as someone who spent hours just looking at planets and its life even if it gets repetitive since its not nearly as fleshed out as all the other things you can explore i can really see all the work put in here, very impressive what you were able to make up about everything here
Rare youtube reccomendations W. This is so cool! Nature documentaries in games have always caught my attention, and one done in No Man's Sky,its Just so right! Endless speculative biology fun,i love it!
thats.... i dont think sails work like thay sails help regulate body heat in very hot tempreatures because of their large surface area. a lot of surface area is like, the last thing you'd want in a cold environment
Great comment! We asked our biology expert on these animals for more info. “For most creatures with sails that’s absolutely true, the Ruby-Spined Cow however is unique for this aspect! Its spine contains an organ that allows for the collection and release of their body heat. It’s not an organ that earth creatures have, so I can understand the confusion. “ -Karlaq Murke (Gek Biologist, Life in Euclid Narrator)
Before I say anything, I just want to clarify this first: I have no degree in biology or related science, I'm just a casual speculative biology enthusiast and enjoyer, everything I'm about to say is in my relatively limited knowledge of these fields. I'm not professional, I'm far from it. On the other hand, I'm a No Man's Sky fan and I have at least 1000 hours on the Steam version, so I know that the world of No Man's Sky is just built differently, and many aspects or rules of our world does not really imply here, and I write this comment with that in mind. And I'm really sorry if I come off as a 'That Guy' or as a jerk with this comment. - - - - Ruby-Spined Cow & Domesticated Blue Scaled Cow Sexipes rufospinus (red-spine/red-spined [Genus name here]) Sexipes caeruleus (blue [Genus name here]) The narrator said at the beginning: 'Domesticated Blue Scaled Cow are a relative of the Ruby variety' and the fact that they share the same Genus name but have different specific names, and it's shown in the video, which implies that these two are different species IN the same Genus, just like how the Tiger, Lion, Leopard, and Jaguar are in the Genus Panthera but have different specific names. Which is for me, as a casual speculative biology enthusiast, is okay. However, later the narrator said: 'They originally bred by farmers, but after herds were released into the wild the domestic cows called food scarcity problems for the Ruby-Spined Cow', okay, now this means that the Domesticated Blue Scaled Cow IS a breed, which means their binomial name should be something like this: Sexipes rufospinus domestica/domesticus/domesticum in my opinion. But then the narritor said: 'Practically invasive, this larger subspecies could out-compete the Ruby-Spined Cow', a subspecies? this implies that the Domesticated Blue Scaled Cow is a subspecies of the Ruby-Spined Cow, in this case, the Domesticated Blue Scaled Cow's binomial name should be something like: Sexipes rufospinus gigas. A potential solution: Saying that the type species Blue Scaled Cow (Sexipes caeruleus) is native to a different part of the planet Montara, where the Ruby-Spined Cow (Sexipes rufospinus ) was not native, so the two species originally evolved in Allopatric isolation. Then the species that colonised the planet domesticated (a part of) the Blue Scaled Cow, then those colonists brought with them a domesticated variety (Sexipes caeruleus domestica) to the continent where the Ruby-Spined Cow was native. When these Domesticated Blue-Scaled Cows were released/escaped into the wild, they began to compete with the native Ruby-Spined Cows, and thanks to their larger size, and they slowly outcompeting them. - - Lovers Eagle Erythroptera tricardia ([Species name here] red wing/red feather) The narrator said in the video: 'These hunters', now I'm not gonna comment on this statement, instead I'm just gonna roll with this idea. Now that their mating rituals are this noisy or otherwise flamboyant isn't unreasonable, some bird-of-prey in real life have similar mating behaviors. And that during the mating ritual males can get killed by their exhaustion is a nice touch since this is a thing in real life. - - Great Blue Tuskant Formicogigas azureus (Azure ant-giant) It was mentioned in the video that the older memebers of this species freez solid during the night due to their age, this implies that as the Great Blue Tuskant ages and grows bigger their metabolism slows down, which is interesting but not impossible, I can't think of an animal with such metabolism at the moment but can accept this. The idea that they freez solid is interesting but not unheardof, some amphibians do this in real life for example. - - Monaran Shore Wolf Hexapodos lupinus ([Species name here] with six legs) The fact that this animal is described as a primarily herbivorous, scavenger-omnivore is interesting, and its kind of makes sense to me. Judging from the animal's common name, 'Monaran Shore Wolf', this species is probably a coastal/or shoreline forager, I certainly can imagine that this animal may be diving into shallow water to forage on the underwater vegetation. It was also mentioned that these animals occasionally hunt for young Ruby-Spined Cows, it was also mentioned that due to the cow's herding behavior, the Monaran Shore Wolf is probably not a competent ground predator, but its may be more effective as a semi-aquatic ambush hunter like a crocodile, although even in this case, the rate of successful kills are probably still not very high. - - I'm very likely miss-translated the names, so please correct me there question: Cows, Wolves, and Ants are mentioned in the world of No Man's Sky? I mean in things like the names of starships, descriptions of items, descriptions of missions... ect. Overall, its a great video and very entertaining and very well made, I can't wait to see more in the future!
First off, I LOVE that you actually watched and absorbed the information! Thank you! The cows….yeah they are an issue. Trying to explain the biology can get tricky due to the proc gen of NMS, but I agree your solution would have been MUCH MORE likely. Cause yeah, the naming isn’t accurate, the explanations are very bare bones (we fully admit that). We are working on keeping the concepts as “realistic” as possible but some just don’t land. The team here are admittedly nature enthusiasts but film fanatics! Our main focus has always been keeping it cinematic. So forgive any mistakes in the biology. Best we can say is we’re trying, and I’m glad it’s entertaining even if parts are a little off. But PLEASE feel free to give these kinds of constructive criticism! It’s the only way the show can improve ^_^ we love it!
In answer to the cow, wolf, ant question. No, they aren’t, but we wanted to give them names that would feel common. Like how animals have their scientific names and their common names, and we use Earth animal names to keep them memorable. One of the biggest problems we all have with alien names is the fact they’re strange enough to not be memorable. By using earth animal names we found them to be more enduring from a cinematic perspective, so it’s what we went with.
@@NMSdiscovery It's an understandable point of view and I respect it, and I'm NOT going to tell you how to do your videos since it's your project, not mine. But this is somewhat of a contradiction, the premise of this channel is that this shows what an in-universe television network would look like in No Man's Sky, but if you are using the names of animals that are not referenced in the game, it's kind-off defeating the point of the channel... But again, it's not terrible and probably most of your audience wouldn't notice such a thing, I'm probably the rare exception here. Here are some real-life animal names that I found in the game: - Starship - Eagles Owls Hawks ---------- - Freighter Expeditions - Waterfowls Sea turtles Snails ----------- - Settlements - Spiders ----------- - Discovery menu - Moths Tapeworms Molluscs Polyps ----------- - Other - all the animal names that used in the 'Fossil Sample' and probably much more. But I can suspend my disbelief on the Cow because the Bovines are referenced in-game via fossil samples, and on the Ant as well because the Insects are referenced in-game via fossil samples.
@ you have an immense knowledge and it’s incredibly impressive, thank you for sharing and commenting ^_^ Also very cool info about animal names in NMS, that’s neat!
@@NMSdiscovery Biology-related mistakes in such a video (or video series for that matter) is something I'm willing to look past to a certain degree, since again, we are speaking about the world of No Man's Sky, and the game isn't very generous about giving information about these animals. We have the Discovery menu, and the Wonders catalog and this is pretty much it, and from these sources, the information is very limited, and thus we, the players, need to speculate on the aspects of these animals' lives, and these speculations are may or may not always correct. But again, the world of No Man's Sky is built differently compared to ours in many aspects, and because of this some rules and aspects (including biological ones) from our world may or may not apply here. But using terms interchangeably is something that although I can tolerate, but it's not something I'm a fan of, but I'm willing to give you guys the benefit of the doubt that this was an honest mistake on your end and that you are willing to make up for it. But again, it's not a terrible thing, and probably most of your audience wouldn't notice such a thing or really care, and this is shown by the fact that I'm the only one who pointed this out in the comments.
