I was lucky enough to have run the R110A. That train, when it worked right, was smooth as silk. The one issue you didn't mention was that, no matter how far the train was geared down, it could hit 80 mph and higher. Yes, I did hit 80 mph on the Lexington Avenue line while in test service. Going from Bowling Green to Borough Hall, I hit 85 mph. It had Westinghouse propulsion, btw.
I remember when they debuted at the Transit Museum in November 1992 and being fascinated by how futuristic it looked. They showed it off at various locations in the subway the Winter of 92-93 & then when I heard of them running in service, i made it my mission to ride them and eventually i did. I rode the R110A once in 1994 & the R110B twice in 1994 & 1995. They were very smooth cars. I preferred the R110B. The R110A was very tight when crowded. I heard people complaining on that 2 Train cursing about how uncomfortable it was. Fast forward to 2000 & we get the results of those trains with the R142/142A’s. Great video!
I used to ride the R110A from Wakefield-241st Street to 149th Street-Grand Concourse back when they first came out in 1993, I was only 7 when they were first introduced to the MTA. So I ridden the Manhattan bound R110A 2 train following the White Plains Road line and got off at 149th Street-Grand Concourse. 7 years later I rode the first ever R142 2 train from Wakefield-241st Street to Grand Central-42nd Street and it was rerouted onto the Lexington Avenue line because of construction between 135th Street and Clark Street so 3 trains only ran between Harlem-148th Street and 145th Street as a shuttle so they were completely suspended between 145th Street and Clark Street so they couldn’t get into Brooklyn at all and into Lower Manhattan via Lennox Avenue and 7th Avenue. In the summer of 2000 I took a borrowed 2 train from Grand Central-42nd Street to 161st Street-Yankee Stadium for the very first ever Subway Series of all time of the Yankees vs the Mets. The borrowed 2 train was an R142 train and was painted white with Yankee blue pinstripes and saying Subway Series 2000 with the Yankees and Mets logos and the ends of the train and on the cars. Later on in 2000 I took an R142A 6 train from Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall to 125th Street and transferred at 125th Street to an uptown 2 train taking me up to Wakefield-241st Street as it again was running on the Lexington Avenue line until further notice which would be once the construction on the 7th Avenue line was finished. In August of 2002 I took the first ever R142 4 train from Grand Central-42nd Street to Mosholu Parkway and Woodlawn. In the later days of 2002 I took the first ever R142A 4 train from Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall to Woodlawn. Then in 2005 I took an R142 5 train from Bowling Green to Eastchester-Dyre Avenue. On September 21st 2008 I took the last run on the 4 train from Woodlawn to 161st Street-Yankee Stadium on the last ever game day at the old Yankee Stadium and watched all the legendary players and alumni players get called and them run onto the field for old time sake, I then watched the actual game be played for the very last time at the old Yankee Stadium. Later on that night I watched the very last celebration at the old Yankee Stadium. At midnight on September 22nd 2008 just several minutes after leaving the old Yankee Stadium for the very last time I took the very last 4 train from 161st Street-Yankee Stadium to Woodlawn and began to get emotional because I was never gonna see the Yankees play there again. On opening day at the new Yankee Stadium I took the very first Metro North train ride from Crestwood to the brand new Yankees-East 153rd Street station and watched the very first ever game at the new Yankee Stadium, I started to say to myself that it wasn’t the same being at this Yankee Stadium because it’s just a replacement to the old one and we will never see 85 years of history be made from 1923-2008 again, we now see modern day history be made not classic history be made. In 2012 when Rich “Goose” Gossage came to The Bronx once again and was on the field of the current Yankee Stadium, he signed autographs on all the merchandise including his jerseys that were fan made and he was very disappointed that they got rid of the old Yankee Stadium where he did his best games ever. Also Rich “Goose” Gossage was number 54. In 2014 I took the 4 train from Mosholu Parkway to 149th Street-Grand Concourse and walked down to Exterior Street, across the Yankees-East 153rd Street overpass near between the stairwell to the street and the mezzanine and right to the stadium itself, it was Derek Jeter’s final game and I took my seat in section 203 aka the bleachers nicknamed the Bleacher Creatures. I’ve done the same things for many years since 1990 but did them the most since 1993.
I really think the MTA should preserve the R110B by making a new 3 car set out of cars 3007 (motor), 3002 (trailer), and 3009 (motor) depending on the condition of those cars. It could then be used for NYTM events like the parade of trains along Brighton!
As a retired motorman 'B' division i can attest to you're review of the R44s (well done by the way) To many here it might come as a surprise the R44s were my personal favorite to operate (the other R38/32) as it was a challenge to brake into a station especially a express station at high speed like Nostrand ave or Utica ave on the A line where the rule of thumb was once the braking sequence started into a station, you held brake pressure right into the >10< car marker in the station ! If you released brake pressure and applied brake pressure again the compressors were not fast enough to supply brake pressure which usually meant you slid past the >10< marker by several feet pissing off the conductor because he or she was past the board LoL......

I once had someone say they wished the R110As were mass produced....than an R142A 6 Train (aging myself here) pulled in just as he said that. I think the R142A is only train directly related to the NTTTs. As you said the R110B design was scrapped and we ended up with the R143s and 160s which have grown on me.
The R110A is my fav NTTT train it has Red color pallet seats in the Front/Middle/Rear cars while the others (B-Cars) would have yellow or blue colored seats its propulsion system was great. It was fast but the seats were bad to sit on the announcments did sound diffrent than today's but it was taken out of service in 1999 (The R110B's were taken out of service in 1996 due to 3006 being on fire.) But the R130 would be a staple of the IRT for new Tech trains of the milenium and soon the R262/A. (Fun Fact: In 1992 Bombardier was making the T1 for the TTC so some T1 propulsions were used for the R110A which is why the T1 and R110A propulsions sound the same.
Imagine if we had a "TOMT" (Train of Many Techs)? We had: Train of Many Metals Train of Many Colors Holiday Train (R1-R9) I know it is not possible tho sadly. They could run fan trips with R160s n R143's in 2070
Important to note that new conductors boards were also installed along the 6th Avenue Line for the R110Bs as the A was planned to be rerouted along 6th Ave to Brighton Beach with the Q going to 8th taking its current role, also reflected by the presence of an orange A bullet on its rollsign

I would have love to see a small production run for both of this trains that overcome the issues they might have had. Although I understand they were only a prototype, their design was soooooooo cool and it would have been nice to have them in the system for longer.
The R44's were not prototypes for the R46's, they were a full production order. They were also fully tested for 5 months before entering service! Dec 71 - Apr 72 including testing on the LIRR where it set the speed record. They replaced a number of R1/R9's and was to run on the Second Ave Subway, which of course never happened! I rode them in the mid 70's on the D line.
i say this alot of times. **IF THE R110A/B's DIDNT FLOP THEY WOULD STILL BE AROUND TODAY. THINK OF HOW DIFFERENT THE WORLD WOULDVE BEEN WITH THAT TYPE OF TECHNOLOGY TYPE TRAINS**
I think the 110 b eas in that length is to see how well if a motor is not needed in the middle. Or back then they can’t set up 4 or 5 cars set with no motors in middle.
Great Video as always. I remember catching a 110B in the summer of 96 on the A, really felt like a step into the future at the time, from the station indicators, futuristic sounding traction motors and ice cold AC (downright frosty compared to the R46/32s running on the A otherwise at the time. The R110b are 67 ft cars drawn back to the BMT standards in triplets. The reason is that the 75 ft cars could not fit into the premises of the lines under the BMT eastern division which is what the J,M,Z and the L use. So they use this triplets configuration to try to have it fit in the entire B division dispite the constraints in the system. A single triplet unit can measure 201 ft with each car length in 67 ft supposing the length of the Franklin shuttle, but two triplets length a total of 402 ft, 78 ft shorter of a typical 8 car train when technically, it takes 7 cars to be roughly equivalent to a 8 car 60 ft train and all three triplets length a full set in which I don't know where the conductor would position in either the 4th car or connect the 7th car so there are some issues. So transit went with a better option to have all technology train assemble into 2 semi units much like the r110a adapt the second electronic strip map from r110b and incorporate the rest of the features onto the r142 and 143 while the r160 was upgraded with new features and adapted two modifications of semi units to fit in the entire B division
Why did one explode? Why did no one say why???? A train EXPLODED and all I can find of it are off handed mentions of it, like Yada yada yada It entered service and then one exploded and caught fire yada etc etc WTF!?!?!?!?!?
At the 5 minute mark you say there are other factors about NTTs. Have you done a video on this? I think it would be interesting. You have excellent content, too. Thanks!
Really excellent video and when it comes to R110A these became a Pump train. The closest train to have a propulsion unit to them is a Taipei Metro C371 which was built in Yonkers Kawasaki Plant 1989-1994 same time as R110A. First trains to be manufactured at Yonkers Kawasaki factory were PATH PA-4 R68As since there are New York Times article dating back to 1987-1989. The hard part is trying to recreate them for Train Sim World 2 if the R110A were to be a DLC train for Lexington Avenue line R110b Queens Blvd
I think that MTA plans to use theses trains on special events, You know thoses special days were a bunch of old retired trains come back to service and then get retired after two days? so something like that
Until today, I still don’t understand why the designers didn’t make the R46s have 5 doors per car. That way, the number of doors would remain the same for the same length of train.
You know, I always wonder where the MTA gets the money for these trains considering that the transit system has been broke for years. I would say that upgrades to the rail infrastructure would go a long way toward helping service improve like CBTC, and autonomous trains, decreasing running costs and increasing frequency
The MBTA tacked onto the R110B order for their red line and ran them for close to 30 years. They’re being replaced by the new CRRC fleet renewal order.
Idk if you'd be interested, but I think it'd be cool if you did a video on the former NYC Transit Police/Staten Island Railroad Police/current NYPD Transit division/MTA Police and maybe the history. Great vids tho man. 👍
LoL... practice what you preach is good practice. Never rode the R110a ,but Did ride the 110b plenty of times. Loved it...and wished the TA stuck with the 67 ft model. However, the undercarriage placement was it's downfall, since it was practically unable to operate along the Eastern Division. The Standards we're able to because the undercarriage was placed further back under the car body. The interior styling was on the money, definitely how transverse seating could work on smaller car models. So much could be said for the cars...but as you can see...the body was so well built... The mechanics were not so much.
Don't forget we have the brand new R262/as coming soon to replace all the R62AS R62S on the 1 3 6 S lines for CBTCS. We know that the R211as is here for a test trains 🚃.
r62 is my favorite. The sound, emergency doors and Inside the cabin air is always cleaner than r68 trains are. It also has the same look. Just wish it had the front/rear facing seats like r68.
@@42luke93 The R62AS R62S reminds me of the old smee cars like the R16/17s R21/22s R12/14/15s . Now the R142/as reminds me of the old Redbird s because the R142/as has the old Redbird design s . It would have been nice if the MTA would have kept that same design inside and out of A onto what we have now I the first time I rode it was from 207 all the way to the rockaways and I love that I still had my window seat the whole time and window seating I miss very much. The front I love it's i don't know but I love it. Now let's see how the r211 holds up my grip is the bench seating and tiny windows now you really staring in someone's face🤨
and THEY are still doing that ridiculous thing with he pole in the middle of the seats. That pole wastes so many seats, I see it all the time. R32 was never like that. But yes I like the R110b seating better for the window/forward facing seats
They actually ran trains with staggered doors in service? I remember reading that this layout would be better, but didn't know it had been tried in operation! Did it work as hoped for? As far as I know no subway has cars with staggered doors at present, so I guess the benefits don't seem to be worth the added difficulty of construction?

Goodafternoon Champ🏆!! That was a great video 🎥 about the Test Tec Trains. I had a chance to ride on the R-110B's on the C train in the late 1990's back in the day's when i was in my mailroom /outdoor messenger training . Back then I had a view on how the future of NYC Subway trains of tomorrow. The R-110 A/B where test fleets for R-142 A/B R-143 R-160 A/B and R-179's wow now that's alot Offspring just from them R-110 A/B's . Besafe champ 🏆!!! But R-110 B had special seats 💺double and single just like Buses 🚌 . Both R-110 A/B's had came with maps and Atuo intercom systems. they ahead of there time ⏳ Champ 🏆

Ain’t the BMT Standard D types technically the first subway cars with open gangways?
I thought I had imagined seeing these as a child.
YOOOOOO. I GOT MY VID IN MYSTIC'S VID.
lol
5th comment, also "Wow. That rhymed, well, that was unintentional." Mystic Transit-May 3rd,2022
lol. I guess we know that you got to the end of the video.
The R40s were actually like modern trains because of the breaking and accelerating speeds being fast to break or moving
Why did one explode? Why did no one say why???? A train EXPLODED and all I can find of it are off handed mentions of it, like Yada yada yada It entered service and then one exploded and caught fire yada etc etc WTF!?!?!?!?!?
Too Bad I Wasn’t Able To Ride The NTT’s I’m from Canada not the USA, nice Vid btw
It was a Taipei Metro C301 which had Westinghouse propulsion. Taipei Metro C371 use Mitsubishi propulsion.
I like New York City subway
I think that MTA plans to use theses trains on special events,
You know thoses special days were a bunch of old retired trains come back to service and then get retired after two days? so something like that
0:10 - The most iconic announcement in the whole of the system
For the trains I have created on BNS (Brand New Subway), I voiced some of the announcements
Charlie Pellet is your guys' Frank Oglesby.
i like when you do these types of videos :)
I'm glad that you do.
Capital Plan. Not replacing the rail fleet is NOT an option.
The government FTC, subsidizes these tech upgrades. They want to bring the TA into the 21st Century!🤔😂🤣
The MBTA tacked onto the R110B order for their red line and ran them for close to 30 years. They’re being replaced by the new CRRC fleet renewal order.
Why lord? Why?
Idk if you'd be interested, but I think it'd be cool if you did a video on the former NYC Transit Police/Staten Island Railroad Police/current NYPD Transit division/MTA Police and maybe the history. Great vids tho man. 👍
I'll definitely consider it.
LoL... practice what you preach is good practice.
Great vid dude..
Appreciate it!
The R110As are Still here, 6 of its cars just became pump trains a few years ago
very good video. The R110As are better than the R110Bs in my opinion.
Wow
They should put one of each car in the NYCTA Museum and run them on an annual special
noice history! This is fantastic!
i have a suggestion, the r110b cars for the franklin ave shuttle and extend the platorms there so there be less dwell times there.
I'd just extend the platforms and run 4/5-car R160s on it.
@@MysticTransitthe Franklin Avenue shuttle doesn’t need longer trains
The R110A looks so weird.
Great essay
Idk why but I kinda like SMEEs more.
Could you do the R-62/R-62A/R62B & R-68/R68A? They were the last SMEE classes until the New Technology Trains for both divisions.
Don't forget we have the brand new R262/as coming soon to replace all the R62AS R62S on the 1 3 6 S lines for CBTCS. We know that the R211as is here for a test trains 🚃.
@@leecornwell5632 The R-262 won't happen for a few years, while the R-211 is taking shape.
r62 is my favorite.
Did the r16/17 have the front facing seats like the r110a?
I remember these test trains in the 90s......lol
cool
whenever i think of the R110A i think of like the grandfather of the R142/As
I saw one of them in a yard nearby my middle school all alone

These are smart trains
2 years ago, this was uploaded
When is the next least used station video dropping
Now we'll only be 30 years behind the world.
If I remember right, they were all scrapped, or will be scrapped.
2:42 you could see in the window reflection next to a back the woman who's wearing a hat you could see cocomelon on the board in the reflection

Where are modern trains for NYC subway?
All the cars built after 1999 (R142 and later models) are modern trains for the NYC Subway

The 142B cars and up have provision for car body (passenger compartment) cameras, monitored by the conductor.
Bro I seen this train near 86 street
If these trains never existed the r142 r142/a r188 r143 r160 r179 and r211 would have never existed

They wouldn’t have announcements tho

They actually ran trains with staggered doors in service? I remember reading that this layout would be better, but didn't know it had been tried in operation! Did it work as hoped for? As far as I know no subway has cars with staggered doors at present, so I guess the benefits don't seem to be worth the added difficulty of construction?
All of the NTT A-Division subway cars have staggered doors. Also, to my knowledge, there isn't any difficulty in making it that way.
Rule number one: never, EVVVVVEEEEERRRRRRR, in God’s green earth, get any information from Wikipedia. They always changing the info themselves
Wow! Cant believe how bad the film looks being that it is from the late 90s
Doors were huuuuuggge
They plan to make the doors wider! It would make boarding and detraing easier and quicker.
