From 1988 to 1992, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line built some of the most iconic cruise ships in their fleet; including the Sovereign of the Seas (later, "Soverign" by Pullmantur), the Monarch of the Seas (later, "Monarch" also by Pullmantur), and the Majesty of the Seas (which, including the Empress of the Seas - formerly the Nordic Prince - on December 16, 2020 has been sold to an undisclosed buyer in the Asia Pacific region). They were the start that solidified the brand's image as we know it today. Two out of three of them are in the middle of being scrapped in Aliaga, Turkey as we speak.
This video shares the story of these ships from beginning to end; how they made a cultural impact and innovated the Royal Caribbean brand as well as cruise design forever.
Have you sailed aboard any of these ships?
Did you have a good time?
Are you sad to see them go?
Do you have any fond memories you'd like to share?
Do you think it's unfair that their lives were cut short and that their time was up just a little too soon?
Let me know in the comments below.

I worked on the Sovereign late 80,early 90. She was a great ship. Fond memories, the crew really knew how to party. I miss those days.

Excellent video, Matthew. I worked on all 3 of these ships, as a musician. Plus the Song of America and the Legend of the Seas. I was on the maiden voyages of Majesty and Legend. This sure brought back a lot of memories!🤘🏼😎

My wife and I traveled on the Sovereign of the Seas during her Easter 1996 cruise. We were newlyweds. We absolutely loved her. Our honeymoon ship was the Carnival Ecstasy. Ecstasy was glitzy and Sovereign a classic look. It was sad to see her being torn apart.

Sovereign of the Seas was my first cruise back in the late 90s. I also cruise the Monarch and Majesty. That is a wonderful class of ship. The Sovereign and Monarch will be missed.

Good Video!!! My first Cruise was on the Monarch of the Seas, left from L.A. in 2004. I got so hooked, that then took Freedom of the Seas, then the Navagator of the Seas, in order, celebrity century, Ruby princess, zuiderdam, Oosterdam, celebrity Constellation, again the Century, new Ámsterdam, Allure of the Seas, norwegian Getaway, Disney Fantasy,Carnival Destiny, Niew Ámsterdam for 2 rounds, east and west caribbean. Celebrity Silhouette (New Jersy) Carnival paradise (Tampa), Carnival Dream( New Orleans), MSC Divina, Anthem of the Seas(New Jersey), Royal Princess, Celebrity Reflexion, and my last, 2021, Carnival Horizon. I'm missing the Epic and Valor

Myself and wife went on Sovereign of the seas back in 1990 when she was relatively new. We were WOWED by everything she had to offer. It was our first cruise and we stepped onto Sovereign the first thing that came to my mind was WOW how the hell is this thing floating its huge! The Centrum was magnificant for the time I have some great VHS footage ha ha! In fact myself and wife were in our mid twenties and I think we were the youngest people at our dining table ha ha! Excellent insigt and documentary to Royal Carribean. Yes these ships will be missed because of memories BUT remember its all about "money" and how to make it! Really enjoyed the video it was put together very well thanks for the memories

We went on the Monarch of the Seas just before it was sold to Pullmantur. The rooms were so small, even in comparison to other ships built at the same time. I loved the ship! The atrium is still one of my favorites of all cruises. Great job on this!

Loved your video. I was so sad to see these ships going to the scrapyard. I loved the Monarch. When it was based in San Pedro, I had the pleasure of cruising on her 17 times (yes, I was obsessed). It wasn’t all about the ship. I had made friends with many crew members. Going on the ship was like a second home. I was so sad when Royal Caribbean moved her to Florida then sold her. I did get to cruise a few times on Majesty which felt a lot like being on Monarch. Previous to that, I had cruised on the Carnival Imagination. I really prefer those “smaller” ships. It feels like we’re losing a lot of our cruising history. Thanks so much for your video!

Sovereign of the Seas was the ship I went on my very first cruise (Halloween week of 1993). The iconic wrap around Viking Crown Lounge and Centrum took my breath away! To me, RCCL's most beautiful and iconic ships are Sovereign, Monarch and Majesty.

I would definitely love an 1980's themed cruise!! We cruised on Majesty in 2003 for our honeymoon. We'd planned an anniversary cruise on her in 2023. We are so sad to see her go. Nothing wrong with a small room. It is great for couples and older folks. The idea is to not be in the room all the time anyway. Even in 2003 we were overwhelmed with things to do.

Probably the prettiest of the cruise ships, classic ocean liner lines. I’ve always appreciated that RCL has stuck to some form of the cruiser stern.

I sailed on Sovereign July 1988. She was a brand new ship and was very impressive. Wasn't afraid to look like a ship (unlike the modern cargo shape blocks coming down the always today). Sad to see her go to the scrapper but the life of a cruise ship is short.

I sailed on Sovereign of the Seas. One odd feature was the cabins on on deck had windows facing the promenade. Some people seemed to be unaware of this and would forget to close their blinds. I went on it in 2002 when it was already vintage. Very sad to see it go and so many others which are lost due to the pandemic disaster. Also I went on a fantasy class and its sad also to see those being scrapped as well. Normally you would think there would be repurposing of these ships for cheaper lines but it seems the lines are in a big hurry to get rid of them rather than to wait to find a buyer other than a scrapper.

The Soverign had no Promenade!!! It's only an Atrium and no rooms face there, is only shops and elevators. What are you talking about?? The first boat with rooms facing promenade was the Oasis class

My very first cruise was on Sovereign in the late '90s. She impressed from the exterior, and I feel that her unique look never got old. The interior when I sailed on her was very dated, very 1980s in appearance, and her cabins were functional but oh so tiny. Still, I loved the Centrum, which was simply beautiful, and everthing else about that first journey. In the years that followed I sailed on Majesty several times and she did not feel quite so dated on the inside. Everything comes to an end at some point, but it was a shame to see these lovely ladies scrapped.

Great memories. My first was the Majesty. Then the Monarch and the last was the Sovereign. They where very similar in the exterior and a few inside locations (except furniture, colors and names) Out of all the cruises, these stole my heart. I’m not a fan of the massive ships today. And yes the weird thing between deck 5 and 6. Like who came up with that? But I loved them. I still think cruise ships are ugly. Nothing like the great liners of the past.

See the previous build they did since sovereign of the seize was song of America and that had a lot of vibrations when they ship was leaving Port docking And that's because song of America's engines were hard mounted to the deck solvern of the seas were actually mounted with rubber bushings which allow the engine to vibrate on the bushings and not vibrate the ship

If the general public had the same interest in cruise ships as they did with ocean liners in the 1960's, would Sovereign of the Seas, Monarch of the Seas, Carnival Fantasy, Karnika, Satoshi, Costa Victoria, Marco Polo, Astor, and Tropicale have been preserved as hotel and museum ships.

    • @ManWhoLovesTheMary
      @ManWhoLovesTheMary  3 года назад

I definitely think more ships would be saved if the major population was more interested in ocean liners and cruise ships. There still would be some scrapped though, I'm sure. I feel like the more popular ones would be saved. Like ONE or THREE Fantasy Class ships. I don't know about the Costa Victoria, but I'm sure the Marco Polo and Astor would be given a home somewhere. There may even be bids from port cities who would love to host them.

    • @donaldturner2145

@@ManWhoLovesTheMary Would Regal Princess and Crown Princess have also been preserved since they were designed by Renzo Piano, who designed the Pompidou Center and The Shard. Also, Carnival Fantasy herself would likely have been the one most likely preserved out of the three Fantasy class ships.

That was the decor of the Carnival ships, until the Carnival Breeze. I forgot the name of the guy in charged of them, all were crazy like that, he also did the costa ones. He was famous for it, but overtime it got dated, cheese and tacky. It was las Vegas 90s inspired. A lot of neon, a lot of shine and crazy rooms.
