In the US, they ask: “where were you when Elvis died?”
In Canada, we ask: “where were you when John Candy died?”
It was such a sudden and tragic loss to the world.
Your roles kept me and my family laughing and happy in good times and in some rough times also. Not only were you a great actor, but a great father, husband, and person in general. RIP John. We miss you. Hopefully you are making people laugh in heaven.

In 1979 I was in grade 9 and had a part time job at a place in Toronto called Mother's Sandwich Shop. John would come in really late after shooting SCTV. I remember his order was extra meatball sub with a chocolate shake. He would sit in a booth and wait to take it with him. Once he left me a $100.00 bill tip which I asked him to sign. I still have it. I loved this guy who was the kindest man with a big heart. He invited me to a private party with the SCTV crew at a pinball arcade called Funland which was downtown on younge Street Toronto. I went and met everyone and played air hockey with Katherine O'Hara who was just getting her career going back then.

Great actor, still sadly missed. Loved Uncle Buck and Trains boats and plains - but my favorite of all was 'Only the lonely'. Such a lovely portrayal of a man who wanted to do his best for a demanding mum and the love of his life. Great acting. Miss you big guy.

I was a massively overweight kid in the 80s and 90s and so as with most heavy kids comedy was my go to when situations got sticky. Jon Candy was my biggest role model and I would always try to imitate what i thought he would do in that situation. Truly one of the greatest to ever do it on the silverscreen

John Candy is an absolute legend of an actor. Planes, Trains & Automobiles, Summer Rental, Delirious, Splash, Once Upon a Crime, The Great Outdoors, Brewster’s Millions, Stripes, Cool Runnings are the films imo were the films he really starred as an amazing actor. Though as others have commented he was gr8 in others. Brilliant actor and will never be forgotten who love the films he starred in.

I was devastated when he died. I was 16 at the time and am now 43, the same age he was when he passed away. Looking back, it was such a massive loss. He was a naturally funny and talented actor and a great person. He unfortunately could not control his weight in the last few years of his life. It reportedly climbed up to 375 pounds at the time of his death. He left behind a loving family and I'm sure they all miss him, as we, his fans, do as well.

I was 8yrs old when he died and I remember it well. Already at 8yrs old I was a huge fan of his movies and also Camp Candy. I remember when he died I was really upset and I remember my mom showing me the article about his passing in the paper. As an adult, I am still a huge John Candy fan. One movie you need to watch if you are a fan and haven't seen it is The Clown Murders. I love his comedy roles but the roles where he doesn't do comedy are kinda rare so I jump at a chance to see them. It's a really good movie and he does a great job playing his character, Ollie.

TIL: Young John Candy looked a lot like Bill Hicks.
Serious note, him as Del Griffith changed the way I look at movies. He obviously had Funny down to a T... but if you don't wanna cry, and the end of Planes, Trains & Automobiles... you are a cyborg, and I can't understand you because you speak binary.
He absolutely destroys you, in that scene. But to go from so light-hearted and funny, to so sorrowful and heart-felt in the same movie, shouldn't be ignored.
    RIP John Candy
