I grew up near there. The dams were built in the 1880's to impound water that was piped all the way to Columbus for the citizens to use. My understanding is that forced labor (convicts) were used. We swam, fished, and explored up and down the creek growing up. In the heat of the summer, we would stand under the falls for a warm shower.
I posted this in response to your FaceBook post asking about this Dam. As well as a copy from a Columbus Enquirer Article from 1882. From History of Opelika, by Rev. F. L. Cherry Such was the testimony of his contemporaries. In connection with Mr. Dodge Maj. Holland built the First saw and grist mill ever erected on Marshall's creek, and furnished a vast amount of lumber for the early growth of Columbus, the most of which has since been destroyed by fire. Flis mill pond in those days, had the reputation of affording the finest sport in "still-water" fishing and was the most attractive and. frequently visited picnic ground on the "Alabama side" for miles around. The older citizens of Columbus will remember these occasions of rural recreation and pleasure, as among the happiest of their boy and girl life of forty years ago. It is just below the fountain-heads of this creek that the reservoir is built, known as the Columbus Water Works which is destined, in the near future, to become, in addition to its great utility, one of the most attractive spots in the State. And it is here that the youth and maidens of today and the generations to come, will repeat the pastimes of the old, olden time, enjoyed by their ancestors beneath the wild willow boughs on the grapy banks of the old mill-pond a few miles below, a few generations ago. This work of utility, art, and beauty, was built under contract with the city of Columbus by Col. J. T. Holland, the only survivingson of the subject of this chapter, of which and of whom I design devoting an entire chapter, on reaching Browneville of today.
Beautiful. Would be hard to leave. Sometimes man builds something that seems to fit well with nature. I think God would approve of this one. Thanks for taking us there.
Simply Fabulous scenery!! Would love to camp by here. I love caves too!! Watch them leaks Robert! Can you say...I don’t know how to swim? I mean I don’t ...lol..we had a fruit farm..not near close enough to the farm and we were always out working it, right along with the parents, no time to play to far from the farm house. It was a great life..somewhat hard, but wouldn’t change a thing!
How amazing nature can claim back what we humans constructed in so less time. Love your series, I just discovered it and watch all episodes non stop now to catch up :)
From a UK subscriber, thankyou. This is quite a divergance from others I've viewed on your channel and even though the dam is now a ruin, it's a very picturesque one Your videos are always informative and offered in a calm American voice that would serve well on TV; The BBC would love you! I knew nothing of slave cemeteries until I became a subscriber, we have none over here I'm aware of (we have unremarked plague pits, & plenty of them) It would be cool to see you make a special video on The Cross Bones graveyard of central London... Keep up the good work. ☺️
My ancestors were from Pickens Georgia and were Part Cherokee. I know there was once a lot of Native American History in Georgia. Would love to hear and see you do some about that.
Cody kind of reminds me of my 15 year old Eagle Scout grandson, however, he is very talkative and active but they both love nature. My Will would have his own spinoff channel and leading the troup like he leads his Scout patrol. I alerted him of this channel since he is an outdoorsman also.
I found you a couple of days ago and Have watched almost all of you videos. I so want to go magnet fishing. I love to fish, but that seems to be so much fun. Thanks for the videos am really enjoying them as I live in Ga. also and am always happy to see places I haven't found myself.
That’s pretty cool! It looks a lot like the old dam on the Yellow River where I grew up in Conyers. It still had the old crank on it. Had a rope on the top of the damn we would swing from into the water..walked across the dam…slid down the rocks below the dam.
I just recently found your channel and have been loving it! It would have been nice if you had found out more about this dam. That poor old snapping turtle didn't look amused! Haha! Stay safe and healthy out there! Thank you for sharing a part of your day with us!
That is a beautiful dam! Do you ever plan to come out West and do a Western Adventure Series? Colorado is full of exciting history. Old mines, plenty of old cemeteries, just lots of cool things. It would definitely be a cool adventure!
Yes it is! Reminds me of a setting from O Brother Where Art Thou... Also, this was the last warm day we had for a while... it’s been rainy and icky out.
Love every adventure of Sidestep Adventures ❣🥰❣ I'm from Kansas and I used to ride my horse for miles down in the old road in the "slough" and Missouri river. It was SOOOOOOOOOO cool! I miss those days! I was just in my teens. I'm 70 now.🥺😪
@@kathleendouglas7300 I would do the same if I lived in such rich in history area, gosh those guys awaken the explorer in me. I remember one day here in Iceland visiting an abandoned farm (indeed during a horseriding trip haha), such an exciting experience! But also bit scary, because everything was falling apart and some chicken or other birds inhabited the farm now, every move they made freaked us out either with their movement or by having things falling down when they flew up/out haha
That was absolutely beautiful and peaceful place...thank you. Got excited when I saw thumb nail....thought yea they came to Lawrenceville to Freeman's mill, but alas it wasn't. You should check into it....only thing is one side you enjoy as a park, the mill etc....but the opposite side of water, well it's beautifully wooded but no trespassing which is a total shame 🤨
I thought you would at least give us a look of the pond-lake or whatever was behind the DAM. You climbed to the top, but all I saw about10 feet of water.
The leftover bits in the big square hole above the fire valve looks to be what was probably an old water ram, designed to work with natural water force to pump water up hills and/or some distance from the source. If the reservoir was being utilized by the fire department, there is a very good chance it was also being used at some point for domestic (drinking) water purposes as well.
Thanks! I don’t plan to! I have heard Reddit is a good place to promote videos but I have never posted on there. I’m not even sure how it works to be honest...
I see water, I’m usually in it if it’s above 70 degrees. I’ve got to get out there. My family was in Georgia during the War Between the States. When the CSA surrendered they went to New Orleans. The father died there from wounds that never healed right. His wife and 6 kids came to Texas on a cattle boat. Then moved to weatherford area.
lol I read boats for some reason. I didn’t realize you said boots. I’ve got several good pairs of boots for doing this. I don’t remember what I was wearing on this video.
@@AdventuresIntoHistory Lol an easy mistake as they look very similar. I am just going through and watching all the video's before I subscribed to you. x
Wow. That was so interesting. Just curious tho if any of you guys has ever had any accidents on any of your adventures... such as falling or getting hurt in some way. Some of those shots looked scary. I really enjoy watching you guys and love how you end most videos... with a little wink 😉. So cute!
In my younger days working in industrial maintenance and construction, we used these fittings for pumping grout when setting equipment. Also, pumped sealant in large steam flanges while operating. So, I suspect these were used in a wall repair for pumping grout between the stone.
Looks like a stilling basin, to slow, not necessarily hold back water. On either side it looks like sluices with the right side maybe where a mill once stood.

Also, this was the last warm day we had for a while... it’s been rainy and icky out.
There’s a small dam on Lindsey Creek on the Columbus State University campus. My dad said it was a dairy farm years before the college was built
Oh WOW! LOOOVVE THIS PLACE !! What is it called and where is it located ?
The lake doesn't show up on a 1909 map of the area but shows up on a 1955 map so the dam was built after 1909 so not too terribly old.

That steel part behind the hydrant valve looked like a turbine that would spin when the hydrant valve is opened. Or it could have been a flow meter.
New to the channel but that dam is pretty impressive! Keep up the great work!
Thanks!
I thought you would at least give us a look of the pond-lake or whatever was behind the DAM. You climbed to the top, but all I saw about10 feet of water.
It didnt look like that was quite possible.
So wonderful to see this.♡
The most likely reason the dam was there was because there may have been a Mill there at one time possibly a Grist Mill that relied on water power
My exact thoughts!
That’s what I was thinking too....
Kinda figured that.
Impoundment for drinking water for Columbus.
The sign, if there was one, No Climbing On The Damn!🤣👍
Would be nice to know the history ie name ect if and about the dam. Thanks for the video!
So beautiful!!!

TO ME A BEAUTIFUL WATERFALL.
That was very interesting.
Those are grease fittings to keep the damn from leaking g
Curious, do you Geocache? Seems you were seeking a 'find' within those vines :-) Great explore
Nice explore! I'd like to know the history if you ever find it.
I’ll pin a comment here when I do
That’s beautiful
He looks like a miniature version of the turtle from never ending story!
Beautiful beautiful place
I think the nozzels are for injecting a special epoxy under high pressure to deal with leaks that would otherwise get worse. They still do it today.
Amazing! And the dam is cool!
The "bleeder valves" look more like grease fittings to pump it full of grease to keep hydraulic pressure in a crumbling stone.
In my younger days working in industrial maintenance and construction, we used these fittings for pumping grout when setting equipment.
Also, pumped sealant in large steam flanges while operating.
So, I suspect these were used in a wall repair for pumping grout between the stone.

9:40 That's a grease zerk to lubricate the dam in order to eliminate friction. ;)
Super nice overall !!!!!
