- In this grasshopper Voronoi tutorial, I will talk about the populate geometry tool and how you can use it to produce a set of Voronoi cells on a freeform surface. First, we will make a rectangular boundary based on our freeform surface and then we will make the Voronoi cells.

thank you for the explanation and the tutorial! grasshopper feels so complicated to me since I've only just started and there are so many possibilities, but this helped me a lot :)
You guys are GODLY at this software, I have spent days trying to figure this out lmao, just what I need and more... I should make you my first port of call next time...
This was very Helpful.Thank you:)
That dimension component has saved my lifew
Great video, great work. Thanks.
🙏
Great work brother
Great Tutorial! Is there any possibility to chamfer the voronoi holes ? thanks
Very useful work! Thanks!
🙏
Great explanations!
🙏
omg you saved my project! thank you!
very good
Great tutorial!
👋🙏
Really helpful, thanks 🎉
thank you for this! is it possible to make the same shape without having an extruded border and just having the voronoi extend to the edges?
Perfect, the best tut on yt
Thanks
great video sir,
how can i fillet the edges of vornoi ?
Thank you!! lt’s been so helpful :)
Great :)
extremely clear
Best tutorial!! thank you!
Glad you liked it!
Good Job! Thanks.
Hey, sweet tut! Just wondering how I might generate the inverse of the geometry you made? I need to map the 'blob' shapes onto a polysurface? Thanks
Polysurfaces are tricky because you cant morph on them with Nurbs tools. The best way is to go with mesh and use dual graph on a nice clean triangular mesh
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
😻 So great!
😊🖐
terimakasih bang jago, thankyou master, we are from archiweek wanted to say thank you very much!! XDXD
You're welcome
Is it possible to create a vonoroi structure on a rounded surface/ ellipsoid?
Great video thank you
You're welcome Justin
Thanks for your video, but can i ask how to make this surface thickness.
gracias
Thank you , how can I make plane surface the same width as the start and end as the base object
It was really useful, but i have one query sir.even after baking my base surface is seen along with the voronoi .i have even hidden the preview of that. kindly help me with this.
Thank you. Your tutorials are very clear and helpful as always :) BTW How do you get the component names as a small speech bubble on top of your components? Thanks
Use the Bifocals Tool :)
4:00 Good use of Populate Geometry function
can anybody tell me how to convert loft brep to surface and use it for panelling
Great tutorials online! My only problem is that the extruded surface does not morph onto the original surface with thickness...just a flat surface. Any tips to solve that? Thanks!
Hello, can anyone tell me how to increase the thickness please ?
sir, after doing all these steps i got the pattern on the surface. But on rendering i could see both the plane surface and the pattern on the surface. i mean the surface hasnt got any perforations that of pattern. how could i get it done? also sir, the surafce i created was done by revolving the line(section of a frustum of cone)
Very helpful, thanks, i want to do this on a cylinder but the surface widget is getting no data when i use a standard tube primitive as the input, is that because the tube isn't classed as a surface and is there a way around that if so ?
Hi Gary thank you!
you can explode the tube and use outer surface
@@ParametricHouse Thanks very much, i wouldn't have thought to use that, i must read the manual!
Saved my little ass. Thanks a bunch :)
You're welcome
I have box instead of boundary .. and it dnt work like this cann u help me out brotha !!
thanks it is great tutorial but i am getting an issue while we connect scale to the curve the other one get disconnected can i get some help to solve it??
Hold Shift + drag from the Scale Geometry to add multiple connections to the Curve container.
Question: Curve added at 7:20 is not accepting two inputs (i.e. one input from earlier curve and second input from scale). What am I missing? Answer : Hold shift key while dragging join point from one node to another node to add multiple input to target node...But you should speak up this in your tutorial , you know. It helps newbeis.
thank u
Thank You !!
Thank You!!! I was searching this for two days😅
THIS HELPED ME SO MUCH THANK YOU
This was so helpful lol thank you
Hi, fantastic tute, when I morph to the surface (once I apply 1 value number slider to the UVW) my morphed surface has no extrusion depth; it's still only flat on the spiral.
Any ideas how to fix it?
🙏
Perhaps you have to increase the w to a higher number?
Did you ever solve this? I have this issue with mine
@@ParametricHouse just perfect...worked!
Please, help me🙏🏻 when I make surface, it don’t make surface, only grid. It’s like transparent. May be I have wring properties?
How do i make the cell boundaries organic rather than rigid? Cannot figure out where to place fillet in the script
Very useful ! thanks !! how can I make the voronoi Surface's edges softer (with grasshopper)? for they to look more organic ?
Try to fillet the edges using the fillet component
We also have a tutorial on fillet
I dont have Rhino 6 :(
the easiest way is just to use the smooth command with rhino after you bake it
Thanks man
You're welcome!
Thanx
great video! i have a question, can i define a free surface/hand drawn surface to create voronoi surface? does it have to be a rectangle? i want a hand drawn polygonal surface to have voronoi cells.
i did it on a soft edited surface and it worked¡¡¡
i'm a programmer searching for inspiration and explanation on voronoi meshes and my head just exploded!
👋
Me encanta
hello i have this problem wich one the surface will be narrow the distances berween voronies will be diffrenet i deal with 3d printed for jewerly and the machine will not see the line wich it less than 0.18 how can i solve this problem i have to achieve the constant thickness 0.3
nevermind i found it here thank you so much
thank you for the tutorial, it helped a lot. but I can't seem to have the extruded version of voronoi in my curved surface, what could be the reason?
Hi, thank you! You can use Mesh Offset (Pufferfish) or Mesh thicken (WeaverBird)
Hello can you apply fillets to the scaled geometry ?
You have to make the fillet before the surface morph command
Use the fillet component in Rhino 6 or simply make 3 layers of voronoi cells. The first and the last one are the same size but the middle is slightly scaled. then loft them together
thanks i did easily
I cant place 2 inputs into one curve. Around minute 7:24, you connect boundary curve and scale outputs into one curve operation, which you then flatten. The problem I have is connecting two outputs into the curve input. Can you help?
Yeah sure! Just hold down the shift key when you are connecting multiple outputs to an input
@@ParametricHouse thank you so much sir. i had same problem and was searching for solution for sooo long..
haha I got stuck at the same point! Then I searched google... but I guess I should have checked the comments.
Same here, thanks for the tip
hi, I have a problem. would you please help me? when I attach Voronoi to my shell, the thick of my shell doesn't change and has a fixed size.
You can change the thickness with the w domain of the target box.
Is there any way to make the extrusion go into the opposite direction? Any help would be great
You should use a negative number for "W Domain" input of "Surface Morph"
Great tutorial! What if my surface is more organic curve, instead of a rectangle?! Thanks!
That will go into the mesh modeling field and you have to use the Weaverbird's dual graph!
@@ParametricHouse how do i use that? Where do I connect and with what? (this is really hard I can't figure it out please help me)
I'm trying to get this to work with just the inside of the cells rather than the space between them. I manage to get the extrusion morphed onto the surface, but the extrusions aren't solids only the side faces have surfaces. The cap command doesn't work to fix this because the top and bottom are curved and not planar. Any solution to this?
You want to add the boundary curve to the curve set that is flattened towards the end by hitting shift and connecting it to the same input node. as the geometry from the scale component.
Am not able to combine the boundary curve and geometric curves
Hey man, i loved your video, this helped me a lot, but my extrusion came out too wide, who i can fix it out??
Thanks , try decreasing the w component (relative to your model size)
@@ParametricHouse solved!! thnks man!
I can apply the voronoi to a surface but not a trimmed surface, how is it possible to do that?
Hey, did you find out?
I have the same prop
How do you make the icons display their names?
By using the Bifocals plugin
How do you combine the curve with the scale? because I am using Rhino 7 and it keeps cancelling out the first curve
Hold Shift + drag from the Scale Geometry to add multiple connections to the Curve container.
Podrías enseñar como hacerlo en un volumen?? Ya sea en un cubo o una esfera. Gracias

At 7:17 I can t combine two lines on a curve? When I try other lines one of them is missing, I lost another line. How can I fix this? Please help me to figure it out. Thank you
if you hold shift click and drag you should see a plus icon pop up and it should work. I had the same issue
I have an error message when I tried to bake it, it says, "we're sorry but baking is only possible when no other commands are running". I don't know what to do.
make sure that your rhino command interface has no command running on it and then bake , it will work .
7.34 i can t combine with curve and scale to curve icon. do you have any idea
Sorry i don't get it, what do u mean ?
@@ParametricHouse i cant connect curve and scale to curve. you are doing between 7:00 and 7:40 but i cant. my curve icon dosent accept 2 connection
@@oguzhanklc8456 Conect the curves and press shift when you are connecting the curve with scale, and next continue with the tutorial.
How does your voronoi pattern with edges "click" onto your shape while mine continues to look like a rectangle OVER my shape boundaries? It's very frustrating! I've tried so many solutions that just break the code.
everything worked fine until I did the last step which was bake at 10:45, when I did it nothing changed it didn't even load or take time as if I did nothing so any idea why?
Could anybody share the idea of Count and Seed in Populate Geometry tab. Arent they the same or....
Count is the amount of points, seed just is a value for randomize the population. you could see it as different versions of the positioning.
@@Gorn171 Thank you :D
im trying to wrap my head around grasshopper but all the tutorials start easy and then I loose track.....Im so confused with all the commands ...where do I start?
why does it tell me "zero referenced surface" ? my voronoi effect doesn't apply on the surface. I did it all as you did. I played this video like 5 times to follow. Help!!!
Hi, when I extrude, I got the cells extruded instead of the outer surface, I don't know why. I followed exactly what you did. Could you help me to understand please ?? Thanks
When I connect th second curve to the scale output, it automatically disconnect it from the first curve (surface) I don't know how you can keep it both connected with scale. I flattent it, and when i extrude it,s the cells that are extruded
HAHA it's okay I just pressed shift, I'm a very new beginner !!!!
why isnt my surface morph baking?
And how to add a polysurface ?
Extrusion is not working in the morph surface
7:17 it doesn’t let me combine in 1 curve
Important question, how can i make the voronoy morph into the surface, but at the other side of the surface?
I explain myself:
A u see the "base" of the voronoi on the spiral is the outern face of the spiral surface, what i want to know is how to make the voronoi base be on the other side of the spiral surface, the inner face?
Simple try flipping the target surface ;)
