Hi bro I'm going to start answering you, it's that the big problem with metalcore is you too, metalcore evolves year by year, of course the metalcore of 2002 is different from 2009 from 2012 from 2020 from 2022, the music evolves, but to talk about the problem, you just talk about the big bands or precisely the most famous, Architects, A day To remeber, BMTH... but is metalcore just these bands????? no and no and no, this year is full of metalcore new albums and new singles and new EPs, here are some examples bro: InVisions - deadlock Dreamwake - Virtual Reality Saviour - Shine & Fade (and I think it's the best) Allt- The Seed Of Self-Destruction (a progressive metalcore cake) Hollow Front - The Price of Dreaming Bleed From Within - SHRINE RED HANDED DENIAL - I'd Rather Be Asleep (and the beautiful voice by lauren) Motionless In White - Scoring The End Of The World (and the best mixed between metalcore electronic and gothic metal) Secrets - The Collapse Spiritbox- Rotoscope (3 songs of medern metalcore/djent and proggy stuffs, also pop musics) Betraying The Martyrs - Silver Lining (and its a big EP) Villain of the Story- Divided (and the evolution of metalcore sound) and and and and and........ my brother, the problem is that you and the reacters want to react not to present 2nd class bands or underrated bands or also a 1st class bands, but you just want to react to a song that has made a trend, or react on the big bands or the famous ones so you just want a lot of views per video or likes so you're not helping metalcore so the problem is you, and also the metalcore public who don't want to evolve or support new bands or the best bands like Villain of the story or Hollow Front or Savior.... I noticed in 2021, there were no reactors who reacted to Like Moths To The Flame's huge EP, none, even in the top 10 EPs, oh my GOD In short, metalcore still alive, still best, evolving Thank you Hollow Front, Thank you Villain Of The Story, Thank you Savior, Thank you The wise mans fear, ...............................................................Thank you Thank you Thank you "Metalcore for life"

August Burns Red is an example of a band who has experimented but haven’t lost themselves completely imo. Some albums work better than others, but their talent level is insane.
Yes absolutely. They were one of my favorite bands with such a distinctive style but the last 3 Albums were all just all over the place... Went to their 10 Years of Constellations Tour though, since they were playing so many good songs.
I love this band so much but I have the feeling that they have past their prime, it looks like they are playing in smaller venues (at least in Europe) , they dont seem so popular right nowadays, what do you guys think ?
Red is very talented but I feel like the Christian label keeps them from going mainstream. Not that that is a problem. I think they are right where they want to be.
You don't have to follow your favorite bands wherever they go. Some of my favorite bands changed in ways I wasn't in love with, and it's nothing against the artist the way I see it. If you want to innovate do that, but you are not entitled to a certain reaction from a fanbase. People will love and hate whatever they will and if someone needs a fanbase to validate everything they do, then I personally have some real doubts about that person's ability to innovate.
Hey i fully agree with your frist point, but you should think a second time about the last one. I mean you do understand how bands or Music in general works, right? The money does not fall from trees. It only makes sense for bands to care, if people like thair music. xD
Thank you. Linkin Park once described albums as going on vacation: you don’t always have to go with them. Your artists would love for you to go with them if the location and time is for you. To that, I’d add it doesn’t mean you have to hate your friend because they’re going to a place this one time you don’t want to go to, you know? To boot, you have your photo albums of all the prior places you went with them that you can revisit WHENEVER you want (using an analogy for all their albums you DO adore), and you have all of those memories and experiences to relive whenever you wish, too. Thank you for how you put that 🤝
Just saw erras headline tour with alpha wolf, thornhill and invent animate and I can confidently say that all of these bands deserve so much more recognition. All 4 of them live were just perfect and so tight
Thornhill is so dope man. I didn’t their new album at first cause the mix so weird. The really remind me of Deftones and I love that. And the dude from Alphawolf instantly gained my respect when last week I saw him, ON STAGE, speaking up about venues taking 20% of the merch sales they make. Seeing them next month and really excited
My problem with PWD's change isn't in the sound. It's in the lyrics. It just sounds really cheese now, whereas their older albums have some of the most profound lyrics I've ever heard. Same with Architects, but harder to fault them for the change in their lyrics, since Tom was the main writer for lyrics, and passed away. 100% agree with Invent Animate. It's criminal how that band is not talked about enough.
@Madden 07 Soundtrack Fan Account [Kendrick AOTY] Holy Hell was a great album for sure, but I doubt they'll ever surpass All our Gods (at least for me, anyway. I know that's subjective)
@Madden 07 Soundtrack Fan Account [Kendrick AOTY] It's the "best" lyrically to you. I'd rather listen to The Here and Now than Holy Hell because HH is boring as all fuck
My biggest problem I have with metalcore is that an unfortunate amount of songs are centered around the breakdown. The song itself will be okay, but you can really tell that they just care about the breakdown.
Yeah, I agree. While She Sleeps imo is a band who does not follow this formula fortunately. Don't listen to them a whole lot but their dynamics and song structure always sticks out from the rest imo.
Yes yes yes! I don't need a crazy breakdown every single time. But the problem is with the huge part of the community who almost DEMANDS these breakdown, like it's the only interesting thing for them.
Totally agree. Deathcore is a lot more innovative and interesting right now than metalcore. Really wanting to see someone lead the charge for metalcore!
TDWP, WCAR, FFAK, and Miss May I have stayed true to metalcore and are still underappreciated. To me Architects gets all the love and personally compared to the 4 others mentioned they are super boring
Did August Burns Red die? Is Devil Wears Prada not a band anymore 😂? Did As I Lay Dying fall apart again? Don’t think so. Deathcore is the furthest thing from “creative” 😂 talk about 90% of songs of a genre sounding the same and that’s deathcore
And then there is dance gavin dance. No one can deny the fact that as soon as you hear a song by them, you can feel that they’re having hella fun in the studio. It’s heavy, it’s funk, it’s math, it’s I dont even know anymore. I feel like my biggest gripe with alot of metalcore bands is that it’s stagnant and not as ”fun”. Feels like alot of bands are just doing this new octane core thing and call it a day. Edit: Norma Jean is another band that can experiment but still sound refreshing and nostalgic.
They aren't metalcore. They literally have their own sub-genre, Swancore. Which is just 15 bands that all sound like DGD, but it's not ripping off cause it's 'swancore'
DGD may be far removed from a lot of the stuff covered on this channel and specifically this video but I agree with you. Can’t deny the fact that they play some shit they love. It’s easily my favorite group of the past 10 years. RIP Tim
If metalcore is going to be good again, it needs to be hardcore again. Newer metalcore bands like END, SYSC, Chamber, Foreign Pain, Dying Wish, Knocked Loose, etc. are really what the genre needs to go back to.
I think Loathe with their I Let It In album is some of the best innovation for metalcore and while it's a rollercoaster of an album, I think it's a great example of how metalcore can be pushed into interesting areas while still being metalcore. I personally think that album is one of the best to come out in recent years.
Is it really innovation? I love "I Let it In", and "A Sad Cartoon" will forever be one of my top ten songs of all time, but it's really just a love letter to the early 2000's Alt and Prog scene. Isn't weird how the stuff from older generations seems refreshing now?
Eh, it’s a great album, but not that innovative. It’s heavily reminiscent of Deftones, which isn’t a bad thing, but still, not that unique or groundbreaking.
@@widexawake_ It's innovative because they're taking ideas we've heard before and injecting them in a way we HAVEN'T heard before. Go listen to Erik's production on Rouge Carpet Disaster, there's nothing in emo punk that sounds like that shit.
This is why I feel like I've drifted a little from metalcore and more into prog metal / rock bands like Animals as Leaders, Polyphia, Chon, Plini, Jason Richardson, Angel Vivaldi, many of your standard instrumental guys. Even Fire from the Gods, Northlane, Skyharbor, Volumes, The Contortionist, basically any band that's not so concerned with fitting into rigid genre boxes. I really dig when bands experiment with other genres and even collab with artists from outside of the genre. I'm still into the core, but sometimes I need a little more emotional variety.
I think Trivium have moved on from metalcore itself, but it wasn't a drastic change. They just moved on to melodic metal, and they're thriving like crazy right now. They're my favorite band of all time and I absolutely love what they're doing
Trivium has always been pretty versatile I think. They do a good job of throwing in a taste of different sub-genres without ever straying too far from their original sound. Funny enough I feel like their last few albums are more similar to their early stuff but with all the added experience and expertise that comes with being around for so long.
Amen! Trivium had a little Letdown after loosing Travis as their Drummer but since 2017 they have Alex Bent and their last Three Albums are over the Top. It's like He gave them the Old Spirit back👌🏻
I was obsessed with The Dark Pool album from Thornhill that alternative metalcore style was incredibly well done my favorite metalcore album I've had in years. That sound is the future of metalcore. I was so underwhelmed with their new album/sound the mixing is so muddled and you can barley hear Jacobs vocals a damn shame because he has such a unique voice.
I totally agree. I couldn’t stop listening to Dark Pool and was so excited for the new album. Then they began to release the singles and I was super disappointed. I just can’t get into the whole Deftones/shoegaze (I think that’s the proper term) sound. Maybe if it was a different band it would be fine, but for Thornhill to release that? Major bummer.
It's funny to see how different people react to new albums. I really enjoyed The Dark Pool as well but I thought that Heroine was the perfect next time. Great song with catchy vibes and most importantly, not a The Dark Pool 2
I used to be a mostly metalcore listener, but recently discovered some great deathcore bands like WITHIN DESTRUCTION, Lorna Shore (ofc), BoS, FFAA and I love the variety all these bands have
My take on this topic: I'm now in my mid-30s. I was a teenager in highschool during that "golden" metalcore era in the mid 2000's. I've matured, and along with that, so have my music tastes and general style. While I do still love the 2000s sound, it's now something I listen to for nostalgia more than current desire. I've accepted bands change in time. If I'm allowed to grow as a person, it's not fair to think guys the same age as me in metalcore bands don't want to grow as people as well. Is it always for the good in their album sound? Nope. But let them figure that out. I don't always like the direction bands go but that's life I guess. There are always new bands to explore and you can go reminisce on hundreds of albums from the last decade.
Yeah same...it kinda sucks when bands you loved the sound of go in a direction you dislike, but to be real it's happened so many times to me i just move on and listen to something new. There's so much music out there that getting sad/mad about disliking a band you liked isn't worth it lol
Pretty much exactly what I said. We have all that good stuff from these bands already. They grind it out playing in shitty venues for a decade. They deserve the fruits of their labor damn it lol. You could be the best damn cashier in the supermarket but if someone wants to make you a manager you’re gonna do it for the pay. Evolve or die.
Totally agreed. I'm at a point in my life where I'll listen to just about anything if it sounds good to me. I'm not typically too happy about bands changing their sound drastically, but there's plenty that I do enjoy quite a bit.
@Jolin Alexandernobody just stating facts. It's always been the underground metal core for me and of course it's not dead but I know I don't speak for everyone
That’s why I love when every band I listen to comes out with a new style and sometimes they can come up with heavier stuff from their olds or even something that becomes the new heavy but even than if a bands goes a less heavy stuff I enjoy gives me a new thing to look forward to when I keep listening to a band
An entire video about metalcore and I don’t think I heard you mention August Burns Red once. They are a great example of, in my opinion, a top tier 00’s metalcore band that hasn’t “sold out” and is still putting out amazing and innovative music. All of there new albums are distinctly different yet you know it’s ABR.
7:00 that point is exactly what my last band was doing and my current band is doing. Trying not to stick too much to one style, because we love a lot of different stuff, so from the beginning we're doing a bunch of stuff. Some Deathcore type stuff, some NY Hardcore ish stuff, Metalcore, etc
Deftones and Thall track confirmed for next Termina! Haha I agree man deathcore has been much more experimental lately and really pushing the boundaries, lot of good hardcore and metalcore but alot is going back to the old school which I love. Wave war, erra and Invent animate are some good modern ones like you said . I see core more as one genre nowadays which is crazy but alot of bands are blending it like you and Termina under the umbrella of modern metal. Much love dude! ❤️
hit it on the head with the bands coming out of Japan right now they have so much variety in their metal its crazy. i just think they dont tour in america all that often so they get overlooked. i mean crossfaith is finally doing a headline american tour in what seems like forever and then theres crystal lake and coldrain that dont get talked about nearly enough in the music scenes or any major tour.
i’ve always loved bands that experiment and blend genres. i think spiritbox, ice nine, and motionless are innovating while still keeping one foot in the core. i don’t think most fans realize that they’d be unhappy getting the same thing over and over again
I used to love I9K, but man I just can’t get down with their obsession with shitty 80’s horror movies. It seems like such a gimmick because those guys are so talented.
i dont even care that much, when anyone asks me what i listen to i just say metal, wether its deathcore metalcore black metal or whatever at the time that peaks my interest and sounds fire.
One band that has never gone away and always owned their sound and in my opinion wrote some of their best stuff recently is the devil wears Prada. Even with several line up changes, their past few EPs slap, and I’ve been listening to them since 2008.
Id have to disagree, though I too have been listening since HTML Rulez d00d. In my view, they stopped being good at 8:18, with 8:18 being their last good LP. Z2 was incredible. I'm not saying they need to be heavy, but the way they do their screams/singing. Is is such an angsty and cry-baby-boo-hoo style, it bugs me. The music itself isn't bad, the lyrics are pretty damn great, but the vocals kill it for me starting with Transit Blues and After. I understand what they are trying to get at with their vocal change, but it just isn't for me, and I dislike it one heck of a lot. It's hard for me to listen to them.
@@danielbrawner3677 with roots above and branches below used to be my favorite album. I thought their first few albums without James and chris were meh. Then Daniel left so I wrote them off for a few years. I guess the vocal change doesn’t seem to bother me as much as it does you, but I see what you mean. It definitely has shifted, Jeremy plays a much bigger role now. I think it has to do with helping mike recover between live shows, because with the volume of screaming he was doing, he sounded terrible by the 8:18 days.
Really glad you made this video. It's something that's been frustrating to me with some bands is they change their sound to appease the radio rock scene instead of trying new experiments to their sound. I don't hate all the new songs that have been coming out, but I can't help myself when a band makes the same song as the next band. It's really hard to take the genre seriously when bands follow trends instead of their musical creativity. It's a risk and I know they do it to make a living, but it's hardly an excuse when it's literally the same song over and over again. Breakdowns don't help a song either. They're cool but not essential. It's just a shame and it leaves a lot of fans disappointed.
I agree. I think whitechapel killed their “transitional” style and really bright a mix of old and new with their last two records. The metal community is too close minded on bands doing new shit. You don’t have to love it but that doesn’t mean it’s objectively bad.
What's interesting to me is that I wasn't really understanding or agreeing with what you meant for the first 4 minutes or so about there being not many interesting metalcore bands any more, but then you went and listed off basically every band I listen to the most at the moment (bury tomorrow, crystal lake, trivium, bleed from within, bullet) and I kind of realise that I do agree with you 100%, I just didn't really think of it this way, I just stick to the bands I know and love.
This is why I feel bands like Ice Nine Kills and Bring me the Horizon are really in a great position. Their sound has been diverse from the start, allowing them to do whatever they want sonically. Those two bands and bands following in their footsteps absolutely get it. I mean, look at Bad Omens. The key is you cannot just do one thing, because the minute you try something different people will get upset. If you’re going to try new styles you NEED to blend that into your current sound or it will sound drastic.
That's not exactly true. People were PISSED at BMTH when they released Sempiternal and Ice Nine Kills just didn't have as big of a fanbase to care. Even ADTR, who has never been a flat out metalcore band and has always had a diverse sound, got tons of hate last year for not releasing a straight up metalcore album.
I really love die 4 u it's a Good song and I still remember when they sounded like alternative rock but I was Glad when they sounded like metal core again
My problem with most bands that change genres is that the change stylistically speaking is so sudden that it really splits the audience and fan base. There are only a few bands who were able to switch genres successfully but the two that immediately come to mind are bmth and Paramore. Bmth obviously started as a deathcore band and over time became a more alternative metal band and has been super successful doing so. And although Paramore are not metal their transition from pop punk to pop rock is almost seamless. If bands took time to slowly evolve like these two bands did then I think they would have a really good mix of new and old fans. Just my thoughts tho.
Don't really agree with your take on Paramore. They changed their sound pretty drastically between Brand New Eyes in 2009 and their Self-titled in 2013. They lost a lot of fans but tapped into the "normies" crowd which gained them a ton of followers and made it look like they hadn't split their fan base.
So you want bands to not follow the direction that they want to? To give you an extra album between what they had released and what they want to release? Like is that the same T.V series between seasons? you want a mid break season to fill the gap if it isn't a direct follow on? Like yes that would make things easier for people to adjust. but it also may not be what the band want to play and may not be what they enjoy playing. I'm all for bands changing their sound if they want. It's their careers and they are they ones having to play the music all the time. let them do as they please. if it doesn't float ya boat then only listen to the songs you like. its our jobs as consumers to use the products we like not criticize the people who release things we don't like.
@@timmayo7014 yeah I understand what you're saying. They should make what they want. A huge jump in genre is bound to lose fans and that's ok because like you said they can always listen to songs they like. I don't really care about bands changing and evolving their sound as long as it's done right. I'll use architects for example. They've played metalcore for so long and became masters at the genre and they set an expectation for their fans of good metalcore music. But with their most recent song tear gas it was a massive jump in genre and the fan base was incredibly split. It's not their fault alone, it's definitely mine and a lot of other listeners for having that expectation but the expectation was there nonetheless and the end result was disappointing when you were expecting metalcore. After going back to it I enjoy it for what it is but a good amount of people aren't even willing to go back and listen to it a second or third time.
Whitechapel did a really good job of navigating through new genres as well. Coming from being an OG deathcore pioneer, the fact that they were able to change their sound as much as they have and not lose footing with their fanbase is impressive.
@Madden 07 Soundtrack Fan Account [Kendrick AOTY] you think a thousand suns is the most influential linkin park record and you think The Plot In You is goated.
The difference is, they have evolved pretty much every album since The Artist in the Ambulance and did it well. So you know the next record will sound different. Lots of these bands established themselves with a certain sound and then changed and the change was done poorly.
Deathcore scene is absolutely exploding right now. I couldn’t have found a better time to get into extreme metal than I have now. Been enjoying so many different bands from all over the world and they can take so many genres and blend them together while still remaining “deathcore”.
Motionless in White have been growing musically as a band, but still consistently deliver that metal core sound and style better and better with each album. Their newest one was amazing!
yeah I really think they just try to better and hone their technique as they grow and learn as people. I wasn't much of a motionless in white fan growing up but I've been getting more into their music lately to a point where I can go back and appreciate older songs. music doesn't have to be linear
There is a difference between experimenting within other heavy metal genres and changing to an alternative butt rock band. It seems like most metalcore bands always experiment going soft. I can listen to the heavy (metalcore, deathcore, etc.) all day, but I also don't mind some pop, EDM, rap. However, butt rock is something I just can't get into and unfortunately this is where every metalcore band seems to want to expand to.
One band that comes to mind is Ice Nine Kills, who definitely have their own thing going for them, while also keeping that metalcore sound while also changing things up and growing their fan base. Been a huge fan of them since 2015 and they’ve never grown stale for me
Just get love to band, it’s a really hard scene, if you like a long tell them, if you don’t just don’t talk and pass, let metal core scene grow, diversify, let people discover by more main stream song and little by little like more heavy song. Love on all band, love on nick, love on metalcore, take care y’all
The problem with metalcore is we should have got something else a long time ago. I feel like every decade gets its own sub genre of metal (thrash in the 80's, nu metal in the 90's etc) but we've kinda had metalcore for almost 20 years at this point with no new sub genre to take its place. I feel like djent is kind of that new sound but it's sort of more like a sub sub genre of metalcore and deathcore. So when the scene is constantly asking itself "why is the scene getting so stale?" I think the harsh truth is that its just overstayed its welcome until we get some new wave of metal that re-invents the wheel.
@@Magnetshroom i knew someone was gonna "um accchhhtttually" that part of my comment haha but yeah youre right. Plus 80's also had hair metal kinda thriving parallel to thrash
Not sure what genre Spiritbox classifies as anymore, but what they're doing recently especially with the Rotoscope EP is a prime example of what bands should be doing. Completely new industrial sound, yet it still sounded like Spiritbox and was of course a banger. They've been my favorite band for like a year and a half now, and I really hope the rest of the scene takes inspiration from them
Dude same, I've been playing the shit out of Spiritbox for the past couple years. I was shocked to learn that she was the vocalist in iwrestledabearonce too! Their first full length is still the best but I respect what they're doing
@@TheDerpp Courtney and Mike were both in IWABO together at the end. I preferred the stuff with the original vocalist better, just musically it was nuts
Dude, solid points. My band Countervail is set to release our album in September and we’ve been calling ourselves metalcore but I hope that doesn’t lump us in with certain expectations. We definitely have a few tracks that might fit better into a different subgenre but I hope people keep an open mind as long as the music is good
My band is basically a blend of alot of metals. We have straight up metalcore songs, we have some death metal inspired, some melodic, some groove metal. We start with a riff and let the song grow from there. I love metal core, 2000- preset day. But I started with Pantera there will always be influences
That's why your band won't ever be signed or actually do anything. It's difficult to be in a band because you have to accept that you are whatever your most popular thing is and do just that.
I don't care what subgenre of metal the bands play, as long as it's good and throws in a BLEGH somewhere. But seriously: We need bands to inovate and experiment with their music. I mean, that's basically how all new genres are made: Experimentation. I'd love to see some deathcore band throw in an accordion or bagpipes or some such shit.
Give the song BSDK.exe by Bloodywood a try. The band basically an Indian Linkin Park with traditional culture and we have Corey Taylor doing the screams
In the end, vocalists can't stress their vocals so much after a certain age and they change as people, what they take insperation from, their target audience and what they want to do. There will always be new bands that will their own cool and new stuff and the artists that change their sound with both pusshing the boundaries of the genre and metal and/or metalcore scene itself
Not necessarily true, all about technique and looking after yourself! A lot of vocalists/band members have partied, enjoyed themselves (as the ABSOLUTELY should do) and it takes its toll! Someone like Matt Heafy is a great example of how to evolve and keep yourself going! The guy screams every day pretty much and still sounds fantastic!
So, we currently have: Oceans ate Alaska, Invent Animate, Loathe, Northlane, Thornhill, Spiritbox, Silent Planet, Erra, Currents, Novelists(i like their old stuff more), Veil of Maya, Ice Nine Kills, Alpha Wolf, Volumes, Sleep Token, Make Them Suffer, Fit for a King, Like Moths to Flames, August Burns Red, Hollow Front, Allt, Imminence(hope they could bring us some old stuff). Most of these bands have much unique stuff
I really miss some of the few easycore/pop punky stuff where everyone wasn't so serious all the time and was able to take the piss once in a while to make something light hearted (the album common courtesy, electric callboy, even attack attack! being some of my examples) Either I'm not looking hard enough, or that's just how the scene is for now
That's a thing... while deathcore bands experiments, huge metalcore bands like parkway drive turn into radio rock and follow tropes of other stale genres, not much of an experiment if you ask me. Latest Silent Planet album is full of experiments and all i see is almost universal support. Northlane experiment a lot, no negative reception there either, so maybe not a genre ceiling is a problem but a bands themeselves.
One Band that always pops into my head when talking about new experiences ans different styles, even within one album, is Heaven Shall Burn. The Band members always say in interviews that always have a curtain concept in mind and just play and try different stuff until they believe it sounds good And holy shit it does sound good Would love to see you talk about them aswell
They're well known but there's a good chance Nik doesn't know them. DTOP and iconoclast are top tier albums. More in common with the Gothenburg sound than what NA'ricans consider metalcore though.
I think a lot of metalcore bands trying too hard to write complicated and technical songs but they forget to write fun songs. And it's hard to write some technical songs and still be fun to listen to. But for me, one of the bands that managed to combine those two elements is Polaris. Their riffs are great yet so easy to process and enjoy. Hands down my favorite metalcore band.
Polaris are likely going to lean heavier towards the progcore. They’re pretty niche on the metal spectrum, attract haters by the dozen for whatever reason (clean vocals, most likely), but I expect their next album to go pretty hard.
Polaris are a very good band but also suuuuper generic. I think their songwriting is top notch but as of now they aren't one of the bands pushing the genre forward. Bands like loathe, northlane, alpha wolf, diamond construct and bad omens are the ones expanding the boundaries of metalcore.
It's interesting to me that the 3 main examples you give (PWD, Architects & BMtH) are the bands were the vocalists are losing voice or atleast show signs of losing voice. It might have something to do with that aswell.
Really cool that you mentioned Invent Animate.. They are literally changing the game and it's by far the best and most exciting Modern Metal band in my books! They deserve to be alooooot bigger and do Headliner Tours
Breakdowns in metal music were not always slow. While many breakdowns are characterized by a slower tempo, heavy guitar riffs, and a deliberate rhythmic structure, the concept of a breakdown doesn't strictly adhere to a slow pace. The defining feature of a breakdown is the shift in dynamics, rhythm, and often an emphasis on a repetitive and powerful motif. That said, I have no idea why metalcore and deathcore bands chose to make these oversimplified breakdowns that mostly sound the same, that basically sound like the band is having a stroke in unison. There are much better breakdowns in other genres that actually drive the song. But to each their own.
metal breakdowns were always slow. hardcore breakdowns were always fast and metalcore is a subgenre of hardcore. deathcore breakdowns are obviously slower than typical hardcore breakdowns but still more influenced by hardcore than metal breakdowns. metal breakdowns don't even sound remotely similar to breakdowns in metalcore or deathcore.
2:12 is my favorite part of the video lol. I've had a hard time getting into modern metalcore because I miss the melodeath riffs from the 2000s (which is why I liked the genre in the fist place, moreso than breakdowns). Happy that at least August Burns Red keep putting out quality stuff while changing slight details in their sound. With that said, Invent Animate is by far my favorite newer band because of the ambience in their songs, more metalcore bands should aim for that imo. That Wage War style metalcore doesn't appeal to me at all, a lot of it just sounds like heavier butt rock with a breakdown shoehorned in.
I think some of the best songs and albums are from experimental faces from bands, its sad to see people shit on something just because it isn’t what they always listen to
LMTF is always a band I think of that has tried a few different things but as a whole have stayed true to their sound. I can throw on any song by them from any album and its a jam.
Bro I’ll proudly be put in the metalcore box. I freaking love that genre it has so much potential to be creative with the metal side and pop side of it.
@@GuyLovesAnOnion True. They were def outside my comfort zone when I first started listening coming mainly from metalcore. Going down the rabbit hole and discovering bands like Spawn of Possession and Archspire is wild.
it made me so happy that you mentioned Invent, Animate because they're probably one of the most underrated bands out there right now. they're truly something special
My only comment / opinion is the concept of side projects that most artists do when they want to experiment. I personally think that is the best way to go when it comes to any band whether it be metalcore or any genre. You come across issues where you want a band to grow and evolve and the band itself may want to have a different sound or evolve their sound eventually. The issue comes across when you have too many members of the band having too many different opinions on which direction the sound should go to. When that happens you end up with a band that releases an album that normally comes out to mediocre reviews and is usually the album you put mid to last on your list when your asked what are your favorite albums from that band. Also that's why most people always say eventually why can't this band sound like they used to. The most common thing I keep hearing when I talk to people about music and new albums coming out they're usually hoping it sounds like their old stuff. I'm just going to use a very mainstream band as an example. Take Disturbed, in my opinion they haven't come out with a decent album in years. Their last album evolution in my opinion was a very egocentric album based off of them wanting to evolve and for some reason make an acoustic album. It didn't come out good and if you look at the sales the chart numbers and just the overall reviews from RUclips creators to the magazines. Now they're coming out with a new album which they even said it sounded more like 10,000 Fists or around that era. It's a very common theme so in my opinion why can't the metal core bands stay the same evolve in that type of sound because it is possible to change in the range of your original sound. Then if anyone wanted to try a different sound in the band they could either break off and do their own thing or if they all agree to go and sound different they could easily make two bands with the same members and have two different sounds. That way you keep your core base fans and make them happy and you also don't alienate them by releasing something Progressive that they may not like but you will also cater to the people who want to hear new stuff all the time. I think a good example for this is Slipknot, Corey Taylor, Stone Sour, Puscifer, tool, A Perfect Circle. In my opinion those bands did it correct. They kept their core band the same but created other bands to follow other Musical avenues that they wanted to follow either individually or together.
I hate to say it, but this is a great example of the fans that are stuck in their bubbles. The bands that Nik lists off as the future of metalcore, that are “innovating”, are actually the ones that are part of the problem. These bands, like Erra, Northlane, invent animate, wage war, spiritbox etc…they literally circle jerk around each other. They all try so hard to be part of the trend, not setting the trend. All the same types of breakdowns, same fry vocals, same weedly guitar licks, same hazy videos…that’s not innovation. Plus, that sound has been around since the early 2010’s. One more big point is that those bands literally didn’t even evolve from metalcore…they evolved from Djent and prog. Where is the Hardcore in metalcore these days?? Ever wonder that? The uptempo riffs? The “fans” are forgetting what metalcore is all about and try to change the definition. Metal and hardcore. Do they know what hardcore is? This is why hardcore and metalcore bands that properly incorporate the hardcore sound are growing beyond what we ever would have thought possible. Bands like Turnstile, ice nine kills, knocked loose, motionless etc. are bands that don’t give af about fitting in and stay true to their sound. Modern metalcore = Trendcore
One metalcore act I haven't seen mentioned yet is: Ithaca. They actually just released a new album They Fear us. I think they are a band well worth following.
ABR has stayed heavy and true to their sound, and that's why they're the Goats of the genre, imo. Also why they probably had a T-shirt a few years ago that said "Still Heavy".
Don't forget that metalcore has been around since the early 90's (bands like Congress, Arkangel, Integrity, Earth Crisis, Merauder...), the genre has reinvented itself already a couple of times and will continue to do so. Sure, deathcore might be a little bit ahead right now but it's also a younger genre, and it will get its dip sooner or later.
The transition to radio rock makes a lot of bands sound similar. I've heard a bunch of songs from big bands recently which I thought just sounded softer and simpler making em boring
Personally, I just love anything Architects does because it's always top notch. Though I like their new sound less with the last 2 singles, I still find it amazing quality and fun. Idc if a band I love changes their sound. All I want to stay the same is the music hitting me soul and feeling that beautiful, emotional, genius, passionate expression that I've come to love from certain bands like architects. They're just too good at what they do to for the music to become shallow or lose that spark of the human spirit that they communicate so impressively. Bands can do as they please as long as they have passion for it, but to lose that quality would make me sad
This is why it’s great to see bands like Sleep Token really pushing the boundaries of what a genre even is. It’s difficult to pull off. But when it’s done right you get the full spectrum of music at your disposal with zero limits and a huge open door for fans of many different tastes. Which is why what ST is doing is a prime example, they maintain a consistent IDENTITY regardless of what style any one song is in. They all sound or feel like Sleep Token. Probably doesn’t hurt that he’s writing some deeply impactful stuff too
@@MrAnalyptic I can’t say I have that experience with them when listening on my own time. It may not have the same effect that listening to a Slaughter To Prevail song has or whatever where you just get amped from it. But when you’re in a slower paced contemplative mood it’s absolutely a “vibe”….also good for secks making lol
I think Loathe, Sleep Token, Invent Animate, and Erra are all the future of Metalcore. They're constantly pushing boundaries and changing the game. In my opinion, they are saving the genre and bringing in way more listeners because they're genre pushing and experimenting constantly.
@@Vixfor_ Northlane is definitely one of the biggest tone setters for the scene right now. Almost every band has hints of Northlane, especially Loathe and Invent Animate
Genre blending is probably what creates my favourite music of all time, but I think it's just very hard to do and a lot of bands that try it fail because you really have to be a deep fan of multiple genres to really understand them and blend them well.
Really cool vid man, nice to just talk it through. Just a suggestion for a vid I would love to see, your Top 5 "innovative" bands for each respective sub-genre. Invent Animate as an example for Metalcore, Lorna and Darko for deathcore etc. You kinda touched on it and I'd love to see it as a vid 💕 Love your work
I would also suggest to look at bands like Void of Vision and Allt. Not many are talking about them, but personally I see a lot of potential in them to give some push for metalcore to evolve as a genre.
I was just talking to a friend the other day about how without a Warped Tour or festival equivalent, the bands in the scene have practically been forced into a loss of identity or artificial maturity. What is mature in metalcore? Simplified song structures, forced anthems, a more somber tone. I would love to see a metalcore band just go for something fun rather than being super serious and tacking a breakdown onto what boils down to a Three Days Grace b-side. Electric Callboy are nostalgic for the electronicore/crabcore crowd but they still do something new. I also have to say that any modern band that’s tried replicating 2000s metalcore just haven’t hit the mark. Bury Tomorrow and Miss May I are probably the closest to me but even they’re honestly older bands at this point. I’m interested in the future of metalcore. Watching bands like Sleeping With Sirens and Asking Alexandria scramble to get radio rock crowds and fit on red state rock festival bills has been an interesting reality. Painful though.
There are lots of bands here in Europe who mix metalcore with some folk elements, like Dirty Shirt or E-an-na, the later one even going viral for playing at a weeding.
I love how critical we are as a community but it’s totally cool because we all kinda know it’s and our own flaws and are open to just accepting it for the most part. Sometimes the open ended talk helps us grow. We’re passionate for sure.
It’s because it’s basically all been done before, I’m surprised that Metalcore is actually living a longer life than nu metal, and plus they’re tuning like 2/3 octaves lower today, I remember the days when 6 and 7 string guitars were enough
I really like this kind of video. I think I felt the same way with a lot of post-hardcore bands becoming metalcore-like. I also get why people would keep to what they like and get pretty defensive when it comes to changes in their favourite artist's style. At the end of the day we're all gonna be listening to Never Gonna Give You Up By Rick Astley once in a while anyways.
I agree with you about the modern deathcore sound being more exciting and fresh to listen too compared to the metalcore. I was never really into deathcore until I heard Orphan by Whitechapel I still to this day have that song on repeat and this is an example of them experimenting and trying out new things aside from the heavy growls and roars and cause of bands doing this it has got me more into the deathcore genre
Sad but true... But I'm always shocked that you never talk about German Metalcore and Melodic Death. Many of the problems you mention are not that bad here. Hevean Shall Burn albums are now number 1 in the charts here. There is also a lot more than Electric Callboy, wbtbwb and Convmer.
Check out the and ‘Rouge’ if you haven’t already. I’ve binged them on repeat for the past few months. Their songs Homo Sapien and Archetype are probably my favorites. So heavy.
I still think there's a lot of exciting things happening in the metalcore scene, even if the bands of before are starting to move away from that sound. I mean you can't tell me bands like Currents, Silent Plant and The Wise Man's Fear aren't keeping the genre strong
Loathe Silent Planet Underoath Norma Jean Two relatively new, two metalcore OG’s. All four innovating and adding fresh unique sounds to the scene while remaining, truly, undeniably metalcore. Honorable mentions to Thornhill & Spiritbox whose new releases I still find core-adjacent. And how would you even classify DGD’s most recent record, discocore? Genres are occasionally helpful, but kinda stupid Edit: forgive me father for I have sinned in leaving off August Burns Red 🤦♂️
ABR and Invent Animate are both my favorite Metalcore bands!!! And the best part about them is they are trying new things but they still have the same signature sound that I love!! Also about Bring me the Horizon, I like how they are evolving and just doing whatever they want and I think that’s awesome.
I'm working on a song in the mid 2000s Emo rock style but with modern production. Like 3 sweet cheers for revenge with modern influences. I have been doing metalcore for over a decade and I feel like it's time to find my roots.

The devil wears Prada is a perfect example.
Hi bro
I'm going to start answering you, it's that the big problem with metalcore is you too, metalcore evolves year by year, of course the metalcore of 2002 is different from 2009 from 2012 from 2020 from 2022, the music evolves, but to talk about the problem, you just talk about the big bands or precisely the most famous, Architects, A day To remeber, BMTH... but is metalcore just these bands?????
no and no and no, this year is full of metalcore new albums and new singles and new EPs, here are some examples bro:
InVisions - deadlock
Dreamwake - Virtual Reality
Saviour - Shine & Fade (and I think it's the best)
Allt- The Seed Of Self-Destruction (a progressive metalcore cake)
Hollow Front - The Price of Dreaming
Bleed From Within - SHRINE
RED HANDED DENIAL - I'd Rather Be Asleep (and the beautiful voice by lauren)
Motionless In White - Scoring The End Of The World (and the best mixed between metalcore electronic and gothic metal)
Secrets - The Collapse
Spiritbox- Rotoscope (3 songs of medern metalcore/djent and proggy stuffs, also pop musics)
Betraying The Martyrs - Silver Lining (and its a big EP)
Villain of the Story- Divided (and the evolution of metalcore sound)
and and and and and........
my brother, the problem is that you and the reacters want to react not to present 2nd class bands or underrated bands or also a 1st class bands, but you just want to react to a song that has made a trend, or react on the big bands or the famous ones
so you just want a lot of views per video or likes
so you're not helping metalcore
so the problem is you, and also the metalcore public who don't want to evolve or support new bands or the best bands like Villain of the story or Hollow Front or Savior....
I noticed in 2021, there were no reactors who reacted to Like Moths To The Flame's huge EP, none, even in the top 10 EPs, oh my GOD
In short, metalcore still alive, still best, evolving
Thank you Hollow Front, Thank you Villain Of The Story, Thank you Savior, Thank you The wise mans fear, ...............................................................Thank you Thank you Thank you
"Metalcore for life"

August Burns Red is an example of a band who has experimented but haven’t lost themselves completely imo. Some albums work better than others, but their talent level is insane.
Yes absolutely. They were one of my favorite bands with such a distinctive style but the last 3 Albums were all just all over the place... Went to their 10 Years of Constellations Tour though, since they were playing so many good songs.
love every single one of them
I love August Burns Red
I agree. Saw them in Vancouver and they all blew me away
Seen them in Anaheim! Amazing show!
Just saw this lineup last Saturday and they were fucking amazing!!!!
Alpha Wolf is incredible live. Moreso than even their recorded stuff.
Yeah, for me it seems that they are out of ideas
Same with amity, every song is about death and dying but rather shallow. It’s unhealthy he’s like 40 not 14 anymore
@Madden 07 Soundtrack Fan Account [Kendrick AOTY] Holy Hell was a great album for sure, but I doubt they'll ever surpass All our Gods (at least for me, anyway. I know that's subjective)
Parkway Drive never topped their first album,K.W.A.S was 🔥🔥
@Madden 07 Soundtrack Fan Account [Kendrick AOTY] It's the "best" lyrically to you. I'd rather listen to The Here and Now than Holy Hell because HH is boring as all fuck
My biggest problem I have with metalcore is that an unfortunate amount of songs are centered around the breakdown. The song itself will be okay, but you can really tell that they just care about the breakdown.
This....i agree so much.
Yup.
You are absolutely correct
Yeah, I agree. While She Sleeps imo is a band who does not follow this formula fortunately. Don't listen to them a whole lot but their dynamics and song structure always sticks out from the rest imo.
Yes yes yes! I don't need a crazy breakdown every single time. But the problem is with the huge part of the community who almost DEMANDS these breakdown, like it's the only interesting thing for them.
Totally agree. Deathcore is a lot more innovative and interesting right now than metalcore. Really wanting to see someone lead the charge for metalcore!
Yes 100%
👍👍👍👍
TDWP, WCAR, FFAK, and Miss May I have stayed true to metalcore and are still underappreciated. To me Architects gets all the love and personally compared to the 4 others mentioned they are super boring
Did August Burns Red die? Is Devil Wears Prada not a band anymore 😂? Did As I Lay Dying fall apart again? Don’t think so. Deathcore is the furthest thing from “creative” 😂 talk about 90% of songs of a genre sounding the same and that’s deathcore
@@litaf4889 It’s getting more creative. While metalcore is exactly what you just said deathcore is.
DGD isn’t really metalcore, they’re post hardcore and math rock
They aren't metalcore. They literally have their own sub-genre, Swancore. Which is just 15 bands that all sound like DGD, but it's not ripping off cause it's 'swancore'
@@metalblakedowns never said they were metalcore just wanted to mention them
DGD may be far removed from a lot of the stuff covered on this channel and specifically this video but I agree with you. Can’t deny the fact that they play some shit they love. It’s easily my favorite group of the past 10 years. RIP Tim
Great musicians but their music is so annoying
If metalcore is going to be good again, it needs to be hardcore again. Newer metalcore bands like END, SYSC, Chamber, Foreign Pain, Dying Wish, Knocked Loose, etc. are really what the genre needs to go back to.
It would be totally fine going back to At The Gates-times but the mainstream fusions generally don't work
and melodic metalcore
Melodic Metalcore and Metallic Hardcore are absolutely goats, that softboy architectcore garbage is the problem
I think Loathe with their I Let It In album is some of the best innovation for metalcore and while it's a rollercoaster of an album, I think it's a great example of how metalcore can be pushed into interesting areas while still being metalcore. I personally think that album is one of the best to come out in recent years.
We need more bands like Loathe, in my opinion their last album is one of the best productions in this scene
I agree, I love Loathe
I went back to my 2006-2009 metalcore.
I'm still into the core, but sometimes I need a little more emotional variety.
that’s why i love post hardcore cause you can have the heaviness of metalcore but also do so much more with it
Ice Nine Kills are doing a good job on expanding their Metalcore sound and incorporating new elements to it
I think Trivium have moved on from metalcore itself, but it wasn't a drastic change. They just moved on to melodic metal, and they're thriving like crazy right now. They're my favorite band of all time and I absolutely love what they're doing
exactly, they grew up in metalcore, but they've incorporated elements from a ton of different genres and they have solidified their own unique sound
Trivium always had that very thrashy vibe upon melodic metalcore, they always felt more different
Trivium has always been pretty versatile I think. They do a good job of throwing in a taste of different sub-genres without ever straying too far from their original sound. Funny enough I feel like their last few albums are more similar to their early stuff but with all the added experience and expertise that comes with being around for so long.
Trivium make great music so I don't care what the subgenre is called.
I used to be a mostly metalcore listener, but recently discovered some great deathcore bands like WITHIN DESTRUCTION, Lorna Shore (ofc), BoS, FFAA and I love the variety all these bands have
Born of Osiris is my fav band and Within Destruction is insanely underrated!!
FFAA was my introduction to deathcore and what an introduction it was. Those guys are tight.
Invent Animate is so heavily underrated it's a case for science. The most exciting band out there right now
The metal core is still out there. You got a reach for the hidden gems!
@@hepahnacountry2969 definetly dude.
@Jolin Alexandernobody just stating facts. It's always been the underground metal core for me and of course it's not dead but I know I don't speak for everyone
Same for Arcaeon, but to a MUCH larger degree for them.
Every ABR album sounds like ABR. They don’t need to change it up much because they do it so well.
I watched just to see if he would mention ABR.
Also immediately thought of ABR and how they continue to be pure metalcore.
7:00 that point is exactly what my last band was doing and my current band is doing. Trying not to stick too much to one style, because we love a lot of different stuff, so from the beginning we're doing a bunch of stuff. Some Deathcore type stuff, some NY Hardcore ish stuff, Metalcore, etc
so all trash, basically. Got it 👍

Yeah motionless in White Will always be Great
Dude for real. Like if parkway just kept that horizons and atlas type sound, it'd be way overdone by this point.
I used to love I9K, but man I just can’t get down with their obsession with shitty 80’s horror movies. It seems like such a gimmick because those guys are so talented.
You should listen to Avatar, each album is different from the other. They are amazing
@@ManG1aze Yeah I don't think parkway drive sounds like metcalcore anymore

One band that has never gone away and always owned their sound and in my opinion wrote some of their best stuff recently is the devil wears Prada. Even with several line up changes, their past few EPs slap, and I’ve been listening to them since 2008.
They are the best indeed
The act was the odd one out
Their latest singles are some of the best tracks I’ve ever heard, tell me Watchtower and Sacrifice aren’t a perfect blend of the old and new
@@danielbrawner3677 with roots above and branches below used to be my favorite album.
Anyone hear of the band "Across the White Water Tower"?? They were recently on the Attack! Attack! tour. They kick some serious arse!! 🤘🤘
nice that you mentioned ERRA, Crystal Lake and Alpha Wolf together because that could be my top 3 of modern metal
Exactly
Spot on. I love when a band changes.
@@ryanshinermusic tbf i think it just wasn’t a great album. It wasn’t bad tho for sure.
Being a lifelong Thrice fan has prepared me well to accept sound evolutions from my favorite bands. 😅
Don't like them...
90s is more of Groove metal. Nu metal is in 2000s especially Korn made it famous in 1998.
@@Magnetshroom i knew someone was gonna "um accchhhtttually" that part of my comment haha but yeah youre right. Plus 80's also had hair metal kinda thriving parallel to thrash
Music is music bro, timeless and endless, with only more to come.
We definitely have a few tracks that might fit better into a different subgenre but I hope people keep an open mind as long as the music is good
I will watch your career with great interest
Hahaha damn the sarcasm is thick my friend
@@Hideousspawn13 who's being sarcastic? I'm referencing Palpatine
Hahaha ok ok I’m too dumb to get the reference but if you’re not being sarcastic then thank you and sorry for letting my insecurities show 😅
Thornhill is the perfect example of a good experiment of DJENT pop and metal core
Scottish deathcore would be cool
deathcore band with an tagelharpa when
Give the song BSDK.exe by Bloodywood a try. The band basically an Indian Linkin Park with traditional culture and we have Corey Taylor doing the screams
Eluveitie, though not new, metalcore or deathcore by any means. First time I ever heard a pipe instrument in 2000s metal
Igorrr has some stuff kinda like this. Very good and would recommend if you've never listened
Not many people talk about modern Hardcore anymore. I really wish they did. Everyone tends to lean into metalcore/deathcore.
Currents, erra, and polaris are picking up where architects left off. Their stuff is next level.
Japan has a really banging modern metalcore scene, you should check out some of the bands (coldrain, Dimlim, Crystal Lake, Survive Said the Prophet).
@@jonnyb2020 he had to evolve. His unclean vocals were horrendous before.
I really miss some of the few easycore/pop punky stuff where everyone wasn't so serious all the time and was able to take the piss once in a while to make something light hearted (the album common courtesy, electric callboy, even attack attack! being some of my examples)
Either I'm not looking hard enough, or that's just how the scene is for now
Dragged under?
Video aside, I'd like to see you doing voiceovers or narrating or anything that showcases how your deep voice can be so soothing.
That's a thing... while deathcore bands experiments, huge metalcore bands like parkway drive turn into radio rock and follow tropes of other stale genres, not much of an experiment if you ask me. Latest Silent Planet album is full of experiments and all i see is almost universal support. Northlane experiment a lot, no negative reception there either, so maybe not a genre ceiling is a problem but a bands themeselves.
bruh I just saw ERRA, Invent Animate, and Alphawolf the other night I'm so excited that you mentioned them lol
One Band that always pops into my head when talking about new experiences ans different styles, even within one album, is Heaven Shall Burn. The Band members always say in interviews that always have a curtain concept in mind and just play and try different stuff until they believe it sounds good
And holy shit it does sound good
Would love to see you talk about them aswell
You have good taste
They're well known but there's a good chance Nik doesn't know them. DTOP and iconoclast are top tier albums. More in common with the Gothenburg sound than what NA'ricans consider metalcore though.
Also put some Neaera next to HSB, their self-titled comeback was ON FIRE! Too bad they don't get the same level of recognition for their work.
@@Jopeymessmusic i really want Nik to react to Endzeit, Counterweight, Hunters Will Be Hunted and Children of a lesser god
@@fredriksvard2603 thanks, you too
I think a lot of metalcore bands trying too hard to write complicated and technical songs but they forget to write fun songs. And it's hard to write some technical songs and still be fun to listen to. But for me, one of the bands that managed to combine those two elements is Polaris. Their riffs are great yet so easy to process and enjoy. Hands down my favorite metalcore band.
Definitely agree with this. I do feel like Polaris deserves way more love and credit than they get.
I think they’re really overrated, honestly. a solid band, but overrated
Polaris are likely going to lean heavier towards the progcore. They’re pretty niche on the metal spectrum, attract haters by the dozen for whatever reason (clean vocals, most likely), but I expect their next album to go pretty hard.
@@mattcook3801 I love when people don’t like clean vocals. It’s literally the dumbest thing so their opinions are easier to discount.😂
Polaris are a very good band but also suuuuper generic. I think their songwriting is top notch but as of now they aren't one of the bands pushing the genre forward. Bands like loathe, northlane, alpha wolf, diamond construct and bad omens are the ones expanding the boundaries of metalcore.
@@Jacksoncomplex you just called Polaris generic and then said that Bad Omens isn’t.. was that a typo bro?
It's interesting to me that the 3 main examples you give (PWD, Architects & BMtH) are the bands were the vocalists are losing voice or atleast show signs of losing voice. It might have something to do with that aswell.
Really cool that you mentioned Invent Animate.. They are literally changing the game and it's by far the best and most exciting Modern Metal band in my books! They deserve to be alooooot bigger and do Headliner Tours
Invent Animate and old ERRA are peak prog metalcore. Not enough people in the modern scene have heard Augment and Impulse.
Try miss may I. They kinda do that style
The revivalcore bands is where my heart is at the moment. Just found Foreign Hands from the STYG tour playlist and they’re great.
Then It Ends
I think some of the best songs and albums are from experimental faces from bands, its sad to see people shit on something just because it isn’t what they always listen to
LMTF is always a band I think of that has tried a few different things but as a whole have stayed true to their sound. I can throw on any song by them from any album and its a jam.
Agreed! They keep pushing themselves and still have that signature heaviness that they’re known for.
Bro I’ll proudly be put in the metalcore box. I freaking love that genre it has so much potential to be creative with the metal side and pop side of it.
Check out the band Inferi. Beautiful, insane melodic lines that are woven into absolute chaos. All instruments are otherworldly. Vocals are brutal.
They’re tech death but and very awesome
@@GuyLovesAnOnion True. They were def outside my comfort zone when I first started listening coming mainly from metalcore. Going down the rabbit hole and discovering bands like Spawn of Possession and Archspire is wild.
@@leku200 ARCHSPIRE are one of my favourites, been heavy into Shadow of Intent and Rings of Saturn if you haven’t checked them out
Try some fear and loathing in Las Vegas from Japan.
it made me so happy that you mentioned Invent, Animate because they're probably one of the most underrated bands out there right now. they're truly something special
They seriously are sooo talented. They deserve so much more attention
Don't know them, thank's to Nik I'm gonna check them out now.
I just saw them live and I agree they are a great band and can't wait to hear more music from them.
BMTH is literally successful band of genre Modern Metalcore, so many experimental and no bored everyone hearing
Probably doesn’t hurt that he’s writing some deeply impactful stuff too
Great band they are up there with the best I've seen live, I struggle to listen to them at home though it bores me.
Also Northlane, Thornhill, Spiritbox, Veil of Maya, Silent Planet, Oceans ate Alaska, Ice Nine Kills. Most of these bands have incredibly unique stuff
@@Vixfor_ Northlane is definitely one of the biggest tone setters for the scene right now. Almost every band has hints of Northlane, especially Loathe and Invent Animate
I would add Ice Nine Kills in there as well
Imma insert bmth into here. They’ve been pushing boundaries since the start (Ik they aren’t metalcore anymore but still).
Bad Omens as well…
Erra and alpha wolf hit a cheeky spot,
I wanna mention static dress for doing the myspace erra stuff and sounding fresh at the same time
Genre blending is probably what creates my favourite music of all time, but I think it's just very hard to do and a lot of bands that try it fail because you really have to be a deep fan of multiple genres to really understand them and blend them well.
Shout out to northlane our here doing the lords work.
Really cool vid man, nice to just talk it through. Just a suggestion for a vid I would love to see, your Top 5 "innovative" bands for each respective sub-genre. Invent Animate as an example for Metalcore, Lorna and Darko for deathcore etc. You kinda touched on it and I'd love to see it as a vid 💕
Love your work
Dayseeker is an example of a band who went softer and did it well
I would also suggest to look at bands like Void of Vision and Allt.
Hate me for this, but I feel like the new Attila album is gonna be pretty tight.
To be fair on Asking Alexandira though, they did it really well. Their last three albums, while not metalcore even remotely, are incredible, imho.
If you haven’t found the band ERRA you’re missing out 🤙🏽
I love how critical we are as a community but it’s totally cool because we all kinda know it’s and our own flaws and are open to just accepting it for the most part. Sometimes the open ended talk helps us grow. We’re passionate for sure.
The problem is lack of good riffs or solos in most newer bands.
It’s because it’s basically all been done before, I’m surprised that Metalcore is actually living a longer life than nu metal, and plus they’re tuning like 2/3 octaves lower today, I remember the days when 6 and 7 string guitars were enough
Listen to Arcaeon then.
yo nik i ve really been enjoying the 00s metalcore playlist you have on spotify. itd be amazing if you could make 1 for recent metalcore exclusively
0:42 we all know what band nik is thinking
enterprise earth mixes metalcore and deathcore really good
They really do. The check every fucking box of what I love about both genres.
Same for fit for an autopsy.
Loathe
Silent Planet
Underoath
Norma Jean
Two relatively new, two metalcore OG’s. All four innovating and adding fresh unique sounds to the scene while remaining, truly, undeniably metalcore.
Honorable mentions to Thornhill & Spiritbox whose new releases I still find core-adjacent. And how would you even classify DGD’s most recent record, discocore? Genres are occasionally helpful, but kinda stupid
Edit: forgive me father for I have sinned in leaving off August Burns Red 🤦♂️
ABR and Invent Animate are both my favorite Metalcore bands!!! And the best part about them is they are trying new things but they still have the same signature sound that I love!! Also about Bring me the Horizon, I like how they are evolving and just doing whatever they want and I think that’s awesome.
I'm working on a song in the mid 2000s Emo rock style but with modern production. Like 3 sweet cheers for revenge with modern influences. I have been doing metalcore for over a decade and I feel like it's time to find my roots.
