JUNK SILVER EXPLAINED

- In this video I talk about junk silver and why it is one of the best types of silver for silver stacking. I have been buying junk silver for many years and I feel as though I still want more junk silver in my silver stack. If you are wondering what junk silver is then this is the video for you. Junk silver is US Mint half dollars, quarters, and dimes that are from 1964 or older. $1 Face Value (circulated) of junk silver = .715 Troy Ounces and $1.40 Face Value = about 1 Troy Ounce. When you are calculating prices $1 of junk silver face value can be any combination of coins. When looking at junk silver vs bullion it is clear that junk silver can be harder to price and buy. Junk silver investing can be done with confidence when you use my face value multipliers in my updated junk silver buying guide in the following video:

I still find it in my change when I go to the store be safe everyone
Hi SD! I visited a local Coin shop Saturday, and was talking about junk silver. He had never heard the story about how, in 1964, a 1964 quarter would buy a gallon of gas, about 20-25 cents at the time. If you had a 1964 quarter today, you could sell it at the LCS and take the cash and buy a gallon of gas... He got it before I finished the story 'cause he understands the value of real money, and it's value over time...
This is exactly how I explain why I buy constitutional coins
I’m so happy everyone keeps talking about 90% ! It keeps the premium down on 40 and 35 % so I can keep adding weight 😂
I'll take all i can.
Yes die rich lol…so your silver can live on while your 6 feet under .
But how much are you willing to pay? Most coin shops are over 25 times if they even have any.
I’m selling mine @ 25x. Most online stores have them for 28x now and/or sold out
Has always been my favorite for the last 10 years!
From my recollection as a kid coin collector, dealers started coining the term "junk silver" to refer to coins that had no numismatic value. They would put them in a "junk" pile, and sell them for the melt value of silver. It had nothing to do with the composition. Maybe that definition came later?
Thank you so much @silverdragons 😀 Leaving in UK and considering stacking US constitutional silver which is very new to me, the way you present the subject makes it much easier to figure it out 💯💯💯
Thanks for the new 90% video. I add some junk silver every month. A little or a lot, it doesn't matter. It adds up.
Thank you. I've been stacking but like you, never bought 90%. I Will go check out your other video
THANKS for THIS video, SD. Dimes were my first purchase. Half dollars were my second. Learning to decipher how much of each constitutes an actual ounce of silver will be very helpful. ALSO, I saw that Harry mentioned that junk silver availability is at a low point. So that is good too.
So hard to find, and when you do the premiums are criminal
@@jakobausterlitz8102 So true... $60 is way out of line. Straight metal value on halves right now (with a normal premium that junk silver gets) is about $9/coin.
This is an excellent overview. Thank you for posting.
Thank you for your detailed explanations. I liked and subscribed.👍
Thank you for going into detail about the weight of the coins
Thanks mate. Good advice.
Very informative, will do some research on Australian pre decimal coins and their silver content.
great breakdown
Was never interested in coin collecting. However, I'm all for stacking weight.
I’ve tried to educate my daughters as i plan on leaving my stack to them if i die
Like a broken record yet at times i wonder if they are actually listening
One of my biggest fears is they will us my junk silver for laundry change
😂😂😂😂
Great Video!
Perfectly explained
Awesome vid thanks
Cheers SD! Love the constitutional!!! Getting difficult to find under 20X now, but still stacking!!👊👊☮️
I just bought 90% quarters @ 17.42×face = 4.35 each. $24/oz is $4.34 each.
Thanks SS VERY EDUCATIONAL ABOUT 90%🥈🥈🙂👍
Thanks for the video
I received my $2 fv of 90% silver from hero bullion today and I have another $1 fv of 90% silver coming from hero bullion
I've been worried about hyper inflation for some time, so precious metals - basically gold and silver - seemed like a good hedge that I could afford. An old friend of the family found out and offered to sell me their silver coin collection. I found Kitco online and instead of counting it all, I bought it by the pound. I feel so much more secure now.
Good Morning Sir, I got to admit that I haven't purchased any constitutional coins, well, your right about the calculations to do to equate them to 1oz of Silver, no matter what the combinations to factor in, I've seen your video that you have put out and it's a very good video but my mind doesn't appreciate the math involved. I do see it in the future but as of now, I'll wait. Thank You Sir.
I think what we are going to find moving forward is Junk is going to draw higher and higher premiums as scarcity increases. Where as they make rounds, Eagles, Maples, Brits, etc, etc, etc every year. No more pre 64 coinage will ever be made.
Nice video
I was just in Liberty Coin & Currency in Beaverton and overhead a couple being charged $9 over spot on a tube of bullion.
Fractional silver rounds, coins and bullion in the past had a higher premium. Then, that found on consitutional silver. Its good to have to get your weight closer to actual trade value. That way your not over paying on each trade.
I only have 50 mercury dimes. Now that demand for consitutional silver has significantly increased. I would be hesitant on buying more of it, and instead would stick with three nines fine.
Thank you so much
Harry is selling for 24x
SD bullion selling for 29x
I'm seeing it on eBay for 22-23x...I'm buying 90% til its gon
me too, Junk silver is pretty much all I'm buying
Hello ,hello 👊 👋
Did you send gene that video ?,
That's going to be a good one 👍
Lovely junk!
Thank you
They also don't mint them anymore. Generally when this happens it also can take the price up as well depending on how old they are with the condition of which the coin is in holds a lot of value as well. Not just the silver side but also to the collectors. Just food for thought.
I’m just taking them before they’re gone. No more will ever be made so gotta get them before it’s too late!
Can you talk about older junk silver like barber coins, seated liberty coins, and busts?
Sup SD! How do you prefer to buy 90%, by weight or face value?
Unfortunately junk silver premiums are so high right now that it makes no sense. Finding rounds with better premiums is much easier. I would NOT tell a new stacker to stack junk. I agree that having a small amount makes sense.
Junk Silver rules!
Also, “war” nickels are 35% silver as well. 1942-1945 are the dates.
Local coin shop is selling 90% at 24X face value. He is the only shop in town with any left. I noticed you left out silver dollars which seems to have a different pricing scale than the 90% dimes, quarters and halves.
Silver dollars don't follow the same proportional silver weight as do dimes, quarters, and halves. Dollars are always a bit higher.
Morgans and Peace dollars have .77 and change of an ozt so they get priced differently. My LCS had them at $28 before the pop in price. Would imagine they are higher now.
Is there anywhere besides the LCS where you can buy junk by the roll? I feel lucky to have gotten two rolls of dimes there.
Auctions are the best bet, however, once you win a bid, the buyers premium, shipping, and taxes will kill your bank account.
Anything in short supply WILL appreciate in value!
Great video brother nice stack have a great week
I love junk silver and have accumulated quite a bit.... but the current premiums are crazy! ASE are even worse. Britannias, Maples, and Krugerrands are reasonable in my mind if you can find a deal on them. I bounce from dealer to dealer to shop.
If you go to sell junk silver do you get spot only or do they pay more than spot? sorry dont know alot trying to learn
@@jakobausterlitz8102 Whenever you sell you have to shop around. Prices can vary from dealer to dealer depending on the price momentum and their inventory.
@@jakobausterlitz8102 True... but there's always someone trying to lowball you! Always shop around.
@imxploring of course - but I'm buy and hold for now.
@@jakobausterlitz8102 Me too brother! Been slowly adding to my stack for years... and in times like these I feel pretty good about having done so!
Can u melt junk silver and separate the silver from the aluminum
I scoop as much as I can when I get the chance
I'm up to 900.00 face in Constitutional Silver. When I get to 1000 I will probably pause until the premium drops reasonably if ever
Thought my $320 face was a lot lol
@@donniebaer1992 oh that's a lot too! This was stacked over a 10 year period
@@dannymarlin9150 me too, 12 years but just started junk last 3 years. Keep stacking brother
Premiums not going back down very much. I doubt we see below 20x again. If so it won't last long
@Donnie Baer thank you brother. Keep on stacking!
Keep Stacking 🤠
For me i prefer mexican junk silver wayyy more cheaper if you can go to mexico, something that i do. 😊😊😊😊
What is it? 80%?
@@dustinmiller2775 several from 72% to 92.5%
@@vegassincity702 good to know! 😃
Just got a 1933 peso yesterday, XF condition
I really like junk silver. US Constitutional is great but I like all junk silver. Early British, Canadian and Australian is sterling .925 and I like the crowns, half crowns, florins, shillings, sixpence and Threepence coins. I try to stay away from anything less than 80% but I do make some exceptions if it's one of the types I collect but I don't look for anything less than 50% silver. At that point the premiums coupled with the sheer weight of coinage and only half of it silver is a burden so I pass on the war nickels and the 40% halves.
2:59 Swiss clad coins in copper-nickel do not have this copper color on the edge of the coin (it's silvery color). What does the US-Mint wrong?
I cleaned out my dealer of his junk silver today. all I can say is the stuff is almost gone now that coin premiums are jumping through the roof.
I inherited a bunch of junk silver. It's mostly in books. Should I take them all out? A lot of them are definitely changing color
Thank
Picked up $100 FV of UNK proof state quarters I like them way better then junk 90 and cheaper No slinks or wear to deal with
Almost everywhere I go or have purchased from sells by face value and not in Troy ounces. Definitely can be confusing the first few times but like many thing how else do you learn but by ones own mistake. Stack on friends.
Were 5 cents ever made of silver? I know that war time nickes had some silver in them, but those probably have more value as a collector coin rather than silver value. Other than that, were any of them silver at any other point?
Hey SD, recently I was given a bunch of pre-64 nickels. Are they worth holding?
Only if they are war nickels (which contain 35% silver). The way you can tell is on the reverse they will have a P, D, or S right above the Monticello building.
Are Nickels includedin junk coins?
so whats a nickel worth 1947 liberty
I look for junk silver in all of my change now...I have yet to find any.
Ive been stacking for a while but only recently started getting into constitutional- I thought all post 1964 coins were 40% silver for a while? If they are, are they worth keeping?
Only 65-70 Kennedy halves contain 40% silver.
@@WhiteAngloSaxon thank you!
When people talk about junk silver, how come the Morgans or Peace dollars are not mentioned? Thanks for the vid!
much harder to find,... and pricey
@slaveman Wilbury I know what you mean. I've noticed the area seems to play a part in the pricing. I refuse to purchase on line. My LCS told me he's going to have to raise his price $3.00 to $28.00 face for the Morgan's and peace dollars.
Still $28.00 is not bad, they are usually in decent condition.
@@joeszabo4237 28 dollars is a steal in my book,... I paid 35 for an 1884 Morgan last week- but it was in excellent condition.
They have premiums
Gold is where it's at 😎
So is a 1/10 once silver round junk silver or different ?
It's .999
What do you think of 90% silver ATB, State, and Territory quarters? In some corners they can't seem to get any love, but to me they are as good, if not better, then pre-1965 quarters. They are 90% silver, have virtually no wear, and were produced in a set number so no more will be made. But some stackers don'tr want them, and some big online dealers like JM Bullion, don't want them. I don't get it.
I literally just dumped a bunch of.90% halves, quarters, and dimes from the silver proof sets ‘92 on up. I got a tube of Libertads and ASE’s.
I'm with you! Couldn't agree more
What I ment can junk silver be separated from the copper
What’s the cheapest place to buy junk silver right now
The more I learn, the more I am puzzled by the term "barter" with respect to gold and silver. I think that gold and silver can be used to buy things.
I found a new 2004 Florida quarter which is silver
It came from a silver proof set.
I usually drop $100-200 on dimes most paychecks. Sorry I, the problem.
Are nickels 1964 and earlier 90 percent silver also???
No only 1942-1945 US nickels are silver. 35% silver per nickel to be exact.
If they're exactly like the quarters we already have idk if your going to have much luck trading with them if the currency collapses. Most people i dont think will value them more. Idk just saying
James 5:3
“Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as it were fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.”
It is EASY for people to use the Bible out of context, VERY EASY.
HAVE to READ the two verses before it that says,
James 5:1, 2
"Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten.
It is in regards to "Rich Oppressors" and their Judgment. GOD is judging their wealth as being CORRUPTED for their [bad] treatment of others. This is not a judgment on owning or having gold and silver. That being said, GOD is also saying, be careful that your FAITH IS NOT in gold or silver or putting it above GOD. It was currency then as it is now. Their is NO judgment in owning it and using it.
One more thing, if you are HOARDING IT, there is also judgment in that. As we are told in the parabells. If you are NOT tithing, their is judgement in that, etc...
Their is WISDOM in owning gold and silver. But we gotta be careful and check our heart.
Be Blessed and Be Vigilant ☝️💯
@@misterc6012 I was using this scripture in the proper context. It’s not evil to buy and own precious metals obviously, but Jesus is the savior of this world. Do not think that gold or silver will save you because it won’t. It sounds like you understand that from what you wrote.
God is simply reiterating the 1st commandment, to have no Gods besides him before you.
There’s no problem in g & s investing as long as Jesus is #1 above all.
@@garrettstrong9606 ,
Yes. You have to ADD CONTEXT, tho.
TOO MANY people only use one verse, and so a whole passage can be misrepresented, misused or misinterpreted. That's my point.
Amen ?

Junk silver is KING!
Imo I think we’re at the point that even if silver goes down I don’t think you’ll be able to find it under 20x
Yep I agree, it all changed so fast for 90%. Only a couple weeks and the price went up big.
The premiums on silver eagles is freaking ridiculous......it's highway robery
Totally agree! It's criminal! There's other governments issuing 1oz silver coins that are $9/Oz less!
That's been the case ever since COVID.
Con-vid
1965 thru 1970 half dollars were also Sandwich coins, with 80% on the outside and much less on the inside, to equal 40% silver in its entirety.
You really need to talk to someone from that era to get it all right.
OUR COUNTRY IS OFFICIALLY A BANANA REPUBLIC
buy buy buy!
Been buying quarters and dimes, half dollar premiums are too high for me.
Yeah... some LCS are adding a bit on halves... especially decent Franklin's and 64 Kennedys. I guess the fact that many have less wear has them figuring you're actually getting more silver then worn coins.
Isn't one ounce pure silver a better deal

Silver is ok, but I really like junk silver better because it has a history. With that being said, I like gold better because it's always been number 1, but it also doesn't take up so much room.
