphrey Bogart' and changed it at the last minute to Pina Coladas, just before they hit the record button. The studio track we hear is the first time he actually sang the song. Nailed it.
From not so sunny Leicester one of my favourite songs of all time all thanks to my old Scottish friend the lovely Rhona,, thanks sweet cheeks hope you happy and well XX
Really? It's about a man who attempts to cheat on his wife but accidentally finds that she is trying to cheat on him. It is at best bittersweet. It is true they find one another in the end but via a terrible route.
I’ve loved this song for 30+ years but never truly listened to all of the lyrics and caught the plot twist until literally watching this video just now!
One of the coolest songs ever. Absolutely fun , happy , love , good vibes. Thanks for giving this song yo the world and making life better for all of us. Special place in heaven for you bro.
He wrote a song called “You Got It All” and was performed by The Jets and was a top hit in 1986, that song is beautiful! He wrote it for his 10 year old daughter Wendy who had a brain tumor who later died and was never able to hear the song her Father wrote for her. It’s a very sad story.
What more is there to say? And where can it be said. Time has passed me by (a whole generation). We were doing the “shag”. And drinkin’ the stuff that glimmers under sultry skies - wait, wait - we weren’t allowed to dance at college, but we could “shag at recess “ and even the school superintendent would dance with students in the high school gym. Confusing, huh?

I always wondered what kind of future is that going to be...them both catching each other wanting to cheat...😅..."then we laughed for a moment"...ah, the sweet fantasy of music...❤❤❤

Looking like a history teacher lol
Listening for my daughter’s teacher who passed this month from cancer. Learned that she really liked Rupert Holmes at the funeral today.
I love all kinds of music, but this might objectively be the best song ever written.

@@SmoothBaracudaback in the day, good music made it. Now you hear the garbage too. That's what was meant. Any crap is music now.
I went to high school in the 80's and this guy looked like about half of all the male teachers I had back then LOL
Well, this band was a one-hit wonder. Rupert might have been your teacher at some point.
A famous man from Albuquerque
Only BCS fans will understand. Hahahaha 😂

isn't Rupert Holmes English?
No, Google says Rupert Holmes is British.

How could such ridiculous lyrics turn into such a classic? Mr. Holmes, please continue your ways.

Getting Down
LYRICS:
I was tired of my lady
We'd been together too long
Like a worn out recording
Of a favorite song
So while she lay there sleepin'
I read the paper in bed
And in the personal columns
There was this letter I read
If you like piña coladas
And gettin' caught in the rain
If you're not into yoga
If you have half a brain
If you like makin' love at midnight
In the dunes on the cape
Then I'm the love that you've looked for
Write to me and escape
I didn't think about my lady
I know that sounds kinda mean
But me and my old lady
Had fallen into the same old dull routine
So I wrote to the paper
Took out a personal ad
And though I'm nobody's poet
I thought it wasn't half bad
Yes, I like piña coladas
And gettin' caught in the rain
I'm not much into health food
I am into champagne
I've got to meet you by tomorrow noon
And cut through all this red tape
At a bar called O'Malley's
Where we'll plan our escape
So I waited with high hopes
And she walked in the place
I knew her smile in an instant
I knew the curve of her face
It was my own lovely lady
And she said, "Oh, it's you"
Then we laughed for a moment
And I said, "I never knew"
"That you like piña coladas
And gettin' caught in the rain
And the feel of the ocean
And the taste of champagne
If you like making love at midnight
In the dunes on the cape
You're the lady I've looked for
Come with me and escape"
If you like piña coladas
And gettin' caught in the rain
If you're not into yoga
If you have half a brain
If you like making love at midnight
In the dunes on the cape
I'm the love that you've looked for
Write to me and escape
Yes, I like piña coladas
And gettin' caught in the rain
I'm not much into health food
I am into champagne
I've got to meet you by tomorrow noon
And cut through all this red tape
At a bar called O'Malley's
