In military strategy, there's a fine line between a genuine breakthrough and merely pushing the frontline into a salient. While both represent a forward movement, the latter can be fraught with peril. A salient refers to a protrusion in the frontline where an army has managed to push forward but not break through enemy defenses, creating a bulge in the line. While this bulge may appear as a territorial gain on a map, it represents a potentially precarious position on the ground. Forces within a salient are exposed to attack from multiple sides, with flanks vulnerable to encircling movements. Moreover, the extended supply lines feeding the troops inside the salient can be easily interdicted by the enemy. When the attacking force only succeeds in creating a salient rather than achieving a full breakthrough, they risk being caught in a position where they are extended too far without the strategic depth or advantage that a genuine breakthrough would afford. Salients that extend into previously devastated regions further compound the risk. The destroyed infrastructure, whether it's roads, buildings, or other essential features, limits the defensive and logistical capabilities of the force inside the salient. Without adequate shelter or proper routes for resupply, the troops become vulnerable to concentrated enemy fire, ambushes, and potential encirclement. Essentially, what might initially look like an advance can swiftly turn into a trap. In conclusion, while a salient may indicate some form of advancement, without the full exploitation and momentum that comes with a genuine breakthrough, the occupying force can find itself in a significantly disadvantageous position. It's a situation that emphasizes the importance of not just gaining ground but understanding the strategic implications of that ground.

Not yet. But it is likely coming. As that gap widens, more and more mechanized units can pour through.

War, like sport, has people rooting for both sides to accomplish their goal, which is to obviously win! So no matter how objective one is, a person will naturally see the better side of things for whichever team or in wars case, country they are backing. @xXBisquitsXx NPR just did an interesting interview with the wife of the President of Iran about the Hijab. To say it is interesting doesn't go far enough. While personally I just don't agree with it, admittedly that is my cultural and social bias talking. She makes some points that from her perspective, I suppose makes sense and are reasonable enough if you can step back and admit that not everyone wants to be like us and is OK with that. It's tough to turn your judgement off especially with hard social topics that ring heavy when thinking about them.
Trenches are a double-edged sword. They provide enhanced protection across a large line utilizing a minimal number of personnel, but if the enemy takes it, they become a sheltered and easily defensible position with which so spread laterally up and down the trench. A small breach at a single point along the trench gives attackers a focused path down said trench to uncompromised areas that were previously heavily defended. So on the map, if Ukraine has ready access to even one part of a trench line, you matter as well turn the whole thing blue because the Russians aren't going to be stupid enough to try and hold a breached trench line nor leave forces in place with a compromised trench behind them.
@@kalashnikovdevil So they fight to the end for every inch of trench, they also booby trap trenches and they are also constantly retreating. Jeez, I can't keep up with all of these things that are probably true at different times in different locations. The defenses are designed to be retreated from. Some troops hold on longer than others but I doubt if "give your last breath for one of hundreds of random trenchlines" is the order that's been given. The defensive works south of Robotyne seem a bit precious though.
The same with minefields. They're a great way to disrupt a frontal assault and if breached they make it impossible to make enveloping defensive actions since the mines are also dangerous to the defender.
As to someone who watches the daily report on the Military Summary Channel. I can say that these aren't as much as break throughs, as they are cauldrons to hammer concentrated troops into a pocket of death. The paras aren't called in so much to stop the breakthrough as they are better at killing, and these pockets are concentrations of soldiers. In a grind out war of attrition, by the numbers. Have your best in the most concentrated areas to get the most action out of them. The actual Russian defensive map is stupid in it's depth, with mines. This is going to be the winter soon and the Russians might be able to close these pockets and capture people.
@@verrico7536 I find it quite accurate when it comes to Ukraine using drones to hit the Russian ships and how they were doing well there. As well as using the oil rigs and snake island and launching points. However since the North Korean agreement Russian are launching extra munitions knowing more are on route. That being said their are whole sites and channels which has made it seem for a year that Ukraine has Russia on the ropes. It's a big money racket and the military industrial complex is making bank, and feeding Ukrainians to the machine. I figure NATO would see Ukrainian as Russia's former ally about a decade ago. So it's not that big of a loss for NATO but a huge loss for Russia. Not to mention the weapons they can test, and the money they can make.
@@verrico7536 also been following this when Vice was still good. They did a series called "Ukrainian burning" and "Russian Roulette" so this conflict isn't new to me since then I've had years to form a decent opinion on the conflict.
The reason for the zig zag layout comes from lessons learned in WWI and before. If a shell lands directly in the trench it only kills those in the immediate vicinity. The blast cannot ravel down the length of the trench. The Ukrainians are using drones and grenades to help clear each section once in the trench.
Eh, a modern artillery shell is still gonna be pretty brutal in the whole general area whether u got zig zags or not, but the zig zags do definitely help - especially for grenades. The grenades are where the zig zag really make a huge difference. They probably help a lot with just regular guns too, flamethrowers, shotguns and machineguns. Just having some cover to hide behind makes a huge difference. But yeah, modern artillery wheels are crazy.
It will be pretty brutal but modern artillery shells also still have their blast limits depending on the depth of trenches, spread of troops and structure of the trenches. An indent can really redirect the explosion to a sphere smaller than what its actual potential is, or depending on the shell can also obliterate just the general area and bury men alive. One of the real dangers in the end from the trenches is actually getting buried alive in the mud and dirt from shells dislodging so much of the previous structure at once.@@nicklibby3784

You neglected to mention that the annual rainfall for that particular area is extremely low... Typically Desert like. (but made manageable due to irrigation). There is no guarantees but the land may not get as wet and may freeze much sooner as well due to less snow cover. Which all bodes well for winter offensive action.
Remember in dessert like terrain while rainfall is sparse it generally falls almost all at once or twice thruout the year with almost nothing in summer and winter so they are still going to get a lot of rain if norms hold.
There wil be a mud period of about 5 weeks then the ground freezes and mobility is restored. Note that it doesn't get killer cold like in the north. More like Italy without mountains
Melitopol, Mariupol and Zaporzhzhia all have 19-20 inches yearly rainfall, year round rain with highest rain average in June, and a warm humid climate. Where do you think is the desert?
It scares me to see that many tanks that close together that close to the front. As a light infantryman tanks themselves also scared the shit out of me - even our own in exercises.
Don't worry. These are locations way in the rear, and possible from training. They aren't riding into battle with giant flags on top of their tanks advertising their locations either, in case you didn't notice those.

It's less of a breakthrough and more of a breach, Emil Kastehelmi has interesting threads on this, but basically a breakthrough is only such when the enemy is no longer able to mount an organized defense and the breaching forces are able to move with speed and exploit the flagging defense to make significant movements into the enemy's rear areas. That hasn't happened yet. Instead it's more of a slow slog from trench to trench and treeline to treeline. Even if a breakthrough is achieved I doubt Ukraine would be effectively able to exploit it given they've committed both breaching Echelons (9th and 10th Corps) to just getting to where they are now. They do have a Third Echelon reserve force but they're equipped for flank defense not being the spearhead. They might take Verbove, but reaching Tokmak is likely beyond Ukraine's current capabilities. Then Ukraine will find themselves in a salient they made around Robotyne, but the Russians also lack the forces at this time to conduct an operation of the scale necessary to attempt an encirclement so we're at a stalemate as neither side is able to advance the front.
I'm honestly convinced the Russians don't really care about just taking it back in a large scale offensive at the moment, just putting up enough of a resistance to make it seem worthwhile fo the ukrainians to keep pushing while blasting the ukrainian army with artillery.
I think you are underestimating both sides. The division the russians just brought in is one of their best and has strong equipment. They will likely try and flank the salient. That would be my guess. Who knows if it will work. I know support for Ukraine isn't going to continue much longer. Not in North America. Were getting sick of wasting our money on a corrupt country and my tax dollars just bought zelensky a mansion in Egypt worth millions. Like wtf. And his wife spending 50k at a specialty shop in france.... Wtf
They only really need 70 miles, enough to put Himars relatively safely in range of a key transport hub. Then the great squeeze is technically already on.
If Ukraine doesn't have the forces to exploit the breakthrough then they shouldn't be breaking through. I don't know the entire Ukrainian army breakdown and commitments, but going on the offensive without the forces to capitalize on it, seems short-sighted. I suspect they have more forces than that and are just waiting for the right time. The time is not here yet but it's coming close..

Yes they have a mail box but there isn't even an intersection, stop sign or a dog. My parents live in the country. 9 houses, a drive thru with gas pumps, an intersection between two state routes. Do you know what we call that? Nothing! So when Ukraine takes three house surrounded by open wheat fields... did the rabbits have babies? General Milley stated a few days ago that America alone has provided over $100 billion in aid. Looking at the map in Ukraine they got our order incorrect, we did not ask for bread sticks. We paid for steaks with potatoes and salad bar. Can I get refill on this glass while you pull your head out of your a**? Been a long time since I was in basic, Desert Shield ramp to be exact. It's also a helpful reminder to those people out there that don't realise that people are biased and not to just take it as absolute fact.
We all are bias, but we must be realistic lest we let our bias cloud our judgement.
There is a difference between having a bias and having an agenda.
War, like sport, has people rooting for both sides to accomplish their goal, which is to obviously win! So no matter how objective one is, a person will naturally see the better side of things for whichever team or in wars case, country they are backing. I don't profess to say war and sport are equal in nature, of course! Just that the comparison of obbjectivity but still being biased towards one side or anywhere is completely understandable!
You'd think that, but they're apparently fighting for every foot of trench, no matter how badly they're compromised.
Arty .and now .. also .. pre positioned .charge
@@nielsjensen4185read military doctrine and stop guessing. Envelopment isn’t a goal if mines are laid. These military leaders aren’t stupid
Ukraine hasn’t broken thru shit yet if they did it would be all over tik toc. That armored column was completely annihilated.

1:36 damn that was refreshing
*Shells. Not "wheels"
UKR 400,000 DEAD and 2 MILLION wounded no Nazis left soon. The trenches are only good for burying Nazis

Judging from the vegetation, the area likely gets about 16-17 inches of precip a year.
Remember in dessert like terrain while rainfall is sparse it generally falls almost all at once or twice thruout the year with almost nothing in summer and winter so they are still going to get a lot of rain if norms hold.

It scares me to see that many tanks that close together that close to the front. I imagine it is a propaganda pose that was quickly dispersed but I still get that worried feeling I got as an infantry officer back in my very modest military experience in the '80s and '90s. As a light infantryman tanks themselves also scared the shit out of me - even our own in exercises.
They’re probably over 40km from any Russian arty. Spotting that formation and hitting them with long range munitions in time is not very likely.
I noticed that too and also that they are in loose formation.

В своем обращении министр обороны США Ллойд Остин просит российских военнослужащих не охотиться на танки Abrams. LOL вы слышали, что
Wtf
Interesting
They only really need 70 miles, enough to put Himars relatively safely in range of a key transport hub. Then the great squeeze is technically already on.
If Ukraine doesn't have the forces to exploit the breakthrough then they shouldn't be breaking through. I don't know the entire Ukrainian army breakdown and commitments, but going on the offensive without the forces to capitalize on it, seems short-sighted. I suspect they have more forces than that and are just waiting for the right time. The time is not here yet but it's coming close..
