- Toyota ProAce P20EE: Why 10+ Warranty Repairs Haven't Fixed It
Toyota vehicles are known for their reliability, but even the best can face challenges. One Toyota ProAce owner has been stuck in a cycle of frustration, dealing with over a dozen warranty repairs for a persistent P20EE fault. So, what’s really going on here? First this is a Citroen badged as a Toyota...Let’s break it down.
The Issue at a Glance
The main problem here revolves around the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and AdBlue system. Despite repeated visits to the dealership, each ending with a force regen (essentially a temporary fix to clear soot built up in the DPF) and a reset, the fault keeps coming back.
Within 100 miles of driving, the warning lights reappear: spanner light, AdBlue symbol, and an emissions fault notification. The owner has already seen several components replaced, including:
AdBlue tank and injector
Fuel injectors
DPF pressure sensors
NOx (nitrogen oxide) sensors
Yet, none of these fixes has resolved the underlying issue.
Diagnostics and Fault Codes
Using a Topdon Phoenix Pro diagnostic tool, the current faults were analysed. Among the error codes detected were:
P16D0: Damage to the double damping flywheel.
P20EE: Pollution in the NOx system, the key fault persisting through all previous dealership visits.
The vehicle also displayed an emissions warning: “Impossible to start in 600 miles.” This indicates the vehicle is on a countdown, limiting use until the issue is fixed. The live data provided insights into several areas of concern.
Analysing Live Data
When checking the live data, some curious findings emerged:
These irregular readings point towards two likely causes: a cracked DPF or possible sensor or system misreadings. However, the P20EE code is a clear giveaway of what’s happening.
The Root Cause: Cracked DPF
Fault code P20EE has a notorious reputation with this vehicle model. Every time it comes up, the cause is almost always the same: the DPF is cracked.
The crack means the DPF can no longer properly contain emissions. Instead of trapping soot and harmful particulates, the system is essentially “leaking,” allowing pollutants to escape unchecked. This is why no amount of force regens, sensor replacements, or resets has solved the problem-it’s a hardware issue, not just a software one.
A simple test-known as a “finger test”-clearly showed soot passing through the exhaust system. This confirmed what the diagnostics suggested: the filter isn’t doing its job.
The Only Fix
To resolve this issue, the DPF and catalyst need replacing as one complete unit. Cleaning the catalyst or injector won’t work in this situation. Even if all other components were functioning perfectly, the cracked DPF means the emissions system can’t meet standards.
Replacing the DPF isn’t a cheap fix, but it’s the only way to stop the P20EE fault for good. Without this replacement, the vehicle will keep throwing the same error, and the AdBlue system will remain ineffective.
Conclusion
The Toyota ProAce in question highlights why it’s important to accurately diagnose root causes, rather than just applying temporary fixes. After 10+ failed warranty repairs, it’s clear that no amount of resets or part replacements will solve a cracked DPF.
For anyone facing a P20EE fault, the solution is simple yet definitive: ofnsoot is visible, replace the DPF and catalyst unit. While it might feel like an expensive step, it’s the only reliable way to get the vehicle back to full working order.
Got a similar issue with your vehicle? Always push for a proper diagnosis and don’t settle for band-aid solutions, no matter how many times they’re offered.
Hi Jimmy I've had extensive experience on that system. Unfortunately work for psa. We fit loads of new dpfs on them. P20ee puts the system in default and then you get no pressure reading until fixed and reset. Love your videos very much and very helpful. Have a good weekend
Which pressure reading is unavailable in this state - the adblue?
I for one appreciate the free and interesting content. He has stated multiple times through his videos he would love to help everyone but there just isn’t enough time if that’s all he did. Seems to me he offers up the info in hopes of educating other professionals to learn more about diagnosing these systems. I feel honored that he goes to the trouble of making it informative to the DIYr. If you are asking what he thinks about deleting you don’t watch much of his videos.
So the other shops basically changed all the other parts related to emission system But not the dpf🤦🏻 Glad there still is mechanics like you! Thanks!
Great diagnostic work Jimmy and so quickly too. Seems Toyota were just replacing parts hoping they will find the fault rather than going further down that rabbit hole as to the actual fault!
Your skills with cars and van are out of this world 🌎 I love to watch them. And when anyone asks in ford Kuga sites about doing a regen I say what you say find the problem why it won't don't ever cook your dpf keep it up Jimmy 😊😊
Glad you like them!
The day Toyota put their badge on a Citroen van they were stuffed.
My milkman had one of these. It was back with the dealer a dozen times.
They’d actually run out of ideas & actually slipped it across to the neighbouring Peugeot dealer in the middle of the night to see what they thought was wrong.
It was an electronic auto. They actually told him with a straight face that the fault lay in a door handle.
He eventually gave up on them & traded it for a Merc Vito.
Hahaha... like it. The badge is about the only thing that is Toyota on these vans IMO. Dont understand why Toyota wanted to get involved with that lot.
@@tonyb3400I've a proace they're a horrible van to drive ,driving position terrible bring back the hiace best van ever built
@@ciaranboughton4713 I too have one of them Stellantis vehicles supplied by the company new in 2023. 1 of the three of these vans has already been back to the dealer on 3 separate occasions with adblue faults that started a couple of months after delivery. Its a great shame indeed that Toyota stopped importing genuine Toyota designed and built vehicles into the UK. I also had a Peugeot Rifter in 2019 that is a car version of the smaller van(Partner) sold last December after developing a wiring harness & BSI module failure after 12000 miles that cost just under £6K to have replaced. Thats the last Stellantis vehicle I will ever buy.🤯
@@tonyb3400 Show its a hypocritical carbrand, besides toyotas now are succesful; ie topselling brand in many countries; but feel lots buy toyota as a toyota card like people play a race card; ie toyota reputation; hybrid ie the buyers dont wanna EV
ive seen plenty of these in the vauxhall form at work & if it’s a 1500 we fit plenty of DPF’s under warranty but out of warranty customers don’t want to fit them 💷💷💷 😮 . Once they crack the soot just chokes the after treatment system & the NOX sensors detect this . The reaction of most places is to replace the sensors , glad to see you making the correct call 👍 .
Thanks for going to the trouble of doing a description of everything you did and said in your video , not many go to that trouble 👍
If a dealer here in Norway fail to repair something under warranty 3 times. You have right to get your money back.
Jimmy, look after yourself, there's no need to get that oily soot on your skin.
Do as much as possible to keep out of the smoke from those faulty vans.
Keep off your knees as much as possible and keep them dry.
I'm just telling you, I'm old now and paying the price.
Gloves and kneepads, and avoiding soot are key.

Doesnt look right! Dodgy sensor or dummy data?
Hi Jimmy and other with this problem, I had/have the same issue (P20EE) and adblue pump pressure of 0.5 bar. No one could provide an explanation, let alone solution. Toyota dealer said I need adblue tank, incl installation €1600.
What fixed the adblue 0.5 bar isssue: Added 250 ml ‘Wynn’s Crystal Clean & Protect’ to a full tank adblue, after driving for a while, the adblue started working normally; pressure became ~5.5 bar.
I have a partially clogged up dpf which i have to take care of.
Do you know how the dpf cracks ?
Fair play, straight forward answer to the issue.
I bought 2001 Hiace in 2010,with 110k on the clock, had it for another 100k miles. The only problem I had was a sticking caliper. Awesome vehicle. My son's 2017 Proace has suffered recalls, the ad- blue sensor is an on- going problem, the headlights play up for no reason, the bodywork isvery tinny and basically there's no comparison with my previous van. It's a Peugeot really,so Toyota have sold their souls in my opinion.
Thanks Jimmy excellent video 👌
Great job, well explained. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Unfortunately mine had the same code with the soot & this happened after I'd had the Dpf cleaned ( precautionary measure ). It was flushed the wrong way round causing it crack under pressure. The Nox sensor won't live long under these conditions. Very very sensitive vehicles IMO 😢
Main dealers are only good for basic servicing and firing the parts cannon. Any real diagnostics require an independent specialist.
Depends on the brand and the dealer. Some brands have really good diagnostic systems and procedures. Some have diabolical ones and shit training.
You sir are bang on independent expert all the time for me i found a briliant diagnostic guy and make sure I keep him happy 😊
Dealers have an incentive to sell parts, so they do.
Which is a shame because of the info like pin out data and code set criteria they have access to they should in theory be able go fix any fault first time.
@ But not the time, even in the 1980s dealers would replace parts that didn't need it.
I wonder if it was deleted at some point, then the 10 year 100k warranty reactivated when new owner took it for an official service.
I bet the book procedures don't account for tampering inside warranty mileages. Reading some of the comments here, maybe they should
4 bars a default value I believe diagnosisdan had a thing on it. 5 or more when running
It's very important that engine ecu is updated with latest version to stop this happening again.
Simple solution, remap and dpf adblue egr off, no more issues and loads better mpg 👌
Plenty of vehicles that won’t work for.
@hughmarcus1 literally none
It works for my puegot partner! 😊@@hughmarcus1
The MOT tester will see the soot and fail it.
Adblue alone can be deleted ok, if not driven often in town it's not needed anyway.
@@G-ra-ha-m not if remapped properly and you keep the cat, zero smoke on any I've done 👍
jimmy nice peace of work👌
I need to get a small van, really unsure what to get, I liked the look of the 2020 era Berlingo, Cityace, Partner, combo, but they are all basically the same, maybe a 2021 new model VW Caddy 2.0 TDI would be a better gamble?
Flywheel damping fault can happen if you stall the vehicle
I once broke won on a Peugeot slamming on the brakes without pushing the clutch
How do the dpf ‘crack’ ?
Wonder if the dealership will take responsibility for the replacement - they are the ones forcing regens.
Yea no chance
@@DRAINTVofficial Sad reality.
It's under warranty
All the forced regens cracked the DPF?
It's a Citroen/Peugeot.....Toyota clearly see all the emissions control devices are disastrous on diesels if you don't do the required type of driving....for that they make outstanding petrol hybrids...
I'm sorry I sold my 20808 Dispatch for a 2016 Vito, Adblue had problems for years, but No doubt Jimmy would nail it 🙂
These will mostly passive regen once up to temp. If it can't, the car will tell you it requires a motorway run
The sad thing is people are buying thes thinking they are buying a Toyota not PSA junk. Remember the Hi-Ace what a van.
Totally agree, commented an hour ago after seeing this.
Much the same with many marques. There was a time, long, long ago when the "euro" car was suggested. That is, the best components from each marque. My Ford Tourneo has a PUG lump under the bonnet (Fantastic, I had a PUG many years ago, rock solid engine), as does a few Toyotas, but sadly, neither Toyota nor PUG software will sort out the fault codes on my Ford ('sadly' because I have access to both but I will need to buy Ford software).
Psa made some of the best engines ever made.
Truth be told you wouldn’t spend 5 mins in an old hiace now for work psa make some of the best reliable diesel engines on the market and easy to work on
Pre emission vehicles are with the weight in silver.
I don't send my cars and vans in for repair, they never fix them properly, im sick of them to be honest. I do all my own work now, I can only rely on myself
Who's the new lad is he any good😂
Jimmy posted a video a few days ago, he's going to be doing off vehicle dpf cleaning as well as his current on vehicle cleaning
That would be myself 😊

No we it was busy on another car
I had a brand new 17 plate Pro ace, you'd be driving down the road and the engine would just stop this went in to the dealers in Loughborough on four different occasions to get the problem sorted each time they'd say there was nothing wrong with it. They were a joke they couldn't diagnose whether it wanted a 💩 or a shave! It's the worst van I've ever had and would never buy toyota again Got! Got rid and got a Renault Trafic 100 times better!
Why not just DPF and Ad Blue delete? That shite is always going to be causing expensive problems.

Dear Jimmy, this is the fourth time that I have contacted you with no reply at any time. I like your vids but as a subscriber you are not listening or are ignoring me, so I will ask my question again for the last time. What is your opinion of the Vivaro as a van and what is your opinion of dpf delete? If I fail to get a response then I will unsubcribe, thanks, Paul.
He gets hundreds of messages a day mate. He can't reply to them all he'd be there all week.

@torchyboyz no but I'm talking to you. I was letting you know he gets hundreds of messages a day and phone calls. He said in previous videos he can't reply to everyone. There's no need to spit your dummy out because he doesn't reply.
@torchyboyz and you wonder why your not getting a reply, smart arse
Being a subscriber doesn’t get you magic communication powers with Jimmy. He’s a busy man. I think if you look at enough of his videos you will get a pretty clear impression of what can go wrong on a Vivaro, or on any vehicle with a DPF and/or an AdBlue system. All the best.
