- Lufthansa has announced it's completed the first-ever 12-year check on one of its Airbus A380s in company history as it continues to re-enter the plane to service. Meanwhile, Air New Zealand has cited a negative impact on its forecasted profits as it deals with additional competition from United Airlines, aircraft groundings and softer corporate demand. Comac has welcomed an order for 50 aircraft at the 2024 Singapore Airshow.

I recently flew a LH-A380 MUC-BKK it was fully booked in all classes. My first flight on an A380 and I was very impressed as to how quiet the cabin was
its been one of their busiest routes, pre-covid , I flew the FRA-BKK route twice, and it was probably 98% booked on the A340-500/600
Airbus planes are a lot quieter than Boeing planes, at least on the inside, which is my primary concern as a passenger.
The dreamliner isn't bad, but old 777s are horrendous!@@apveening
Glad to see the A380 back in service.
It is partly true,Air New Zealand is facing competion as more international airlines return to airports across new zealand But majority of flights are booked out fully,During and after the pandemic Christchurch airport was mainly dominated by Air NZ with some flights from Qantas And JetStar,Just recently United and Cathay Pacific returned to Christchurch which may impact the airlines profit,Not to mention the A380's return early last year.
Weak nz domestic market? There’s not been a spare seat on any flights I’ve taken recently, and they’re charging like a wounded bull
ANZ has no competition.
@@Secretlyanothername except on main trunk routes. Chc-wlg-akl
Interesting …. Wife works in corporate travel booking with ANZ, their demand level is that of 2019 and flights are regularly unavailable domestically or at maximum fare, to the point clients are trying to book months in advance rather than days/weeks as in previous year.
This is in line with what I'm seeing as well.
Yeah ANZ spurts a load of crap out, did you see their cry about the upgrade to Auckland Airport.
Last time I flew internationally, Air NZ fares in most cases were between $500 - $800 more for a round trip compared to some other airlines and that was just for economy. I welcome the competition as we here in NZ have always had to put up with sectors being monopolized.
Good to do another kiwi on here and agree with your comment
As a frequent Air NZ flyer for work, I welcome the competition. They’ve been horrendously over charging the last couple of years. Also, I’m surprised by your reports saying domestic demand is low. Every time I fly CHC-AKL-CHC, the flights are totally full with frequent delays/short notice schedule changes whilst paying what feels high ticket prices…
Geopolitics is also a reason the A380 is commercial viable again.
The closure of Russian federation airspace for western airlines means way longer and more expensive flights (read high ticketprices).
Slots are also expensive in Asian major cities airporst who experience a boom in passengers.
So the already paid off quad jets A340, A380 and B747-8 of Lufthansa make perfect sense now.
The oldest A340 are likely first to go when the new on order twin engined jets arive (A350-1000, B777-9X and B787-9)
It all depends of how long the dire straits Boeing is in now will last before delivery to customers continues.
It could mean that the A340 will fly longer much longer then expected.
Let's hope the 340 stays in operation with Lufthansa for a while longer.
@@r12004rewy Technicly they can be in service till max flightcycles for the airframe is reached. A full inspection a partial rebuild is then requiered but its often cheaper to get a brandnew aircraft.
The A340 is a long distance aircraft so they don't rack up flightcycles as fast as f.e. 737's on short routes like Ryanair.
Those aircraft are scrapped at 10-15 years Thats young when the average maxed out flightcycels on long distance used airframes is 30-35 years.
For trans Tasman flights - Air New Zealand is the absolute best !
Air New Zealand's issues are of their own making. They have taken a very loyal customer base for granted, their service level has been atrocious, their fares have been horrifically expensive, and the airline is very poorly led and managed. I have no sympathy for an airline that got rid of 8 x 777-200's at the start of the pandemic and is now complaining about capacity constraints.
Air New Zealand has low domestic demand - as they are screwing Kiwis on internal prices. Prices into New Zealand are cheaper coming from elsewhere, than the same flight as leaving here. Kiwis are using alternative airline flights for domestic travel.
Great that philiphines used to check 380"s hope keep up great work
Just the Air NZ news i was expecting-- more whining about competition. If the national carrier continues to offer the top quality fleet & service we're used to, we'll continue to support them. Simple as that
Air NZ complaining about competition and increased Airport charges while simultaneously gouging the domestic and short haul route prices is just standard at this stage.
How can they when their former CEO runs the country now
@@thepolishnz How can they What, exactly? Your question is 'empty'.
@@michaelosgood9876 it's sarcasm. Luxon who is the pm liked to go on about how air new Zealand was so successful because he was the CEO. It wasn't because of him. He came in and rode the coat tails of the previous ceos coasting on their success and he quit just before it came out he was ruining the airlines image and staff morale. He pretty much got in to office because the conservatives said he can run this country like a business
I'm hearing you. I personally believe he ordered the Wrong widebodies for Air NZ. The freakn' 787 10 for gods sake! We need ultra long haul widebodies for our network- not some Mickie Mouse medium to long hauler, which I very much doubt will have the range for the Pacific Rim routes required. 787 10 ER-- I'll believe it only when I see it...
Re: The A380 maintenance....It's called a D-Check...where they literally, completely disassemble the aircraft to the bare fusilage. Anything that can come off will be removed for detailed inspection.
Did that for my OJT on an old 321, a nice experience as I did it hands on and did things that normally I don’t do in line maintenance, such as riveting, painting, flaps rigging and adjusting, cabin windows replacing and other things that normally I will not do that often.
The Comac order comes as a bit of a surprise to me. I think as long as they are getting orders at all they are accomplishing what they need to for now. They are a startup commercial jet company and unfortunately not just any average Joe off the street is ordering a commercial jet. I don’t see them taking a lot of market share for at least the next 5 years outside China, but it’s cool to see carriers within China support them!
Tibet is within China, not that surprising. Just an interesting media coup which they did with it.
With so few orders, the only one from a western manufacturer goes unreported ..🤔
Since I love New Zealand, I've searched for flights down under and found ANZ to be a highly priced airline. That being said, they are a wonderful airline! The service I had on the flights to and from San Francisco were among the best I've ever had... bar none! Perhaps they can lower their prices a little and get more business.
Unfortunately they're going up because of Auckland airport, increasing landing charge's
No wonder, the rest of nz dont like Aucklanders,
Awesome to see the A380 making an overwhelming return all over the world. It’s such a great plane that have proven all the A380 doomsayers wrong again and again. When one of these monsters are fully packed they are super profitable so it’s just about having them on the right routes.
Slot restrictions for the airports aren't going away anytime soon anyways.
In other words, even when B747 and A380 are finally gone one day, high passenger capacity planes will be needed.
Thus the real question is, how many engines will a successor really need. With current engines it would be three to achieve B747 or A380 passenger numbers, but in a decade?
Not for long... 2025 777x. It
Will do almost the same but ALOT cheaper.
Neither B777X nor A350-1000 are valid replacements in terms of passenger capacity.
And two planes are more expensive than just one rather inefficient plane.
@@Trancial-x-tion In a country like India there’s already MASSIVE capacity issues so if you can get 1.5 to 2 times the passengers per slot it would make sense. That said, I’m not sure why this turned out to some kind of ‘this plane back that plane’ - every plane has a unique combination of attributes that makes it suitable for specific routes and markets. The 777 and A380 is completely different planes with their own positives and negatives, and I would love to travel on both of them as much as possible.
It's a silly plane that few airlines want.
Now Korean Air is thinking about repeating what Egyptair is doing with their A220s
Not sure about their climate, but yes, the A220 is a better choice in cooler climates.
@Blank
Wasn't aware of that !!!😮
Happy to hear LH is bringing back its A380s into rotation. Sorry to hear about NZ - aside from high domestic prices and arrogant customer service, their really kooky Business class seats sure don't have the most desirable and valuable customers singing its praises. This too may explain that. Time for an actual C Class seat that competes against UA's, ANA's, SQ's and EK's. Go big or go home - to borrow from the NBA.
Royal Brunai just ordered four 787-9s at SIA (breaking news) Bosh!

These planes will be delivered when?
The 787 is the last good horse in Boeings stable. But even the -10 suffers from poor design choices.
Boeing must be worried given they appear to be doing their best to give airlines reason to consider the 919
Love the all white air NZ livery. 😍

Air New Zealand is struggling for two reasons only. We are all getting sick of their prices and I can’t be the only one that is completely over their complete inability to have a flight take off on time. If in fact the entire flight doesn’t just get cancelled outright. So over it.
With Comac, it's just a matter of time before they take on larger markets. They are now only in their infancy, but give them 5 years. They will gain valuable experience and expand into other Asian countries and possibly Africa too. Their products will become better and more advanced as they evolve. Their product has to be good, open to scrutiny as well, if they are serious about taking any market share away from Boeing or Airbus into the future. I hope they will do well.
It may well be that in the near future airlines in countries friendly to the United States and EU will buy from Boeing and Airbus, while airlines based in countries more aligned with China may purchase Comac aircraft.
Comac still have a far way to go in proving quality, functionality and build capacity. Furthermore most established airlines ain’t keen on spreading their fleet over too many types (or manufacturers). Comac could probably sell planes to some local airlines in Asia and Africa but is in no way a threat to Boeing and especially not Airbus. I don’t even think that Embraer are taking that much notice but they may also have different focus areas. Overall it would be great to break the airplane duopoly though, but it’s not something that’s done easy, cheap or fast.
An airline might take up two different suppliers, in order to be on the safe side if one gets grounded. But they seldom go for a third, if at all.
And Comac not only is less efficient than A, B and E. Unlike them they don't have any expertise in global support, do not know yet how to run a FAL efficiently and are reliant on the same suppliers anyways. In fact, the really difficult parts are made by their suppliers and not themselves.
Sure, they will grow into it, but that's still a long way to go.

Great Video And Info
Airbus is gonna have to bring the A380 back in production because airlines can’t seem to fully function without them
Unless Airbus is assured of orders for 500+ hulls, they won't bother. Airbus didn't break even on the first series and rebuilding the complete (and completely dismantled) production line will otherwise cost too much.
@@apveening great respond I 100% agree
@@greglogan8880 Thanks
The big question needs to be asked and Lufty is just one of the airlines who where caught with their pants down, why were they not ready for the huge uptake of travel once the pandemic was over?. Did they think people who had been starved of the chance to visit new countries , reunite with relatives and friends etc were just going to sit at home dreaming? Of course not, they leapt at the chance to travel!! As ever they listened to the so called “experts” who prophesied it would take at least a year for the travel market to go back to 2019 levels. The A380 has been a godsend to those airlines who operate it
A lot of the travelling was business induced and that still isn't at pre-pandemic level.
Mate. great content but could you "craft" your script.
Air NZ blaming low domestic demand? It may be a result of high pricing due to being in an oligopoly/monopoly
Air New Zealand are so expensive to fly with.
Hi have you hurd of the new Airline Global Airlines??? they will only be using A380s
I'm curious how their business model works out.
He’s mentioned it over the past few weeks. Mostly recently being yesterday or the day before. Global had their maiden “flight” and landed after a loop.
Where are they going to get enough A380s to get viable that way? Last time I checked, only Emirates really had enough A380s for that and they have about half the global supply of them.
COMAC C919. What about the MC21?
I’m headed to Auckland and the United round trip airfare is very good vs. Air New Zealand at 2X the price.
One of the problems I have with Air NZ (apart from them monopolising routes and screwing us with domestic flight prices) is the Star Alliance Network. If Im booking a flight on a superior airline (ie: Singapore Air, a Star Alliance member, along with Air NZ) back to NZ from overseas, I never know if Im going to be instead shunted onto an Air NZ "codeshare" flight. Its infuriating and it works well for the airlines for convenience and their cost-saving, while cramming passengers from multiple operator flights into one inferior-service flight
Air New Zealand is so expensive. An hour flight to Tauranga can go for 400 one way!!!
Air New Zealand needs to focus on their business class service to survive competition. The service has gone so bad. No service quality since they removed the FSM,s. Now anyone will be put into business class with now service training at all.

Air NZ is struggling nationally because their service is terrible, and their pricing is rediculous. They're paying the price for their own greed and incompetence.
Is he trying to sound like a robot?
It’s funny to hear that man pronouncing ‘twenty’ as if it were ‘twenny’.
The C919 isn't certified outside of China is it? Which pretty much ends that until it is certified. They might be able to sell a few here and there in Europe and the US but I doubt it'd ever be able to compete with Boeing or Airbus. Has far better odds of selling in Asia though.
Air nz has much better service than united.
That would not be hard

Based on the reputation of a lot of goods manufactured in China (which tend to be very poor quality), I'm kind of concerned that the C919 might not be very good quality compared to the Airbus A320neo and A220 families. Heck, I think I'd rather even fly on a Boeing 737 MAX family plane than a C919.
That's because the max has potential. Too much hate in videos across the media completely. Comic has no way to match airbus and Boeing in orders
@@nickolliver3021 It might become viable in a few years time, particularly if Boeing decide to fit a full complement of bolts.

The MAX has potential... for another dangerous accident, if not even another criminal conspiracy according to the court ruling.
But that's the only potential left in that roughly 70 years old design.
I really hope China and Russia get its airplanes in the market, it could be good for the customers and aerolines, I think right now the market for airplanes needs more competitors. It is a good start for China but yeah, it will take time for them to be able to take a piece of the market.
