I'm a life long local and I love it here. I lived in Central VA for about 7 years, and I missed VB so much I had to come back. For me, the attraction of the city IS the suburban nature of it. And each suburb is like it's own little village with a personality and community. Not every one wants to live in the middle of a retail zone. It's loud and congested and generally has higher crime associated with living there. I lived in Shadowlawn in the 90s for almost 10 years and it was fantastic, but where I lived went more rental and it turned into a party zone. People move to the suburbs to escape the party zone, which is what the oceanfront is. 20 years ago, I loved the Oceanfront in the winter. The quiet nature of a winter beach paired with a cozy local hangout was something I looked forward to every year. Unfortunately, all the old places with character have been replaced with trendy type of places. Even Mahi Mahs is not the same anymore. It broke my heart when the city ripped out the old Heritage Store and Jewish Mother. (Now the Raven is gone, too.) Yeah, they were shabby and old, but they had character. They were Classic VB. Now it's a bunch of vapid chains with over priced condos. If people want the walkable lifestyle, Ghent is well suited to that mindset. I have a friend who purchased an older home off Stockley Gardens and they absolutely love it for the village lifestyle. Her husband walks to work at the hospital and she can do most errands by walking to the grocery store or coffee shop. I think people should find the place that suits their taste and needs instead of trying to make other places conform to their wants. Locals accept the jets because those are literally our friends and neighbors either flying the jets or supporting the flight crews. It's personal, not inconvenience. I live right by the base, and while I would not want to live at the end of a runway, I found I missed the jets and air traffic when I was away from them. Our city is a beautiful mix of conveniences and agriculture. It's clean and it's safe. When people progress past the party lifestyle and begin to have families, these things become important. We have farm stands all over the city selling local produce and regional produce from other small farms. I would much rather see the city put money into supporting the Southern agricultural zones than into the tourism of the Oceanfront. But then I prefer farms over concerts any day of the week. Which is why I live where I do. Sports teams don't fly here because of the transient nature of the area. People come and go constantly. Many because of military assignment changes or because younger people grow frustrated with living in the area. It has serious limitations in a lot of ways. Mostly driven by the transient nature, and frankly having an economy dominated on tourism which is also based on transience. It's far from a perfect place to live, but it does offer a great lifestyle for people who are looking for things other than party living. A larger city is going to satisfy that type of personality much better. My opinion, of course.

I moved from South Jersey to Va Beach in 1993. I was shell shocked back then not being able to find good Pizza and Hoagies ! Little by little people from NY and NJ moved down here and opened Great Pizza and Sub Shops !! I've primarily lived in the Kings Grant, Oceanfront and Hilltop area! To be honest, I Love the Jet Noise ! It doesn't go on all day, really only when they are coming in to Oceana to land. Years ago when the market crashed I went home to NJ, only to see ghost towns of what was once a thriving place. Coming back to Virginia Beach, nothing much had changed. It was almost like that crash avoided this area, And that is because of our Military. So without them, we could never have all that we do ! Jobs, Security ect... is because of Jet Noise ! It's a damn Beautiful thing we are so Lucky to be able to see these Brave People who Protect Us !!
You moved to VB back in '93, things were different then and wonder how it compares now. Been to most Mid Atlantic shore towns and do want to check out VB again. However, my favorites actually are in Southern New Jersey, where most people from my area (MD) don't even consider it an option. Makes me love it even more.
I moved to VB in early '94 from NYS and couldn't believe the grocery store didn't carry mozzarella cheese.
These are very valid except the jet noise. I live relatively close to fort story and it's not bad, it's loud but not super common. I guess some people may find that more irritating than others. You really nailed it with everything else though, especially the sports team damn hoping that changes soon

Humidity is from Florida to New York--nothing surprising about that in vb. Those low housing prices are awesome.
Yep it’s definitely a relative thing for many moving from other markets, most of our client moving from larger market think prices are below normal or great and locals tend to think it’s too much

I lived there in the 80's as a young sailor and have been back twice recently. The jet noise, I like it, reminds me of the past. Housing cost is rising everywhere but yes, more in this area. Oh, I wish I would of purchased a small home I rented in the 80's close to the strip. It is worth alot now. The only two things are really a combination of one is the traffic caused by the tourist. Living there was difficult with the tourist and now I see you can't really park anywhere near the strip without a permit in your car or pay for parking without being towed. I usually go to Damneck Base to the beach to avoid the tourist. The amount of people in the area has increased alot over the years. I am a realtor as well having retired from the Navy and the possibilities of the business you would have there as a realtor. But just like everywhere else, there are tons of realtors in the major areas. I may visit Va Beach one more time. If not, it is a place I will keep close to my heart.
I used to live in Virginia and would go there multiple times a year. We found it a lot of fun and enjoyed that the beaches were not super busy in late summer/early fall. We also did not mind the jets. There's also a lot of history on the way there from DC area.

Funny thing. I’ve come across a few separate times, where people from New York City say how friendly Virginia Beach is.
I fell in love with VA Beach when I was stationed in Norfolk from 81 to 85. I try to visit every 3 or 4 years in the off season in October. I actually love hearing those aircraft taking off and landing from Oceana! Hey if you want humidity come to SE MI in the Summer! LOL
All these bad things about the city are exactly the same in Charleston, SC except Jet Noise! One thing worse here in Charleston, SC is the the summer heat and humidity, it's worse than Florida.Thanks for the review, I was born in Va.Beach and visit often.

It's a fact that the HR metro is the largest metro in the country without a major league sports team. They did put in a bid for an NHL team in the 90's but lost out.

Thanks, but no thanks! I'm a long time VB and Chesapeake resident, off and on, from the 1960s to just recently. My grandparents had a house on Rudee Inlet and I spent many a wonderful summer living there with my cousins and walking to The Beach. Hampton Roads, and in particular VB, has changed so much over the decades from a slow paced, fun and safe locals place to live to a tourist driven, business centric (hell with the locals), heavy traffic, and increased crime city. VB now reminds me of the Jersey Shore! If you're looking for pristine white sand beaches with diverse size beach towns and cities go look at the Florida Panhandle.

I'd say walkability starts at hilltop. I have access to literally everything from my front door and my bike ride to the oceanfront is 15 min or less. Especially since Laskin and VB blvd lead to the oceanfront 🤷🏽♀️ I don't see grocery stores in the vibe district thought they do have the best entertainment in walking distance.

I worked at an Airport. After a while you don't even hear the aircrafts. Just becomes white noise
I can't even watch this whole broadcast. I grew up here. I love it here. You can't escape Jet Noise, in some locations, so go to another part of VB. This area is one of the Safest Areas in the World to live in!!! Edgar Cayce was right!!!

This doesn't drive me away from the area. In fact I would take Va beach over the cities I am looking at in Florida.

I’ve lived in VB since I was about 2. I’d say these cons are spot on. CANT EMPHASIZE ENOUGH ABOUT THE HUMIDITY THOUGH!!! If y’all have never experienced it just think about breathing in oat meal for most of your summer 😂😂😂

I did not feel that way when I was in High school, but I moved away for school, came back ten years later to ppl who honk the horn every time you stop anywhere, extremely Rude & such A**holes, way to expensive, way to much crime, it’s all bad!!! I miss what this place used to be. Loving and kind. Not anymore smh

Hate to say this but these are none of the reasons why people don't like living there or are leaving. One is the jobs don't pay anything compared to other states. How can you pay your mortgage or rent if you're making barely any money & that includes professional & factory jobs as well & then there's the recent shootings on the boardwalk they had. But sorry most of those reason's you listed were definitely not it!!!!

So it would be best if you moved to another city. I love it here; it is such a beautiful city; the jets don't bother me. You have the oceanfront and the boardwalk. The town is charming, calm, quiet, and there is no violence. I live in Greenbrier, it is so good here and the city has a lot of attractions such as rock shows, in this Summer we got Janet Jackson, Bon Jovi, offspring, foo Fighters, Nickelback, Brantley Gilbert, Josh Ross, Go Go Dolls, 50cent, 1000candle light concert, Aladin, hockey games, baseball, and football college games, I think I live in a different city and I prefer My Virginia Beach. Blessings.

Graduating from college in May and I am looking for a different city to move to. I hate living in Florida... Looking for a medium-sized city. I rather hear Jet noises than gunshots. 🤣

Can’t wait to move away. Way too expensive and wayyyy too many people crammed into what little real estate there is.
I’m considering moving here pending a job change but am worried about the military presence. I once lived in Dayton and worked at Wright-Patterson, which essentially controls the town. It was probably the worse experience of my life and nearly ruined my career. It was very cult-like, weird, provincial, and redneck. Fortunately, this time around I wouldn’t be working at DOD, but I’m scared of getting into that type of environment again and am wondering if the experience in Dayton was a one-off thing or if this is typical for any town with a large DOD presence. I would be working in DC and commuting one day each week while working at home for the rest. I considered Virginia Beach because my husband (we’re gay) is retired and wanted to live in a beach location in retirement, and the real estate market from what we’ve seen appears to be too competitive for us all the way down to a Richmond. Any advice is appreciated.

We are in California (Silicon Valley), and we are ready to go. The crime and homelessness is out of control. Virginia Beach looks very nice. We visited Miami in December. It's beautiful, but traffic is just as horrendous as here, and the road rage in Florida is WAY worse than California. We saw so many crazy drivers, and the constant horn honking drove us nuts! Also, I did not like how generic the condos looked. They looked so plain, and HOA's very high. We don't have humidity here at all. I would be concerned about the humidity in Virginia, but the prices are amazing.

I have a couple cans to add as well, and I am aware that some people may not consider these cons. One is the suburban nature of the city. Most neighborhoods in VB have cookie cutter houses, and if there is anything within walking distance, it's probably a strip mall with a craft shop, a good will, and maby a grocery store, or it's a 7-Eleven, or a fast food joint. The cartoon Ed, Ed, and Eddy; is a painfully accurate description of many VB neighborhoods. Another con in my opinion is hard to explain, but there is a disconnect between the city, and the people living there. Living there can give you the feeling that your small, and insignificant, and if there is something that you don't like, there's nothing you can do to change it. The best way I can describe it( if norfolk, and Virginia beach wanted to add a bike lane, Virginia Beach would hire experts to preform a study, and would follow the advice of those experts, where as Norfolk may also hire experts to do a study, but they are more likely to put out a survey asking the opinion of everyone in the community. Maby Virginia beach puts out surveys as well, but if so, they don't advertise them very well. I think it's do to a difference in mind set. People in Virginia Beach are more concerned about what is happening on, and around there property, while people in norfolk are more concerned about what is going on in the city as a whole. Just my observation.

I’ve never liked to boardwalk being all cement. I thought it presumptive of the developers to think that’s what people like under their feet 24/7. Observe the difference in the state to state webcams between the number of people who prefer to actually walk on them vs those cams in the states who don’t. I feel a little trapped in VB and made to prefer the beach SAND because even it is easier to walk on.
