I want to basically direct stories. My art isn't the best but it's good enough for me to convey my ideas. I started a course at Uni for animation as a starting point, if I wanted to direct animated shows I should at least get some qualifications and contacts. But now I'm thinking bigger. We have A LOT of people in this class, as in more people than computers and Toon Boom licenses. So I thought what if I rallied everyone together to utilize their unique skills to create an animated short. we're there for 3 years so we can span the production across those years (as to not mess with peoples work and project schedules). 1 year for pre-production, planning, storyboarding, casting. Getting all the departments involved, acting, music production, etc. I can learn how to direct everything myself. In the end it's something for the showreel/portfolio.
Hi @Kev Dee, I'm an engineer, I worked in tech & automotive all my life but I've always been very interested in animated shows. I'm particularly fascinated by Storyboards and Planning even though I have 0 knowledge in art, 0 skills in drawing, but I have plenty of imagination and creativity, also as an Engineer I'm super organised. How do you recommend me to start? What should I do to get a chance to participate in the direction of an animated film?
How much have you done so far? I’d be interested in helping or watching it if it’s finished. My animated film is in the story development stage right now.
Solid advice, I would agree to this. I always tell my juniors that they need to focus on the artistic and not the technical so much. Getting a result is far more important than how you got it, it gives both a final product and something they can feel great about having succeeded in doing.
Now when you are an animation director, can you tell me more about that? A lot of people in the studio has different roles of the animated movie, how does your role work? What is your responsibilities, what does your schedule look like, etc.
Great video!! Thank you for making it. Yeah, there is no clear path. I went to film school, became a stop-motion animator, became an animation supervisor, eventually started directing episodes and now in my 40s I've been contracted to direct a CG feature. Its been a long road, but all I can say is focus on your craft, your story telling skills, verbal communication and networking. And don't give up.
This is one of the best advises in this day and age...This is really inspiring and it is a fact that you only truly learn something on a personal level by experiencing it. Thank you brother. Wish you the best of everything.😊
You're good. You're fucking good. Those few lines touched me. I had the same goal but then you said start making movies and you are a director!!! That's so True!!! Thanks Man!!! Much love and success to you !!!
thank you finally ! you are the only one who, i found on this platform, to talk abut how to become an animator director by being straight forward saying and saying the reality of things but giving us real advices not some phrases that has no sense at all so thank you
Great video. I recently came to a similar conclusion myself that I wanted to direct animated stories, didn't think 10+ years in a department hoping to get promoted was right for me, and that I should just start making shorts in my spare time. If someone eventually wants to pay me to do it, great; if not I still created something and had fun doing it.
this video is gold, i'm going to follow the advice you show in your videos :D i'm a novice animator, i'm not very good yet, but i want to develop my own stories and characters, so now it's very clear to move myself and do something, instead of waiting to a animation studio, i don't close the possibility but now my main goal is create my own stories by myself :) by the way, i loved your short films, specially lift up and food for though awesome channel :D
I think I might end up becoming a director somehow since I like shot composition and want to come up with stories for films/tv shows/games (I even keep a playlist of various analyses involving animation, film techniques, directors, etc). However, atm, I'd rather avoid becoming one since I'm not used to dealing with people and I don't know exactly what I want to do career-wise
"Making a Feature film is a goal that might take a very long time to achieve. And is not a realistic goal for animation if you're just starting out." *Yeah, when I made my animated feature film in highschool I broke reality. I don't recommend it personally unless you're REALLY passionate and know how to clean up those fragments.*
If your are a writer guy like me, its difficult to find people that are willing to that leap to work on a no pay gig to get started. We are wanting to start our own web channel to produce everything from shorts to series and full features. Yep we are dreaming big but with todays technology, we know that if we get our teasers and trailers out, we will get viewers. Just finding that core group to start with is tough.
Yup! Start animating your own films, simple as that. We no live in an age where we can make our own niche films and build an audience of thousands. YOu couln't to that a little over a decade ago.
I’m making a feature animated film because my story needs to be told and I believe in myself. In the words of John Locke, “Don’t tell me what I can’t do.”
Hay. I love animation. Mostly anime. I am doing electrical engineering. But i want to become an animator. Please can you teach me any basic *How to start * Which software should I use. *What qualities i need to improve animation career . *How can i make short films like you. You mentioned that website is really helpful but i have some doubts.
I also tried studying electrical engineering while studying animation at home in my spare time. I ended up quitting because I found it hard to study something that had very little to do with what I love which is film and animation. I really hope you succeed in studying engineering while also learning animation, for me it was not easy...
There are some other tutorials online that could teach you. Consider places like Udemy and Lynda. Also do some research on what type of animation you'd like to get involved in (3d comes to mind)
great .. but it is all about Animation Director na ..? coz there are few more directors in one animated movie like 'background director' etc. btw 'TASTEFUL' is your story? i saw the trailer.. really it was amazing.
probably better to learn animation along the way piece by piece and maintain a job. Quitting without financial support lands most people in trouble unless you're willing to give up everything for the sake of learning the discipline (not recommended unless you have different plants to support yourself)
Can one become a Director without knowing how to animate (but knowing every single element of making a movie/film) Edit: I mean that my drawing is awful and I simply do not have the determination to do it, I am an idea generator and storywriter and I can be an actor, so is it possible? If yes, what kind of crew do I need to assemble and where?
Exactly the same question I Have. i have a clew who can make movie..but they need to direct them, make story for them..that's what i want to so with them.. but I don"t know..they make movie i just look at them and direct them. Am I still director?
So what fo u mean by I MAKE FILMS...you are using the softwares in computer to make animation movie? Or u r making story and hire someone or your friend..then tell him make this...and make that!!

"Making a Feature film is a goal that might take a very long time to achieve. And is not a realistic goal for animation if you're just starting out."

I fell weird because I cant draw or animate. But i want to write and direct stories with animators.
What is the most quality of an animator
I'm all about low effort or no effort so I can't imagine wanting to be an animator or director.
I'm looking for animated architecture home
im a doctor. but i love film making. not sure if i should quit medicine and pursue film making . -_-

If I'm a director I should make two shows Heli Monsters the game and The GoodHope Hotel Animated Series of The Amazing Digital Circus
Akira Kurosawa put it something like this: If you want to become a director, write scripts; you only need paper and pencil to write scripts.
