So many things to check. You know mine has done 140,000 kms. I have not done all of those checks. My bike only let ne down once, my fault, I had not riveted the rear chain enough. That was on a 1,200 mile ride one way. Have never checked tappet clearance until now, and I did that because I changed a cylinder head. All clearances were to spec, did not have to use shims. These engines are extremely strong, they need very little maintenance, as mine as had. Ride it hard it can take whatever you give it. The rear tyre is worn down to the fine little rib on the sides on the tyre. The better you keep your tire pressure up, the much better cornering you will get. I'm 78 been riding 61 years.
I'm confused about the reservoir cap thing. I'm brand new to screwing on anything with motors and maybe its because English isn't my first language. I don't understand why there's two places you can put in coolant. I thought the the coolant level indicator filled up by itself as you are filling it like it would when you're pouring in oil.
shouldn't the radiator be full to the top because coolong system is a closed dystem? It should pull coolant from the res. when cooling off.... why is the collant so low in your radiator?
Can someone tell me what that metal bracket sticking out at around 1:21-1:22 behind the fan? My sv650 slid out of me and bent that part on the left side.

I am not sure which part you mean, below the radiator I have a bracket which holds the lower fairings to the bike (removed to make the video), or do you mean the bracket which holds the fan guard to the the radiator itself? If you email me a picture of what you mean I will happily take a look for you.
There's a plastic/rubber nipple type piece on the fairing that pops into the bracket on the side of the rad. its on both sides. My bikes been dropped and i've JB welded the plastic bit back on.
Hi Tamsin. One thing I’ve noticed on my naked 99 model is that the fan NEVER comes on. Ive tested that it works by shorting the switch but I’ve read that these rarely get hot enough to need it. Any suggestions for checking further?
Hey Mark, I must admit, my fan comes on very rarely, and only when the whole engine and bike has become extremely hot. We have a motorbiking event called the Jennings Run down here, slow speeds through a town to celebrate a fallen rider, well after 20 mins of revving I managed to get it to come on (and my frame got uncomfortably hot!) but even after a 3 hour ride it does not normally come on! Your test will check it will work, which I assume it does, so I would not worry too much about it. I hope you like the other video too.
It may be that different models have a slight variation on the radiator. If I am looking at the same part of the c=screen you are, the tube just feeds in from where I pour the coolant in. I might be mistaken that we are looking at different things so let m know if this isn't what you meant!!!
Tamsen Cooper thanks for the response. I was talking about what I since found out was the reservoir overflow tube. The narrow tube from just under the rad cap to the reservoir tank. I think the rad I got, despite being marked as an 05 model, could have been an 03-04 model. It didn't even come with a rad cap, it was more like another fitting. I think some models had a tube so you could fill without removing fairings. Should be good now, I've a proper 05 model delkevic rad on the way. I was going to buy this bike the other day.. Out here in Los Angeles.. 22k miles on it, beautiful.. Same year.. Guy wanted $2300 US for it. So I go look at it.. He brings it out, starts it up, and it immediately coughs... So he has to rev it from shutting off it seemed like...So he revs it, warms it up.. Then he takes it up and down the block a few times, it sounds and moves AMAZING !!! He brings it back to the curb, parks...let's it idle.. Then that bike started acting WEIRD !!! It did not sound like a normal idle. Seemed like it twitched, or glitched. Like an irregular heartbeat.. High and low.. Once he shut it off, I looked around the bike again, still in GREAT shape, beautiful...but then I saw like neon blue / green caked on coolant on the bottom area of the bike, like a leak of some sort that hardened. I dunno, I really wanted the bike but those two issues made me walk away.........
hi there, i have a problem with my honda crf 250 L, fan is not starting automaticly. i checked; fan relay, all fuses, thermostat, engine coolant temperature sensor. they are working properly. and fan it self is working when directly connected to the battery. but fun is not starting anyway. is there anything i can do ?
Hey, the fan on my SV does not run continuously, but it 'kicks in' when the bike reaches a certain temperature. (and not always on every ride out if I have not been going fast) Have you tried running the bike for a while and just see if it kicks in as all the checks you described is the same as I would do!
Have you had any issues with any of the forks leaking. Had a fork seal done twice and still leaking. Don't really want to dish out for new forks as they look in good condition

I appreciate the video, and I love this bike but MY GOODNESS is this an annoying design! I hate that it requires so much effort and tricky just to check the coolant level.

It was about 1cm from the top, you are right, it could have had that extra little bit put in to just top it off.

Thank you, glad you have picked up an SV! I do not use special coolant, but do go for a reasonable brand.
Will the lack of coolant cause the bike frame to get hot?. This recently happened to me and I wonder what it could be.
@@ericgarcia7768 the frame will get hot regardless. The heat will travel from motor through frame a bit

One of mine leaks too, you have to be extremely careful putting a new seal on. You should not need to get new forks. Mine has done 140,000 kms

Isn't that an overflow tank to catch water as it expands due to heat. You don't need water in it
