Awhile back I broke down in pine bluff and a black guy who went by “blue” not only helped me but took me to my first cook out. No one was wondering why a white guy was there the only thing everyone was asking me “did you get enough to eat” then after smoking I was on my way. Sadly he was shot and killed and it was over beef with another gang
I broke down in Compton, in an Audi, at night, in the early '90's. An old cat escorted me into the parts store to get stop-leak and stood guard as i dealt with the radiator. Was a white punk rocker kid, rollin with a white girl whose head was shaved. Old dude would not even take $5 for his trouble. There are good folk in every 'hood. Hell, i lived in Zone 6 ATL for years with no problems from anyone but DPD. Same with Forrest City...no problems for years.
Gangs are the biggest stumbling block for the black community, sadly most music nowdays glorifies that lifestyle.
May I suggest never saying White guy, black guy or Asian guy, or Hispanic guy?
As a white male, I would never start off describing one of my white friends as white. So why do that with any other color of skin? Your skin color means nothing. I'm not the PC police. In fact, I hate the PC culture. This is just something that's been very clear from a young age. Wanna you end Race warriors? Stop pretending we are a different race. Because we are not.

Im a 90s baby Im from Pine Bluff westside born and raised ,life there was rough I remember my first time being robbed I remember seeing my first dead body at 5 a man died pounding on the door by time my older sister answered he fell in the house dead.I was 8 yrs old walking home from school a crackhead took my backpack, growing up there with gangs being such a big influence it was either be hunter or hunted which means if you wasn't with a set you were an enemy. Random days you can be jumped or robbed I remember drivebys at will it reminded me of a battlezone at times. I won't forget were I came from those streets taught me alot about survival and taught me you can have hopes for a better life its home but I'll never go back.

I grew up in Pine Bluff and moved at a very young age. I moved to Texas due to my mothers job and found a good life for myself. I do not forget where i came from. My mission is to go back home and make a difference for my hometown. People don't understand growing up there and the things you witness as a young child how it influences your decisions in life. Nevertheless, i went to college and the military and now i have a successful career. My goal is to go back home and do what i can to make a positive difference in my home town. The problem with Pine Bluff is the lack of a strong and growing tax base. The jobs are not there because the city never kept pace with a changing economy. The business community never demanded higher standards in the local school district, and the residents never made city leaders accountable by voting them out of office when they failed to delivery on economic goals. I recently visited my hometown a few weeks ago, and there's a glimmer of hope with many residents that want to see Pine Bluff succeed. However, the residents must understand that it took 40 years for the city to decline and it will take at least that amount of time for the city to realize its true potential.

jayfont leroi Don’t think for a second that more taxes would fix this place. Pine bluff has declined due to a number of economic problems but not a lack of taxes. Walmart is to blame for tons of failed businesses. Not to mention I know first hand that multiple businesses including shoneys shut down due to internal employee theft and a horrible workforce. Pine bluff is not going to recover because good, hard working people don’t want to get robbed either on the street or by their employees so they leave. We have a society that glorifies crime and violence through music and movies. It’s sad but that’s the way it is and until that changes kids will continue to aspire to that lifestyle and at the end of the day PARENTS are the most to blame.

There's companies because there's no good potential employees. More than 1 big company went there to scout potential employees and said, "fuck that place".
No businesses, no jobs, no jobs, no tax base
We just moved to Pine Bluff in January. Downtown PB definitely needs an overhaul. There are so many vacant run down homes and businesses. But there are so many good people in PB. We are trying to support as many local businesses as we can. It's sad that the crimes that occur here are all that people talk about. Let's talk about the people who check on their neighbors, about the students succeeding at UAPB, the public schools, the 4H groups, little league sports, etc. Talk about the Special Olympians, the marching bands our local restaurants. I know I'm new to the community here, but Pine Bluff is where we have bought our home and where we are making friends. We have this expanding casino area. We need more than that to pull PB out of this hole of neglect, poverty, crime and fear that it's infamous for.

I enjoyed your efforts and goodwill with this video. I know Pine Bluff has done it tough for many years now. I lived there in 53/54, sixth grade at Gabe Meyer and seventh grade at Pine Bluff junior high. I have great memories from those days. Elvis came and played at our school auditorium when he was just starting out. I ended up in LA as a session musician and record producer. I bet me and your bass player friend would have lots to talk about. Wishing you all the best.

I'm from Pine Bluff born and raised.
I really think Pine Bluff's fall was in the late 80's early 90's (when Pine Bluff peaked) corruption took over we had a lot of corrupt people as Mayor, in the board, I'm pretty sure people associated with the police department got in trouble for some type of corruption going on. In turn we had a lot of needed funding and just attention needed for our city to prosper like it, and it just didn't happen. It didn't help that farming got WAY more efficient (thus a lack of jobs), a bad recession right after that and a lot of people (10-20k) moved out of the city (either to White Hall or further away). Now crime is bad (and it has since the mid 90's - early 2000's) I think mostly because that's a way to survive. You can't get a good job to support your family unless you work out at the Paper Mill, hospital or the now pretty much nonoperational Pine Bluff Arsenal. If you are from the area, do you work at a fast food joint for the rest of your life or move to Little Rock and get a good job? It's pretty obvious what most people do if they can!
I remember growing up and seeing the Pines Mall at the very end of its heyday; events in the food court, you could walk to Walmart in the mall, or eat at Garfield's. Slowly but surely the historical homes have collapsed, the mall has been on the verge of closing permanently for a while now. Hell, Dillard's became a Dillard's discount store! I hate to see it.
I always like to think if I won the lottery I would redo a lot of the historical home in Pine Bluff and give them to people in town. We used to have a home in town with a hole in it from a cannon ball from the Civil War! The home has long since been torn down.

So sad. I was born and raised there too. My dad still lives there. I very rarely go back, but when I showed my husband around a couple of years ago after visiting for thanksgiving, I was stunned. I cannot believe how ran down pine bluff is. I remember getting dropped off every Saturday at the pines mall or the skating rink as a kid. Very sad.
I remember when the mall opened. I know this sounds bad, but its 100% true, but Friday night was "white kids night" and Saturday was "black kids night". Anyway, on Friday night, not 1 fight. Maybe two cops at the mall doing security. On Saturday night, it was like 90% of PBPD was there constantly breaking up fights. I do not know why to this day, groups of black people can't get together without "throwing down". I dont understand it

I grew up in the 80s and pine bluff was a great place to live the mall was thriving there was a drive in several movie theaters you could go anywhere in the city and feel safe.
My sister was born Jefferson Hospital in Pine Bluff my family was military both mom and dad we lived there 1977-79 then left and been in Seattle Washington every since

I live here in the bluff! The violence is hard to deal with at times I've lived here now going on 10 years maybe 11 years and I've never seen it this bad!! I'm a mother of five there all grown except my little girl Raven she is six years old and attend Broadmoor elementary! When she home on the weekends on nice days of course she wants to go out and play in the freash air and sun shine but I'm afraid to let her go out very much because I'm afraid of her being shot that's a scary thought to say the least I'm sure that I'm not the only mother that feels this way.

Sadly it's the gangs and drugs that are the biggest issue, it has great potential and it would be awesome too see the city boom and bloom like the NW is doing but it takes people actually willing to change.

I am from Windsor, Ontario, Canada and we had our Casino on the Detroit river built in the mid 1990s...it didn't really help build up the city, especially when the auto industry went bust in Detroit and then across the river in Windsor!! It is still going, and Windsor is getting better in certain areas, but really just a University town now, and windmill factory...

My grandma was on her death bed so we spent alot of time at the hospital but driving around and seeing all the rundown buildings was nuts. We stayed at the motel 8 and the tenants were wild for sure playing guitars in the hallway begging me for money and shit in front of they kids I don't wanna get too petty but it definitely was an adventure lol
Pine Bluff, my birthplace, rich in history. The very first sit in for Civil rights in America was the lunch counter at Woolworths on Main street. I remember the colored water fountains. Prayers for PB.

Growing up in Pine Bluff it really did start going down hill in late 80s, but it didn't really start showing until early 00s. But for real white and black folks really do work together. It's not about white and black it's about rich and poor. I remember 1504 he used to stay over off elm street. That's crazy.

You so lost, more than half of the free black people fought for the south! A fact is less than 1/10th of Northern soldiers were free, but yet nearly 1/3rd of the African Americans that fought for the south were free.
