The Rockaway Beach Branch was a rail line owned and operated by the Long Island Rail Road in Queens, New York City, United States. The line left the Main Line at Whitepot Junction in Rego Park heading south via Ozone Park and across Jamaica Bay to Hammels in the Rockaways, turning west there to a terminal at Rockaway Park. Along the way it connected with the Montauk Branch near Glendale, the Atlantic Branch near Woodhaven, and the Far Rockaway Branch at Hammels.
After a 1950 fire, the Jamaica Bay bridge was closed and the line south of Ozone Park sold to the city, which rehabilitated the portion south of Liberty Avenue and connected it to the New York City Subway system as the IND Rockaway Line. The portion north of the subway connection was closed in 1962, and three proposals exist for the reuse of the line.
    Legacy and planned restoration
The city never filed to abandon the isolated section of double trackage between Elmhurst and Ozone Park, due to the intended connection to the IND Queens Boulevard Line subway. This had been proposed under the IND Second System and later by Robert Moses, with an existing provision at the 63rd Drive subway station for a future connection to Whitepot Junction. An additional plan proposed a connection to the BMT Jamaica Line around the Brooklyn Manor station. However, in October 1955 shortly after LIRR service on the Queens portion of the Far Rockaway Branch ended, it was decided to terminate subway service at Liberty Avenue, with only the connection to the Fulton Street El completed. The right-of-way was sold to the City of New York and is now in most sections administered by the New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services ("DCAS"), except for a 7 acres (2.8 ha) section in Forest Park that has been mapped as parkland. The line remains officially out of service and is known by locals as "the forgotten spur", a name which dates back to the mid-1950s when the subway plans for the spur were dropped. Much of the original infrastructure has either been removed, damaged, rotted or undermined, though some rails, wooden ties, electrical towers and even de-electrified third rails can still be found in some sections, with much of it dating from 1908 or earlier, when the line was originally electrified. The failure to reactivate the northern portion of the line had been attributed to the potential high costs of connecting it to the Queens Boulevard Line, and capacity issues on the line which persist to day, making the Fulton line connection more feasible.
The line is a regular haunt for hikers, homeless, and such. The right-of-way can be easily be seen, especially along the abandoned elevated embankment in Woodhaven and Ozone Park. With exception to areas around the former junction with the Montauk Branch that have been redeveloped, and the Logan Bus Company lot, the line in its entirety is owned by the City of New York. The line is encroached by a number of adjacent property owners, which is an obstacle for anything to be done with the right-of-way.
There are proposals for rail service and a rail trail on this right-of-way. One proposal juxtaposes both plans.

At the west end of those lines is a cool tunnel that goes under the current LIRR track. First time I walked thru it was super creepy but i was probably 12.

That line should be reactivated, the R.O.W. is already there ! Queens Public Transit Committee is trying to get this restored and running. Unlike the "High Line Park" this railway is NEEDED ! Join QPTC and help get this line reactivated !

@@Amiri_Francis The stations are still there. You can see it ALL on Google maps Satellite view. This means that you can see it from space ! You can easily walk up from Metropolitan ave and look at it. Following it can be done to the main line tunnel (much over-Growth and poison ivy like you have never seen) and it's journey is better started at Fleet st bridge to main line tunnel (open on both sides) you can walk through. Looks like they added extra railing. Someone musta fell.

_"The line remains officially out of service and is known by locals as 'the forgotten spur',"_ never heard the term in my life. I just called it "the abandoned tracks." The walk toward Atlantic Ave is cool too! I know around that area we called "the trestle" when we'd enter through a gate near 88 Ave.

I don't know how these tracks could be restored the A train uses these tracks further up after the ozone Park station so where will the LIRR go along the A stopping at all the stops or I don't know what cause they will have to share the bridge. You have any ideas?

did you read the description? this is an isolated part of the tracks not controlled by the state. pretty sure it's safe to assume that entering the area controlled by the state, including where the tracks connect, would land the OP in a lot of trouble.

John Gregorios No problem! In forest park there’s a long trail that approximately circles the perimeter of the park. At around that point on the map I linked there’s a portion of the fence that’s cut open. Keep in mind this video was from May of last year so the opening might be not be there anymore.

I got a plan improve the (G) train lets sent it to Howard JFK airport or maybe even Rockway park how we can do this first extend the G train back to queens blvd and instead of it going to forest hills let’s rebuild and reactive the Rockway branch line and have it run don to ozone park meeting up with the A train and both run down to Howard JFK airport. I mean sure it will be expensive but I think we can all agree that it a FAR SMARTER plan than building a stupid ass queens way park. Seriously come on people we need transportation

I think NYCT owns those tracks and they go from Rockaway beach to Long Island City. It would be awesome to have a train line that runs from Rock Park to Long Island City and have the A service split between Lefferts and Far Rockway, rather than run that stupid shuttle.

Was this by the park that has this large jogging track? It's kinda cool though because they left behind some of the rusted towers that either once either supported wires to send information to station to station or they were radio towers. They are wilting and bending to the rust with time. Me and my dad walked down there one time. We came across this stoplight that had fallen over down the track and we could not proceed further because the leaves and branches grew too over.

I don't understand, often see abandoned rail lines with rails left in place, shouldn't the RR remove them? If not usable can't they be sold for scrap, or is that not economically feasible?

I don't know why they haven't scrapped the rails yet. It makes sense to me.

the cost of removing rails is more than the cost of steel itself. because you can't just remove them since most of it is in the park you gotta do environmental studies etc. Its costly and not worth it.

Cool! I just posted a video I made of that branch in 2013 soon after Hurricane Sandy. So many trees on tracks. I can see from your video it's been cleared out a bit. Yeah, this definitely needs to be reactivated. As for the residents that complain about the possible noise, there is something called sound proofing. They'll come around.
