2011 Canadian Grand Prix. Not as long as many other examples but there’s never been a more dramatic and exciting finish to an F1 race. Jenson Button winning the race after colliding with his team mate, getting a drive through penalty, being in last place at one point . Then charging through the field and overtaking Vettel on the last lap after Vettel made a mistake while under pressure from JB. All that after torrential rain had stopped the race for a number of hours . What a race
Earliest I've ever been. Would have been shocked if cricket wasn't on this list. Btw, just happened to see the video posting in my suggested feed, not in my subscribed notifications because I'm not getting it in my list at all! Not happy
_Aaaand_ we're back to not getting notifications. I haven't received a TopTenz notification since "10 Most Heavily Guarded World Leaders" was posted three days ago. This video showed up in my recommendations, but not my feed. I didn't get a RUclips app notification on my Android, either.
I was once listening to a game being played by the San Francisco Giants versus don't remember who while I was driving 70 miles to a graduation at the Guide Dog Center in San Raphael. After the graduation and a reception my sister and I got back into the car, to find that the game was still going on and was in the 21st inning. The game didn't end until we were almost home. This was in the mid 1980s.
For those who don't know baseball, AAA is the highest minor league level. These are the players who are either waiting to be called up to the majors, almost good enough for the major, demoted to work on something that wasn't quite right when they were in the majors, or major league players who are practicing to be ready to return after an injury.
AAA is *generally* veteran players and MLB players in a major funk; AA is for top young prospects to develop. Injury rehab for a major leaguer can go either way.
2:30 The fifty move rule has always existed. It should have been enforced. The rule is that 50 moves without a pawn move or any capture allows a claim of a draw. Note that a player has to claim. I have only enforced it once against a chess computer. Also worth noting is that in timey wimey chess in the 19th century there were no chess clocks and players could take unlimited time to move. There were apocryphal cases of a player writing a novel while waiting. Also in chess thete is correspondence chess that can go for years. There was even a game where there was one move a year by two university professors.
Why is there no mention of bicycle racing? We have the Grand Tours (over 100 hours of competition over 23 days) and the Race Across America (over 7 days of competition with no scheduled breaks; you can stop, but the clock keeps running).
Actually, the 50-move rule existed in chess before the game mentioned here. However, it had been modified, allowing 75 or even 100 moves in certain endgames that are known to be winnable, but can take more than 50 moves to win against a perfect defense. Following this game, these exceptions were scrapped. Since the endgames in question are rare, and hardly anyone knows how to play them perfectly anyway, the rule that a game is declared a tie after 50 moves without pawn moves or captures works fine in practice, and senseless marathons are avoided.
8:30 Before they introduced the shot clock basketball was possibly the most boring sport in existence. It was basically a game of keep away, hardly any dribbling or shooting, just teammates passing it back and forth trying to sit on a tiny lead.
Simon, you’ve left out six day races that have been run since the 1870s, many of which were run in recent years on running tracks. In 2005 Yiannis Kouros (Greek-Australian) set a six-day world best at Colac, Australia running 644 miles (1,036km) That’s an average of over four Marathons a day, so surely this should be No.1 ?
Wrong on the Cricket, before WW2 only in Australia were Test matches Timeless, the Durban match was a one off Timeless Test. Since WW2 all tests have been a maximum 5 days.
4:45 Man that is awful, people really just ignored brain damage back then. I mean boxers throw over 600 punches in a 10 rounder, landing roughly 30%. So even with them getting tired they each probably took a few *thousand* punches. Permanent damage is guaranteed at that point.
No, Susan, you're NOT the only one who thinks that. The most common definition of "sport" is an activity involving physical exertion. So poker...and chess...are certainly not sports.
@@timhutchinson3264 Actually, it's "physical activity that trains for war". So chess does qualify. Poker, on the other hand, does not. Neither does eSports. But fencing is sports.
@Rich Affinito What the faq are you talking about? Chess does nothing but prepare you for war. It's the physical aspect that chess lacks but it's all about moves and counter-moves. It's core principle is to simulate battle.
It's not much if that's the standard fare. Going double or even triple the standard game time is a lot more impressive than "this event just takes a long friggin' time."
@Rich Affinito You actually answered your own question. xD Most people consider it to be more sports than not-sports, so just because YOU don't think so, doesn't make you right. It's borderline, I'll give you that, but it is sports. Now grow up and do your homework. Addition: Chess has had known cases of doping and it is considered to be included in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games.
@Rich Affinito Where did you get that 75% from? The like and dislike ratio at the moment of writing is 790-15 which means 98% of viewers think chess is a sport. And I hate to tell you but most people actually do think chess is a sport because thay are not idiot. And I just scroll down the commets and saw basically no one questonin the validity of chess or poker as a sport. So maybe kids should just shut up when they're totally clueless. Okay pal?
@Rich Affinito What are you, like 5? Alertec, Modavigil, Provigil, Ritalin…? Never heard of these? They increase your mental capacity, allowing you to think more creatively and decrease your impulse to act rash. You would know this if you were a reasonable adult, but it's clear I'm talking to a kid or a pre-teen.
@Rich Affinito Of course they're sports, but 2dorfasis discounted Chess & Poker on the grounds that they're games, not sports. So with the application of logic, a game can't be a sport, so this is a paradox.

My favourite race, even if I did nearly deafen my mate when Jens got past Seb.
Y’all forgot 1990, Quidditch World Cup Final. Scotland v. Canada, 5 days of play.
Chesca Christine Who won that game?
Chesca Christine I believe Canada won. Lol.
The longest ice hockey game on main league of the country is from 2017 in the Norwegian league. 8 OTs, 11 periods, 217:14 game time, 8 1/2 hours
This was very interesting. Thanks again.
In 2010, a high school football game in Texas lasted 12 overtimes and about 5.5 hours, ending early the next morning.
We had a track meet that didn't really start til 1 a.m. due to weather that year

England v South Africa is the longest sporting event (other than sailing) EVER.
Ya, try sailing single handed, non-stop around the world. The record is 42d 16h 40m 35s.
Simon i just wanted to saybthank you for all the videos ive learned alot
Awesome video as usual. Just a small correction, Andy Bowen fought 4 more fights after that 110 round match

My favourite will always be, Björn Borg v John McEnroe in the 1980 Wimbledon Men's Singles Final....still remember it to this day!
Hey
6-4 3-6 6-7 7-6 70-68. That tennis score between Nicolas Mahut and John Isner beggers belief!
Would you believe that Isner had to endure another marathon game where the game stretched out for two days?
The scores on the match went so high that the IBM guys actually had to create a hotfix for the scoreboards to keep up with it.
I wonder if one of the Pawtucket players were named Pat and grew up to make beer....

I can't even watch cricket without falling asleep

If you ever meet Simon, ask him which football team he supports? He loves that and discussing astrology signs.
Dam man, how many channels do you have?
Honestly I thought you would mention the endless drawing match between Kasparov and karpov.
8:30 Before they introduced the shot clock basketball was possibly the most boring sport in existence.

Thank goodness for the shot clock and the backcourt violation

Portland Trailblazers VS Denver
anyone here seen “7 days in hell”?
What is that about? I just discovered this channel, is that a video on this channel?
Football:The American variety 😃😉
Mariela Que i love hearing someone with an english accent talk about american football
Wrong on the Cricket, before WW2 only in Australia were Test matches Timeless, the Durban match was a one off Timeless Test. Since WW2 all tests have been a maximum 5 days.
And isner would be in another marathon match at wimbledon last year for the 4th longest tennis match and 2nd longest at wimbledon

ultramarathons should be on the list, 72 hours at a poker table??
how about 72 hours of running on your feet
Yes exactly Antarctic, desert, and jungle, etc... ultmarathoners should be included.
Am I the only one that DOESN'T consider Poker a "sport"? And on that same level, Chess is considered a "sport", as well?!
Yeah you are the only one, same goes for darts, bowling, checkers and e-sports by the way.
No, Susan, you're NOT the only one who thinks that. The most common definition of "sport" is an activity involving physical exertion. So poker...and chess...are certainly not sports.

In cricket if after 5 days there is no result then it is a draw. It is not the highest scoring team.
And it is called the timeless test.
I need you to narrate my life.
As pretty as you are, I'll find him and make him narrate it.
Some of these games aren't even that long..
Are those books behind you real?
You think they are just props?
and again, not in subs.
Right?
#6 is boxing and #1 is boxing. I'm confused.
Boxing has been different throughout history so that's possible.
What about the World snooker championships? It's a best of 37 frames and can last 25+ hours over 3 days
It's not much if that's the standard fare. Going double or even triple the standard game time is a lot more impressive than "this event just takes a long friggin' time."
@@Kylora2112 fair points, but the title did say "longest" sporting events.
Hey how can I help you to translate your videos in "Hindi" "Punjabi". I can help !!!! ✌🏻🙏🏻🤜🏻🤛🏻
No
Yes, but big if true.
Really Simon chess I no u don't write this but come on man haha

You'd have a lot more views if subscribers did not have to play hide and go seek to find you.
Cricket is 5 hours
WhY kind of simpleton down voted Simon Whistler?????

@Rich Affinito I HAVE NO VIDIEOכ

Referee of the long boxing match (#6) was fighting a cold, I see what you did there...
He never made reference to the fact the newspaper said one of the fighters ended up in jail.(@4:57). WhY ?
Chess? Not a sport.
Poker? Also not a sport.
Chess, poker, cricket, hockey, baseball and tennis are all games.
