    This Rockpalast was recorded on 1st December 1976 in the Sporthalle Cologne and shows the inventors of the legendary “dual lead-guitar/twin guitar sound” with the classical line-up of the band from Andy Powell (guit., voc.), Martin Turner (bass, voc.), Steve Upton (dr.) and Laurie Wisefield (guit.) in captivating form and mood. In 1976 Wishbone Ash were at the zenith of their career. Their albums, from “Pilgrimage” to “New England”, reached worldwide top positions in the album charts, were refined with silver and gold, the band was constantly on tour around the globe and tracks like “The King Will Come”, “Warrior” or “Blowing Free” achieved cult status among fans of guitar-oriented progressive rock and are milestones in rock history. Characteristic of Wishbone Ash is their melodic, guitar-oriented rock, which is dominated by two electric guitars played in duet. In addition there is an almost ballad-like vocal style. This Rockpalast edition is a must for every Wishbone Ash fan!

      There are two versions of the band these days. Andy Powell’s Wishbone Ash and Martin Turner’s Wishbone Ash. Martin’s version has the trademark good vocals and great bass guitar.

      I have observed that musical genres tend to go through phases, 1.) raw and primitive stage, 2.) teenybopper stage, 3.) artful and insightful stage, 4.) legacy stage, 5.) blatantly commercial stage, 6.) decline. In 1976 Wishbone Ash were definitely in that artful and insightful stream of rock music.

    Wishbone Ash eine meiner allerliebsten Rockbands die ich je kannte! Diese Jungs habe ich schon 4 mal in den 70er und 80er Jahren gesehen. Wahnsinnig gute Musik!
    Das war immer ein unglaublicher Genuß vom allerfeinsten mit großartigen Musikern wie Martin Turner, Andy Powell, Steve Upton und Laurie Wisefield. Und 2 mal war auch der Bruder Ted Turner als Gittarist dabei.

      kann ich nur bestätigen, die Band gehört auch zu meinen absoluten Favoriten. Wenn Andy Powell das Video sieht, speziell seine Gibson Korina Flying V (bei Blowin Free) , die er Rudolf Schenker für ein Butterbrot verkauft hatte und heute zahlen Sammler über eine Million Euro für das Modell. Die ander Flying V hatte er gegen eine Lederjacke von Schenker getauscht. Selbst diese 67er Gibson kostet heute locker 50.000 Euro. Ich durfte einmal Martin Turner kennen lernen und er war sensationell nett, Andy Powell hingegen war leider das genaue Gegenteil.

    I would have been 15 during this concert, where in the heck was I, how did such a cool band pass me by? I was into Prog Rock bands like ELP & Yes, oh well, better late than never, as they say. What fantastic musicians! Their song “Blowin’ Free” feels so magical & mystical like it was written about lil’ ole me;
    “Her hair was golden brown,
    She was far away, I found it hard to reach her, She told me “you can try”
    But it’s impossible to find her”;

    What a great concert. The one band/ half band which I saw as early as 1973 at PinkPop in Geleen and recently in 2019 in Afrika and sometimes in between.
    All the time they were just tight and wonderful. And, while learning to play Snooker in Germany's Kneipen, there was ever so often Phoenix blaring from the speakers. Lovely stuff.

    1971, I was blowing free in England. Wishbone Ash on BBC Old Grey Whistle Test opened up with a drum roll, a thundering bass & a killer hook intro. The song was 'Vas Dis' then transitioned into 'Jailbait'. A spellbinding set from virtual unknowns that still wows today. At 17 I decided that night I was a guitar player. That was 52 years ago, now 69 I'm still playing perhaps not as blowing free as I was then but I really wouldn't have any other way. 'Time was' indeed, thank you Wishbone Ash !

    Thank you for posting this recently released rarity. I think that WA's kind of music went over most American's heads. Maybe a bit to intricate, plus no "macho" lead singer out front strutting around. Following them for 50 years now, since Argus. Plus I've been playing guitar since 71. Major influence for me. Bless em all.

    Debería haber cómo en el deporte un premio a la regularidad y éstos se lo llevarían de largo: la de rodajas que han editado,la de años que llevan sin ser grupo de arena,lo increíble que suenen hoy día aún con las bajas del núcleo original y por supuesto ese distintivo que es doblar las guitarras.Levan desde 1970 pero si los ves en 2024 te hacen saber que el R N R tiene para largo.Son excepcionales.

      Actually, it's Wisefield. But the Hamer bass ... I think you're right about that. However, I remember having found an interview with Martin in which he explains why he didn't use the Hamer much (basically because he couldn't get used to the way the controls were wired). So this must be one of rather few gigs in which this instrument can be seen.

    Heard their album "New England" back in 1976 on 102.7 WNEW-FM in NYC, played by the inimitable Allison Steel a.k.a The NightBird. Best album.

    I didn’t listen to them much. We had a band in the early 70’s. We played the pilgrim and blind eye. I thought they were great.

      Sadly they plays as two different bands now. Andy Powell has the name Wishbone Ash and Martin Turner has his own band playing WA stuff. Both bands still playing. 👍

      @@john8451 I never got to see the Martin Turner outfit. But I can say that the Andy Powell crew is still quite busy touring. I have been to their gigs a couple of times in the last few years, and each one of those was really enjoyable. Very well-crafted no-frills concerts with quite good musicians. Right now they are on tour across Europe. If you get the chance to see them, don't miss it; it's quite worth it.
