    This is the whole story. Like virtually 99.9% of all brands, Egnater does NOT make their own transformers. The transformers for many years were built by a company called Federal which were reliable. Federal changed ownership (without notice to Egnater) and the genius new owners decided to save a few pennies by changing Bruce's transformer specs by adding a thermal fuse which was mis-rated. This fuse was not the resettable type, meaning once the fuse blew, the whole transformer would need replacement.
    So even though the amps passed inspection and burn in, over time the fuse would give out on this large batch of amps. The result to the world appears like bad quality on Egnater's part. The truth is Federal messed up big time.
    Here are the steps Egnater took:
    1) all transformers which had this issue were replaced at no charge.
    2) stopped using Federal
    3) switched all transformers to CMEC at a substantially higher cost
    4) implemented a very stringent test procedure

    Nice to see the Tweaker getting some love on here, I've owned one for a few years and I dig it, great value amp.

    • @johncandlish
      @johncandlish 8 лет назад +8

      I concur. I've played a Tweaker for several years now. It's a great amp.
      Also would like to mention that the Tweaker 1x12 cab has a lo-watt Celestion g12h-30 which is very well matched to a 6v6 power section, which is kind of confusing since Egnater's website says the speaker is a 'Custom Voiced Egnater Elite GH-50 by Celestion®', although they show a picture of the g12h-30?

    • @cr8zyshredda007
      @cr8zyshredda007 8 лет назад

      I've heard some owners have had problems with the transformer in the amp. Do you know if they fixed this with the newer models?

    • @c00lkatz
      @c00lkatz 8 лет назад +1

      +john candlish they're not G12H-30 anymore...used to be back in the day in the 1x12 with GH50 in the 2x12...now both come with that GH50. I hate that speaker...trebly mess. I had a real G12H-30 in a custom 1x12 and a Tweaker 112x with the GH50 and they don't sound alike.

    • @johncandlish
      @johncandlish 8 лет назад +2

      +c00lkatz -- Anderton's must still have the old stock 112 cabs cause their website claims: "Celestion G12H-30 Loaded".
      If the 112 cabinet really is stocked with two different speakers that is something to clarify before buying!

    • @c00lkatz
      @c00lkatz 8 лет назад +1

      +john candlish yeah I researched that cab before buying and even Egnaters site said it came with the G12H when it hasn't for quite some time now. I'd venture to guess the product descriptions are outdated. If you get one new with a G12H then it's been sitting in a warehouse for a long while. The change was made a couple years ago from what I could decipher.

    I picked up a floor model of the Tweaker 15 (combo), for $220 (about £160). It is the best purchase Ive made aside from my les paul. The only thing that may replace it is a supro dualtone or comet (someday when I have much more cash).
    I swapped out the tubes, its cathode biased so those power tubes popped right in, and it is just a great amplifier. Im happy see Chappers have the same response to it that I did.

    Nice review. The Tweaker is a killer amp, used them live and in the studio since 2011. The one thing this review doesn't cover at all is the sweet spot on the master volume (on the 15w at least). At about 1 o'clock the amp goes from "cool" to "wow"! Of course, it's pretty loud by then!

    I've owned the 15w tweaker head and cab for a few months now, and I'm so damn happy with it. Sounds fantastic. It's really really good for recording. If you're after hi-gain tones, you're really going to need an overdrive pedal of some sort, as even on full gain on the hot channel, it's not a huge amount of gain (with passive pickups anyway). For clean and slightly overdriven/crunchy tones it's faaaaantastic. couldn't recommend it more. But just make sure you get a reverb pedal with it.

    These sound insanely good. That said, as guitarists, we're bat shit crazy. Think about this. We try to describe sounds with odd phrases like, "It sounds woody". What? How's that? Woody? "It sounds warm!" Heat makes sound? "It has a saggy sound." Uh...I'm trying to imagine things sagging...and making sounds. Perhaps it's the same sounds we all make as we get old? Bat shit crazy, I say. We are. Particularly Rob and the Captain. Bat shit crazy for certain. Beyond certifiable.

    I've owned the 15 watt head for a few years now. My impression is that it does not exactly imitate any amp, but it does give good approximations of those amps. The USA setting is "Fender-y", the Brit is "Marshall-y" and the AC is "Vox-y". I'd say the USA setting is the one that best approximates its target sound. With the power amp on vintage, USA sounds more tweed-ish and modern sounds more in the black/silverface range. The Brit setting is a decent approximation in the preamp section. I'd say that the AC is probably the furthest away from the intended sound, it doesn't quite chime the same way. Probably due to the 6V6 power tubes vs. the el84. It's a great little amp. As some one whose main amp is none of those 3, but wanted to have those sounds on hand, this really fit the bill. Much easier on the wallet than buying 3 amps, and also takes up much less space.

    • @morganghetti
      @morganghetti 8 лет назад +1

      I agree about the us setting. The Marshall setting is equally lovely. I read an article with Bruce Egnater where he claims the tone stack is the vast majority of the signature sounds of various amps and the type of power section wasnt as important as people think. Not sure how true that is.

    • @gmlasam
      @gmlasam 8 лет назад

      You pretty much described the Tweaker accurately. This amp is by no means a "MODELING" amp, but gives you an approximate base tone of the three popular tones, Marshall (Brit), Vox (AC) and Fender (USA). You can fine tune your tone by tweaking the several switches and dialing the tone controls. The Tweaker is also very pedal friendly to get more added tone variations. Its a great versatile amp, you can say this amp is like a Swiss Army Knife that has many uses.

    • @morganghetti
      @morganghetti 8 лет назад +1

      Very true. It will get you almost anywhere tone wise you want to go. And although the sections may be approximations, they are great. It's blackface setting doesn't sound exactly like a DRRI, but it sounds fantastic. If you want a DRRI buy a DR. This is all despite it being so affordable. Couldn't agree with you more.

    • @Justin.Franks
      @Justin.Franks 8 лет назад

      +morgan ghetti The Tweaker actually has three separate tone stacks, using the typical layout and component values of Fender, Vox, and Marshall amps, and that is what you are selecting with the USA/AC/Brit switch.

    I love my Egnater Tweaker 15 watt, but I'm running 2- EL34's and it sounds great. Pushes a 4x12 Marshall cab pretty loud. What's cool is these amps can take all of these tube pairs with no changes! :
    EL34, 6L6, 6L6G, 6L6GC, 6V6 and I've tried them all. 6L6 metal case tubes, the first btw, sound really sweet with a little less output. The 6L6G are the 'Coke bottle' glass tube ( the first glass 6L6) and they have a nice sound. Mine I borrowed from my Wurlitzer 310 Vibrato cabinet I that goes with my Wurlitzer 1946 Series 31 Electrostatic Reed organ. These were the original tubes, still test good! The 6L6GC have great sound in the Tweaker! Nice bite and full clean tone. The 6V6 have a nice blues tone with less output. My favorite are the EL34 tubes. With the Tweaker on British and with minimal effects except reverb in the FX loop, and a Joyo American pedal ( a must for this amp! imho) it rocks out!
    DONNER LAX COMP deep dive!
    Donner LAX COMP is their version of the classic Universal Audio 1176 pedal. A very handsome pedal actually, it even has 76 in the logo if you look close. Foolish of Donner not to mention it anywhere in their ad campaign, so I've been mentioning it around. Now one quality of a compressor is its breathing character, but often we don't want this. The Donner is rock stable. It is designed around the LM3080 OTA ( Operational Transconductance Amplifier , see an excellent article on the CA3080 OTA in Internet Archives- Radio Electronics magazine May 1988 pages 63-68. I happened to recall seeing it a couple years ago when looking through 4-5 issues of the magazine I'd kept from my early 20's). Also in the circuit are 3 transistors and approx 50 surface mount resistors and capacitors. As I mentioned it is a very stable, but very warm pedal as well. I like that the Limit control raises the clean headroom. The Bright switch operates to preserve clariy. I got my LAX COMP brand new from Donner's Ebay store {for 35 US}. I'm going to get another one for my recording setup. For a good example of a recording with what appears to be 1176 on every track, is Lynyrd Skynyrd Sweet Home Alabama.
    A new pedal I highly recommend is the DONNER LAX COMP compressor. JUST GET ONE! It is...well let me give you my review of it. BTW Ebay has is direct from Donner for like $30! Put it first in the chain and the Joyo American last in the chain ( not in effects loop, but amp input) and your 2-transistor fuzz pedals work amazingly well in between the LAX COMP and the JOYO AMERICAN. I also use a DONNER RIPPLE and the COLOR knob gives the same sound as if you use a treble booster. You can turn down the tremolo if you desire, but the Color knob still works.

    Bit of a strange video suggestion here. High end reverb pedal vs low end reverb pedal. Super interested in hearing what the noticeable differences are. Same goes for delay too.

    I just picked up a used Egnater Rebel 30 Mk II for $600CAN. Not as many options as the Tweaker, but omg the tone! It does great cleans AND everything from classic dirt to modern high gain. ...and LOUD! My Marshall 2x12 cab may be getting more use as an amp stand than part of the signal chain. Lol

      Nice score. Asking price for mine was $600. Because the seller was not interested in trades, I got corn holed at the pawn shop to raise the money, but at least to got what I wanted. Most of the gear I sold wasn't getting used or sounded similar to stuff I liked better. The few things I didn't really want to sell are easy enough to find anyway.

    I've had a Tweaker 88 for about 4 years now. One of the best amps I've ever heard. BUT.......the first one I received was dead on arrival with a power tube that was dislodged. Imagine my surprise! So it was sent back for another one. The second one I received worked for about 3 months then started cutting in and out. I sent that one back to Egnater and they had it for 4 MONTHS before they decided to send it back.
    That fix worked for about 6 months then the amp started blowing fuses. It would blow them almost as soon as I put the new one in and turned it on. At that point I decided to get a local reputable amp repairman to fix it rather than drive 70 miles to drop it off so it could be sent to California and kept another 4 months. Happy to say the power tube socket wires needed switched and I've had the pleasure of one of best mid gain amps money can buy. Perfect for blues. Not a stitch of problems in 2 years. I almost gave up though.

    hey... can you guys make a video on the best 3/4 sized electrics. 22.2 scale guitars, i do play a 25.5 scale Ibanez RG421EX which i actually ordered from your store 2 days ago and its awesome, but... i mean some of us have very small hands, not that it stops us from being able to play guitar good, but just getting some of those stretches are very difficult. like from 3rd fret to the 7th, also when playing while standing its hard, sure i can raise the strap height... but come on... i wanna look cool too without making it completely difficult to play songs, i feel that us small handed guitarists are a little bit forgotten... and outcasted, and i hate when people think of anything below 24.75 as a kids guitar, and put a specific age group to it, like you have to be 9-12 years old to play it... its nothing to do with age. we all come in different shapes and sizes too, and we need to find the guitar that fits our size the best too. :D... plus i think it will make a quiet interesting video

    • @MRxr400
      @MRxr400 8 лет назад +3

      Hey Nathaniel, I've large hands, long fingers, yet still find a low hung guitar gives my wrist a lot of pain and restricts me on reaching across lots of frets. Don't go down the looking cool thing, it'll likely detract from your playing and cause damage to your wrist. Keep thumb on back of neck as much as possible to freely move around your guitar. look for ways to play without having to move up and down the neck all the time. When you gig, anything that will help you get to the end of the night is more important than looking cool and sounding bad. Sorry for the Old man theory/opinion

    • @NathanielBTM
      @NathanielBTM 8 лет назад

      Scott Mac yeah, i know that having a guitar low hung extremely restricts your playing ability and can over long periods of time injure your wrist, there are still a few ways around this, to an extent, to make the playing a little easier, like during solo's or just technical playing in general, resting the guitar on the leg and bringing the neck up much more vertically and closer to your face, makes the higher frets much more accessible. i know that looking cool isn't a priority, and isn't needed, but we all want to be looked at a certain way and we are all judged on appearance, not saying we should listen to those people, but i personally when looking in the mirror, prefer the low hung look, and im sure most others do and want to go that route, i just like my guitar around my pelvis area, or slightly higher depending on how technical the stuff i am playing is. i still go for a little comfort with the strap height, but all i'm saying is a shorter scale length,like 22.2 or maybe even slightly longer but not in the 24 scale would make it much more easier to have those higher frets much more accessible for players with small fingers, still wanting to have the "cool" factor in there lol.

    • @PeterDad60
      @PeterDad60 7 лет назад

      I for one always hang the guitar as high as I can and still climb through the guitar strap to start playing. I don't know where you get the idea most people want the guitar hung as low as possible to look cool. Maybe it's your youth and little life experience showing through.

    • @NathanielBTM
      @NathanielBTM 7 лет назад

      I mean... you could say that to slash but he'd probably just ignore you :P. I'm not saying its bad if you do have your guitar up high on your body, its comfortable, but on stage some people like to look a certain way maybe not you, but some of us do. think of it as how a lot of people into rap and shiz like to sag their pants, its not entirely comfortable, and isn't necessary having to pull your pants up every second, but they like the look. same thing for guitar, yeah if i really needed to i would play with my 25.5 guitar higher up on my body, if it was my last resort... Suffocation, No breathing Don't give a fuck if I cut my arm, bleeding... but if there are good guitars out there with short scale lengths, why not? it'll help out a lot, make us happy, and I wouldn't be hurting anyone because of it.

    • @MB-yw3pv
      @MB-yw3pv 7 лет назад +2

      I dont think they will do it but there are other guitars that have smaller fretboards, not scale wise but just physically smaller, i dont have big hands either but i play guitars that are comfotable for my hands and most of them are ESP/LTD, but for example music man/ sterling by music man/ ernie ball have smaller fretboards, I had the same exact problem with wanting to have the guitar lower then i do now but it was too hard to play and you will end up injuring yourself which you dont want to do, the kind of fans that will actually care about that are the same fans who probly wont pay close attention to the actual music, another thing to try is wearing the guitar lower but have the neck up at more of a higher angle to improve comfort-ability but your probly gonna need a strap lock so the strap dont come off, playing a shorter scale guitar will be different when you tune it and you wont be able to play as high of notes as you would with a normal scale length, you will 100% want locking tuners and thicker strings to keep the tension up, the best short scale guitar i've seen and played is a Grass Roots by ESP Mini Les Paul, i basically got super lucky and stole the only 1 from guitar center's website for $100 US, the cheapest i found another 1 was $833 on E-Bay so that felt good getting some revenge on GC for all the ripping off they do to people, but if you play an Ibanez then going to something like a ESP/LTD M series(super strat body type) wont be much different but the necks are very comfortable for me to play, also try to avoid bound fretboards because even though its not a ton wider it will still make a difference and give you that extra mm or 2 smaller neck, just go to a guitar shop and hold a bunch of different necks and ask them what guitars have smaller necks and try some out, if you can try to use the same amp you use at home so you will know what it will sound like when you go home, people make the mistake of using a expensive amp in a store that is totally different to their home amp and sounds good then when they get home to their amp it dont sound the same

    I quite fancy buying a Tweeker 40 but there are many horror stories on the net from the past about the transformers blowing. Can Anderton's confirm that this issue has been sorted on the current units?

    • @jonnelson5881
      @jonnelson5881 7 лет назад +11

      This is from another comment above that I found very helpful:
      This is the whole story. Like virtually 99.9% of all brands, Egnater
      does NOT make their own transformers. The transformers for many years
      were built by a company called Federal which were reliable. Federal
      changed ownership (without notice to Egnater) and the genius new owners
      decided to save a few pennies by changing Bruce's transformer specs by
      adding a thermal fuse which was mis-rated. This fuse was not the
      resettable type, meaning once the fuse blew, the whole transformer would
      need replacement.
      So even though the amps passed inspection and burn in, over time the
      fuse would give out on this large batch of amps. The result to the
      world appears like bad quality on Egnater's part. The truth is Federal
      messed up big time.
      Here are the steps Egnater took:
      1) all transformers which had this issue were replaced at no charge.
      2) stopped using Federal
      3) switched all transformers to CMEC at a substantially higher cost
      4) implemented a very stringent test procedure

    My Egnater Tweaker 40 is the most "musical" sounding amp I own. Very transparent with the guitar. It does a great "slight crunch" tone, between clean and overdrive - that zone where if you play gentle the notes are clean, but if you dig in a little the notes break up just perfectly. Note- use a Maxon or Tube Screamer overdrive pedal in front for adding your lead tone. Either of these pedals is going to be a great match for the amp. It's probably suited best for rock to hard rock, but perhaps not so much for straight up metal. However, some players do use these for metal, so, yeah, maybe spend time on one to see if it's going to work for your style. (Edit on 1-17-17: I forgot to mention that I, like many other Tweaker owners, have replaced the original power transformer with a Mercury Magnetics transformer. Made a pretty significant difference in my tone. Made me love the amp even more! I'd like to replace the other transformer too in the future, but I'm currently cheating on my Egnater, playing my Marshall DSL-100. I enjoy it too (for heavier rock to metal). (Edit on 11-6-23: Now, even the new Mercury Magnetics transformer has blown. I suspect it has something to do with the Egnater thermistor also needing to be replaced. But don't know for sure.)

    I owned a Tweeker 40 Combo for about a year. It is loads of fun, I just play for fun but I love to get as close as I can to the original song I'm playing to, like if I'm playing Muse I'll go british, if I'm playing Incubus I'd go American, or some Kings of Leon - AC. The electrics kind of failed me a couple of times, so I ended up Buying a Princeton and a Marshall Vintage Modern. It's a sweet amp and I kinda regret selling it! Preamp tubes also make a great difference in tone with these amps. Lots of options to taylor your tone. And they take pedals beautifully. Amazing amplifiers.
