- Filmed on Saturday, May 27 2023, I drive around the small town Manitowoc, WI to see what's happening.
Manitowoc is a city in and the county seat of Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. The city is located on Lake Michigan at the mouth of the Manitowoc River.
Manitowoc derived its name from either the Ojibwe word manidoowaak, meaning spirit-spawn(s), or manidoowaak, meaning spirit-wood(s), or manidoowak, meaning spirit-land(s). In the Menominee language, it is called Manetōwak, which means "place of the spirits".
The first Europeans in the area were French fur traders who arrived in 1673. The Northwest Fur Company established a trading post in 1795.
In 1835, before the transfer of land from the Menominee Nation to the United States, President Andrew Jackson authorized land sales for the region, drawing the interest of land speculators. William Jones and Louis Fizette were the two first recorded buyers on August 3, 1835. Benjamin Jones, business partner and brother of William, is considered the founder of Manitowoc.
Manitowoc had early involvement in the shipbuilding industry, and during WW2 produced landing craft, tankers, and submarines.
On September 5, 1962, a 20-pound piece of the seven-ton Sputnik 4 crashed on North 8th Street in Manitowoc. A cast was made from the original piece before the Soviets claimed it, and the cast was displayed at the Rahr West Art Museum. A customer in a nearby art gallery jokingly suggested that the city should hold a festival to celebrate the crash. The city held the first Sputnikfest in 2008.
Burger Boat Company, a yacht builder is located in Manitowoc and produces approximately 2-3 yachts each year.
Manitowoc is home to the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, and is one endpoint of the ferry route of the SS Badger, which crosses Lake Michigan and connects Manitowoc to Ludington, Michigan.
Phil Coulson of the Marvel Cinematic Universe stated he was born in Manitowoc in the second season of the television show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
As of the census of 2020, the population was 34,626.
The racial makeup of the city was 82.9% White, 5.0% Asian, 2.4% Black or African American, 0.7% Native American, 2.6% from other races, and 6.4% from two or more races. The population was 7.2% Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The median income for a household in the city was $61,454, and the per capita income for the city was $33,257.
About 5.0% of families and 10.7% of the population were below the poverty line. #driving #travel #drivingtour
Loved seeing the town that i immigrated to as a child, back in 1957. By slowing down the video i could see many recognizable buildings, and some interesting transformations. Thanks for this ride back in time for me! Ill check out your other videos to see if you investigated Escanaba or Marquette Michigan. Lived there too, and great small towns in beautiful settings.
Would like to get to Marquette some day but it's a hell of a drive...

This is WI better known simply as Beer. Why is beer important because they dont have sh*t to do but wait around for Sunday Packer games. LOL Hey, I hung out there, its cool and the girls are pretty and they know when its their turn to roll the dice.
Any given night.....ANY!!! NIGHT of the week, you can run into a party at one of the many bars in Manitowoc. The minute you spot that one dude you know, youre in! Put all that beer and football aside, these people lol.... in these cities along the lake Michigan shoreline, are some pretty solid blue collar people, folks. And in general, I admire their level of knowledge and intelligence, proactively! Ive seen and heard WI girls bury dudes on info and stats on football! Yeah, I miss that small city and Green Bay! So much fun, I miss it!

Well for the first 10 minutes you drove around in circles and covered both main streets of downtown 😂 after that you headed to the town of Newton. I lived in Manitowoc for 3 years in the mid 70’s and worked for Mirro Aluminum Co which is now out of business along with a number of other companies that are either gone or just a shell of a company. Manitowoc Crane, Ice and Shipbuilding they use to be the largest employers in town. There are some beautiful older homes but without good paying jobs their values have dropped significantly. I was in freight sales for years and once a town loses its major business they dry up. Corp greed they move down south for cheap labor or over seas for even cheaper labor. 😢
