  • There are many ways to install hinges in our giant scale planes. There are multiple types of glue and multiple lubricants we can use to get the results that we are looking for. We don't believe there is one "right" way to do this so we will be presenting the top 3 candidates from each category (adhesive and lubricant) over the next few videos.
In this video, Jason installs the elevator hinges in our 91" Extreme Flight Yak 54 - EXP. For this surface, we will be using Titebond wood glue and 3-in-One oil. Be sure to watch all the way through to get our take on this and the other available adhesives.

Hello Jason and John. I like the idea using the wood glue as it cleans up easily unlike the epoxy lol. It must be strong enough as you guys use it in your larger aerobatic aircraft. Not questioning you guys just I’m surprised it would be good enough as there’s a huge amount pressure tugging on the hinges. Stay safe. Regards from Perth, Western Australia 🇦🇺

You know, we felt the same way but the proof is in the pudding. The Dalton has over 1500 flights on it and it has held up great with Titebond on all hinges. We think the fact that wood glue isn't as rigid and brittle really helps out in this application.
We agree with you on the cleanup. It really is the best option there is in that regard.

Is there a specific reason you use marvel mystery oil with titebond, and 2-stroke oil with epoxy or were you demonstrating the differences and it’s interchangeable?

I’m going to start hinging my Gilmore plane doing 30min epoxy but it’s very messy compared to this method, have you guys had good outcomes with this method?

I have had great luck using this method. My Dalton was hinged using Titebond and has over 1500 flights. The hinges have held up great!

I've heard good reviews of user Pacer/Zap Canopy Glue Formula '560'. It's my understanding its the same formula as the discontinued Zap Hinge Glue but without the coloring designed to match balsa. It's also my understanding that the canopy glue does expand slightly as it cures...
Not sure if any of that is true or not. Do y'all have any experience using the Zap Formula '560" glue for use in hinging control surfaces?

Hello Eric. We have not used Formula 560 Canopy Glue on hinges. It is amazing glue for canopies for sure and we may be willing to try it on hinges too. This being said, we do not believe they are the same glue.

@@FlightReviewz Hey guys, thanks for the fast reply! Yeah, I had never heard about it for that use either. I have used it for years for canopies because it dries clear and is flexible too. I saw a couple of postings where builders were advocating it as their preferred hinge glue and was curious to hear your thoughts on it as well. Here is a link to one of the postings I ran across...

The above link didn't seem to work. I've updated it here.
