  • There are nearly 6,542 satellites orbiting the Earth as of January 1, 2021. Out of which 3,372 satellites are active, and 3,170 satellites are inactive. As reported in the Index of Objects Launched into Outer Space, issued by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), there were 7,389 individual satellites in Space at the end of April 2021.

@@markpayne2217 It's because they are so small, like trying to capture an image of an ant from the sky. It is strange how we don't have footage of actual satellites but you can find many videos of the launches of the rockets that took them up there. This video did a terrible representation of satellites, I mean they really made it seem as if satellites were very very large. But the only station we can see with the naked eye is the ISS since it is closer to Earth and larger than most satellites. Also, there isn't exactly a need for footage of satellites, but again even if we try to get footage of satellites in space right now, it is going to be very hard as the size of them is way too small.

Crazy we have a ring around our planet made entirely by satellites. My Uncle used to work at NORAD and was in charge of tracking all of the space junk, and told me that the junk is way more dangerous than the satellites for space missions as a lot of that said junk is about the size of a fist and is moving way to fast to intercept or clean up.

This comment section is really alarming at how so many people don’t understand basic 5th grade physics/space distances/ sizes. Yes this is cgi, to give you an understanding / visual idea of how many are out there would look like of you could see them. You can’t see cars on the ground from 30k feet. And people expect to see car / bus size satellites from hundreds / thousands of miles away.

Very poor representation. Your animation depicting the “swarm” of satellites around the Earth makes it seem as though it’s crowded up there and provides fuel to the ignorant simps that promote flat Earth nonsense. Your animation is completely out of scale. Consider that here in Louisiana there are 1.4 MILLION vehicles registered. Louisiana is a very small part of the Earth wiring more than 200 times as many vehicles as there are satellites orbiting earth. These 1.4 million vehicles spread across the surface of the entire Earth would not look at all as crowded as you make orbital space appear to be, and since most satellites are at 200 miles or so above the Earth that represents a considerably larger sphere than the surface of the Earth. 7000 satellites orbiting in that large of a plane is not crowded. Assuming an average low orbital height of 200 miles, if all of the satellites were orbiting at the same altitude there would be about 1 satellite within every 31,000 square miles.

Satellites orbit at all kinds of varying distances from Earth, so most of the ~7000 satellites have zero chance of interacting with one another simply due to their orbits never crossing. Not to mention the graphics in this video greatly exaggerate the size of satellites so it's easier to get a visualization of how many there are. In reality satellites are quite tiny relative to the area of space around Earth that they orbit, so it's likely a very rare or even non-existent scenario for two satellites to have anything close to a near-miss or collide with one another, even if they orbit at the exact same distance from Earth.

@@DS-nv2ni yes....really. Not every single one of them. But there are many visible satellites. You just have to know when and where to look. There are internet sites where you just plug in where you are on Earth, and it will spit out a list of satellites that will be visible to you in the upcoming days - and where they will be. And they are there. It's not a big conspiracy.
The best time to view them is around dusk - - where you are in darkness, but satellites thousands of miles high are still in sunlight.
They're up there. Literally visible to the naked eye.
