This was the Mobile Riverine Force. Naval Task Force 115, 116, and 117, which was what my Dad's unit was assigned to. He arrived in country in March of '68 and was assigned to B Co 3rd Bn 47th Infantry Regiment 9th Infantry Division. Their basecamp was known as "Bearcat," and Division HQ was in Dong Tam. He told me about the muddy waterways of the Mekong Delta that consisted of rivers, canels, and streams that were full of leeches, misquotes, wasps, and red ants would damn near eat you alive and the endless rice paddies that stretched as far as the eye could see. The thick, deep mud was always a problem. He survived 12 months of combat and came away with a chest full of medals, bronze medals, purple heart 💜, the C.I.B (Combat Infantrymens badge), and a host of other medals, etc. He retired with the rank of E-7 and passed away in Nov of '83...R.I.P

Thank you for sharing your story. I was in the 1969 draft. In some ways, life was simpler back then.

Unreal. For anyone who thinks incompetent leadership is new or not applicable to the United States should be reminded of the suffering these people endured.

Hard to say, some of it is mud and water. In several shots the camera lens got in the spray. Remember back then, no digital storage. It all was on film. It would be the last analog war.

An interesting aspect of the vietnam war a propaganda film that glosses over the true horror of that war just like john waynes film i watched a few years back the Green Berets, interestingly history wise the americans were on a winning streak when it came to international events that prompted military intervention world war 2, the Korean war then the Vietnam war changed all that , perhaps had they entered the involvement earlier and altered the direction of the vietnam back in 1945 ?, when the french resumed its role as masters of what was then called french indochina, and the small communist insurgency force known as the viet minh, it had a opportunity to aid the french and support them, but president eisenhower was anti colonial in every aspect, and dead against the french returning it did however give some military aid not enough through lack air power was a major problem , it was military weak after ww2 but what inhibited the french in its operations in vietnam and its general strategic planning was the french dien bien phu

Every Vietnam vet I ever talked to said that they would've ultimately prevailed had the political leaders not gotten cold feet and decided it was time to get out of there because it was taking too long. The Tet Offensive ended badly for the communists and should've given the US and ARVN the initiative, but it was squandered thanks to public aversion to what they'd seen on their television screens. The complete idiocy of higher-level US military commanders didn't help much either. Expending lives to take a nameless hill out in the middle of the jungle, only to abandon it to the enemy after you finally took it? No wonder the vets came home with PTSD.
