I"m not a huge fan of SRV's music but I do like Pride & Joy and Tightrope. Being a drummer who was away from playing for almost 50 years, I've started again on a Roland e-drum kit. Pride & Joy is a cut I was messing with the other day and wasn't quite sure how Chris Layton was playing the groove so I've been checking out RUclips covers. Your explanation and way of playing the groove sound spot on to me so thanks. Other drummers are playing the shuffle on the ride and doing some goofy stuff with their kick. For me this song is all about the left hand and you have it nailed.
Brilliant. So helpful as the reverb Texas vid with Chris Layton is difficult. Can’t make out what ride pattern is. He talks of swing pattern, but? I was very confused & ruined a practice session. Thank you, Joe!
I still find two-handed shuffles quite challenging despite working on them for many years. It's the combination of relaxed and snappy that takes a lot of patience. The left hand will improve along with all the other bits. 😁
@@Joethedrummer I've found that as long as I got my right arm set on cruise control and NOT think about it, I tend to do ok with my left arm which is obviously the weakest. Once I pay attention to my right, it tends to fall apart. I play along to a song which I believe is perfect for practicing different shuffles with- "She Dat Pretty" by none other than the actor Steven Seagal. It seems to benefit me - other than the elementary drum beat, there are no changes throughout unless you choose to improv a bit
@@CheapDrumsGuy sounds like you know what works. Not sure I'm brave enough to look up a Steven Segal song though, no matter how useful it is for practicing 🤣
@@Joethedrummer BTW, would you ever consider doing a video demo on Chris Layton's playing on the song "Tightrope"? That's such a tricky feel to get. It's really difficult to tell exactly what and how he is playing on that song , at least for me it is (maybe I'm over-thinking it??). Thanks!
Thanks. I bought this kit in a shop where it was on display next to a Roland Td17 something or other and it was the cyms that sold it to me and the more "realistic" sounds. The hihat is quite annoying though.
Excellent tutorial. I know this is an excellent tutorial because this is precisely how I play it!👍😂
Thanks, glad you liked it 😁
Best explanation I’ve seen on this so far.

@@Joethedrummer Of course!
I dig shuffles- this one was hard at first with my lazy left hand

Thanks man. Love C. Layton. U really broke this down well. Any chance u could break down Couldn’t Stand the Weather? Thank you
Thanks so much for the compliment. That's a great suggestion.
Great video, shuffles just aren’t my thing. But this helps a lot.
Thanks, much appreciated. I hope it helps to add another tool to your toolbox 😁

Nice demo! Love Chris Layton's playing. What electronic kit are you playing here?
Thanks. The digital abomination is made by ATV and it's called an EXS-5 kit.
@@Joethedrummer Nice! I just picked up the Alesis Strike Pro Special Edition kit. I can now play anytime of the day or night.

Nice sounding set. I have a Roland and the cymbals aren't near as clear. Good break down of a great song. "Don't do that" I had to laugh . . .

Hey man, you’re changing the snare pattern from your original instruction. Just sayin’. Sounds ok though. I use it too…😎
Thanks. I demonstrated a bunch of different snare patterns in this video.
awesome demonstration. thanks
