  • In this video we unbox the new FrSky Tandem X20S transmitter. We see what features are on the radio and take a quick look at ETHOS. This is not an in depth look, nor a comparison to OpenTX. I'll be covering those, and my experiences in future videos.
    A couple of things I missed in the video, due to the corrupted video file:

    Hi and thanks for a nice channel you have.
    Have just ordered an X20 like you so I am completely open to what frsky has done and have used frsky for many years now most with open tx.
    Sees that this is mostly a graphic version of opentx.
    Can't wait to learn it.

      Thanks Poul. I’m sure you’ll be pleased. It’s a great transmitter. ETHOS is certainly improving all the time. A lot of what OpenTX can do, so can ETHOS. The rest is either on the way, or something the developers will look in to.

    Thanks for such great info on Ethos! I am a long time Spektrum user (2006!) and recently bought the X20S because I was interested after reading some of the threads on RC Groups. I don't plan to give up on Spektrum but I always like to check out new things. I have watched (and studied!) your videos and some others and have successfully converted several planes over to this new system. even making my own voice files for the functions I use. Again, thanks! Joe

I've had the X20 in Black for some weeks now & love it as I felt the RM was to chunky for me after owning a X7 for 4 years, setting up all my models took just a few hours & I never asked for any help not like say OpenTX, I will look forward to more from you :)

      The Q-X7 wheel is like the X10S. The X20 is slightly different. It’s one piece of plastic with no separate enter button. It just doesn’t feel as good to use as the Q-X7/X10. Still miles better than a scroller wheel though.

    I watched it a second time cause first time was more listening while cooking.
    I totally agree about 16:02 and the control/steering buttons and the quality of the QX7.
    Great overview and I guess that till Chrismas we might see a far improved one - regarding the software and maybe the hardware issues that are there.
    I personally do not go anymore for new tech in the first season after release. A season is short, good weather rare this year and I do not fiddle around. I wait for all the reviews and reports what is going wrong and then will make a decision before Chrismas. I even do no longer build new planes. I simply wait for autumn and then buy the stuff I need, but those are usually big hobbyking boxes that will be delivered, but they must last for a season.
    The last move had been the call from Pawel for upgrading to iNAV 2.6 stable and also the latest OpenTX stable to have a reliable foundation.
    I am impressed and can not wait to listen and watch your 6 months later points, those that had bothered you and those that had bothered you and been ironed out.

      You have made some very nice points there. I will add a video at the end of the year about ETHOS and how it has progressed. My main criticisms of the transmitter are hardware. But they are really only very minor (jog wheel and missing T5 and T6). The 6 button switch may be improved by ETHOS, so hopefully I have something positive to report there, along with LUA and Crossfire support.

    Super review! I'm a FrSky guy and OpenTx guy...X9D, X9D+, X12S...at least FrSky has a path for my loads of X-receivers (even if I have to update them to version 2). Ethos looks promising but not totally convinced. I live and die by my FLVSS lipo sensor and they seem to be having trouble with "calculated" sensors. Hoping they fix that soon...if they do, I might take the plunge.

      @MrD  3 года назад +1

      Thanks Russ. I’m sure they’ll get it all working much better. For me personally, global variables still needs work and am looking forward to the LUA scripts implementation. But, it’s still very new. I’m just impressed with the developers listening to the pilots and implementing what they need. It has a lot of potential.

    What a great video. I am on my second Futaba radio. The latest, a 14 SG has already been back for repair & is now showing signs of issues. Ie receivers becoming "unlinked". I like this transmitter you have shown, as it is much cheaper than the equivalent Futaba. It also seems far more user friendly, which I think is a Futaba failing. trouble is that our club members use Futaba plus one or 2 spectrum. So I will not be able to get any help if I have a problem.
    We have a senior instructor who uses Futaba & sometimes I go on a buddy lead when I have a new model. I assume that I cannot hook his Futaba 18SG to an X20S
    Can I use my 617FS receivers with this transmitters?

      Hi Palle, I'm not really in control of any features, I can only make recommendations to FrSky. To be fair, they take it all in, and are very much listening to pilot feedback.
      Yes, it should work fine with RealFlight. I don't have that particular simulator myself. But I have used the X20S with other simulators and it works fine. I have a model setup for the simulators with all the switches defined. Then plug in the USB and select Joystick from the options. Better yet, it charges the radio as you fly the sim.

    Got through it finally on the 4th attempt. Brilliant, I did not know the head of design for EthOS was the former OpenTx main dev which now explains the delay on OpenTx 2.4 in my book. Maybe I missed it, but how is the haptic hardware experience regarding quality of the materials used ? Gimbals should be the same as the Horus ones but how does the shell feel ? Still not an alu/carbon shell with leather grips, unfortunately ;) A few things that came to my mind: Full size Crossfire ? If you want a bluetooth bridge you'd need the fullsize module which has a JR/-bay base, which is also needed for TBS cloud functions such as dynamic vtx because the WiFi module is physically located in the JR/-adaptor. How would you solve that with the X20 ? And second: Since you are rather close to FrSky and INAV I suppose there will be an IFWG EthOS pro model at some future point in time, and there may be a telemetry script similar to the INAV Lua at some point in time. Why not go a step further and put an INAV configurator in it ? That big screen would be absolutely put to use with that. Like SpeedyBee, but just without the annoying connection issues. Simply and conveniently OTA. Now that would be an absolute USP to buy this radio. You could later expand that to BetaFlight and even Ardu, and since FrSky now have a full-time employee developer this should not be too hard. This and give me my alu/carbon shell with genuine leather grips and I'll buy it... Even if it's FrSky ;)

    • @MrD
      @MrD  3 года назад +2

      Henrik, I’m still not used to GrumpOldNerd. I have to go to work, so can’t signify this with the long response it should have. But maybe it’s good to leave you guessing 🤣
      You may have noticed the glitching in the video. The unboxing part had loads of that. I’m currently pricing up a new computer to get over this. But anyway, the gimbals feel good, just like the X10S. The switches feel as good as the X10S, if not better, and the pots are awesome. The only thing that does not feel as good is the menu jog wheel. Physically in the hands it feels lighter and more like an X9D. But overall it feels good. The plastics aren’t bad and the rubber grips are effective. Maybe they could be upgraded to leather at some point 😉
      I need to get the Lite to full size adapter. Once I do, I can answer about the crossfire module. But having said that, it would be easy to buy the $10 adaptor and make a new 3D printed frame for it to allow modules to fit. The only issue with the current location could be the handle.
      The configurator idea is great. I personally still prefer to take a laptop. But I can see how this could benefit a lot of people.

    If you wouldn't mind, i have a question regarding this radio. I got the S version. Most of setup was a breeze. I also bought one of the yapuu, i think it is, cables. I knew it may not work. I hooked it up to the telem 2 port on my Cube orange, set all settings according to directions, i believe all correctly, they made sense anyway. Do i absolutely have to run the script in order to get anything out of it on the radio? Can sensors from the orange cube be detected on the radio without running the script? I expected to at least be able to get the battery voltage to come through. I guess if you bother with that question, kind of along the same lines, can i get a Frsky GPS V2 to interact with the Cube? I ordered a Here GPS but its backordered, so who knows when that comes. Flying a quadcopter by the way.

    • @MrD
      @MrD  2 года назад +1

      Sorry, you’ve really lost me with the “yapuu”. Is this some kind of telemetry device?
      You should be able to connect a receiver to the cube and get telemetry back to the radio. I’m really not familiar with cube flight controllers. But they should at least have SBUS with SmartPort, if not F.Port. If you get that hooked up and the cube set up, you should get telemetry back. You will need to discover new sensors on the transmitter.

      @@MrD Thanks for the reply. I may need to try again, it didn't seem to work that way with my initial setup. The Yapuu script and cable is supposed to send telemetry from the cube to the Yappuu, LUA script for displaying several cool things on an Open TX radio. So like i said i bought one of these with the hopes it would get me some sensor from the cube, but as i said i had an inkling it wasn't going to work, but cheap and worth a try. Who knows maybe they adapt the script for Ethos. I get all my FrSky sensor across just fine, but i don't think any Cube sensor talk, or as i mentioned the FrSky GPS doesn't talk to the cube either, not sure if this would ever work. As you can tell i'm a little new here.

      I’ve just been checking out the Yaapu telemetry Wiki, and it reads like the script opens up the extra sensors. So the script would be needed.

    Great series about ethos and tandem x20s. I just got my radio few weeks a go and it is complaining about the rtc battery low. Any idea where can I find that battery so that I would be able to replace it?

    • @MrD
      @MrD  2 года назад +2

      It shouldn't really be complaining this soon. If you take a look at the video here ruclips.net/video/YEAoKM-Ta9g/видео.html you can see the RTC clock battery peeking out above the RF board. If you look above the shielding for the RF module on the right, you'll see the black antenna lead, which goes to the external antenna connector. Above that you can see about half of the silver battery inside the brown case. I've not taken this out myself yet. But it looks like you need to unscrew the RF board. Then you should have easy access to the RTC battery.

      I’m not sure to be honest. If you pop the back off, you may be able to see the number on the cell. It’s just the 4 screws, and push down on the sliders. Just be carful of the antennae cables. I could have a look at mine tomorrow if the number isn’t visible on yours.

      I have replaced that battery which is a cr1220 3V battery. I've put it together and it is still complaining about the RTC battery low. Either that battery is not it or it's something else wrong in there. I went to see the alarm settings and it was set to 3V. Now these batteries are marked as 3V batteries therefore I assumed that value is not correct so I changed it to default that was 2V. The alarm went away. By the way this was how I got the radio.

      Hi Stu. Yes I’m at Browndown.
      Its been about 9 months, and I’m still very happy with the radio. It feels great, and I’ve not had any problems. Just the odd UI bug. But the team are very quick to fix those or add features to improve ETHOS even further. There are another couple of pilots in the club who are also using the X20 and are both enjoying the experience too. One was a past FrSky user whereas the other has moved from Spektrum and Futaba.

    Will it
    Do
    Crossfire do u know

    • @MrD
      @MrD  2 года назад

      Yes it will. But currently it is a hack, where you need to convert a full size module to use the JR Lite bay, and use PPM to communicate between the transmitter and module. But it can work.
      However the CRSF protocol, along with Ghost, will be developed for ETHOS. Once that is there, crossfire modules with a JR Lite connection will work out the box. This will come after LUA scripts have been developed. There’s no point in having it before LUA, or the settings could not be changed. LUA is in development now.

      You’re welcome to that opinion. I was sceptical before using ETHOS, as I am a massive fan of OpenTX. But, I have to say that for me, other than two things, I can do everything with ETHOS that I can do with OpenTX. They are both pretty much on the same page. OpenTX has the two missing things, but ETHOS is so much easier to use, especially when setting up new models.
      What is it you think is missing in ETHOS that you would miss from OpenTX? The two for me are CRSF (which is coming) and being to disassociate trims based in flight modes.

      Widgets have been there for a long time. LUA scripts are a recent addition, so hopefully we will see some scripts ported over soon. All that telemetry is already there too. The main thing missing is Crossfire. But with ELRS compatibility inbound, that should mean CRSF support.

But then I found out Bertrand was behind it and kept an eye on the development and watched it mature, when they added ppm center control and LUA I thought it deserved looking at with an open mind and went for it, now I love it, personally I think of it as Bertrand taking the opportunity to do Open TX again from the start and do what he would have done differently right from the start.

      Don’t get me wrong. I loved my X10S. I’ve now moved to the X20 Pro. For me that is where I want to be for flying. I prefer the lower weight and screen position. The only thing I’d change is to get back the 6-way rotary switch from the X10S. I do still prefer that over the individual buttons.
