20 plus years ago I played with the 6.1 , 4 5/8", Prince Synthetic Gut at 62 lbs, and with Tourna Grip wrap. Greatest frame ever. Yes it will give you Tennis Elbow. My right arm wasn't right for several years after I stopped playing tournaments. In my experience that frame gives you control and the power when you need it. I still have four of them in my bag still but it's been quite some time since I've picked them up. Nice review man.
I used the Wilson aggressor in the 80's. 365g Strung... Playd 4 hours a day, never had tennis elbow. This year I tried Babolat pure aero for one month, and now my arms hurt like a b... So I swich back to The aggressor, and man, it's a dream!
That my friend is 100% saint Vincent, the stickers changed on the frame on the late China racquets and the 0 on the buttcap would be a Q, loving your videos:)
I am currently playing with a Wilson classic pro staff (stretch) 6.1 and have had this racket since 1996. I recently purchased a Wilson Clash and love how it plays. I love them both!
I don't know about you but all these classic frames are right up my baseline. I've been using various forms of the Slazenger Tim Henman series, from the TW reissued "harlequin" , the Trinity ( black /sliver/gold ), the Xpro 1 and the Quad Flex 305. Kinda sad that Wilson did away with the 95 sq inch head rackets . Love the content, keep it up
Love this episode! You could do a entire episode just on the various iterations of the Pro Staff Classic 6.1, the Hyper, (K)Factor ones and the couple of the Six.One releases.
Sampras used to add more weight to his rackets with a lot of lead at 3 and 9. His rackets were strung between 70-74lbs depending on which surface he was playing on.
Thanks for the review! Have been subscribing your channel since it’s below 1000 subscribers & loving the content very much! Great content for the average tennis fans!
Congrats on the channel, glad to see it's doing well. But I will say I'm disappointed you didn't include the best Pro Staff of them all in this video, the 4.2si. And I can say that cause you know I switch back and forth between all 4 (6.0, 6.1, 4.2 and RF97) regularly. That right there should tell you who is posting this ;). Anyway, common man, you know the 4.2 the best of the classics. I can understand not including it since they're impossible to get a hold of but you could've at least mentioned it. Next time I'm in town I'm bringing some up and we're doing an update to this.
I have the classic 6.1 prostaff and a classic Midsize Wilson Pro Comp. They are fun for ball striking and I have a great time practicing with those sticks. I have been really liking the Pro Staff Steffi Graf 7.5 which fell into my lap last year on a offer I could not refuse. I am playing well with it in doubles games.
I have the RF97 and my old PS95 6.1 from 90s, and to be honest the PS95 is much easier to use than the RF97. Feels lighter and more maneuverable in every way, even though it’s actually overall heavier. I’m always late with the RF97, but never with the PS95, so I’m selling the RF97 because I feel it is inferior and I like a thinner beam.
Awesome breakdown! Thank you so much for answering my request. I love the Pro Staff lineup. I play with a 2014 PS 90. The last 90 Wilson made before Fed switched to the 97. I also have a couple PS 85's I hit with occasionally. You can't beat the feel of either of them. I might check out the PS 97 based on your feedback. Cheers! 🍻👍
I still have a PS 6.1 95 classic and a PS 6.1 95 Stretch from the 90s. Love those racquets, but they really are quite heavy. Need to be in really good shape to be able to handle those for a long time.
Very interesting topic. Yup agree with most here. All my RF97 weigh 361 or 362g fully loaded with overgrip and damper. Even the PS85 seems a bit light. Mine weighs 370g !! PS 6.1 Classic is the toughest to play with to me. It's the stiffest and the sweet spot is a bit lower than the other PS. Also too head light. I add 2 pieces of lead weighing 2g each at 3 and 9 o'clock or just above the PWS to make it more playable.
My tennis coach back in those days said that its best to used a racquet that's heavy in the handle. Because it give you more control when you're at net. When you're at the baseline you should be able to generate your own power. A light head makes you able to volley with precision when you attack the net.
I used to like the heavy RF frame but now I use the regular PS but sometimes have to add lead tape. I used the clash tour for a while and there were things I liked about it but ultimately I liked the pro staff a little better.
Your last video of the standard RF97 weighed 360g with over grip, how on earth did this one weighed in at 347.5g. Over grip is around 3-5g, so that’s near 10g difference!! Wilson QC is so bad!! No wonder my mate said his RF97 didn’t feel that heavy.
Mr Spin if the Pro Staff 85 says BXQ that is the 5th and final version fabricated in St. Vincent, thereafter they started to manufacture them in Taiwan. Keep it and frame it, they are very valuable.
I've been playing with my Wilson Pro staff classic 6.1 since 1996. I have always used a synthetic gut string strung at 55 lbs. I'd like to continue playing with this racket; however, I noticed that I'm not the same player that I once was and find myself playing harder with this racket. It requires so much effort to hit my forehand and backhand. Any advice would be much appreciated. Hans
Same boat. I dont see the point in such a heavy racket since I just have to string it at ludicrously high tension on a stuff poly to get control. I am thinking of buying a clash 100 pro tour as it is arm friendly, light and a great all round racket
Hello, I had a Pro Staff 6.1si 110 sq. in. (like the first racquet in the video but 110 sq. in.) with 1/2 Kevlar strings, it had enough power (just a little assistance), great control and feel, awesome precision, stability, and gave no arm fatigue. What is the closest racquet/string combo I can find to this? At the moment I am demo-ing racquets, but have a Volkl Organix 8 with natural gut strings and would like more control/spin and slightly less power. I hate the Clash and like the V1 V Feel racquets in general. I know nothing about string tension and just ask for tension in the middle of the recommended range of each racquet. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated! BTW your videos are amazing and I watch them all.
Hey tennis spin what racquet would you recommend to a senior in highschool. I use an eastern grip and play offensive and try to end points quickly. I like heftier frames with a high swing weight
harlanzip im not sure what you mean. I hit through the ball pretty well on flat shots when approaching the net, and i still get plenty of spin when keeping my arm relaxed
I myself use a modified eastern forehand grip (90+ mph). For low balls it is so much easier, you can also lay your wrist back to get added topsin. I find myself gravitating to 16x19 frames under 100" with swing weight around 325-330 to drive through the ball. I used a rf97 for a little over a year or before the weight finally gave my shoulder issues from serving with a 12.7oz frame. There are not too many frames these days in a heavier spec other than the two Tennis Spin recommended. If you like a crisp feeling racquet the Yonex Vcore Pro 97 330 may just do the trick. Most frames I try I have to add a leathergrip and 4 grams at 3&9 to get up to my preferred spec. Good luck, and keep hitting forehands like Del Potro!
So, essentially, if you can handle the weight. A old lightly used racquet is just as good as the new stuff and ton cheaper. Wow! This is why I have been liking the hell out of the old stuff. Hallelujah!
I love your vids, but one thing i see is when you use the scale too figure out the balance, you don't let it hang in the air, the handle is always touching the scale, isn't that a bit inaccurate since it's not technically balanced in the air?
This is pretty random but I have a 4 3/8 pure aero 2016, and the 4 3/8 is perfect for my hand with the stock grip, so adding an over grip makes it too large for my hand. If I replace the stock grip with a Babolat skin feel and add an over grip on it, will that put the grip back to 4 3/8?

Something wrong with the weight on the RF version.. should be around 360 like the classic..You yourself has a video when the same racket is heavier..dont remember?
I would like to see you do a review on Prince Phantom 93p. I play with ProKennex Copper Ace (88 sq inch). Looking to upgrade and get a control oriented racquet, but I don't want to get those new racquets that have a 100 sq inch. Can you recommend some racquets? Thanks mate
Calvin I do not have access to prince rackets as they are now distributed by Tenniswarehouse. You ever think about the Head Prestige Mid? Thanks for watching!.
He's in Northern CA, near San Francisco. He doesn't want to give the location until after the CV is over, but if you do a little investigating, you can find the store. Just keep it to yourself. :-)
i still have my 95 prostaff from the late 90s and yeah, totally head light and very stiff. switched to the babolat pure drive roderick in the early 10s and never looked back. i remember it hitting like using a board to hit the ball, almost no feel and no spin / control. cant imagine going back.
Not true.. The burnfst 95 is the perfect replacement for the 85, 95 classics.. The new rf and 97prostaff is the closeest to the h22 prostock. You wrong and i can prove it.. Because i own all the original s
I don't get it with the rf97. That one should be 340 grams without strings. Only 7 grams for the strings? I would expect 355 grams with strings. Is this Wilson lack of quality control? Tablets got lighter with bigger heads and wider beams and the to be mostly head light. The only head heavy rackets are the Super light rackets with oversized heads to make sure they have enough plow through (swing weight) and for stability.
For all the love of Pro Staffs, other than the old original 85sq" version, none of them did it for me. I've wanted to like them, I've just never found them to my liking, with the current iteration likely the worst, as its way too stiff and unforgiving. Comparing the most recent version, I'd take a yonex vcore (330) any day. It feels much faster through the air and definitely a softer more forgiving feel. I reckon too many people use them, wanting to be just like their idols. Great marketing right there!! Edit: Oh....to add....tennis elbow from all of them other than the original as they are stiff. It's not the weight, also the sweet spot isn't overly generous, which makes them jarring. I'm not surprised you commented about that. Cheers
nope....last code letter needs to be a Q. Also check for red primer colour if its chipped somewhere....it looks like early Taiwan with those round letters, late Taiwan and China have more square letters. Not really square but more like modernized....also, if it does have red primer, your O is actually a Q and it is StVnc
Brother, I believe your scale is a bit light in the ass. An RF97 strung is about 357-360g, not 347g. Maybe you picked up the Asia version instead. The 85 had some plow, Sampras played with a 14oz version, but was strong as an ape. I wish you had tested a RF90v4, that racquet was a gift from God. But the 95 was probably the best club-level racquet of all time.
Ah, a few ounces difference, who cares... it still has strings and a grip, it should work! I think that's Wilson's philosophy these days when it comes to QC
I have a theory on why it is what it is. Basically Wilson captured the lightning in a bottle at least twice. But business requires cash flow sustainability. To make a long story shorter, a banker hoarded these for investment and warned Wilson to never compromise automatic renewable loans by doing something fair and democratic like reissuing these rackets with modern quality control.
That is highly likely St Vincent. It is like bxq as the q always ends up looking like an o. It codes for one of the last runs of st Vincent's. Just confirm that there is red primer underneath at any cracks or dings and I'm sure it's a St Vincent. Many people change the butt caps so the red primer is important. If the original butt cap is original, the sv5 version also should read 50-60 pounds as recommended tension of the earlier ones are higher.
Hi Eric I saw your video about tennis shoes. I'm really struggling to find decent quality tennis shoes in store and online, because of my height. I'm 149 cm (4'11). My shoe size is US 5.5 (men), but I can manage US 5 or 6. Can you or anyone here recommend me some decent websites to purchase tennis shoes with a smaller size for me? Don't recommend Tennis Warehouse please, because they very rarely have shoes for my size and are usually crappy. I don't mind the brand, so long as it isn't Nike. Anything like Adidas or Asics will be great. I find myself looking for women's shoes because I'm getting desperate. Please help a mate out. Btw, I'm from Australia. 9/5/2020
Hey Will, I can't really recommend an online store because I'm in the US, but have you checked out the Asics Gel Resolution 8? They make it in a size 6 and I had to go up a half size because they ran a half size too small for me. I've used the Asics Gel Resolution 7 and now I'm using the 8, and they're great! High quality shoe. Locks in my feet but very comfortable. Comes with a 6 month outsole warranty, so if you play a lot, it'll last a long time (or you can have them replaced if you wear through them). Also, my son has had really good luck with the Babolat Propulse Blast.
I know you said don't recommend Tennis Warehouse. I just looked on their Australian website, www.tennisonly.com.au/, and they don't have size 6 in the Asics. Not sure why TW stocks that size in the US but not Aus. Maybe they can work something out? I looked at Rebel Sport and you're right... they barely have any "tennis" tennis shoes. I hope you find some options.
Hey Will, one more suggestion... You may want to check out the top range of kids shoes. I don't know about all shoe manufacturers, but Asics kid's shoe sizes and men's shoe sizes line up from bottom to top. Meaning a size 6 in kid's and a size 6 in men's are the same size. I would probably check directly with each shoe manufacturer to be sure that's correct, but that may open up some options for you. AND... sometimes kid's shoe sizes have the same technology for almost half the price. Bonus!
i agree, the normal Pro Staff 97 was a decent frame, the countervail version turned it into a underpowered stick with no feel or touch. Hopefully a new one with FeelFlex is released sooner than later.
@@javace79 Thanks, I have been playing with tc95 for a long time and am not looking to change. Stick to one racquet! that's what pros do, that's what I do too.
I am currently playing with a Wilson classic pro staff (stretch) 6.1 and have had this racket since 1996. I recently purchased a Wilson Clash and love how it plays. I love them both!

i still have my 95 prostaff from the late 90s and yeah, totally head light and very stiff. switched to the babolat pure drive roderick in the early 10s and never looked back. i remember it hitting like using a board to hit the ball, almost no feel and no spin / control. cant imagine going back.
The Pure Drive was stiffer than any Prostaff 6.1, were you using the 5.0?
Not true.. The burnfst 95 is the perfect replacement for the 85, 95 classics.. The new rf and 97prostaff is the closeest to the h22 prostock. You wrong and i can prove it.. Because i own all the original s
Very cozy great channel, we wonder who's the lady behind the camera :D
Edit:
Oh....to add....tennis elbow from all of them other than the original as they are stiff.
At least 10 gramms was stolen from your RF97. :)
Ps85 and RF97 balance point also should have been the same (or near the same).
I think he's not using any overgrips. My RF97 comes in at 362g with two overgrips. Without, they are 352g.
@@leebr2010Wilson overgrip has a weight of 13 gram
@@Bikerbeest I have a scale. Wilson Pro overgrip is 4g each. Others are heavier. For example, Gamma Supreme is 7g.
@@leebr2010 You are correct , My scale was set wrong 5 gram including tape
Brother, I believe your scale is a bit light in the ass. An RF97 strung is about 357-360g, not 347g. Maybe you picked up the Asia version instead. The 85 had some plow, Sampras played with a 14oz version, but was strong as an ape. I wish you had tested a RF90v4, that racquet was a gift from God. But the 95 was probably the best club-level racquet of all time.
Poly full bed on heavy rackets are recipe for arm jellos
More likely Wilson QC being light in the a** than that scale!

Rebel Sport?
@@gungeternal4119 no I have always found shitty tennis shoes there. It would be a miracle to find a decent one let alone one that's actually my size
Bonus!
I miss Wilson Pro Staff midplus (95), didn't like 6.1.
Wilson's got a major part of the market but I've always found their racquets uncomfortable and not well made.
That rf97 is waaay underspec.
yeah it's almost 10 grams under the published spec weight - amazing Wilson quality control once again!
Bring back the Hyper Pro Staff 6.0 (EU version) so I dont have to rob a bank to buy a few.
These are all frames for advanced players and well beyond the ability of weekend warriors.
Agreed! I shared the same sentiment when I reviewed the RF97 on my channel.
What are you talking about, what level is a weekend warrior?
I disagree. Sometimes, it just comes down to what a player is used to and their playing style.
Sampras strung at 76 lbs
Yeah but natural gut, so that's like 50lbs equivalent for an average polyester.
Countervail.... FANTASTICALLY AWFUL!! WTF was Wilson thinking?
i agree, the normal Pro Staff 97 was a decent frame, the countervail version turned it into a underpowered stick with no feel or touch. Hopefully a new one with FeelFlex is released sooner than later.
@@javace79 IT's a shame such a beautiful painjob was wasted on a CV frame
@@msalvs Tennis Warehouse sells on all black non-countervail version for $139.
@@javace79 Thanks, I have been playing with tc95 for a long time and am not looking to change. Stick to one racquet! that's what pros do, that's what I do too.
I have yet to try one. Why do people dislike the countervail?
I am currently playing with a Wilson classic pro staff (stretch) 6.1 and have had this racket since 1996. I recently purchased a Wilson Clash and love how it plays. I love them both!
I'm still rockin my 6.1 stretch as well... this Racket took me through highschool varsity tennis in the late 90s-early 2000s.. have been scared to replace it because of how much I love the extra control I feel like I get on this racket..
