- The first teacher or guru plays a significant role in shaping a child's destiny.
Be it a brilliant scientist, a superstar sportsperson, an outstanding painter, a gifted musician, each one of them owes a substantial part of their success
to their first teacher who recognized their special talent, nurtured and encouraged them to fulfill their dreams.
For the first teacher, the ultimate satisfaction is achieved when his or her pupils realize their potential. She instills the values of hard work, discipline, and
perseverance in those young minds that are so integral to a successful career.
One could say that she is like a skilled craftsman who cuts a rough diamond into a sparkling exquisite gem.
I, being a first-generation musician, was very fortunate to come under the tutelage of my first guru
Smt. Rajalakshmi Varadarajan She recognized a spark and kindled my interest in vocal music at a very young age. I was fascinated with her style of teaching and quickly got drawn to the wonders of Carnatic music.
She coaxed, cajoled, encouraged and inspired me to take up music seriously.
She has been an inspirational figure to me and comes regularly for many of my concerts to date.

N. V. Rajam mami was my guru too. She not only taught us (my sis & I) music, but also taught us many other important life lessons by just being the most incredible person. Feel fortunate that I had the opportunity as a child when I did 💕

A serious episode that demands viewing.
While listening to the episode, thoughts crossed my mind: (i) with the Gurukula system now fading or non-existing, will a particular bani, get lost - say GNB bani, MMI bani, MLV bani (ii) There is now access to too many Vidwan's & Vidushi's singing (recordings) on digital media. Would not students get weighed down heavily on learning and reproducing it for success (iii) Will we see a change in Carnatic music trend, by the next generation (iv) how to make rasikas to sit back and listen to taniavarthanam as people start going out. Taniavarthanam will lose its efficacy. I know sabhas serve good upma/ vada/ coffee at attractive prices but the love for music should suppress the temptation. In Mumbai, the late Pankaj Udhas concerts used to have intervals. Maybe Carnatic should start thinking on these lines to keep the music alive.
