Since the Burano announcement, I know I can continue my journey with my FX3 + FX6 and maybe someday I'll get the Burano to use on bigger projects and complete my set (right now I'm renting Red cameras or Arri's for those projects)
Fx6 all day. This is the most versatile camera i've seen. It ticks almost any box. Weddings? Check ✅ Interviews? Check ✅ Music Videos? Check ✅ Movie Production? Check ✅ Only thing that is a bummer is lack of Internal ProRes
Yea the fx6 is definitely a work Horse. I do wish ProRes was a little more standard, I know Sony have there own codecs but it’s such an easy codec to work with.
As someone who is familair with both cameras I agree on your point about the highlight rolloff of the Komodo. But I also agree with your point about the much larger file sizes that take up much more space. And the Reds require more to build out like you mentioned. In my book, the benefits of the incremental image quality don't outweigh the media management and cost factors
I think I’m finding with a lot of these tests that cameras today all look pretty freaking good in terms of image quality so often it’s going to come down to other factors like codecs or ergonomics or maybe even brand as to why you choose a camera
This is a great comparison! As a current FX6 user in the corporate, wedding, and higher ed world, I've always fancied the RED look but each of these cameras is just tool like Cam Mackey said! I still love my FX6 and haven't gotten to its full potential yet but in the future I would love to film on a RED sometime soon. Also I've just subscribed to your channel!
Thanks for the Sub. I agree about cameras just being a tool and I really enjoyed using the FX6 on this shoot. The flexibility of the fx6 makes it a really good choice for most people I think. I would love to own one to be honest I see a lot of really great stuff shot on the fx6

Honestly it's not as much about data. ELQ is probably about the same size as ALL-I, yet you'd see the same benefits. The Komodo uses highlight recovery software in camera to get around a stop more highlight retention compared the FX6. The Komodo also just grades nicer, better color straight out of camera. It is kind of like shooting with an ARRI in 10 bit 422, it still looks better than other cameras shooting RAW. I am not saying a Komodo is comparable to an Alexa but it definitely looks nicer SOC against an FX6. Now after proper coloring it can be pretty hard to tell any of these cameras apart for sure.
I’m in this exact same situation. I love shooting on my Komodo and Helium with PL lenses, but it’s not for every project. It’s a lot more work not having Sony or Canon style autofocus. I’ve been considering a C70 or possibly FX6. Glad I’m not alone lol
I’ve heard good things about the C70 but I’ve never used one. I would love an FX6 and I know I would definitely use it. All my lenses are EF mount so canon if probably the wise choice but I think I would side more towards Sony cameras
They are both great tools. My personal journey with RED has been spotty, at best. REDs seem to break down, crash and have weird problems much more often than Sony, Canon or BMD cameras. On three RED shoots, had firmware and software issues twice and RED Hollywood had to send out a replacement camera twice. And this wasn't a Komodo, these were the mid and high level REDs. If you talk to first ACs, many of them HATE working with REDs for these reasons and others. Boot ups and reboots take forever, black shading, at least on the models I've shot on seemed to take an insanely long time. The REDs make great images but they don't seem quite ready for prime time for me. I would never want to be a shooting a documentary hundreds of miles from civilization or in a foreign country with a RED, I don't trust their reliability at all. Whereas Sony, Canon or even BMD, my experience with them over a couple of decades have shown them to be pretty rock solid reliable. Kinefinity, I've never shot, but have heard some good feedback but I would exercise caution also as far as reliability and service/warranty options, depending on your country.
This is the thing about kinefinity and that’s not to say they aren’t reliable but I worry like you said about support. I always remember hearing the story of the RED one filming at a football game and when one of the teams scored everyone jumped up and down and that made all the RED cameras shut down. I think they’ve got better from what I’m finding so far. I’ve had a few blackmagic clips corrupt and when shooting pro-res but I’ve always been able to recover/repair them. The kinefinity has a long boot up but then so does the Komodo
I bought an MAVO LF mk1 and the motherboard fried up after just testing it in my kitchen! By chance, I have an official reseller that took back the camera and send me another one within a week. Then, I tested again the camera and it was working really good. It is, by far, the best looking image I ever got from a camera but....the motherboard fried up again so I asked for a complete refund. It's very sad, cause I really wanted that camera and the footage coming out of it is outstanding, but this is not a reliable camera. I initially bought it to shoot my first documentary but I think I'm gonna go with a Sony or BMD.
@ChuckRiseUp oh wow that sucks I’m really sorry to hear that. Nothing worse than a camera you can’t rely on. Here’s hoping the mark 2 is a little more reliable
@@thatcameranerd I found the Kinefinity really close to the ARRI look so I was SO happy with the image quality out of it. Also, you can shoot in multiple format, frame rate and codec. If I had the money, I would go for the Edge 8K (specially because it has internal ND) but once again, I would have to test the shit out of it before bringing it on a documentary in the middle of the jungle.
@@ChuckRiseUp I had a couple of issues with corrupt clips from a couple of different blackmagic cameras. I was able to repair those clips but it does knock your confidence. That could be why the FX6 has internal ND's we just didn't use them to try and make the test fair. But I think from what I hear its internal NDs are pretty good.
Taking into account all the accessories that the Komodo requires, it's unfair to make this comparison with the internal codec of the FX6 and not with ProRes HQ or ProRes RAW on an external recorder.
I think it’s fair to compare any cameras providing you disclose the advantages one camera has over the other.
