Mike's voice at the beginning was hilarious! I didn't know that he did voices. Also, it was really nice to see a different 'instructor'. I love the variety of personality combinations that these two channels can offer.
This reminds me of that video where Ellen was rating video game spiders and was literally climbing the sofa. There is no shame in being afraid of this alien. That's just sensible. Practical. Bravery is being scared and doing it anyway. I literally couldn't play this game. I get scared of the tomb zombies in Skyrim! Watching someone else play it is enough. Ellen you are a legend! This is a lot like Dead by Daylight... except in DbD you're not hiding from an AI.... in fact you have no idea WHO you're actually hiding from, or how they think. Is this person trying for fast take downs, or slow methodical setup? You might not figure it out until it's too late.

For anyone just watching this, remember: it's so much worse when you're the one playing. Those heavy footsteps alone will haunt your dreams. IIRC, on one of the Buffy/Firefly commentary tracks, Joss Whedon said "if you want the audience to feel, put Willow in danger". That's basically what's happening here. I really love how they started in Medical, the exact level where the Xenomorph is set properly loose. The first encounter with it, while it is not scripted, does not allow its full range of behaviors. But from Medical onward, barring a small handful of levels and when the game decides you deserve a break, the Xenomorph can just...show up. Whenever. That is when the game properly begins - when the Alien is set loose to learn how to hunt. Just a little tidbit of information, should you revisit this game again. You aren't safe. Much love, and all the spookies!
CA drops us into the illusion of being pursued by a single Xenomorph throughout the game, but we actually encounter MANY. The Reactor section shows us that Sevastopol is infested.

Little fact. When the dr says "do i look like im in any state to do it Yada yada" in the book alien isolation, that dr was in a wheelchair so he really wasn't able to do it. Dont know why they didn't render a wheelchair in the game.
Medical, oof. That's one of the hardest parts. This was an solid run, well done. I'm also watching Eurogamer's run right now and I think you got them beat in terms of deaths and just noticing stuff. Shame about the bad luck with the vents at the end, though. Those sneaky-sneaks like 1:16:50 were amazing! As were the scared Ellen noises -- who can resist those XD
At least it's not the last two or so chapters. That bit where you're trapped in Sinclair's little enclave and have restart a generator while the alien's stalking you? Unbearable.
@@arndnaj Nah, they were playing on medium too. You could see it whenever they switched to/from inverted mode. It may have looked harder because they simply weren't paying attention. They missed savepoints, half the blueprints, wasted all their batteries on brightly-lit rooms and quite often didn't notice the Alien when it was just standing round the corner. Ellen just looked and listened more.
@@devlinburgess2463 Just played through the whole thing again this week. In the area you mentioned I wanted to crawl out of the vent there and swear it saw me. I waited round the corner of the vent to maybe hear him come in, but he never did. At least not through the normal opening: turns out part of the vent goes _up_ and he was just waiting there for me to crawl past and grabbed me. And on the way back from Comms I was carefully avoiding everyone by going through the vents and it was just casually coming at me from the other direction. Hadn't seen it do that before. I swear, this fecking game!
I described this game as how it would feel to play an Arkham game as one of the rank and file goons and you have maneuver around without Batman popping down on you for the whole game and just like Batman the Aliens learn more and more how to get you.
For me there's nothing more terrifying and anxiety inducing than hearing the footsteps of the alien heading straight towards me, especially if I can't see where the alien is coming from
What I didn't know/do on my first playthrough: Your gadgets and weapons do influence AI behavior. You can basically direct the Alien one way while going the other. This makes the game a whole lot easier.
Slight spoilers: To me, it just got less tense at the part where the alien no longer stalks you. It's just not the same, the thing is way scarier during it's hunt than anything else in the game.
Damn this game is tense, it actually makes me want to play it now. Props to Ellen and Mike is a great horror game companion, always reminding you of helpful stuff.

As much as I can appreciate Alien: Isolation as a magnificent piece of the horror craft I will never play it. I've discovered I can retract into an increasingly smaller ball of nerves just watching this stream.

I love horror, but considering how spooked Ellen is, its really impressive that she was not only willing to put that on display, but power through it squeaks and all, and make progress. This game is so stressful. I don't think I got more than 30 minutes in. I had to stop several times while watching this, just to collect myself. Ellen is quite brave!

I absolutely love the sound of the motion tracker and the attention to detail on the sets in this game. I still haven’t beaten it and it had my heart pounding the entire time
Uuuh Dead Space is coming. Love that game, its awesome. Although I always think games where you can actually defend yourself are a bit less creepy than those where you can't. Also really looking forward to see tha Phasmaphobia Test... wonder who will take part in that one, because I think that game is pretty damn creepy, the sound design is awesome. I had a game a few days ago where the ghost just shut a door right behind me in the first minute, while I was in a small room... even though it won't kill you at that point that was not pleasant...
If you guys are looking for something else for Ellens Fear Academy, I would wholeheartedly recomend "Observation" or "SOMA". They do Suspense/Horror amazingly well
This is the first episode of this series I've seen, so I'm not sure if it's still going or not, but if it is, I think you guys would enjoy Darkwood. Lovely cosmic horror, fantastic atmosphere and style, and really cool mechanics to play with, such as every safehouse in the game having a giant gaping hole in the wall that can't be repaired, that you have to learn how to deal with :)
Way to go Ellen for playing this :D This was fun. P.S I remember when Mike was strapped to a heart rate monitor while playing this. Quality laughs. Both of you were great on this stream.
I think to make up for this, next month you need to do Ellen's Sphere Academy and play wholesome, sphere-based games like Super Monkey Ball and Pokemon.
Just going back through the 2020 hallowstreams and I love how right Mike is -- the alien IS more scared of Ellen than Ellen is of it....which is the reason it keeps attacking her, much as we do a cockroach or spider.

I will always love this game, like mike says the atmosphere, tone, enviroments and the alien are all 10/10 terrifying. I play this every year around Halloween. This year I'm playing on Nightmare difficulty haha ;_;

Medical, oof. That's one of the hardest parts. This was an solid run, well done. I'm also watching Eurogamer's run right now and I think you got them beat in terms of deaths and just noticing stuff. Shame about the bad luck with the vents at the end, though.

At least it's not the last two or so chapters. That bit where you're trapped in Sinclair's little enclave and have restart a generator while the alien's stalking you? Unbearable.
I think the Eurogamer team was on a harder difficulty setting.
@@arndnaj Nah, they were playing on medium too. You could see it whenever they switched to/from inverted mode.
It may have looked harder because they simply weren't paying attention. They missed savepoints, half the blueprints, wasted all their batteries on brightly-lit rooms and quite often didn't notice the Alien when it was just standing round the corner. Ellen just looked and listened more.
@@devlinburgess2463 Just played through the whole thing again this week. In the area you mentioned I wanted to crawl out of the vent there and swear it saw me. I waited round the corner of the vent to maybe hear him come in, but he never did. At least not through the normal opening: turns out part of the vent goes _up_ and he was just waiting there for me to crawl past and grabbed me.
And on the way back from Comms I was carefully avoiding everyone by going through the vents and it was just casually coming at me from the other direction. Hadn't seen it do that before.

Easily one of greatest games of all time.
I described this game as how it would feel to play an Arkham game as one of the rank and file goons and you have maneuver around without Batman popping down on you for the whole game and just like Batman the Aliens learn more and more how to get you.

For me there's nothing more terrifying and anxiety inducing than hearing the footsteps of the alien heading straight towards me, especially if I can't see where the alien is coming from

What I didn't know/do on my first playthrough: Your gadgets and weapons do influence AI behavior. You can basically direct the Alien one way while going the other. This makes the game a whole lot easier.
This was one of the most underrated games the year it came out. So good!! It is tense at times.
Slight spoilers: To me, it just got less tense at the part where the alien no longer stalks you. It's just not the same, the thing is way scarier during it's hunt than anything else in the game.
Damn this game is tense, it actually makes me want to play it now. Props to Ellen and Mike is a great horror game companion, always reminding you of helpful stuff.

As much as I can appreciate Alien: Isolation as a magnificent piece of the horror craft I will never play it. I've discovered I can retract into an increasingly smaller ball of nerves just watching this stream.

I never check the tracker lol. I find relying on my hearing makes the experience even more immersive, because the Alien ISN'T subtle.

This game is so stressful. I don't think I got more than 30 minutes in. I had to stop several times while watching this, just to collect myself. Ellen is quite brave!

I'm with you Ellen, I absolutely adore the Alien movies (all of them but Alien and AVP are my favorites). And this game both terrifies me and makes me happy.
I played this on Xbox 360, and thought that's the only reason I got framerate issues, I didn't realise the Xbox One had issues too.
I absolutely love the sound of the motion tracker and the attention to detail on the sets in this game. I still haven’t beaten it and it had my heart pounding the entire time

Uuuh Dead Space is coming. Love that game, its awesome. Although I always think games where you can actually defend yourself are a bit less creepy than those where you can't.
Also really looking forward to see tha Phasmaphobia Test... wonder who will take part in that one, because I think that game is pretty damn creepy, the sound design is awesome. I had a game a few days ago where the ghost just shut a door right behind me in the first minute, while I was in a small room... even though it won't kill you at that point that was not pleasant...

If you guys are looking for something else for Ellens Fear Academy, I would wholeheartedly recomend "Observation" or "SOMA". They do Suspense/Horror amazingly well

This is the first episode of this series I've seen, so I'm not sure if it's still going or not, but if it is, I think you guys would enjoy Darkwood. Lovely cosmic horror, fantastic atmosphere and style, and really cool mechanics to play with, such as every safehouse in the game having a giant gaping hole in the wall that can't be repaired, that you have to learn how to deal with :)
Way to go Ellen for playing this :D This was fun. P.S I remember when Mike was strapped to a heart rate monitor while playing this. Quality laughs. Both of you were great on this stream.
I think the reason Ellen did better in this game is because it’s more like a stealth game than RE7 is, and she likes being sneaky
I think to make up for this, next month you need to do Ellen's Sphere Academy and play wholesome, sphere-based games like Super Monkey Ball and Pokemon.

Just going back through the 2020 hallowstreams and I love how right Mike is -- the alien IS more scared of Ellen than Ellen is of it....which is the reason it keeps attacking her, much as we do a cockroach or spider.
Whenever I get scared watching this, all the muscles in my abdomen kinda reflectively clench up and I got to say I'm getting a great workout.

I will always love this game, like mike says the atmosphere, tone, enviroments and the alien are all 10/10 terrifying. I play this every year around Halloween. This year I'm playing on Nightmare difficulty haha ;_;
