Is it possible in the future, you can do a comparison of teleconverter performance? To be specific, I m curious on the performance and loss of sharpness for sigma tc 1411 and 2011. I simply can't find people testing these.
I'm surprised how good this is. Laowa has been putting out great lenses lately

In China pancake lenses are called “餅乾鏡頭” or "餅乾頭” for short, and that translates back to "cookie lens"

I'm a bit surprised how sharp this lens actually is given it's price and size. Seriously considering one myself for an UWA on APS-C.
Hi Christopher! First, let me thank you for all your great videos. Do you feel the focus ring runs as smoothly as the aperture ring? I just bought the lens and on my copy it feels almost a bit scratchy in comparison. I wonder if it's just mine and if I should ask for another copy. (Maybe I'm just spoiled by Voigtländer, Olympus and the like.)
If we shoot both lens at F/4 aperture ... How it will compare with already existing 9mm f/2.8 Zero D lens?

0:30 this is of interest to me - so because it has no electrical contacts, you can use it on full frame Z bodies? Would that mean that if I covered over the contacts with electrical tape, or used a dumb F to Z adapter, I could use DX glass on a Z body without automatically going into crop mode?
I'm mainly thinking of the Tokina 11-16 here - that would be a cheap option for going ultrawide, because at the long end it just about covers a full-frame sensor. (I don't mind having to do a bit of manual post in LR.)
Also, did the IBIS work with this lens? If so, that would be terrific news!

I was debating if I should get a Z30 but was hesitant because Id always need a wide lens for the odd interior shot, this lens may have solved that issue

Basic question but just wanted to make sure before commiting to this lens, with the lack of electrical contacts on the back of the mount does focus peaking still work with the manual focus?

Well, you see the focal length and the size of the front lens element, an extreme vignetting shouldn't be any surprise because it's a given. I am not surprised it doesn't go away when stopped down to even the threshold of diffraction. Plenty of wideangle lenses in this range that are larger, heavier and maybe not much more expensive with no wider than f2.8 would be of much more practical use.
Probably the silver version was only made for the Z, Fuji and a few others because they have the black/silver cameras (like the Zfc for NIkon, and Fuji's black/silver models). Probably would look a bit odd on Sony's all-black cameras, although you could probably mount it on the A7c, although probably still doesn't fit in as well with the color sceheme as I think that's more a black/dark gray color scheme.
All in all though I think this is perhaps one of the better "cheap" third party lenses I've seen . I've also got the TT Artisan's 7.5mm fisheye and that thing is not exactly sharp, but it also cost half of what this one is, and is more for creative photography tasks IMO. This one has more practical uses for things like landscape and offers some hope for Nikon Z APS-C users as Nikon has not officially released their 12-28 lens yet (it's development has been announced but ship dates are not known).
No I am able to see silver version for Canon rf mount as well. Canon don't have silver like body nowadays.
I was waiting for this lens multiple months to come out. Sound pretty interesting to me, especially for backpack travelling - like the new Samyang 12mm f2 just darker but also wider :D
The price is a tad bit to high imo though.

Chris, hi ! Can you make test of Laowa 14mm f/4 Zero-D DSLR lens ? This lens somehow missed the attention of all the testers I trust. I just now went to their website and found out about its existence.
According to their mtf charts, this lens looks better than the mirrorless version and it also has aperture control on Ef-mount.
Christopher, have you ever come across a lens where the body is made of polished stainless steel?
I'm no camera expert, but I feel the correct complicated way to describe the vignette is instead of the corners getting 'brighter' the center of the image gets 'darker' when you shut the aperture haha. I'm just making stuff up
Yes. Chinese call these tiny flat lenses "cookie lens" in Chinese.
Laowa just translated what Chinese usually called into English directly.
Looks fairly impressive. Manual focus aside, could even be useful as a vlogging lens? Stop down a bit and just stay in the hyperfocal distance.
A great lens, I've been intrigued by it since Laowa showed prototype a while ago... Wonder how does it hold up agains my Laowa 9mm f/2.8🤔

I stick with my laowa Full Frame 9mm F5.6....granted the small max aperture but it is offset by my supersensitive sensor of Sony A7 S3....among the chinese lenses, Venus Laowa brand is head and shoulder way over other competitors...more power to it.

any chance you could run some tests of smartphone cameras vs mirrorless cameras? lots of people saying smartphone cameras are better these days than designated cameras, but I'm not so sure. I'm inclined to say under "good" conditions it's close, but under less than ideal conditions a camera will provide the flexibility to get good shots that a phone cannot. I'd like your insights on this issue. thanks!
They are better to give you a final image without any work (HDR) but of course not in terms of absolutely IQ. Phones give "good enough" images much faster, and a lot of times they look great in a small screen but not so good in a large screen (when you can see all that uncompressed noise). In my opinion they may facilitate "lazy", "bad photos" because they don't require the extra work that forces you to be a better photographer.
I think they called it cookie for a reason: it has protruding manual focus and aperturr rings which provides "oreo" cookie vibe
It's rather that "pancake lens" was translated into cookie lens/cracker lens in Chinese in the first place and that's how they translated it back, without knowing that elsewhere it's called a "pancake lens". I think they translated it into cookie lens because pancakes are big and commonly eaten wrapped like a burrito or sliced like a pizza in China so a "pancake lens" would have made no sense in Chinese. Due to the huge difference between Chinese and English a lot of translations are very creative, like Coca Cola in Chinese is "Tasty and Happy" and BMW is translated as "Prized Stallion". It's funny how much of our world view changes due to choices of words.

I wanted to ask what's the difference between a pancake and a cookie lens, it's good that I watched till the end.
It's that when pancake lens was translated into Chinese they called it cookie lens. Laowa just straight translated back without knowing it's called a pancake lens elsewhere.😂

This could turn my xe3 into an x100v :). 10mm is very wide and I think a longer length like 18 or 23mm could be easier to make.
Not sure about the cookie nomenclature but I can confirm they make excellent pancakes in China ;)
Here's a secret for using the lens: For use on people, you have to be within 3-5 feet of the subject when taking a photo of them. Ideal for dinner table photo(s) perspective. That focal length hits a soft spot. 🤣👌Good luck y'all!!!

Dissappointing!! I received my copy today and its terrible! Used it on my Fuji XE-4 and the quality is as soft as a babies ass and nothing is in focus at infinity for far objects and focus peaking. Maybe I got a bad copy but either way, back to B&H it goes.
$300 is not cheap, but ok, I would buy it. But... here in Europe, the price will be considerably higher for sure. And that will be too much for such an mediocre performing lens
