  • We had our first truly hot day this week. It felt like shorts and flipflop weather 😀 But we know we'll still have frost before true warm weather arrives to stay here in the mountains of Appalachia. I spent the day trying to get ahead on our long list of garden chores. I was wishing Matt was with me instead of at work 😀

I'm like you, ma'am, in that my favorite time of the year outdoors is the few days in spring when the trees flower and begin leafing out. There is just something about seeing the various shades of light green, red, pink, purple and white while you can still make out the limbs in the tree tops that touches my soul in a special way. The redbud in my yard I wrote about a few days back will be in full bloom for Easter Sunday this year. May the Promise of Easter lift up your hearts and give you the only hope that really matters in this world, that of the world to come!

You brought a tear to my eyes talking about the generations of your Irises. My great, great grandmother brought African Violets from Germany when she came to America. She gave some to my Great Grandmother, who gave the off springs to my Grandma, who passed off spring to my mom. My mom took great care of them. Unfortunately, my mother was hospitalized for a long time before she passed, and there was no one to care for her violets. I tried to save them, but was too late. I always wanted to keep the tradition going.

“Having a popsicle without me! That’s almost like cheating! Almost!” “ My husband is great, I worship the ground he walks on!”Matt is hilarious! 😂😂 what an awesome sense of humor he has! He reminds me of my precious Daddy, God rest his soul. He had a sense of humor just like Matt’s! Gosh, how I miss that! I had mixed beans for supper yesterday. I mixed pintos & great northern beans. That’s my favorite. I cooked some chunks of lean pork in with them. I baked veal chops to go along with them & the other side dishes. Mama & I are getting our garden started, as well. It was already 86 degrees & humid as the dickens here yesterday! It’s barely April! We are in the dead head of A southern “Sprummer”! I am so seriously NOT looking forward to summer! Can Matt, Mama & I just crawl into a mountain cave and “ hermitize” ourselves through June, July & August?! Happy Easter Tipper, Matt, Granny, Corie, Katie, Austin & Nick….& the entire Wilson/Pressley clan. God bless you all.

I know what you mean about being sentimental about flowers. I have some old fashioned purple irises in my back yard now that came from my Grandmother’s yard. She has been in heaven since March of 1999. I also have some yellow irises that came from my Mother’s back yard also. I believe she told me that my Daddy’s mom shared them with her. So, I have some generational flowers in my yard. All of these ladies had a love for flowers and had a green thumb. Their yards always looked so pretty. I think that is where I get my love for gardening and flowers. It gives me such a good feeling to plant something and see it grow! 😊 Happy Resurrection Day to all of your family!❤

Spring gardening is such hard work, but the rewards are so worth it. Once all of those flowers begin to bloom and show their beautiful canvas of colors, you’ll be so happy with the effort. When those vegetables start to produce food for the table you’ll be so satisfied with the results. It seems that your fortunate to have room for a nice garden and family members to help you with all of the chores that have to be done. Best of luck this season. One of the sweetest things I think I have ever seen, when you said you planted right back here, Matt turned around to see where you were talking about. That small act of kindness and respect truly touched my heart. In fact I actually said 'wow' So many husbands after a hard day's work in the heat would have listened but not turned around to actually see what and where, knowing what you were talking about. But, Matt turned to look and really wanted to know more about what was important to you! That wasn't a huge thing, but yet one of the kindest things I have seen. Good Job Matt!! Y'all are such an amazing family and an inspiration to us all!!

I do love my pass along plants. So many from friends and family now long gone. Here on the Gulf Coast I can plant Boston ferns outside. They do freeze in winter but the roots don't die. My starts go back generations. My great great paternal grandmother gave a start to my great grandmother when she immigrated from Sweden in the 1870s. She gave a start to my grandmother who gave starts to her children and now I grow them. I do not know if any of the present younger generation are growing them. I also have a Christmas cactus handed down from, my great grandmother. It is now too huge to move out of the sun house.

I just don't want them close to the house either . One year, we had an ice storm, and huge one came down in woods behind my house . I was thankful that I my house was 50 yards away . Horseradish is very invasive, it will take over your whole garden quickly. My brother planted a small pot of it and it almost took over his whole yard. He had a hard time getting it out, he ended up having to till the yard and replant grass. He gave me a few so I had some old plywood and I cut it into pieces about 3 feet by3 feet and buried it making like a box and I was able to contain the Horseradish. It worked for several years until the plywood rotted. I think it would be easier to grow it in a container, but it will need watering daily. Good Luck with yours.

That sure aggravates my arthritis bad but I do enjoy listening to it hit the roof plus the birds sure seem to be enjoying it . They are singing so beautiful how I wish I could be getting my flower beds ready and my little garden but that's not going to happen. Tipper, watching you yawn made me start. Guess it's time for me to hit the sack. That rain will be good for everything you planted today. I like the lime Popsicles and sometimes I get a bite of my husband's coconut in-between and it's good.

Beautiful, Purple Bearded Iris is what we call them in Spain. Ours are nearly finished flowering, end of April they will all be gone. I transplant some every year, they might not flower this year but that bank will look beautiful next year. Happy Gardening!

We got over 3 1/2 inches here over the weekend to. Matt always has the right words to say at just the right time.
While you were having that popsicle by yourself, I thought he’s gonna get her for that! Lol 😂 and he did. 👍🏻😂

My Grandmother used to make homemade popsicles. Sooo good. Strawberry, Peach, and Honeydew. Puréed the fruit with water and sugar. Probably very similar to Outshine. Happy Spring!!

I live in South Carolina and we've had so much rain. I don't garden, but I've had a screen in porch made and have to wait for some dry weather to get it finished. They can't stain the wood until we have some dry weather. It's rained every weekend for the past month. God is teaching me to be patient. I'll love it for a long time when it does get finished.

Hi Tipper! In AZ we have the Outshine Popsicles Mango with Tajin (spicy seasoning). They are my favorite! Matt may like them as he likes spicy. Tajin is really great on any kind of fruit too. It isn't too spicy so you may like it as well!

I like the smell of pine trees and hearing the wind blow sofly through them. They do not do well in storms though. Thanks for telling the brand of the popsicle. I'm going to see if I can find some around where I live. I think I would love the peach and coconut ones the best. I'm not a fan of lime. Thanks for all the vids you share. I love to hear the birds sing. Very peaceful and serene. 🍀🌲🪴

The apple tree buds are just starting to swell here in Central Iowa! My husband and I were able to till our garden and get the potatoes planted. Supposed to be in the low 80's the next few days so I would like to plant my cool season crops. I direct sow all my vegetables except tomatoes, of course.

Watching u tear those Irises apart made me want 2 get out and do the same 2 hostas when they start poking through. If I live near u we cld trade.
Have u thought of donating some 4 a local garden club sale?
So sorry 4 the loss of your loved ones in yr family. Sending my heartfelt prayers yr way!
Hey on a funny note... I'm with Matt... don't want 80 degrees in April! Lol

I hope you have a wonderful Easter weekend and God bless!

Another fun time with Tipper. thank you! I have really old Irises too. I took them out of the original bed and then just tossed them alongside of the deck. There they have been for over ten years! I started two new flower beds last year so I dug some up….and never got them replanted. I just threw them in a planter box. I hope they made it through the winter. I am thinking I got them from my sister close to twenty years ago, when we built the house! I too plant nasturtiums along the edges of all the beds. Last year I had a couple strays come up. They are so delightful. Every year I say I am going to eat some of the flowers and leaves and then I never do.
I try not to envy your weather. Our snow is melting. Today it melted enough that a jar of gravy that I had put in the snow around New Years was finally visible and I chipped it out! I use the deck for a freezer in the winter or to at least cool things off! Have a beautiful Easter celebration with all your family. God bless you and keep you all. AND…I am going to start rewarding my hard work in the yard with Outshine popsicles this year!! Hopefully that will be in about a month!

Thank you. Tomorrow snow flurries…1-3 in…..but after that….warm temps…and no lows below freezing!! I just found rattlesnake beans at a local store. I am going to try them. Today I am finally starting seeds indoors. I have 32 milk jugs outside for winter sowing……
      I live in hope! Blessings
