I mentioned something similar in a previous vid because metal HAS been "dead" for a good damn while. Or at least, the meme has been alive for a very long time throughout the 2000s. If that were not the case, then I am sure whatever is going on would not be going on. I even gave mention how Nik has his own "version" of metal but with other elements (Deathphunk). That speaks for itself. Not talking ill or anything mind you, I am glad that it has gotten to this point and am excited to see what direction it will go. The whole genre idea is stupid for listening anyway, great for marketing and discovering bands, but for actual day-to-day listening, I care more about the individual artist and whether or not I like their sound. For example, there's a lot of deathcore bands I love. But there's also a lot I don't like, and there's elements of the genre's sound I'm not super into. People hype over Electric Callboy and Sleep Token like they are the first to popularise this trend when they aren’t. To be fair though, there has always been a fair share of bland bands in metal, like the heaps of uninspired glam/hair metal bands in the 80s. So I guess it's not a problem that's exclusive to modern times. There's plenty of other cool stuff to listen to either way.

Glam and nu-metal felt like there were a lot of bands just jumping on the bandwagon to make a quick buck, very little of it felt genuine. Which is why I really respect bands like Iron Maiden, Slayer, AC/DC (Hardrock, I know) and Trivium, who more or less keep the same sound, but with nuanced differences still. I cannot really like the soft generic feeling metalpop songs of some of the new bands, they have a bit too much machine produced sounds and autotune sometimes. I feel very strongly that one of the best things about the genre, one of the most important pillars of metal is that in the grand scheme of musical tastes, not very many people like it.
If you suddenly thrust metal into the spotlight, into the ring, it will be stripped of its spirit, gutted, mass-produced and left to drown in the sea of every other band that lives or dies by its ability to produce a viral hit every few years in order to stay relevant.
Spiritbox will not survive with a Singles Ep when Doja Cat gets a billion clicks for a new hit that gets used in every Tiktok and summer blockbuster that year.
Metal needs its humble lesser fame. It needs awkward teenagers who don't feel understood, it needs conversations that start with "I don't know how you can listen to that noise", it needs $30 tickets to a band from your hometown.
Bring Me the Horizon represents the beginning of the end of metal as we know it. That's what I believe. I don't need a 15 seconds of fame Rap artist on my next Loathe album to prove to me its worth...

When Kurt Cobain, Nirvana, Grunge, Rap & Hip Hop came on the scene & rejected that shit like a plague & continued to search for hard rock/metal. Now I'm still searching for new rock & metal & it's better than ever! So many bands I can't keep up. The 90s was easily the worst decade ever! It was so hard to get through it. Some of my metalhead friends turned to rap. Others started listening to shit like The Cranberries. I'm glad rock & metal survived that nightmare.

Influencing everybody, doing their own thing, amassing a diehard audience (myself included), and overall being a band for people of all types. It's really cool to see. And, like Deftones, they're not JUST a gateway band. They get people into it, but those same people also stick with the band and keep that involvement, oftentimes diving deeper, so there are different types of listeners. For Deftones, you have the people that only listen to the big shit like Change, Drive, Passenger, etc, and then people diving into their less well-known stuff like 976-Evil. For Sleep Token, there are the people listening to The Summoning, Alkaline, Atlantic, and then the more devoted people listening to Jaws, Calcutta, Gods. The scene is more diverse and open than ever right now, even though the (idiotic) gatekeepers are still around in small pockets. I'm here for it, 100%.

I'm not convinced myself. I used to be proper into the scene along with many of my friends and I can't remember the last I heard a new band/song and got excited enough to actually get back into the swing of things. Fair to play those artists who seem to have garnered some mainstream attention but the barrier of entry is so how high now (especially with some of the subgenres) that to most people, myself included, a lot of it is completely unlistenable and I grew up loving this stuff. I think metal will probably ultimately end up a bit like jazz; have a very hardcore devoted and passionate fan base, occasionally be made reference to in pop culture, but ultimately stay outside the mainstream. Which is probably what most metalheads would want anyway so win win.

  • @stephenhughes5156

I think its also worth mentioning that we now have at least one band that has reached major festival headline level in the last few years (Gojira). It is something that was needed considering it has largely been the same bands headlining for the past 2-4 decades. And many of those bands are starting to reach the end of their careers. Parkway Drive is another one (headlined Wacken). To me, that is more important than whatever is going on in terms of mainstream approval.
I still think 80s/90s is by far the peak for heavy metal, and probably always will be. But there is still very good stuff being made. Alien Weaponry is one example of band that I've discovered in the last year that are freakin' awesome.
