I have a 2006 pro team 170TX that I bought new that had a 40hp Bigfoot motor, after break in I took and found a 60hp Bigfoot ECM and replaced the 40hp ECM with the 60hp ECM and removed a restriction ring that's in the intake and turned my 40hp into a 60hp, I also installed Mercury's vessel view and it offers so much more information than the gauges that come installed on the dash, I now have a little over 100 hour's on my motor and have not had any problems at all with it and would recommend it to anyone, the ECM upgrade was cheap and the 20hp difference is huge and for what it cost to do it was definitely cheaper than having to buy a bigger motor, the next upgrade I plan on is a jackplate, that will cost more than the ECM upgrade and vessel view I put on, anyone that has the 1 liter 4 cylinder that is 40 or 50hp can do the ECM upgrade to a 60hp fairly cheap, it only cost me $400 for the ECM and I got $100 back when I sent my 40hp ECM back to the seller, the vessel view was $150 on Amazon and I went with a Solas stainless steel 3 blade prop.
@@clearwaterfishing I got it off of a seller on Facebook, as soon as i can find his name i will put it up here, I also ended up replacing my fuel line, primer bulb and fuel filter, now it run's perfectly.
I also have this engine on my boat. With the spitfire prop you don’t need the fin on the motor. Take it off and you will gain top end speed and fuel economy.
I ran the hydrofoil test on mine several times, both on and off (but I use an SE400 foil) during the same day and same conditions. I found a drop of anywhere between 1 - 1.5 MPH without it, I also found cruise prior to dropping off plane was as low as 18 MPH with it compared to 22 MPH to so it's worth leaving on even if you have a 4 blader.
Have you had any more problems with your fuel pump how many hours do you have total now I ordered an extra fuel pump just in case the problem happens again for me
@@swhite3847 it was a 10year old motor with about 100 hours. I have not had any more issues with it. I’m not sure if it was a defect, age, or something else.
Have you ever heard of anyone owning a 2017 60 horsepower mercury 4 stroke engine where the driveshaft sheard at the crankshaft. It happened of course 1 year passed the warranty but wondering if others have had this happen to them?
Man that’s tough because this is the highest hp in this displacement. I’m sure you can get a tuned ECM, but you will have to reprop as well to get the speed.
I have the same engine but I haven’t change the spark plugs yet can you do a video showing you how to do that and what tools to use, do you need special angled tools?
Hi, great info.. I'm missing all the linkage parts. would you be willing to share some photos of the throttle and shift linkage on the motor, under the cowling..? Thanks John
I am looking into getting a newish motor for my old boston whaler. I found a 2006 25hp mercury, do you think this is a reliable engine or would you recommend paying the extra grand for a Yamaha?
Great video; I saved the video you made of the fluid change when it’s time for my 20 hr initial fluid change. Just got the 2021 Mako Skiff 15 with the 60hp #Getoutthehousegofish
I had it for a little while and I thought it was causing my motor to throw faults. Turns out it was a loose connection. It was pretty nice while I had it.
Typically a 4 blade prop will provide more “grab” on the water which is a benefit for a pontoon boat. You will sacrifice some speed for a better hole shot and holding power.
So out of curiosity, that main harness connector, what's the deal with it? Does it come loose or something? I am having issues at plane with my 60, and I'm not sure if it's an impeller/ thermostat housing clogging issue or if the issue is electrical. I have no way to check for codes, but I get one beep from the alarm when it happens and it forces me to slow to idle, today it happened several times, but after I slowed down to idle and throttled back up, it picked up speed as usual. I thought I heard the beeping a few times but I didn't count how many times it did it. Any insights?
So the harness connector has one side that has pins. Those pins aren't fixed in the connector. The connector is supposed to clam to the wire harness. When the connector isn't clammed well to the wire harness the pins can retract into the connector a bit. This will cause a poor connection and weird stuff to happen. Mine would alarm and take me to idle. I had a mercury vessel view at the time and the code didn't make sense to me. I don't remember what it was. I thought it was the vessel view so I removed it. (it wasn't) So I started digging into the harness and found the connector was loose on the wire. I pushed it the connector down the wire taped the crap out of it and haven't had a problem since. If you need more help, let me know and maybe I can talk you through it.
@@clearwaterfishing I'll have to check into it but I'm pretty sure its a water inlet ingesting gunk deal, because the waters in my area lately have been absolutely horrid with topwater weeds and the issues always happen after I pass through multiple sets of those.
Hey James, great informational video! I believe I might have a fuel pump problem in my 2012 Mercury 60... I noticed it stalls out shortly after acceleration. If I keep it at lower RPMs it seems to be ok but as soon as I accelerate it doesn’t take long to stall/die. After it stalls I can usually start it right back up just seems to be a problem maintaining at higher RPMs. Have you ever dealt with an issue like this? Thank you!
xeqshunner That’s the same thing mine was doing. The low pressure fuel pump went out on me. check out this video. ruclips.net/video/YIjAC0JT-70/видео.html
xeqshunner My local dealer is a Mercury dealer and I took the fuel pump and my engine’s serial number to him. They looked it up with the serial number and I verified it with the old one in the store. It gonna cost you about $150. I recommend finding you local boat dealer and make sure they sell Mercury. Ask them. They should help you out.
