What a classy farewell speech by Paul Maurice, and he said it better than anybody
could, that he took the team as far as his energy and talent could. I believe he gave
a 100 % commitment, but fell short of winning the big prize. Who knows ? after he
takes a mental break, he'll resurface again like Sutter, and Boudreau and Torts did.

Honestly I think it's as he said; a combination of fatigue related to the pandemic, especially the lack of fans in lockdowns, and then furthermore, a hyper self-aware decision based on the performance metrics of his team. He indicated they aren't exactly where he and management wanted the team to be going into 2022 and he is preempting a divorce by taking the initiative and thus responsibility. The latter part of this decision indicates a deep respect of management and a very good relationship that he didn't want to jeopardize in any fashion. That's what I was able to decipher from his statements, but no one know for sure except Maurice.

Nothing has changed except my respect for the whole organization has gone up. If the Oilers are going to lose to someone and they go on to win the Cup, I would hope it was Winnipeg. How classy was that! I told my wife 2 days ago that Paul would be gone, he just looked exhausted and at the end of his resources during the Buffalo loss. I'm glad he left on his own terms. Good luck on your future endeavors Paul. You're a credit to your profession and an honorable man.

Good on you PM. That kind of thinking brought Bruce Boudreau to Vancouver and it's working out. No big changes in players but Bruce is teaching them how to use what they have. I'm impressed.

Gonna miss reading his lips when a questionable penalty gets called on the Jets. Props to him for what he's done.

The challenges of winning a cup are tremendous...there are so many good teams and the odds are you only have a 1 in 32 chance every year to hoist lord stanley. The 2 star teams vs. 5 star teams diminish those odds and certainly not the coaches fault for working with what exists. I thought he did well when he was with Leafs and also with the Jets, just making it to the playoffs is a feat in itself. Glad he took the road less travelled, but hopefully he can return again somewhere later.

Wow! Edmonton fan here. I like Tipps but sometimes you sense that team needs some kind of a classy guy like Paul! A true gentleman performance, nice emotional speech! Hope he and the team will be great! And also that his voice will be new for some team as soon as it can be!

What a Beauty! His job is to do what's best for the team. His job is to get his team into the best position to win, and to realize that you have to step aside in order to achieve that but even more importantly to actually do it. That's a Coach. What a Beauty!

Canes fan here. Always been a Paul Maurice fan, since he took us to the Finals in 2002 and even his less-successful second stint. Class guy.
