When I watched this movie with my girlfriend, this was the line that broke me, man. It felt like all the sadness I'd been through living with a pessimistic mother that constantly seemed to drain my own hope when it came to my struggles with mental health, it felt like that struggle was valid all along.

This movie changed my life. I used to be a very angry person because of what I have been and gone through in life. I always thought that since life is really a bitch, you survive by being equally cruel. I used to think that my anger and hate gives me motivation and for a while it really does. But it hurts me also as much as it does the other person. So I embarked on a journey to learn to tame my anger and respond with kindess. When people are unkind to you, you have to tell yourself that you do not want to be as hateful as they are.

In the face of cruelty, hatred, misery, pain, and a universe that doesn’t care what happens to us, it’s easy to fall into a trap of thinking pessimistic nihilism is the way to go, that it’s the “mature”, “intelligent”, and “realistic” option cause that’s what the world has trained you think is reality. But that mindset really gets you nowhere, besides treating people with hope and optimism as stupid and naive children. The truth is, people get stuck on that level of realization and stay there, taking pride in their “intelligence” as a way to cope with a deep-seated misery and pain. When in reality, when you take time to recognize acts of kindness, love, and empathy, when you realize you have only focused on the bad in life, and when you see that putting goodness into the world, even when the bad seems overwhelming and will repeatedly beat you down, you can shine a light in the darkness that, even if dim, will warm yourself and those around you and can inspire them to shine their own lights. That, is real maturity in my book. You can choose to spend the hat time you have before oblivion sulking in the darkness, or unleashing goodness.

This is the kind of thinking that got me through the worst parts of my life. I always felt stupid, and naive for thinking too positively and it made me feel lesser than anyone else. I don’t think I’ve ever cried as much as when I heard these lines. I felt validated, and that I was doing the right thing, and it felt like all the effort up to this point wasn’t for nothing. I know my purpose in this world. There’s so much shit going on everywhere around us, and I’d rather spread kindness and show people that it’s not all bad.
